I believe some people have had problems with previos bios's while others have got voltage setting issue and probably others both.

With F9 and your setting, I think you "may" have a marginal voltage problem. Its probably either Vcore or your (G)MCH.**I can actually cause a cold boot issue on my rig (and fix it) with F9.

Before you go to bed tonight, set these voltages and then raise the FSB back up (testing all is ok before you turn of course).

Actually change your ram to +5 (although I think +4 is ok)

These may be a "little" higher than you need, but certainly aren't going to hurt and you can test these down later.

Please let us know how it goes, I am fairly convinced F9-DS3 and F7-S3 has mostly fixed both the cold boot and 450FSB issue.

I've read default on a 965P DS3 is around 1.2V so, yes in a perfect world you'd be at 1.5V

Did the board hold its settings initially? and then you left off for say 20 minutes then it lost it? (cold boot)

Yes, it will hold the settings until powered down.

On save of bios settings: long series of beeps, warm boots a couple of times...boots to xp.

Power down. Did not leave it off for 20 minutes. 1 minute max.
Turn system on, power up, power down loop, ends with no video (black screen of death).
Manual power down and turn on again, it will then reset to 266x7 with memory settings to auto.

Yeah I have the same. I'm always afraid with those power up/down loops, I think it's very bad for my HDDs !! :eek:

D9GMH are not fafbody as i know.Rectangular ones are not fatbody memory.
My D9GCT also runs well on DS3 and its not fatbody.Most fatbody has D9D markings as my D9DQW and they dont boot on DS3.

OK...if that were the case then why did GB update the JMicron bios to 1.06.59?...there are many reasons to update bios ROM's...while everything may work fine there are always things and scenarios whereby things are broken.

In addition updates improve performance in some cases, add new features, bug fixes, compatiability updates, expanding device support etc.

Add to that i feel if updates exist then they should be implemented, same reason why GB update the QFlash utility.

My RMA replacement came in and it was a Rev 2 board.

Last night while testing different memory multipliers, I had the FSB at 900 and was doing some testing. I put the memory on 2.5 which I believe is a 4:5 ratio. I saved out of the bios and it turned off like a bad overclock. It turned back on and off about 6 times, each time saying it was recovering the bios. It would stay on about 5 seconds and then turn off again. Then it just turned off.

When i turned it on, the bios was gone. No combination of clear cmos, removing battery, booting with only one memory stick and video, clearing cmos again, removing battery again, shorting the battery connections, Nothing worked.

It won't post ...........nothing on the screen...........and it wont flash from a diskette except through qflash and you can't get to that without posting.

So this piece of crap is back in the box and there will never be another GB board in my machine. I have my trusty C19-A SLI back in with all the same components and it is perfect. So it wasn't my components that did this. THE SECOND TIME BY THE WAY!!! The DS3 has some serious issues with the P4/PD.

Buy someone elses board.

By the way bios F9 is exactly same as F7.Nothing has changed and D9D memory still wont boot.Even benchmarks 1:1 to older version F7.No change in overclock or cold boot.Will replace with nvidia 650i mobo soon.May be rev.2 DS3 may work with D9D- please give information.

DS4 F7 bios and still cannot boot over 399mhz fsb, freezes and reboots in boot screen :(, but luckily they have remove that boot&shutdown thingy..i guess

No, I could care less about your CPU. I just don't get why one day you loved your new mobo and the next day, after you killed your second board in the exact same manner as you killed the first, you now hate it.

And having to see your experience cut and pasted on multiple enthusiast boards doesn't make that any easier to figure out.

Hasn't it occured to you that you may be at fault in regards to the death of your DS3 motherboards? I don't see a whole lot of people besides yourself having this problem with the DS3. I see a bunch of posts on a bunch of boards but they are all the same one guy.

