Case Design for Liquid Cooling

Thought I should provide a specification list.....


Case Specifications


100% aluminium construction, designed specifically for water-cooled systems. The case is divided into three sections for installation of two large radiators in the top and bottom with unrestricted air flow. Radiator brackets are provided for installing any 120mm radiator with any fan spacing. Any width radiator up to 70mm can be fitted, with space for 38mm width fans with 38mm shrouds in a push-pull configuration. Holes between the sections are provided for cable and tubing access. The case can be customised in many ways to suit individual requirements.


Dimensions – Height 625mm, Width 230mm, Depth 700mm


Motherboard Tray – ATX, eATX compatible with eight PCI slots. Cut outs for processor back-plate access and easy cable management. Can be fitted in the standard motherboard orientation or inverted motherboard orientation.


5.25” Drive Bays – Up to 5 external bays. 3 full length drive bays and two that can be full length or short (can be used for fan controllers, displays, etc.), depending on radiator requirements.


HDD Drive Racks – Up to 10 HDD’s can be installed and can be mounted transverse or longitudinal, depending on radiator and water-cooling system requirements. A converter rack can be provided for the installation of up to 8 2.5” SSD’s.


PSU – The PSU can be mounted in the top or bottom of the case and can be fitted either way up. A long PSU can be fitted in the bottom section, but you may be restricted to a short PSU in the top, depending on radiator requirements.


Cooling – The motherboard section is ventilated with a 200mm fan at the front of the case and a 140mm fan at the rear.


Side panels – The option of a windowed side panel is available and can be mounted on either side of the case depending on motherboard orientation.


Ports – USB, eSATA, Microphone, Headphone are mounted in a 5.25” modular unit that can be removed or mounted in any of the 5.25” bays. It can also be mounted at the bottom of the case where a 5.25” bay is provided specifically for the port module.

A side note, will long PSUs like the PC Power and Cooling 1000w+ units fit in those spaces? I just figured I would ask as I am sure people interested in this case also plan to have a personal nuclear reactor to power it. So far it is looking really great and the design is really coming along.

Looks amazing. Good luck with getting it produced. Like i have said before, the biggest expense will be the outer shell of the case. everything else is pretty straight foward.

Wow I could actually feel my eyes strain when I looked at that red. I agree... matte would look better.

Would all the expansion slots of a Rampage II extreme or Evga Classified be usable with 8 expansion slots on the case? Maybe 9 or 10 expansion slots? :confused: I would definitely be interested in one if this would be possible....:confused:

The case looks incredible, to bad the market for such a special case is so small. However if available it would probably be on a lot of water coolers wish list. I would not be surprised if we eventually get something similar from some of the larger case manufacturers, unfortunately a bit more main stream though.

Maybe cable management system missing like the one they have done so all cables can be hidden. Have not noticed if you already done that.
Also definitely black matte to start of with.
You dont want to be wasting resources and man power on the colours of the cases at this early stage.

Yea this case is for modders anyways if they want it a different color they can do it on there end. lol

When I built my first computer back in 2000 I used a big PC Power and Cooling full tower case. It was bumpy beige like most cases back then except it was solid steel. As a result I took it to an auto shop and had them strip the paint and smooth it out and give it silver automotive paint. This is why my computers are called silver bullets they all are revisions of that first computer. My current one I am fixing the SBII is the first to use a different case in 9 years. (Yea I get my dam use out of my investments lol)

What I love about this case design is that it is defently one that can be used for years on many different computers. I think I see the future case for the SBIII 10 years from now.... rofl

Nah, far from similar, the corsair is more a Lian Li design with Coolermaster rad mount.

Main difference is the Corsair does not give the rad fresh air, due to that I would not consider it any sort of competition for Mick64s Case, more for Coolermaster.

Had another go at white. Not an easy colour to render!

As this design has a niche market, it may be built to order. If that's the case (pun), colour preference may be an option....

IMHO that would be starting to get realistic. Around the Tyr PC-X2000 I'd say it's the price point where the design and the prospective manufacturer might be talking the same language...

I'm pretty happy with the design as it is now. Don't think I'll be making any more changes, unless it's to improve or simplify the manufacturing process.

Thought you guys might like to see it in different colours. Still got a few more up my sleeve if you're interested? :shrug:

I think the next step is, you need to pull it all apart and design each part, and how they will fit together.

At this rate why not one with paint that changes colors this way everyone is happy. You know those pains that change based off of temp....

You could probably fit two in the top and two in the bottom in a 'rad sandwich' if you wanted to, but I designed it for one in the top and one in the bottom with fans plus shrouds in push-pull for maximum air flow...

