Thank you again for this bios. I use powercolor 3850 256mb. I will try it with your bios.

@Norway what's the value (KΩ) on the mem Vr you used ?
can you gime me the magic trick for riva ati tool is not working for me it crashes all the time :(
Edit I found how to increase the slider :) now the question for the Vr is still remaining :p
gigolo no problem  good luck :)
anyone got a HD3850 pic of the volt mod and pencil mod locations... seems to be a bit confusing with HD3870 mixed in this thread
here's photo of my HIS HD3850 IceQ 3 card backside http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=171909
thanks
@eva2000 try to measure point 1 and ground and see if it has 0 resistance then measure point 2 and 3 and see if the have 0 resistance iφ so the it should be the smd resistor between point 1--2 but you should wait for some one to tell you where the pencil point is for sure or try to lower this resistor 10-20 Ωhm and see if it raise your Vmem
Mine Sapphire 3870 can do 1331mhz on mem without vmod and stock voltage is 1.911v but when i do the vmod and set it to like 2.20v i cant go higher wy? how high voltage do you need for them mem on the 3870?
2,3Volt for every day should be fine but not more....
i don't know why you can't go higher but i thing that the memory frequency on those cards is already maxed out but i haven't try the mod yet so i can't really tel you why :(
When i set it to 2.31volt the thing articfats alot and crashes instant?
Vatos locos:
You talk about GDDR3 me and Riska talk about GDDR4 and 2.3v is ALOT (!!!) for GDDR4 .....
I wouldn't go any higher then 2.1v for everyday use under good cooling ....
I didn't do any thing special to hit 1400Mhz and that was on 1.95v, take of the mem HS and take a pic of one mem modul or just write down what is writen on it, also interesting to know what brand your card is Riska, mine is
Sapphire
Edit: i have done the OCP mod on both of my cards and they still lives ;)
The resistors to replace is very small, i used size 0805 and they was a little to big so 0605 should fit just fine ;)
Ok thanks norway i couldent understand wy it should be that high...
oh my bad i read 3850 :( sorry :( the yhea 2.0Volt are fine for 24/7 more for benchmarks only
is your card a 3870 with GDR4 memory or a 3850?
what voltage do u suggest for my 3850 512MB with Samsung 1.0ns ram
i've a vmod vor the GPU with 1.41Volt and can get GPU clock of 864Mhz
my ram is currently not vmodded and runs at 1035Mhz
my cooling is an accelero S1 with two 92x92 fans @ 12volt but without ram heatsinks because the ac heatsinks are crap
is it enough cooling when the fans blow direct onto the GDR?
You can pump up the volt, but wouldn't recommend you to nor run them without cooling 24/7 with more voltage.
On my 8800GTX (1ns memory) I used 2.24v to get 1215Mhz on the ram but I used swiftech ram sinks
I don't recommend swiftech becuase they always fall off :(
Here is a good closeup of the vmem chip area.
Is this what you wanted? here is one of my modded cards, with v-core read point and a removable jumper for when I'm not benching.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1...tmod026pi4.jpg[/IMG]
@ jimmyz / norway ; what's the resistance value (Ω) on the Vr to get 1.5v / above on VGPU ?
Haven't measured it, but whan it is soldered on you dont measured the value of the VR but on the whole cercuit that is around 5.05Kohm (?) default
Is there anyone ho has gained any Mhz on the Mem with Vmemmod??
No matter what voltage i set it to i cant get it any higher than with stock voltage!
Is there some other mod i have to do like in the old ati 9700-9800pro days there was 2 mods for the mem...
Hm doesnt it give a pencil-Vdimm mod?
Bios + Pencil Vgpumod is done and it rocks ^^
but now i wanna raise the Vmem...
i've 1 problem, my Club 3D 3870 is the OC edition and the circuit of voltage GPU generator is different.....where's the point for the vgpu's mod???