I was really hoping you were gonna have better luck after hearing your experience on the first DS3. But I was not even a bit surprised when it happened again, especially after I saw you claim a 4.48Ghz O/C on the second board. Those who can not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Good luck... seriously, I mean that. :toast:

P.S. You might look into a better power supply. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if it was the thing frying out your boards. ;)

That helped to raise to 975mhz~, but then when mem 1000(fbs 400mhz), no boot

"D9" is Micron's way of saying "this chip is DDR2 packaged in FBGA".

There are many totally different chips with part ID that begins with "D9"
D9GMH nor D9GKX are not fat body chips.
There's 2 kinds of "Fat body" chips, D9DQT (BT-3 = rated 333MHz) and D9DQW (BT-37E = rated 266MHz).

Now that was nice work with a DMM :woot:, I'd have done the reading mysef if it weren't for;

#1) I'm a lazy guy.
#2) My DMM is crap, can't really trust a 10 yo, $15 DMM.
#3) The MOSFET with V(g)mch reading point is AFAIK hidden behind the graphics card, can't reach it.

Interesting seeing Normal = +0.3V when in OC mode. That was news to me.
Think I'll stick to +0.1/+0.2V. I feel more comfortable with that.

finally! got solid oc 24/7 and am done f...ing with it. for those with cold boot issues, i highly recommend going back to f5. if it were more stable i'd keep a small horse in it, and not bad recovery for failed oc's. keeps my oc at 430x8 1:1 all day. settings:

multi = 8
fsb = 430
pcie = 102
ram multi = 2
all other ram timings are on auto
all voltages are on normal after seeing handle's post. thanks.

after all that just leave on normal works at those speeds. so simple. i can warm boot up to 450x8, haven't tried over that, but it won't hold at 440 or above. then do get the cold boot issue. may hold in higher 430's but a few ticks ain't worth it. i need more cpu speed than mem speed so not going to lower the multi and try higher mem frequencies. from what i read i believe f5 does have d9 issue so those running in the 1000's prob not for u.

i'm dual booting vista64 and xp now so can post some screenies to check out. idle temps are 36-40C and load in high 50's. i think i can live with these volts and temps for a while anyway, next move is to H2O

F8 bios is F**KED!!...first off there is an error with the new QFlash, i had beta F8c and it had version 2.00 for QFlash...i connected my Floppy as normal inserted the Floppy and it gave me "master boot record invalid"...wtf??

It said to press any key, so i did and this new window opens up and says Floppy, so i press enter and then it check the sub directory and finds the F8 bios....what the hell?

While i have OC to my normal 425x8 it was nesscary to increase G(MCH) and FSB by 0.1V, with F7 and previous bios this was never the case, i never needed a voltage bump....add to this i haven't even shut down the PC yet to see if the cold boot issue exists, but will do soon.

Because @bios sucks?, the PROPER way to flash is using a Floppy drive, if however GB have updated QFlash to allow for flashing by a USB flash drive i will use that, but i still need a Floppy...or at least until Vista drops, and those unattended Windows CD's always crap out on me.

I'm hoping to new rev 2.0 board which arrives tomorrow will be better for me.

Speed bump!...when using the new Intel Matrix Storage drivers version 6.2.1.1002 (dated Oct. 31st 2006) i got a good 2MB/s speed increase.

I am now hitting 140MB/s with my RAID array...woot!
Now Lestat...don't tell me and updated bios ROM would now help!, i bet it would boost performance even more.

Well 9x300 or something, but it didn't or whole F7 bios haven't any effect on that 399mhz fbs wall which is problem with any bios at now. Whoever put that in your head is so wrong. :rolleyes: Flashing with floppy is not the proper way to do it, sure it was in like early 1990s when all there was was floppy drives and zip drives. I remember using the first windows utility to flash bios in windows 95 and never EVER had a problem with it on hundreds of systems over the years. In fact most servers now flash with software cause does not require going to location.