That is exactly what I want and is about the only good water case design I have seen without modding, especially to cool these hot D0 i7s. Cool air intake on one side and expel hot to other:up:, which can prevent local intake ambients from raising which occurs with my current expelling hot air out bottom of my case. Quad rad up top in dedicated cpu loop is minimum to cool D0 i7 at 4.5ghz, as above 4.2ghz mine adds about 6-8C to load temps for every 100mhz (loads at 70C at 4.2, 95C at 4.5). First cpu I have owned which is temp limited, so a few C off intake ambients from better air flow design, couple from quad rad vs triple, better block...temp decreases add up, and I can quit dumping all rad heat over my hard drives. Not to mention having cpu cooled from above near cpu socket, and vid cards from below make for neat shorter tubing.

My only other choices are cases much larger than this with wasted space...but this is a very efficient design:clap::clap::clap: I was actually considering buying a lian li or tj7 and mounting an external rad to top....which would be ugly/dusty compared to this.

If you can get someone to make it...I will put my order in that day...unless its 6 months later...me of little patience.:D

I really like the one in black! Brushed aluminum would be awesome. I'm going with a similar design myself now. One 480 rad in the top and another in the bot. And I will have the psu standing and sucking fresh air from the side. And I will also have a door on my chassis. I hope that I will be able to start building soon. Im waiting for the last bits and pieces to get in. They should be here any day!

Some questions: How thick panels are you going to have? 1,5mm aluminum? And how big of a gap do you need on the back of the motherboard? For cable routing and such.

What type of big fan are you planing on using in the front? I have been looking on this one. The Antec 200 x 30 mm Big Boy 200 Tricool Fan.

Has anyone tried it? Some of these big fans is just crap.

I have a couple of those, depending on how you use them I guess they could be ok. They push a good amount of air at high speed something the accompanying wind noise proves. They are quite sweet on the low setting but dependent on your ambient noise levels you may notice their Achilles heal, pwm noise. On the medium setting I find this pwm noise very annoying. Ignoring the built in speed control and running them from my t-balancer once again pwm noise dominates. I've not tried them under analogue control.

Thanks! I'm debating with myself If I really need a 200mm in the front or if a 120 will be just fine. I will have about the same layout as mick :) In that case a 120 at the back and one 120 in the front.

You don't have any other good suggestion for fans in the "big" league :p:D

Not readily available at the moment, but the MegaFlow 200 case fan form CoolerMaster is one of the best 200mm fans you can get. They come in black, clear, blue LED and red LED and there are 700rpm and 900rmp versions...

This case would be perfect for my new i7 build. I'm planning on having two WC loops and I'm looking for a case exactly like this one. If you can get this into production reasonably soon, I'll buy one for sure.

The fans are available now, but I've only found a couple of suppliers that have them in the US and OZ.

Not sure how thick the panels would need to be. It will depend on strength required, size, etc. I would have thought that 1.5mm would be too thin. I would estimate 3mm, 2mm at least!

I would estimate that a gap of 15 to 20mm would be required for cable routing behind the motherboard tray, but that's just my opinion.

1.5mm is what Lian-li uses and the side panel of the v series cases is 2mm and it seems ridiculously thick to construct a case out of.

Just measured the side panel on my ATCS 840 here and it is made of 1mm alu ;)

That surprises me! 1mm seems very flexible. I'm no expert, but because of the size of my design, I still think at least 2mm would be needed. Of course a sheet metal fabricator would have a better idea than me, and the final test would be to build a prototype.

It's rolled and crimped on the 1mm, but seriously, you dont want the case to be overbuilt - its just a waste and increases cost. an all 2mm alu case would be very heavy by case standards, especially in such a large case size

Of course, if 1mm or 1.5mm is adequate, then that gauge would be used. Like I said, I'm no expert. I would leave that sort of decision to the fabricators....

You need to measure the thickness of the tj07 as like this case, all the strength comes from the outer case. the ATCS 840 for example has reinforcement at each corner and is about half the size. Not a good example. I would say 2mm aluminium from the main body, 1.5mm for the shelves and side panels (given their size!)

Manufacturing processes like rolling, crimping will only add more expense compared to using thicker aluminium for prototyping / small batch production.

well jeeze, the TJ-07 has a damn thick shell.... no wonder its so damn expensive - you would need a highly custom ultra heay duty roller just to do that shell right.

the side panels of the tj are 1.3mm alu and the inside construction is 2mm. Unless you want this case to be $600-700 I suggest you DONT build it like a TJ-07

+1, just measured the curved body section on the top of mine: ~9.4mm :eek:

My Lian Li V2110 has 2mm thick and that was a :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: cutting through with my dremmel and its plenty thick to keep it stable. So I would say 2mm thick the most!

Yea, 2mm alu is the most you would need. I think 1.5 should be enough, but you might need 2. 1mm is way too thin, methinks, for a case of this size.

not sure you guys realise the price of aluminium... you can get 2000mm 2000mm 2mm sheets for £50....... its not THAT expensive. This case was always going to be in the £250-£350 region, its a larger tj07, thinking this was ever going to be a cheap case is just silly!

nothing too complicated i'm just trying to wrap my brain around the dimensions of all the compartments.