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/9540/pc180007il0.jpg
This is an image of the circuit (sorry for the quality), thank to all and sorry for disturbe
Here marked in green
Thank Riska :D
So i did this pencil mod on R1222 for increasing vGPU ..
but more than 840Mhz will result in a hang in CSS
so i will try this hardware mod tomorrow.. if I could reach 1ghz GPU ,..it would be cool :)
my cooling is : Accelero S1 + 2x 92mm Cooler
http://jump.and.feel.free.fr/dawa/pcs/x1950pro.jpg
should be enought cooling or not?
thanks but it seems my card backside is slightly different seems like a few more resistors exist on my than the reference ones - see http://i4memory.com/reviewimages/vid...IceQ3_007.html ?
what card and voltage do u have?
i've a 3850 512MB and use same AC S1 + Dual 92x92 Fans@12Volt
my gpu clock is 905Mhz and voltage 1.47volt
temp is max 60°C load
i think the cooling should be enough but i bet i will not reach 1Ghz gpu clock even with more than 1.5Volt
Voltage now is about 1,38 with the pencil mod @HD3850 at 840Mhz core...
and thats not enought for me ;)
ok 1000Mhz is not a "must have" but 900 should be reachable or not?
With 1,5v it should be,...?
and how did u mod it? with a variable resistor or even with the pencil mod`?
I can go all the way to 953mhz stable @ 1.5v, but to get to 1012mhz I require 1.6v!! I only crank it up that high for benching :p
These new ATI cards seem to love the volts, even the 3870s
hmm nice ,.. ok i try one more time to pencil it ...
if 1,5V are possible just with this :)
now i get about 40°C @ idle...
EDIT:
BANG after i penciled it one more time i could get 940 core speed benchstable ;) everything i wanted :)
and the temperatures are really cool with 42°C directly after the Bench 3D Mark 06
Now i got 12099 Points :)
mine 3850 with 1,65 Vgpu can benche A 1026Mhz Core :p and with 2,25Vdimm @ 2200Mhz Mem i don't know why my mems are so low :(
http://www.hwbot.org/result.do?resultId=686058
anybody replace the caps on there cards?  :D ;)
my card used to do 1004mhz core and now that i have the chiller on it. it wont even stay constant 972mhz even. i get the dreaded checkerboard artifacts.
Maybe a sort of coldbug on the card?
My Sapphire 3870 can do 1080/1377mhz on water in my shuttle barebone vgpumod set to 1.65v mem stock.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=4614341
so far i have reached 945/2000 on this viper 3850 256meg card with a pencil and water block running off a nautilus500 which is cooling my old qx6700 aswell....
13346 score 06:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=4615751
I am gonna try the old vmod in blue, on top of that resistor R1222... on my 3850...where is the resistance measuring points for the old vmod?
Also, for this to work do I have to have a vbios that is set at appropriate voltage to "unlock" the hard mod..or does this override the specified vgpu voltage in BIOS?
The measuring point is that resistor itself and i don't think you need a specific bios for it to work. I found that the blue pencil mod is a bit harder to do and I'd recommend using a soft pencil 2H/2B/3B
------------------------------------
that great  i have not really used water cooling but plan on putting together my first WC setup in a couple of months. What water block are you using on your card?
well, whats the technique for second pencil mod? do I have to be careful to how much lead I get on that one too? or...do I just connect the dots with any amount of lead?
how is it harder exactly? It seems like it would be easier to get right amount of lead between 2 ends of a resistor then to try to get the right amount of lead between 2 solder points...no?
The main reason the old mod is harder is the fact its hard to actually get the lead to stay on top of the resistor.
With the second pencil mod i simply bridged it with lead (much easier to apply and it stays), use DMM to measure resistance and simply grazed the lead with my DMM reader to take some lead off. Until i eventually got the resistance up to what i want.
hope that helps if it makes sense
what should be the target resistance of the newer mod?
i penciled the old mod how much i could... and now i get stable 940 with the 3850... so i leave it so.. ;)
and i hope the lead wont get away ^^
I did the old mod as well....penciling it was much easier, those solder points on new mod would just not connect for me...
I penciled it to like 1.249 ohms...Im not sure what vgpu that puts me at...
does anyone know of any measure points for voltage really close to the edge of the board on the side, cuz my vid card is very hard to measure since my cpu heatsink is so huge!...leaves me no room to put probes halfway in middle of card...
on the 3850 the measure point isnt in the middle it is here:
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/622/vcorecm0.th.jpg
sweet! and those are on the outer side of the board right? the side furthest away from motherboard?
