P5B Deluxe: BIOS screens for maximum overclocking success

Had my E6600 at 3 and 3.2 GHZ

Got Unknown Device Driver windows (crash and reboot) ??
Anyone have any idea what this is ?
Got my computer slowed back down and cooled off.
Have not got this error again.

Had it running Orthos all night at 3.2 GHZ.
Did not get any errors.
Core temp said it was running between 55 and 60 C
during Orthos.

Later after I had finished Orthos, it had cooled down to 45 C (idle).
This is when I started getting the errors ??

Let it cool off and went back to 2.4 GHZ. No more errors.

sounds like an issue with your windows install, did you reformat when you got the p5b?

Brand new machine (2 months old).
New windows load.
Unless there is something on here that is a problem.
Device Manager does not show any unknown devices.

Have not seen it before.

What is good temp for E6600 at idle and load ??
Don't have to have the fastest. Want good temp.

overclock as high as you can! test by running 2 instances of orthos

good temps = high overclock

high overclock means add voltage

add voltage = higher temps

I suggest buying a good cooler and you can have your cake and eat it too! :)

as far as good temp well thats in the eye of the beholder.
a good temp to me is -50c load

what cpu cooler do you have?

if you want more advice about cooling then I would go to the aircooling section first.
if you are using the stock cooler that came with your cpu it belongs in the garbage or use it as a paperweight.

did you mount with that stock thermal goop that came already on it or did u use arctic silver 5 or something similar? Also its good to have a good intake fan on the front of your case and a good exhaust fan. this creates a wind tunnel through the case and you will get better temps. also make sure the path is clear of cable clutter otherwise it's not going to be very effective. I'm sure you know this already but I just in case. good luck :)

I'm new to the overclocking scene and need some help on the BIOS settings.
I've followed cableguy's recommended settings save for all the power settings.
I intend to run my system @ 3.2gHz(400x8) daily.
Here are my system specs-

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (B2 Stepping) on a Scythe Infininity
Asus P5B-D Wifi/AP
GEIL DDR2-800 Ultra Dual Channel 4-4-4-12 (Should be D9s)
Antec P180B

I live in Singapore and the ambient temps are around 31 degrees celsius.
Temps at stock speed and voltage are around 55 degress celsius on orthos.

Can anyone give me a hand on the memory settings? There's a load of them.
Also, what voltages should I run the vcore,vfsb and vnb at?

I've managed to get 3.04gHz (380x8) on 1.3375vcore, is this ok?

i got it stable at 3.6ghz 9x400 vcore at 1.5V

and i got the same setup in bios as FCG but i cant get it higher then this and my cpu is 37 degrees 40 when stressed.. so yeah i want it higher but if i put the FSB higher it just wont boot i got bios version 0804
anyone got some idea's what it could be? im trying to find info about it a long time but i cant find anyone else with that problem

(i got Thermaltake Symphony watercooling + Vulcano cpu cooler with 2 fans mounted on it)

got week 30A >< but i cant get it higher at all and yeah i tried that also on my nortbridge but gonna try and set my voltage lower but i got it at 46 on orthos stressed.. so i want it higher but cant get it.. but my job is Intel certified gonna try and change my cpu if its wrong batch number i thought 28B was a good one >< but im not sure at all anymore

I am getting around 60 C Load with TAT.
The Throttle Graph on RightMark CPU Clock drops and bounces back up ?
Also. Does ThrottleWatch work with a E6600 ? It does not display the
graph for Throttle.

i changed my fsb termination to 1.4v and nb to 1.55v and can get higher fsb and lower ram timings than at 1.45 and 1.65v (and nb has active cooling).

Seen that the NB max voltage on that screeny is 1.65V:)

How does the HS cope with this for anyone else whos got their board actually running without problems:p:

can someone help me make a decision. i'm running an e6300 on a p5b-e @ 450FSB with 2x1GB Ballistix DDR2 1000. I want to run 5:4 or 500FSB 1:1 with 6x multi, but the stupid mobo doesn't have enough juice for the mem sticks. i was thinking to swap the mobo for the p5b deluxe for $30 more, but i'm worried the ones at newegg won't do 500+FSB. the other option is to mod the vdimm on the current board so i can pass 2.1v, but i'm not good at soldering and i don't want to measure voltages off the mobo.

i would prefer just getting the deluxe, but am i risking my oc on a board that may or may not do 500+ FSB?

