hmm.. i was thinkin the same thing.....

Guys, some important info in case anyone wants to build another monster rig using the Z7S:
Do NOT use the Intel 9 series chipset drivers if you're running a Raid 0 with 2 Velociraptors and Vista 64.
Took me all of one day to figure out what went wrong, I experienced severe stuttering during 3D benches (Far Cry 2, Crysis etc) and eventually, freeze/BSOD. Also the Intel Storage Manager kept claiming one of the HDDs was faulty. So after scanning both drives repeatedly for errors and finding none, I just reinstalled Vista and this time, used the drivers from the Asus CD (which contains version 8,6 of the Intel driver) and voila, it works just fine now.
Rig specs: Dual X5450, Dual HD4870X2 CF, 4x2GB Buffalo FBdimms, 2x 300GB VR in Raid 0, 1TB WD RE3, Dual PSU, CPUs/GFX/HDDs watercooled, Dual pumps, 3 Dual rads :wasntme:
Maybe some pics tomorrow ;)
Unfortunately, I found my budget just wasn't going to match my desires. I had ever so grand plans for the Asus Z7S WS, with a pair of Xeon 5400 series at a couple hundred bucks each, plus about $1000 worth of RAM (16 GB), plus the top of the line case and power supply and a Blu-Ray DVD burner for optical drive, and probably a set of SCSI SCA drives in an Icy Dock enclosure. All told, that desire was going to cost at least 3 to 4 times what I ended up with for a budget, and thus I posted what I ended up with.
I had learned a great deal from this thread, and it definitely helped me improve the process of getting that hardware together, so I felt it appropriate to give back in the form of details on how it all turned out.

Vista (Ultimate, not important, all Vista Versions are the same really) 64 like I said.
ok, ill remember that, i am using vista64 with a raid 0...
I figure the next time I update, it will have to be to a system with 64GB of RAM or more, and probably at least 32 cores, if not 64. However, back in the REAL world, I'll settle for finding a Vista 64-bit driver (for Ultimate) for a Panasonic LF-PB271 (OEM version) Blu-Ray DVD Drive with Read & Write capability for Blu-Ray discs. I started my Vista Ultimate 64-bit install and it's looking for a driver disk... I've searched the web for the last 3 hours and haven't come up with much more than what might be a firmware updater program. Even Panasonic's site seems strangely empty of any drivers for it.
Any/all help appreciated.

I just found the following MS KB article: 928253, which does a great job of describing the problem I have. The only difference is that I'm seeing this problem during installation.
However, given the nature of the problem, it seems likely that the way to get to a solution is installing a regular ole IDE DVD-ROM drive temporarily until I can get Vista installed, and then installing the new SATA DVD drive as an "upgrade".
I'll have to give this a try and then maybe send Microsoft a bill for the SATA DVD-ROM I ordered last night after talking to them and having their only suggestion be to try a different DVD drive.
I've also found several other articles online that suggest for 64-bit Vista installation:
1.) Disconnect any HD's other than the one you're installing on (MS suggested this too, and I complied with no effect).
2.) Remove any/all peripherals
3.) Remove any RAM beyond 3GB
As for the logic behind any of that, all I can say is that those kinds of limitations existing just to install the operating system mean that either the programmers at MS are extraordinarily incompetent, or that their managers are for not taking into account the potential existence of those conditions.

do you have a working system with an extra pen drive?? you could do what i did and make a vista install usb stick..
i just recently went threw this forum and noticed that it might be possible that i mounted my cpu heatsink wrong,
now my case is comos s and did not have the socket "771" screw holes,
but the motherboard came with these rectangular shapped peaces and a black rubbery softish smaller rectangular padding that i thought was sopouse to be used to mount the heatsink, do i make a mistake in my actions? and can this cause any problems to my motherboard, everything seems to be fine right now
was it a bracket with 4 screw holes in it?? or was it the spring piece??
my water blocks use that same method if you have the bracket/rubber piece..
im using the exact same method as you are,
thank God lol,
p.s what waterblocks do you use? im planning to upgrade to liquid and a dual loop setup, but i can't find a good water block
the correct method is to use the square peice with 4 screw holes and put the correct height standoffs into it, then place the spring clip on top of that with the plastic peice between the spring clip and the motherboard.
what plastic peice are you talking about?
hmm.. im thinking of remounting it this weekend,
yay.
its a floppy peice of black plastic with two large square holes in it.
Greetings to you all! I have been reading this thread from early summer and finaly I have time to attend my self. Thanks to all of you for your magnificent insight. And thanks to s0lid his help :D.
So I started to plan my rig last spring. My goal was and still is to build a rig for HD-media, a platform that can record multiple HD-cameras (3 or 4) at the same time to the RAID array including the sounds (atleast 16 channels). In addition it should perform as all included postproduction station. Could this rig still be a bit portable ? Maybe if it stays under 40kg in weight.
I'm also going to get my self a efix chip and test if it could run Mac, Win XP, Vista and Linux. Well I don't need Linux but I just want to keep old skills alive. Have any of you tested that Efix chip?
This is what I have:
2 x 5420 xeon
1 x 8800 GTX
2 x EK-Supreme WB's
1 x EK 88GTX WB
Kandalf LCS case (I think the radiator and pump in it are not good)
2gb of Kinston FB-dimm 667 (for first test)
Asus Z7S WS
Areca RAID card
1 x 500gb WD AAKS hdd
2 x WD 1tb black caviar hdd's (getting later 8 or 10 of these)
+ the essential peripherial
And all of these parts have been lying around my house for couple of months. I have been too busy at work to start on this project. But finaly the time has come and today I will go and start working with the waterblocks to get them fit on the Z7S.
My broblem with my rig is that I don't think the coolin power of the Kandalf's radiator is enough. The tubins are mostly 3/8 but in and out from the radiator the tubings are 8mm. I was thinking to buy 12V Laing D5 Vario/Swiftech MCP655 Pump and some new reservoir, but what should I buy as for the radiator(s) so I could get them to fit in or on the case and they would have enough cooling power for the whole thing? And yes I'm going to OC it :yepp:
Edit:
It seems that Thermochill PA120.3 doesn't fit in the case front. Black Ice stealth 360 GT X-Flow would fit but is it enough? And if I fit some other (maybe 120x1 rad) in addition to the back does one MCP655 create enough flow for the system?
So when I get back home from my girlfriends parentes place  I can post you the dimenssions of the Kandalf and some pictures if you need. I would realy appreciate the help with this.
i talked to the guys at EFIx, they said they will never support ASUS, you can install a hack version, I used Ideneb 10.5.5 and it worked, but my video cards wont work in OSX(4000 series)
but if you want to take the plung and test the efix for the hell of it, be my guest, ill be the 1st in line to buy if it works.
Anyone know if OWC's RAM overclocks well?

Hi there,
don't worry, those 5420's produce hardly any heat, even if OCed. You won't get higher than ~3,2Ghz on those chips due to FSB limitation, which they will run at stock Vcore or even undervolted, so you need max. 150W for both CPUs. Throw in another 180W max for the 8800 GTX and you'll be perfectly fine with a BIC GT 360.
However, EK Supremes are truly restrictive, so you'll need a decent pump to run 2 in one loop, so getting that laing might be a good idea.
Oh yeah, try and avoid the X-Flow. The normal BIC 360 GT is better.
Hey Deagol
Welcome to XS m8 :D
Looking good this far :)