Also what about those 2 beneath those points...are those just negatives and not positives like the ones you highlighted?
Or could I measure from those bottom 2 also?
Does the 3870 have OVP or OCP like the 8800's?
If not, and all that is required to get high clocks is an unlocked BIOS and a vCore mod, I think I might save a few pennies and get a 3870 instead.
I dont think so i have had mine vgpu on 1.920volt on a mistake with no problem it can do a full 3dmark06 at 1.850volt and it is not getting hotter than 55c on my water
OVP = over volt protection
OCP = over current protection
thats my pic. its the ones close to the mobo. yes thats the positive side. it wont read correctly form negative. if you dont like that then you can read the volts from... :D

Another question:
In the opening post, one image shows 100k for Vcore, the other shows 500k.
Which is correct / ideal? Is the second one a typo of 50k?
It's not a typo.
But 100kΩ pot works much better than a 500kΩ one.
edit:
Here's a revised pic for alternative vGPU mod points:
Attachment 70538
one 100kΩ Vr is fine and easy tunable
500kΩ should be fine too but it will give you crap Voltage control ;)
I have one question the mod's are the same for both cards ? 2850 and 3870 needs the same Vr's and we solder them at the same points ?
i'am waiting 2x3870 for Vmod :p
Hi modded one of my 3870's powercolor pcs... and well gpu runs 3dmark06 with 1.48vgpu but mems cannot go over 1170mhz and mem default voltage is 1.98v :O should i try to raise or decrease? quite high voltage for gddr4 thought
btw hynix 0.8ns chips
Could you post a picture of the mod KeZzZu? Got the same card so I'm interested in seeing how you did it :)
Here is my Sapphire HD3870 fully modded.
Anyone else having issue to hit 1200mhz with 3870? mine has stock vmem 2v and mems are clearly overheating. 30 secs atitool and errors start to appearing, mems are hynix chips. cooling is crappy alu plate which i sanded clear and added thermal paste. gonna make good copper plate to cool them
ps: uploading mod pic asap
Mine is 1.897v stock and hits 1331 fully playble for hours but cn do 1377 bench
Thats really nice tidy work there riska.
here is powercolor pcs model vgpu mod. Caution i dont take any responcebilities about cracked hardware! shade with caution! measure before use and be sure it's same component lay out! works for me. that component is shaded as you can see ^^

Thanks man i hate messy vmods
Is it fair to say that the memory doesn't benefit from more voltage?
That seems to be the case from reading this thread...
If i connect my 100kohm trimmer from the yellow point to ground,is that correct? Also what do i need to set the resistance to on the pot, before i boot up? My pot is a 100kohm cermet 22 turn
Thank you guys:up:
http://img.techpowerup.org/080114/my mod.jpg
This is not my card which is a his3850 256mb,but the mod is the same for the 3850/70 is it not? apart from the vgpu measure points.
I just want to make sure i do this right.
EDIT-just measured vgpu while 3dmark06 was running, its hovering around 1.23-1.24v
I just put my trimmer on.It is set on max resitance and the vgpu as it booted was 1.24vgpu.So now i just need to lower the resistance on the pot a tad and see if it goes up on 3dmark06 from 1.24v.
well i set the vgpu to 1.36vgpu and tried it at 790mhz core on 3d06.It stomped it,this is with the core at 790mhz and my ram stock. It beat my stock score by loads.
It seems the 22turn trimmer i have is roughly equal to 0.1volt increase per 3 full turns of the screw.
The max temp while running 3d06 with the voltage on 1.36v was 53c using riva tuner to monitor it while i ran 3dmark.
http://img.techpowerup.org/080114/wow.jpg
My old stock score with core and ram stock was 9800
http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?i...olfinalql8.jpg
Got 2 cards in this morning from AtomicPineapple for modding.
Measured the resistance between those points (FB to GND) resistance is 3.88K ohms, so pot value should be...80K I reckon
I had to turn mine down quite a few turns from full(100k) to get to 1.36v,so mebbe 80k is about right.