I wouldnt spend money on it. It is 2less what u get back.
HAve u really memtested what ur memory can do with that limited Vdimm?
Running 1:1(@450) isnt that slow compared to 4:5, it is a very little difference.

Btw, running 500 @1:1 needs more juice than 450, dont forget that ;) besides 6x500=3ghz and 7x450=faster:D

So, try to mod or live with it.

2people with northbridge questions,

setting it to 1.65V doesnt have any influence, JUST keep it at 1.55V.

The stock hsf can cope with 1.65v. It get's pretty hot though. I'm going to upgrade mine with an aftermarket hsf.
No it doesn't show NB voltage and temps.

Just wanted to post my progress so far. Finally got some RAM that works... Corsair and their IC switcheroo kinda pisses me off.

But anyway... here are the specs. I am going to do a full night of small FFTs for stability, but I am confident it will pass. So far a quick 2.5 hr blend will suffice. Hopefully my settings might help someone out. First, I started with many of the setting found here.

The voltages/clocks are:

BIOS 804
fsb clock = 490 @ 1:1
Ram timings = 5-5-5-15 (loose for now)
Vcore = 1.4875 (Bios), 1.45 actual
Vnb = 1.55
Vsb = 1.6
Vmch = auto
Vdimm = 2.25 (spec is 2.2 for my sticks)
Vterm = 1.4

Honestly, I don't know if I needed anymore than 1.5 Vsb, but it definitely seems to be happier with 1.55 Vnb and 1.4 Vterm than anything lower.

Also, at about 466 fsb I was running something like Vcore 1.32 actual and had to crank it up bigtime to get 490 fsb. I think I may be able to push a little higher though... hopefully 500+.

Edit: Vcore was actually a touch lower in BIOS than I thought.

Do some memtesting to ensure that memory is stable.
If u have done that, you can run Small Ftt's instead of blend test.

Voltages are set well.
Did u ty with auto FSB term? My pc is now more stable with auto fsb term than with manually selected 1.4V.

Hehe, yeah Henry is the man. He is missing the magic touch this year and has been injured, but nobody can say he isn't one of the best strikers of all time. Some of his goals look practically impossible, yet he scores them anyway.

But enough football talk :) Yeah I am running fsb 500 mhz with small FFT all night tonight. I am currently at 2hrs or so and stable. I don't feel like it will be a problem. Heck, I might leave it like this 24/7 if it is game stable. Temps don't push over 53C or so on core temp with Orthos going. With a smaller overclock I was like 39C on load, but 53C shouldn't hurt anything. (this all assumes the Core temps from the DTS are accurate, which they probably aren't :rolleyes: )

I may try the auto termination voltage at some point and see if I can push further. Right now I am about to mod a case though, so my system will be coming apart in a couple days here once it is ready.

And yeah I did memtest some but only up to 510 mhz at 5-5-5-15. I will get into it more later on if I push for a 100% overclock and/or tweaking my ram timings.

I ran my E6600 at 500 fsb x 9 with everything on auto except for vcore and mem.

However, all baords are not created equal.

I have 2 other P5B's and one reaches 572 x 7 on auto, while the other 2 reach 562 and 550, all with the same cpu and mem. I rma'd a 4th board that wouldn't go over 510 with any multiplier and any settings.

For some reason my 2 wifi's go higher than the non wifi

does any of this make sense? or just pot luck?

Idle temps: +/-47º

If I run it at 333 X 9 (3 Ghz), vcore 1.3875, vfsb 1.45, vnb 1.45, vsb 1.6,
I get 45 C idle and between 55 and 60 C load (Core Temp using TAT). C1E is turned off. Is this bad ?? I have a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro with Arctic Silver 5. Would a Tuniq Tower help ?? Or is it my old Antec case with the 80 mm fans ? I have installed all the 80 mm fans. What is a new case that would provide good cooling, but not be too expensive ?

It is full of 80 MM fans (sucking in the front and exhausting out the rear).
Is this the first thing you would try? Over the cooler ? To help keep my Temp's down.

Hey everyone ive been having some problems ocing my new conroe build.

P5b Deluxe bios 0804 with TT Big Typhoon (idle 40 load 47+)
E6300
Patriot ddr2-800mhz @ 5-5-5-12
Evga 7900 gto
Corsair hx 520

Right now my cpu is running at 2.8 (400x7) and is completely stable with dual orthos runnin for 12 hours. Once i start pushing my fsb higher than 400 though my mem seems to get overclocked past 800 mhz and creates instabilities. I tried lowering the speed through the dram frequency option in the bios but it wont let me go below 800mhz at 400 fsb. How do i set up mem dividers so i can push my fsb higher?