One could argue flashing with floppy is worst method now.

edit: Asus is soon going to be %100 software in windows flashing. They must not like your proper way i guess.. :)

Floppy is dead for many people now including me. @bios work very well and I tried every BIOS/BETA BIOS that GB did and never had problem at all.

Just my :2cents: I have puked a few bios flashes using software/internet flash utilities...the last time it happened to be a Gigabyte 478 board a couple years ago...that being said I have never borked a flash with a floppy, ever.:up: Probably just jinxed my next one :eek:

Well im sure some have borked both ways, but I doubt the % between the 2 are no different now-a-days. Just when you know dell ships computers without floppy drives, its hard to argue floppy drive is "proper" way.

someone else asked me that a while back and it's LL i guess? it's rated at 44412 i believe. here is the part # PDC22G6400LLK, i got it from the egg. i did see that post, and i have hit 1000 and over in the past doing your bumping method, the problem has always been cold boots. once i shut down, the next restart it either loops endlessly, which i call loop and poop cause it shiiites all over itself, or just sets the cpu host control back to disabled and boots at 266fsb. that's the cold boot issue. tell your friends at gb to turn their computer off after they get over 1000 with their awesome method and maybe they'll see what the f we're talking about. you have a ds4, so maybe yours holds it's oc better than the ds3, or you got a lucky board of the lot

Its been fun and I'm calling this build done. When I started the goal I had was to get E6600 stock performance out of this E6300, then the next goal was X6800. I could not a have reached that goal without all of the input from the board members. Thanks for all the info.

I've settled on S3 F6 and 480x7 for daily use. I can turn my system off and on as often as I like. That's kind of important to me. Hooked up water this morning. Silence, that's important too.

From what i've been told it usually means flashing with the wrong or bad bios file but I'm not sure.

IMO it's down to just being lucky with the hardware you got and people hoping to get 500fsb+ with a new bios on DS4 seems like they will have a long wait as from F6 they seem to be getting worse as with my E6600 on F5 i could hit up to 512fsb...then tried F6 and no go @ 500fsb....Now with my E6300 with F4,F5, can get up to 500fsb and not a penny over....again using F6,F7....no go @ 500FSB!

About flashing, just download the Award winflash tool or whatever they call it. Couldn't be simpler, and it doesn't even look like :banana::banana::banana::banana: like some other software I could name.

Still holding my OC, but have noticed an oddity which i hope others have experienced. It's a bootup lag, like a slight delay when POSTing...this is a new thing that has creeped in with F8....anyone else experienced this?

Also, using QFlash 2.03 can people confirm that it is possible to flash bios using a USB flash drive?

Also, what are these new options in "Advanced Chipset Features"?, what do they do and what are they aimed at?

So far F8 seems to be *ok*, but annoyed i've had to increase voltage the FSB and MCH.

Setting in windows with clockgen is only way to get 400mhz+ fbs, but it's really frustrating always to set 9x445mhz manually, althought it takes only couple seconds. Clockgen has some attributes set bus when starting, but it doesn't work. But using Clockgen gives another problem..it gives speedhack feature, which "disables" internet gaming :(

If GB don't fix that problem(and they probably don't), dam sure will be my first and last gb motherboard.

and Remember when you found your stable OC save it on profile in BIOS

Important Note from GB* : if PSU could not make all power that your OC want for start (like 3.6GHz + 1000MHz 2.3v + etc!!!) then CMOS automatically become Clear for booting and this is cold boot issue that guys told here

I would think you'd get better benchmarks all around with a higher FSB like 7x469 (same Ghz as 8x410). Check memory bandwidth and some real world benchmarks. I know you want the magic # of 1Ghz+ ram, but I think your system would be more stable at 2:1 (1:1).

Tons of memory bandwidth doesn't really do too much for modern processors with large L2 caches and good prefetching systems after a certain point. Look at the move from 939 to AM2, a lot more bandwidth, nearly zero improvement! Conroe already has enough memory bandwidth.

