How do you change L3 speed? Ht-link? running Ht-link @ 1400mhz in bios 250*7 Anyting higher whont boot... Try lowering youre Ht link if you have stability issues. F2 bios i more stabil then F3A for my, could run prime for 5h last night with 1,36v know it fails after 50min with more vcore. Lightman have you found any program that meshures CPU temp corect? everest says 104C.... Coretemp reboots\hangs my system...

I can't boot anything higher than 240HTT and even that is not stable! Your stepping looks interesting, I will try to swap my Phenom after new year. For now it's enough :) .
Haven't tried anything to measure core temps. Not an issue for my low clocked CPU :p:

For SuperPi almost no effect, but for Cinema R10 we can see some nice gains, especially in OpenGL test and multi-core rendering :up:

Lightman: My tests at 2420, single channel RAM at 4-4-4-4 same speed with 32-bit CB10 were far lower ... because my HT was 1GHz lower? :confused:

My NB speed was the same speed as yours.

The MultiSpeedup seems awefull, we have seen something like 4.09x on 64 BIT OS in the past. Running some stuff in the background?

That was caused by Phenom's strangely low score in a single thread.

I agree with you, but multispeedup should be at least something between 3.7 and 3.9. trough phenoms native design. Phenom works like a Dualcore with 4 cores instead of 2.

I was wondering same.... It might be that reviewers had a BIOS without L3 hotfix and 5-10% performance penalty?? I'm also confused, but as you can see multi-core efficiency is growing with NB and memory speed. It's also growing with HTT speed.

PS. If you flashed F3A it is best to CLEAR CMOS after that. I find that some of hidden BIOS settings from F2 was still affecting my OC stability. After CLEAR CMOS it was easier to reach 240 ;)

Yes! That's why I'm x64 only for work! It can make huge difference :up: .

I also hope to get 3GHz+!! Maybe not with this exact chip but for sure I will ;) !

BTW do you have any information why with Phenom anything above 230HTT isn't stable?? Is this Phenom issue or will it be sorted with BIOS revisions??

I'm slowly getting to conclusion that my CPU is unstable above 2.5GHz no matter of settings. For sure this has something to do with HTT frequency because if I lower it, I can boot up to 233MHz HTT with 11x multi (boot, not stable). With lowered multi I can do 240MHz HTT but that's it! Not a single MHz more so far ...

While I was playing with every possible BIOS setting looking for stability I did some more testing as well!

In Cinema4D R10 you can gain up to 200+ points in multi CPU test simply adjusting HTT multi. I had 9650 points at 2510MHz with HTT x6 (lowest in OverDrive) and as you can see on SS belove 9876 points with HTT x9 :) . Wish higher HTT multis would work but even if I set 2.6GHz link in BIOS it's still 1.8GHz in Windows.

If you run a single threaded application set affinity to one core because windows will throw it about on many cores randomly and it can mess everything up. For instance, SPi will throw 25%/75% on Core 0 and 75%/25% on Core 4 alternatingly.

Lightman: I'm aware of 64-bit difference, we use them a work regular but the difference shouldn't be this much for me since I run a high NB/HT speed too. We've seen kyosens/stephens tests before this on K10h too on both for comparisons. My scores are looking lower than expected.

I've played with affinity as well ;)

Regarding multi core efficiency I've tested all possible Cinema versions with same effect. Multi speed up between 3x and 3.6x! On the other hand I'm getting pretty nice single core scores :up:

BEWARE.
Be careful when getting bios F3A.
I have just lost my motherboard trying to flash this using windows based @bios.
The bios actually flashed ok but it wouldn't restart. After leaving it overnight I forced a restart this morning and the board is now completely dead. :mad:
So much for Gigabytes dualbios thing :rolleyes:
I'm not too happy about this as you can imagine, so I will take it up with the retailer on monday.

According to the book the only reason this should happen is if the incorrect bios is applied. The Japanese site and @bios both said it was for the 790FX, so I'm not sure what has happened.

Anyway just be careful if you are going down the same route I took.

sorry to hear your 790 based mobo also has died i RMA'ed my msi k9a2-cf-f (ms-7388) mobo on friday it worked (i use this term losely) for about 8 hours i had a phenom 9600 in it for whatever reason fsb wanted to be 209.? so cpu was running at 2404~2405 mhz should have replacement mobo on tuesday so i guess i will find out if it was a issue with IMC or mobo causing OC

I was using @BIOS many times (at least 10) and it worked fine. This board was recovering BIOSes after failed OC several times as well...