It works wonders tho'
Heres what i'm upto now-
http://img.techpowerup.org/080114/810 core.jpg
i was putting a jumper on it last night so i can enable/disable the vmod and my gas iron ran out of juice,so i'll try some higher runs today.
you have better driver settings than he has
What driver was you using cha0s?
And riska, were am i going wrong with my driver?
thanks guys
Have you set everything to performance?
Do i set that using the ccc?
Thx
*annoyed*
stock voltages for the cards im modding are 1.37/2.08V...seem higher than everyone elses??
Cards are Sapphire
Mine was 1.24v on bootup stock. My vgpu seems to stay quite steady at 1.36vgpu on 3dmark06.Temps max out at 54c.
Btw,thanks guys,i found the performance thing. What settings does it change?
It sets the quality of the displayed 3d graphics by the card more quality more power is used from the card tu produce it less quality less power is used
Well heres my new mod.
http://img.techpowerup.org/080118/IMG_3170.jpg
http://img.techpowerup.org/080118/Untitled2.jpg
basically, the block with the trimmer on,plugs into the block on the card.there are two measure points on the trimmer block for measuring vgpu.I can disable it by just pulling off the trimmer block.
72KOhms of res for the RAM gives 2.18V, so im gonna suggest a 100K pot for the RAM as well to get the lowest voltage possible reduced a bit. I think the cards I had were set higher than most, so maybe 80K will be fine for everyone else. Will update first post.
Heres mine in action-
http://img.techpowerup.org/080118/IMG_3179.jpg
I set the vcore to 1.34v and rebooted and removed the pot.The resistance at 1.34v is 61.2kohms
Is there enough data yet to say what 3870s and 3850s typically clock to on the core with a Vmod?
It seems the 3870s can go to ~ 1Ghz on the core, while the 3850s go to ~ 850 Mhz?
no i have one 3850 and she can hit 1026Mhz on the core benchable ;)
Is there anyone here ready to do the OCP mod on my 2 cards ? I haven't the necessary competences and tools to do it here and can't find anyone to do it for me in france
If there's someone interested send me an MP
Thanks,
Bye

Man, this thread sort of died.
To get it going again, how about you guys check out the pencil-mod guide I created over on TPU and let me know what you think?
died out :(
Soon I'll get 4 more 3870 card's to mod, but I can't keep them :(
Hello people, this is my first posting at extremesystems. Been waiting for like 2 weeks to get permission to start posting. I need you experts to unleash my card which has given me a lot of sorrow.
I have a Gigabyte 3850 512mb (ultra durable 2). The problem is that it has a different PCB compared to the standard one and runs at lower memory speeds aswell (700Mhz). So I tried a pencilmod by reading some threads, but it didn't work because of the different layout of the PCB.
Now what really drives me insane is the different BIOS it uses. It prevents me from using any of the modded BIOSes.
I would like to ask if someone could take a look a my BIOS and raise the voltage to 3870 levels. It hasn't been done yet for this card and there are more people around the world who are aching to get a modded bios for it.
So please anyone who feels up to it, take a shot. It would be the first modded BIOS of it's kind I guess.
A voltmod (solder/pencil) would be a problem if you know how to find it ....
A BIOS change may be a little difficult, but if the BIOS dosen't have the 862Mhz limit then drop it and do a soldering vmod ;)
All you need is to find the correct IC and find the FB pin, then solder a VR between and off you go :P
Value on the VR you need is the resistens between FB pin and ground x20 roughly calculated
FB = FeedBack
Well I would kinda be more happy if someone could mod the voltages on my bios first.
I have very high hopes for this card, because the PCB is exactly the same as on the Gigabyte 3870 model. So I was hoping a bios mod could give me real 3870 voltages instead of the 1,28v all the other people with 3850 get.
By the way, my card is part of the "ultra durable 2" range. It has high quality components which reduce power consumption and heating. So this is another reason why I have high hopes for this card.
Made pencil vmod, new vgpu is 1.512V :D.
This the results:
Freq. GPU: 1012mhz
Freq. RAM: 1301mhz x 2