I'm thinking 2mm on my chassis I'm building. Thicker side panels gives more structure to the case and also creates less vibrations and shuts in sound much better.

Very nice work, I like the design and the posibilities the design offers.

I would like to have a 120.3 and 120.4 configuration & a long PCU. example 200mm(L)x160mm(W)x86mm(H) is for a W0133 or 220mm(L) for example

2mm is nice, but as mech said its a total pain in the ass to cut! Cutting one of my v series side panels I killed 2 $20 rotozip bits :\ you need a coolant feed to properly work with it.

If you are building a case from scratch, you would be foolish not to get the panels laser/water jet cut, unless you already have the necessary equipment, especially if you can provide drawings in a .dwf or .dxf format which can be fed directly into a laser/waterjet cutter. If you don't mind waiting you can get it even cheaper - i got a rad cut out and a custom made motherboard backplate cut from 1.5mm ally for £12

Had another go at rendering with some components installed. Not entirely happy with the result, but there isn't a vast number of SketchUp components available. Might have to create some more of my own.

Nice CAD work. The design is very similar to mine, except the compartments have been rearranged. Although this case is for water cooling, It looks like there is very little ventilation for the mobo compartment. I would be concerned that heat build up may be a problem, unless you intend to have fans on the side panels.....

A faceplate to cover the PSU and hide the cables would be nice, imo. :)

I'm concerned is the use of 80mm fans w shrouds vrs 120s. that's 14 80mm fans... quite a bit of noise vrs the same number of 120s.

Surely if 120.4 and 120.3 rads fit, 120mm fans could with only a minor nudge?

I'd also love to see a bit more thought given to the front. Either vent the whole thing a la a Lian-Li, or do something like they did on my Omen, with a front, detachable facade about 3/4" forward of the front, flat and smooth, the front fan sucking around it, basically... but the single 200mm grille feels a bit odd there among the smooth flat curve of that case. [nvm, see below]

I'm also in the "use 140mm in the rear" camp.

I like the airflow over the HDDs, and the removal of all water cooled heat to the 2 chambers.

The Omen I have scavenges cool air from beneath the case for the PSU, which helps I imagine. You may want to consider the option of removing that hole on the interior chamber and flipping the PSU back to scavenge from beneath. One VERY BIG reason for that is the airflow over the RAM and top rear of the MB. MBs are designed for a crossflow frm bottom front to top rear, depressurizing the bottom rear with the PSU may not result in an advantageous setting for the MB's needs. The render with the PSU up top solves all this, of course.

Wondering if the window could be a bit longer, reveal more of the internals? Hard to tell if it would show off all the way to the drive bays, for those who might do something different up there. Perhaps as an optional side, with an "extended window". If I was using Solid-State drives, I'd be all about showing them off.

EDIT: just caught the renders with the square grille on the 200mm. That is beautiful.

Another suggestion that popped into my head: is the case long/thick enough to have an option to place 140mm rads pulling from the bottom and pushing out the top? I know, dumping the bottom rad heat back into the ambient is an ugly thought, but it just seems to me with all the new configs out there (Classified w it's 4 16x slots, for example), 140mm rads may become a necessity, better to plan now.

EDIT2: would you consider stretching the MB chamber a smidge to allow for one extra PCI slot panel in the rear? I ask simply because of an observation regarding the eVGA Classified MB: They placed a 4th PCIe x16 slot at the bottom of the MB. If this behaves in the same manner as my MB, that last one would be used for the PhysX dedicated GPU in a Tri-SLi/Multi-card-PhysX setup, with 3 GPUs matched for SLi, and a 4th not-necessarily matching GPU for PhysX (in fact, they specifically mention the MB has been rigged for this). In that arrangement, the last card wont get a full workout, and could go with a GPU-only block, with the surrounding RAM and components passively cooled with heatsink(s). This would neccesitate enough clearance for a 2-PCI height card in the last PCI slot, and makes most cases impossible to work with unless you go full coverage - unneccissary in this example.

If you added that much clearance off the bottom of the MB, and included that extra PCI plate in the rear, it would make this case one of the few (if not the only) to accommodate that 4th card being a double-wide.

I'd even suggest you go far enough to mount a 295 in the bottom with enough room for an elbow fittingfor the return, so 1 extra PCI plate + some room for a barb/elbow?

Not sure what you're talking about with the fan situation. The fans are 120mm diameter and 38mm thick, with 38mm thick shrouds. Most, if not all, of the other items you have mentioned have been rectified or have been discussed and reasoned before including an eighth PCI slot to accommodate the eVGA classified motherboard. :shrug:

If you are referring to my design (which I hope you are after my previous post), the motherboard tray does have holes positioned for a standard ATX motherboard. Holes are not required for a full eATX, as the MB will reach the edge of the tray. The problem with the Rampage board is that it is bigger than ATX but not full eATX, but it's big enough to cover the holes. Take a look at some of my other renders.....