Once I even corrupted both F3A BIOS images and board reverted automatically to F2i :)
When board after reset is not POSTing leave it for at least 1 minute because it is trying then to find good BIOS setting or complete copy and it's attempting to re-flash itself! If you reset or switch it off it may cause permanent BIOS damage...

It runs fine for two days with that BIOS. Yesterday i want to turn on the PC -> BlackScreen, fans @ 100%:shocked:

After a few restarts it says "Recovering from backup-BIOS" -> Restart -> PC hangs @ CPU/RAM detection, Clear CMOS doesn't help. So, back to the shop

Until the mobo is repaired, i will try the asus M3A32-MVP.

It's not the first time GB has an official broken BIOS. Think of the F6 for the P35-DQ6 :rolleyes:

I've had an RMA accepted so I think there is something weird going on.

With mine it just never restarted after it had flashed, the flash was successful but when it tried to restart it was just dead.
I left it for two days with the battery out and tried to restart it again today, with no luck, just a dead screen.
So much for the dual bios thing.....

The shop I bought it from told me that there is another revision of the board out now and I might have selected the wrong revision, but I don't think I did.
Apparently that can be critical, if you do select the wrong bios it will kill the board immediately, so take care with that.

This is why I don't trust programs. Manually download bios from the website and manually put it on the motherboard. Relying on programs is just being lazyboned. Even manually useing the program to select the bios from your hard drive is safer then trying to flash it with the program in auto when its oviously flashing it wrong anyways. (I have dual bios chips under my shirt too and I can flash them just fine.)

Just sold my 2900XT, in favor of a Powercolor 3850 PCS card, BUT before I packed my trusty 2900XT in it´s box i did run one last 3Dmark06 round with my X4. And I think i broke the Worldrecord! (if there is one for AMD+Siglecard...)

Geez if I had of known the WR was around that score I would have given it a shot. My 8800 and 6400 were giving me around 11800 points. I know an extra 500 points is a lot but I had a bit of overclock left.

It it possible, that Quad CF (CrossfireX) is not working with current catalyst?
Maybe it need some special driver/patch?
I cant't find any info on ati/amd site confirming that this driver supports quad cf :confused: macci, Samsa, anyone?
Second question is how to connect cards for quad CF properly.
I've tryed all combination, but no sucsess so far, only dual card CF is working.
I have quad CF system about a week now, but can't make quad Cf work :(

The best I can do, is have CF enabled in CCC, but in reality it is not enabled, GPUZ/3dmark sysinfo is telling the same anf perf under 3dmark is equals 1card perf.

I've had to put my Phenom away for a while.
The Crosshair mobo doesn't like the Phenom much. Until a new bios comes out anyway.
I'm back using my 6400 now, but my pc is a mess. I'm just leaving it for now as I'm going away for a month on the 19th, so I will leave it until I get back and then my 790FX should be back from RMA.

Jaan, as far as I know the drivers for quad crossfire aren't out yet, but the good news is they are coming.
Early in the year is what I have heard.
Someone here will know the date.

It must be annoying having all that grunt and not being able to use it.

That's the first retail quad setup i've seen....congrats.

I don't like the spacing on the CFX though, those cards have no room to breath, at least on the GB board...

I've seen some 3 card layouts that look like they'll be good for 3 dual slot cards though,'cept the lowest card will suffer due to being very close to the bottom of the case.

Hope they can come up with something reasonably quick for ya, shame to have that HW sitting there unable to be utilized..

Regarding bridges your setup on picture is wrong... I saw somewhere proper connection, will try to dig it up! Probably it should be Card 1 with 2,4; Card 2 with 1,3; Card 3 with 2,4; Card 4 with 1,3....

Jaan , nice setup ,but your cards aren't connected properly.You have to connect card 1 with card 2 then card 2 with card3 and finaly card 3 with card 4.How much high are your gpu temps?

exactly- this is amd only chance to have top 3d results (for some time atleast) and they not used this :(

I'm pretty sure problem is on driver side.
Like I wrote- i've tryed all possible combination of bridges setup.
cards are very hot, even under 2D i can't hold my finger longer than 1sec on radiator.
Extra fan is first thing to do with this setup.

There is a separate app that enables CrossFire X capability, initial support was included in the last driver set, just until the new panel is released, we have to wait. Talk about hot, I have four 3870s running on the MSI board right now. ;)

I noticed that setting NB multi to 10x results in no-boot if HTT is above default. What is strange I can boot with NB multi 8x up to 262HTT now :D ! NB speed then is about 2.1GHz!