I recently bought a 965-dq6 i flashed it to the f8bios was wondering how high fsb can i take it to and with what voltages and changes do i need to make. highest i can get so far is 405fsb i using e6400 with g-skill6400hz any help would be nice :)

Yeah, the the board occaisionally resets to mult x 266 on a cold start - that is the cold boot issue we are talking about. Basically it loses the overclock on a cold start.

Well, if this is some sort of semi-official stance on the problem of issuing unsafe (final) BIOSes for 4 mobos without any decent quality control and at least some superficial checking, I am afraid that merger with Asus and all the implications (fight for positions, technology, etc) is not going to fare well with intended customer base. Makes me wonder what was the RMA rate during last few days?
It starts to look like DFI situation from NF2 days (and later, brilliant motherboards with terrible support or design flaws), and the end result was not a happy one (disaster in progress).

Your friends comment about PSUs is nice, but completely out of context in this case, as all the mboards on this and other forums worked quite nicely before (ok, more or less:p: )...

Overclock still holding guys, i dropped the (G)MCH and FSB voltsages down to normal...she's booted. Now the test is to shut down and see if it will then boot.

Yep, when I couldn't get 8x410 4:5 stable without +0.3V (g)mch I tried 7x469 1:1 instead. It was stable with only +0.1V (g)mch and ... it was faster too.
Boooring, buuuu but it was still faster overall.
Only in WinRAR 8x410 4:5 can win ( and maybe in 3DMark2001 too ), else it's clean sweep for 7x469 1:1.

Agreed, I was using F6 for S3 and never had any cold boots or resets with the same overclock. With F7 have already had a cold boot and some resets. Nothing since increasing vdimm +0.1 but that might just be coincidence.

i have 2 builds, 1 with C1 and 1 with C2. i don't have time to read back in thread so may be redundant here but .5 day of playing i've found these differences:
C1 won't hold oc over 420. stable on 420 all day.
C2 has held 450, only moderate amounts of power downs so far though but has held everything from 420 to 450 no prob in .5 day of testing

hardware differences:
C1 has 4x 1 GB patriot ddr 800, bfg 7950 gt video, and xclio 500w greatpower psu
C2 has 2x 1 GB patriot ddr 800, crappy video card, and rosewill 600w psu.

other than that they have same case, fan setup, raid array, etc. and both are on f5 bios. same temps are reported in coretemp. difference could just be chip itself, but could C2 hold the oc better? psu is better? i'm gonna try to even out the variables as best i can and do some side by side testing in the next couple days. let me know if this has been determined already.

I experienced the same while using the F8 - no more than FSB405 MHz. Came back to F7 and now everything is fine - more than FSB450 MHz. F8 was not good in my case.

Guys, i got my DQ6 rev 2.0 this morning!...sooo damn sexy, i'll note differences in more details later. As for my rev. 1.0 with F8....still holding strong at 425x8, but when i tried to drop the (G)MCH and FSB voltages back to normal it disabled my OC.

So i then tried bumping the voltage from 0.10V to 0.05V...it works, obviously the less voltage increase possible is always a good thing. So far things seem real nice at these settings.

I may tried going much higher on the FSB to see where i crap out, 500x7 would be cool.

C2 board with 600w psu has not cold boot issued yet. over day of testing. max so far is 458x8. can't get 460 stable yet but might try cpu volts. to get to 458 i set cpu volts manual to 1.425, and no go. i lowered it to 1.38 and booted fine. weird, maybe more voltage isn't always the answer. anyway cupz shows voltage at 1.125 even though i set at 1.38. is it know to not report right voltage, or is my board crazy? here is screenie..

i am going to but have to get both systems in same place. 1 at work 1 at home. might be a few days b4 can swap hardware. just got the ok to build 2 more systems, thinking about going with an asus board. seems to be higher fsb's without cold boot issue, but do they have the solid capasitors and are they as long life as gbyte. i've had an old gbyte amd board from 5 years ago that's been oc'd and still solid as day 1. i'm staying with the 6400 chip for sure, i think best value for $$. anyone have suggestions who might have dealt with the asus line oc'ing with the c2d?