I think my problem is that I need a better Cooler and Case!

I suspect I know the answer to this already but...

Let me start off by saying I know that my RAM does 1080+ mhz, so my problem isn't that.

I can run stable at 505 fsb x7, but a few mhz higher and the computer freezes on the first dual prime iteration. I tried lowering my multi to 6x to the same result with basically every possible voltage setting in BIOS for the mobo. (1.55 vNB and 1.4 vTT seem to work best)

Anyway, I tried back at 7x multi with higher vCores: stuff like 1.5, 1.525, 1.55 and the problem actually gets worse. At 1.55 I can't even boot.

I was wondering if my limiting factor is the processor, mobo, or both? I feel like maybe both are topping out at about the same time, but that is quite the coincidence.

I took the side off my old Antec Case.
With all the 80 MM fans running at full speed I do not feel a whole lot of air flow :eek:

with the Vanderpool technology setting, I cant turn mine off- its greyed out (using ..0804- er latest bios)

after a cold boot you can disable it :)

I saw something posted about not setting Dram Frequency to Auto. Why is this? I thought Auto automatically kept the ram at 1/1 with the FSB. I have mine set to Auto and cpuz reads as 1/1.

Another question is regarding the posts about the pcie setting itself from 16x to 1x sometimes. How do you know this? Where do you go to read which it is?

FSB Termination Voltage - Auto
NB VCore - Auto
SB VCore - Auto
ICH Chipset Voltage - Auto

Any suggestions to voltages to get the 8x400?

In fact I can't get anything other than the 5-6-6-18 even at 2.1 volts. Even 5-5-5-18 won't boot. I'm stymied on this. I would think I should be able to get better than 5-6-6-18.

Holy crap I had a hard time with this. Ran at 3.2 gigs (9x356) with no problems at all. When I tried to go to 8x400 to get same cpu speed, all kinds of issues popped up!

I finally realized the deal about not using Auto for Dram Frequency. Using Auto got me 1/1 but the ram SPD would only run at 5-6-6-18 instead of the 4-4-4-12 it was rated at. Changing the Dram Frequency to DDR800 got me the 1/1 and now the SPD was at 4-4-4-12.

The other issue I had was no matter what voltages I set for FSB Termination Voltage, NB Voltage, SB Voltage, and IHC Chipset voltage, the computer would either not boot, would freeze in Windows or the pcie would change to 1X. I even tried changing the PCI setting to 120. I could boot up with this and the 16x would return but now I lost my IDE controller (yellow exclamation in Device Manager under "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller") and my two DVD drives would not show up.

I was just about to go back to the 9x356 when I tried one last change of setting the PCI to 110. That seems to have done it. Got the 16x back, drives showing and no freezes so far. Still didn't have any luck with the voltages and have them all set back to Auto except for Ram at 2.1 volts and CPU at 1.35 volts.

If I missed something, I'm all ears.

Mounted the phase change cooler on my P5B Dlx today. But when I started clocking, everyting just went to h***... Wasn't able to set one setting without restart. What's your experience with this board and pase change cooling?

Trying to get this 400x8 fsb is kicking my butt (or kicking my system's butt). I ended up going back down to 9/356 to get my goal of 3.2 gigs. I tried everything under the sun to get 400x8 but it's just not stable. When I'm running at 8x400, every single time I boot up from a shut down, I get the 1x deal. I have to then reboot to get it back to 16x. Too much hassle. After my reboots to get the 16x the computer mostly runs ok. I did have something screwy happen one time when I stuck in a usb flash drive. Started hearing screeching sounds from speakers, mouse movement became caddy wampus and cpuz showed some screwy cpu reading of 3.38 gig or something when it was set to 3.2 gig. Scared the crap out of me.

I can do the 9x356 stable, no 16x changing to 1x anymore and still have my ram a 1/1 4-4-4-12. I think I better quit before I blow this thing up!

Evidently once you hit the 400 range, things start to get hairy.

I've seen mention here about a 903 BIOS? The Asus website lists only one, the 804.

mike did you lock pci @33 it sounds like pci is ocing with fsb

Yes, PCI locked at 33.33 and the other at 101.

I've seen mention here about a 903 BIOS? The Asus website lists only one, the 804.

Ther is a 903, 908 and 910 beta floating around.