I've got a quick question to you Bingo13 - will GA-MA790FX board feature NB voltage adjustments in future BIOSes? THANKS for reply in advance!

PS. Do you know why Phenom works fine above 2.5-2.7GHz under x32 systems but is completely unstable above 2.52GHz under Win x64??

Yes, Gigabyte will open up NB voltage points. I am working with AMD right now on the X64 clocking, my systems do the same thing, a good 150MHz lower on Vista64 than I am on Vista32 or XP Pro. I will post up another beta tonight, this one is much better than F3B, not perfect yet, but I think the board outperforms the DFI now.

Thanks bingo13 for the F3B bios, I can know boot att 265*11 with NB speed around 2gz+ Working on getting my rig prime stabbel know, Do know know why 3 cores is prime stable at 1,36-1,45v @ 2750 but not the all four? could it have to do with the nb running to high speed? Testing 1750nb\htt know will post results with higer clocked cpu this weekend to!

Do you know what is a cause for weaker OC under x64? Is it related to HTT??
Also I'm still having problems with my 2 IBM 40GB 7200RPM ATA drives. They are disappearing on BOOT, but in Windows both are fully functional! If they're not detected on POST I can't boot from them and F12 boot menu freezes instantly... Must be small bug related to SB600 ;) (It was fine with all F1 and F2 BIOSes)

To make you fill better, my Phenom core1 is not stable above 2.52GHz stock volts and above 2.64GHz at any volts I set :p: BAD CORE :slapass:

it contains the stupid TLB patch, so performance is dismal.

to the point that if the next bios(s) doesn't allow it to be switched off I'm going to pack the cpu in it's box and sell it.. then wait for B3

anyway, hopefully that won't happen.. In the meantime do you have access to F3B by any chance? :)

Looks like AMD wrongly evaluated performance hit of this workaround and they claimed 10% instead of 10x :down:

If that is how this CPU will perform then I think AMD should replace all B2 as soon as B3 is available...

The patch messes up everything if you ask me. But it does help quite a bit to smoother running. If benchmarking, it'll decrease perf. Does with MSI boards anyway.

I think K6-III 450MHz would do better in WinRAR than my Phenom @2470MHz :rofl:

I'm back to my good old bugged Phenom on F3B BIOS :up: It's so much faster!!!! I hope future BIOS rev. will have option to disable that Errata, otherwise I'm selling this CPU....

Sorry guys, the F3D had the patch and the F3C was suppose to be the patch without the TLB fix but with the new optimizations. It appears the official F3C I received for release was not patched correctly. I will get a fix from Gigabyte on Monday, provided AMD allows it. Also, we have word the next AOD release will allow the TLB patch to be disabled, however, it's not working in the current beta copy I am testing.

Another item to be aware of is running EPP memory and the system setting memory voltage higher than 2.2V, it appears in testing right now that running memory voltages higher than 2.25V for long periods of time will burn this core up. How do I know this, well let's just say I have killed my last 9600. ;)

Thanks for the warning Bingo! i must say thoug over the last few bios memory overclocking has become superb! I´m running Ballisitx 8500 @ 4-4-4-10 2,16v @ 500mhz compleatly stable! Why only 2,3vdimm in bios thoug? My and Ligtmans boars do overvolt so it´s realy 2,43 but still? 2,6 Would be nice for bench ;) Drop me a Pm if you need beta testers for new bioses!

Right now it appears to be memory related. Still working on it but I have narrowed it down to memory. In fact, there are several memory issues we will discuss shortly. I found doing a complete CMOS clear, power up, set defaults, power down, and then power up will bring the Boot Menu and POST detection back after a BIOS update on this board.

I must agree with BadNizzle that memory OC is SuperB!! My Crucials BallistiX DDR2 800MHz C4 can do 1020MHz 4-4-4-12-18 1T with only 2.32V (reading from BIOS) and I've tested them 1182MHz 5-5-5-18-24 2T as well (2.43V though) :)

Great work on the BIOS Bingo13! I hope you will get that BIOS from AMD :up:

GA-790FX-DS5 I tried like heck to get my 9500 to work with this board. I could run stable enough for 3DMark, Rendering programs and P95. When I started folding at home it would reboot after about 5 minutes even stock after and optimizing settings. Heat was not an issue not power see below for rig. I was able to reach OC of 2.45 and run a little but I had not learned of the NB problem when I tried it. I flashed to F2 and the problem got worse. I have several sticks of ram so I was able to move them around. I RMAed the chip, after I tested a sensitive 4600X2 Windsor in it. I took that chip to 2.5G no sweat on the same RAM and all I did was, hit F7 (optimize), set ram to 1.9V as called for and raised HTT. Folding 24/7 for 5 days now so I know the mobo is good and the ram.