I have oc'd a 6300 on both an s3 and a p5b. Everything is fairly strait foward just like the s3/ds3 bios I've used. However, asus included an option to keep pci bus at 33.33mhz which the s3 doesn't have. I have the p5b-e so the memory voltage is limited to 2.1v. THe p5b-e plus and deluxe don't have this limitation. I think rev 2 of p5b-e goes up to 2.4v or so. As far as my experience with both, the asus is much more trouble free. I used 3 s3 mobo's and 2 were crap. THe one I'm typing this on will do 500mhz fsb @ 3500mhz with a 6300 and g.skill hz's. I just need my infinity to get here to keep her cool. The only other difference I've noticed is eSATA and firewire are on the asus not the s3.

This is my first gigabyte mobo, and if i'd had trouble with it like i did the other two, I'd have gotten the p5b deluxe. I guess I'm just lucky for once (knocks on wood).
What pll does the s3 use for memset?

I got this board and straight outta the box flashed the F8i bios. Until there is a huge consensus on a future final bios,
I ain't going to change it. I have been lucky (very) that this board has not done anything but behave;
no cold booting or peripheral issues, holds my oc, and doesn't display any of the other pitfalls some of y'all have had :(

The only thing disappointing was not being able to boot Windows @ 500 fsb, even after a wet attempt with
a buddy's extra wc rig. I have to say that this huge Zalman cooler is doing a great job
replacing the Thermalright SI 128 I originally used.

Back from new years stuff. Before I left, I flashed F9 to my ds3 and tried 3.6ghz (8x450) and increasing vcore and orthos. It seems high vcores don't work right (didn't verify what actual values are with DMM) but best it could do was in the 1.5xx V's. I also went to watercooling at the same time (though it's a bench setup right now). It's leaking some water somewhere, but I'm not seeing any puddles. It's been a few days and after I got back from vacation, I noticed the machine was dead. The res was half empty (so not too much water loss but still I can't find any pool currently). On power cycle, it does the cycle on/off. Video card been having issue as well, so I gave it a few whacks and now it's booted back down. Guess I've finally been infected with cold boot as of F9. F7 was fine for me.

After seeing how 1:1 is more stable and faster, especially given that 460fsb puts performance about same as 400 in lower strap, what the hell, I'll aim for it. Only problem I see is the cold boot situation. And the fact that it looks like it just refuses to be orthos stable at 3.6ghz (longest known stable was 13 hours. let it try again and machine was hung when I checked it days later). Kind of puts a damper on everything though since I was easily 3.2ghz stable even with stock cooler. Went water with hopes of being able to feed vcore to gain 3.6ghz stability, but with 1.5v temps goto 60's in coretemp which isn't bad but still no stable. Boo

I have a question to ask i have a dq6board using f8 bios the ram im using is g-skill 6400hz with timmings 4-4-4-10 the highest i seem to be able to reach stable is 405fsb using 1.45vcore normal pcie and fsb volts .1vmch and .25 vdimm can anyone help plz is there something i should dissable or up in the bios i would like to reach 450 and i know its possable i can with a lower mult

i have just ran into a problem with my dq6 board no matter what vcore i set it says vcore fail even on auto i tryed flashing back to f7 but still the same i weird because i can still up the vcore and it stays that way even though health in the bios says its failed whats going wrong?????

then if you buy motherboard with non-solid caps and you live in hot air + OC means 65-70C you still will have about 30.000 Hrs lifespan and I know anyone of us dont keep motherboard over 10000-15000 Hrs then forget Solid Caps and try P5B-E rev1.02 or higher with 965-C2 chip + E6300 @ 472x7 means 3.3GHz
also you can use Biostar 965 TDeluxe its great and cheap mobo and it can do 470x7

yeah I was so close to getting the biostar but somehow ended up spending more on the ds3. In hindsight that was probably a stupid idea

I have the S3 and I think it's the new F7 bios that I just put on it. ATM I'm running 7x505 with OCZ PC8000 stuff (D9). I really haven't had much time to sit and tweak on it but right now SPI 1m is 14.516.