910 is not beta, today I flash my board with it. In bios adds some USB new setting. OC ~15FSB better than 804.
BTW what was the problematic divider?

hey all ive got a Xeon 3040 running @ 3.0 1.5350v and my bios config is the same as the 1st post in this thread.

my bios is 804

My problem is everytime i run orthos i can run a Large FFT test for hours and the same with Small FFT tests for around the same amount of time... But when i run a blended test it fails in minutes..... I have tried playing with the voltages and everything and no go.... any one have any ideas?

Blend is usually a memory problem. First try this on blend..... from the dropdown menu select "Custom"..... change the "memory to use" box to roughly 1/2 of your system memory. If that does not help things I'd suggest Memtest-ing you memory to it's max, then dropping down 2-3 mhz for a saftey margin in Windows. I've always found my memory is not quite as stable in Windows as my max in Memtest.

maybe just hit the memory with a tad more voltage or loosen the timings some??

they are d9's at 2.4 vdimm and timings of 5-5-5-5-15

ya think they can take more vdimm?

I'm not sure you even need 2.4v? I've run my Ballistix DDR1000 @ 2.15v up to 475fsb w/ a E6400 and 7x multiplier. You need to run memtest.... test #5. Let it run for 30 minutes. If you don't get any errors, startup normally with the same settings. Like I said, sometimes in Windows you will have to back down a few mhz to keep from borking your OS.

Well just out of curiosity I tried the voltage settings in the screen shots at the beginning of this guide and now my pc won't post....what should I do? Is there a cmos clear jumper?:(

turn off the PSU and unpluged it for a minute. Now plug it back in and turn the PSU switch back on. before booting your computer press the Insert key and hold it down. Keep holding the insert key down while you press the power button to start your PC. It should start right up.

On occasion I have had to do it twice in a row for it to post.

My cpu is running at 60C isn't this mega high? My multiplier is 7 and FSB is at 450. I tried to run my fsb at 500x6 and it boots but freezes....
Any suggestions on how I can get my FSB higher and also why my load tem is so freaking high?

high voltage = high heat. try dropping the vcore, i assume since you said you set them to fcg's settings you are @1.5 vcore which is alot.

CHECK IT OUt 3000mhz and stable.... changed the ram timeings and backed down the vdimm to 2.25v presto stable and this chips got more megahurtz in it i hope to hit 3.4 you guys rock.

Would the performance gain even be worth it? And one last question, I'm currently running the 0804 bios... Are the 0908 bios for the p5bdeluxe interchangable with the wifi version? Are all the p5b deluxe bios usable for al lthe deluxe version boardS? If so, where would I get the 0908 bios from? =)

To get over 500 stable raise your NB and SB voltages.
What is your memory timings at 960? Try loosening timings/raise memory voltage and test using memtest to see if your memory is stable at 1200. There is a bandwith improvement even with looser timings. My Pcmark, 3DMark and Pi scores improved for me.
The 0908 or 910 Bios also works for the Wifi. I am running 910 with no problems. The only improvement I have seen is the ability to run the same OC with a little less vcore.

Is 56c your load temp? If so your fine. If it is Idle you need to improve your cooling or lower your vcore which will reduce your OC.

It runs fine. I have run Orthos for 6 hours on Blend. I have looped 3DMark 03 and 05 for 2 hours. With the volts on 1.225 it says it has 1.18 at idle and 1.16 under load. My temp is 43c at idle and 60c load on pc probe, 41c idle 56c on Intel Thermal. If I set the V Core to Auto it chks. 1.12 in pc probe. If I turn the V Core to say 1.3 the temp goes up. I'm wondering if I am not getting a true reading.

I don't know how you guys are running the mega fsb's over 400 without losing 16x PCI (it changes to 1x). At least that's what happens when I try to hit 400 fsb. Kinda defeats the whole deal if you plan on using a good vid card in games.

How do i know what my pci-e is running at? How do I check?

If I put my NB Vcore to anything LESS then 1.55 I have the 1x issue.

just built my rig and i'm having some evil temp issues. It's at like 53C idle, 70 Orthos load (less during SuperPI oddly). THis doesn't seem right for the setup, I've already reseated the HSF and changed out the Scythe goop for OCZ Ultra 2 I had lying around.

Rig and voltages:
P5B Deluxe w/ 0804 bios
CPU: E6600 @ 8x420 (3.36ghz)
RAM: Crucial Ballistix PC2-8000, running at 2.15V, 1:1, 4-4-4-12
HSF: Scythe Ninja Plus (original, with the backplate)
--the Scythe fan is on the RAM side blowing through the HSF
CPU Vcore: 1.425 (probe reports 1.38 in windows)
FSB Termination: 1.3V
NB: 1.45V
SB: 1.6V
ICH: 1.215V

Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to push further but these temps already scare the hell out of me.