Love this board and from what I saw in the Phenom, great chip.

Rig:
GA790FX-DS5 ( I know this is a DS6 thread but not much diff in mobos).
GP9500
GSkill PC8000-2x2G CL5 or Wintek PC6400-AMPX 2x1G CL5
PC-PNC Silencer 610 (Little Beast of Power).
TT-Armour Case lots of fans and airflow.
Radeon X850-XT.

I've DLed the 3C and 3D patches but not flashed. I'll wait until I get my replacement chip then see where it stands and the updates stand.

Beware, memory voltages over 2.2 can kill the Phenom over time (AMD tends to agree right now). Believe me, already lost a 9600 with memory running over 2.3V and the system under load. ;)

Yeah! I saw your warning before that test, so it was just for 2 hours. Now I now what my memory is capable of :D .

BTW how it would be with warranty on CPU if it fail because of overvolted RAM? It shouldn't happen if CPU is designed properly... Or is it a GBT design fault?

PS. What are chances of publishing not-patched F3C BIOS? The one you're trying to get for us :) .

I am trying to get official clarification on the voltages right now, if the CPU fails, it fails in my opinion. ;)

Gigabyte is working on patched version of the F3C, either the TLB patch will be removed or an option in the BIOS to turn it off.

Very high VDIMM there Lightman. I would never run that on D9's, known to die with only 2.25V continuous and 2.3-2.35V bench. Some experience here. :( Its shows bandwidth falls with higher timings on Phenom regardless of DDR2 speed though, lower timings at lower MHz wins the day. 400MHz has higher bandwidth/lower latency. :)

Lower the NB-Multi an stay around 2000MHz NB.

must be that nb speed nizzle :( you're on a 5x multi aren't you? I can get the 265 HTT with an 8x that is my LIMIT though regardless.

It is however touch and go.. If I get a lockup that requires a reset, it's no boot for me without resetting power completely, odd. And sometimes it won't boot without dropping it a bit.

-edit. A shame, I reckon if I could see 3Ghz on this NB multi i'd see 24.xx Pi time :)

Your Nuclearus/wPrime is very similar to mine at 2849MHz mAJORD (1780-ish NB 4-4-4-4 1T). The 1M was around 26.5s at 2849MHz. :)

But my board has far too many problems, won't even bootup stock many times, or underclocks to below 2GHz and AOD locks system 9/10 times. It also resets voltages to stock. I struggeled getting 2.2GHz all day today.

396HT ref. limit on MB, 270HT ref. limit for Phenom, around 262HT ref. limit with 11x multi in my testing. And NB speed at 2160 is impossible here. Around 2080 is my limit and it affects perf. very much.

32-bit/64-bit and XP to Vista affects perf in some apps very well too. wPrime for instance is much faster on Vista but SPi is slower.

That's a shame to hear you're having so many problems. I don't think there's anyone not having some sort of issue though. You're not running too higher mem voltage are you? don't want to fry your chip after what some are saying.

I've not benched plus 2860MHz max. No chance, even 2800MHz errors many times. But the last I tried was 2849MHz yesterday with that Pi app and it got near 6350s. I would've benched more had I the time as it wasn't erroring.

Try SuperPrime too if you can. Very good app I reckon. You should be around 1.20m in the 64M I'm guessin.

Also try running 4-4-4-4 1T and then go at these smaller benches again (incl EVEREST). You should be able to do it stock volts on the smaller benches at least (Pi/Pibench/wPrime/Pifast/EVEREST maybe even AquaMark). Not Cinebench/POV-Ray/2k6/2k1 though, they are RAM intensive and will throw errors.

Well, I was running D9GMH@2.3V for almost one year, but that was Value DDR2-533 DIMM. Might be that PCB makes a difference and high performance PCBs are exposing D9GMH chips more than cheap ones...

For daily basis though I'm running them @2.15V 950MHz... (well cooled as well)

I've read your other post and TBH it surprised me that D9GHM can do 1200MHz 4-4-4 with only 2.2V.... Never saw this before, not form my samples at least ;)

Regarding Bandwidth vs Latency I can only agree with you here :)

same symptoms...

Try 10x238HTT with 8x or 7x NB and 1400HTT (or in never BIOS 7x for HTT)
If it will boot up then it's same as mine! (Which means BAD)