Yeah the ability to get over 1000 Mhz looks good. Now if only they can make it run tight at 1000 Mhz I'd be happy.

I have a Crucial D9 memory kit coming soon. Hopefully my board will pan out with either a e6300 or e4300 now.

Well, I got my infinity yesterday and I'm very happy but man this thing is huge. Anyway, I set my voltage to 1.406** and booted at 3.33ghz and it works wonderfully, but the vdroop is 1.39 idle and 1.36 load. I tried 3.5ghz and it works fine, but when I put it under full load I think the vdroop is so bad that it turns itself off, it reboots fine and boots to windows fine, but under 100% load it powers off. I haven't raised the voltage more yet because I wanted to get an opinion on here before I risk exploding my new 6300. Is this problem due to just vdroop or is something else wrong?

well, changing the 600w psu to the c1 board did nothing. must just be that the c2 is better with higher limits. also swapped processors to be sure it wasn't a cpu limit. the c1 board holds 420fsb no cold boot issue, the c2 holds 450 no prob. have a p5n-e with the nvidia 650i chip on the way for 1 of the builds, want to see how compares to ds3. both about same $. is the ds3 rev 2 coming out in usa anytime soon?

Do a pencil mod. Easy to do and no Vdroop at all. So you end up with lower Idle temps!

I thought it was determined that the vdroop mod for the ds3 was more detrimental than good?

I never had cold boot issues with the F7 it shipped with. But with F8 and F9 I'm getting crazy cold boot problems.

I'm not sure 8x450 is stable. I setup water cooling and tried orthos. First time it failed after 13 hours. Then I bumped vcore a little more and tried again. But then I went on vacation for 4 days. When I came back the system was dead and there was water by the cpu block. I dried everything up and the system booted again although it did a crazy cold boot and came back at 8x266.

I'm going to be redoing my water setup and hopefully cut up my case and put it in. But I'm hoping for 7x500 or something this time. It might need less vcore.

For 8x450, I was setting like 1.58v and getting around 1.49v under load. coretemps were around 65'c with apogee block.

i've the exact same problem! I was palying whit memory timmings trying to get 4-4-4-12 at 1000ddr (g.skill 800 ddr2 hz) whit the bus at 333. I've tried these settings several times without success but i was always able to reset the systems and i was hoping for a better result whit the new f9 bios. Now, after the system had turned on 2 times saying it was recovering the bios, the board won't post. It turn on and off in intermittent way for about 5 second.
removing battery, clearing cmos, etc, nothing worked...

Rma time? or there is some trick to reset it?

Does suggest "many" people with the latest bios still having 450FSB ish issues and cold boot issues may be wrongly assuming its a bios issue still or even board issue for that matter.

I've (before doing the pencil mod) read lots about it on few forums. And I think i pretty much saw positive comments. Only a few said that their oc wasn't as good - my were the same. Anyway i was gettting a terrible v drop. it would drop from 1.4 to about 1.3 So i had to have my voltages very high for it to be stable at in load. so i did the mod and worked like a charm. again idle temps dropped a good amount since i didn't have to raise voltages for it to be stable in load. I need 1.56 for it to be stable at 3.3 :( but mostly run it on stock voltages and 3.0 that way my temps are in the low 20's idle and mid 30's load. But again i just use the easytune when i game to go from 3.0 to 3.3. I def feel the difference in that bump in FSX, and wish i was lucky with my cpu to clock it higher but can't.

I've also build a system for my friend 2 weeks ago and he got the same board but with a new rev. His vdrop was so small that i didn't bother with the pencil mod. So it depends on your board how much vdroop you get.