I have the exact opposite problem. Anything over 1.55 and it drops to 1x. I have set the bios at 1.45 and then use my VR(voltmod) to raise it to 1.6 and it still drops to 1x so it is either the bios detects the voltage and drops it due a poor bios code or it is a design flaw.

DCarez ... Your IHS may not be flat and need lapped. Or your heatsink.

Anyone have any idea why in windows when I go to the system properties it reports me as running 4.3ghz when I'm only running at 3.37?

System assumes you're running at max/native multiplier when you're not.

I'm having the same problem with heat. At Idle my system is almost 60C WTH could be wrong with this picture? BTW when you say the IHS might not be flat...what is IHS? :D
I'm using the Arctic silver 5 stuff...is this stuff good or should I be using something else? Possibly I need to take my Tuniq Tower off...clean it and the cpu and reconnect it... think that might help? What could possibly be the culprit and also what should a normal/decent idle speed be with a e6600@ 3.37 with a tuniq Tower 120 and cpu core volt of 1.4?

Same thing here on NB voltage relating to the 1x issue. If I set anything MORE than 1.45 volts, I get the 1x. If I set it to 1.45 or less, computer won't boot (at anything at or above 400 fsb. So I'm stuck. It's why to get my goal of 3.2 gigs (which I'm happy as a clam about), I had to settle for 9x356. For my system it's the definite sweet spot.

With 910 bios I am currently able to run my northbridge voltage at 1.57 with my vmod before the 1x problem kicks in. I have found that when the pc boots at 1x I will pull the power plug for 10 secoonds and then turn the pc back on it will boot at 16x.

That's just not acceptable to me. I had that same issue at 401. Didn't take me long to say, "enough of this". That just cannot be a healthy condition for the system.

I got to hand it to you guys that have been able to get a 400+ FSB that is STABLE. I gave it my system's best shot but couldn't get it. I think I wanted over 400 just to say, "I could" but in all reality my 9x356 @ 3.2 gig is still above Intel's $1000 processor so I can't complain. :)

geez!!! i guess i must be lucky then.

i run 8 x 475 with 1.65 volts on the NB and don't lose 16x pci-e frequency.

For those guys with troubles with 500FSB+ you can try raising ICH Chipset Voltage up to 1.215V. I make that for 500FSB+, otherwise there is no boot or stops in Windows boot screen and actually the SB voltage i don't use 1.8V, with 1.6V is fine for me up to 500FSB, over 508FSB i need raise it :)

umm help i was benching and the system shut off and it will not post.... it does the double boot then does nothing??? wtH.... Iv reset the BiOs and nothing took out the ram and still does the same thing without ram... ive taken everything off the system and still nothing happends... took out the vid card and still no go.... umm i have a Xeon 3040 and a P5b-d Did i kill the Xeon??

You may need a stick of ram that will boot at low voltage, go into bios and increase the voltage to watever your power sticks require then shut off the power supply and add the correct ram modules. You have no listed your system specs so I cant really help. This is what I am assuming since you've reset the bios.

It might work with just one stick to boot up with, first try one stick then if that doesnt work try another one. May also be a damaged stick.

probably toasted that psu if you were 3d benching w/ a 8800 and a overclocked c2d you can exceed the capacity of that ultra easily. try a different psu. and also don't rule out the memory without checking it first.

nope PSU reads good. This Ultra has been a great PSU and has POwered a overclocked 9750Gx2 and a presler 930 @4.5.. I dont care what ppl say about ultra's the Xfinity line is a good PSU and Ive tested this one and its still solid.

I really need to lap this CPU. This Ballistix RAM is incredible:

E6600 @ 3.2 (401x8) 1.4vcore bios, 1.36 probe idle, 1.34 load
DDR2-8000 Ballistix rated 5-5-5-15 500MhZ @ 2.2V, running 4-4-4-12 at 500MhZ @ 2.25V (why is there no 2.2V option in my BIOS?)
My temps still suck on the CPU, though. :(

I'm having the same problem... (as is MRT2 I see). Similar setup to DCarez but with a 6700/Corsair/Zalman9500 and only oc'd to the same point 3.2ghz (which should be less stressed than the 6600 put to the same place). Really bummed on this as it seems way too hot! I'm going to lap the cpu tonight and give it another try.
