Hmmm... I flashed to that "beta f8 final" that was early released too... Could be what's holding me back... I offically eliminated my cpu and ram as the causes to my lack in OC, I tested my PQI Turbo (Elipida chips, aka value chips) at real tight timings and they ran 3-4-3-8 @ 415mhz 2.1v... (512mb sticks...) Yea, the 'value' sticks are doing a good impersonation of top of the line D9 micron sticks.

I'm gonna d/l the new @bios and the non-beta final version of the F8 bios (the real one that's on the gb site, not the one that was posted in the thread the day they came out...)

Date on the bios bingo posted and the date on the Bios on the GB website is different. Bingo's is dated 12/20/06, GB's one is dated 12/19/06...

Hmm, did you do a md5sum on the two bioses? I find that a lot of times, the bioses will be released on the website and backdated (lol options???)

This was the case for an albatron motherboard I had a few years ago. I got an email from their tech people with a new bios. I checked the website the same day I got the email with the attachment and nothing. Then a week later, I check the website again and there's the bios I got a week in advance. The date on the website was from the same day I got the email. Tricky stuff.


Hmmm load optimize defaults. I never did that. Though I did clear the cmos pretty well, so I presume it should be similar.

update: Looks like the vcore being different with the bios update was totally placebo. I did more testing, and with the next step up in vcore, I'm seeing pretty much the same thing in cpuz, speedfan, and et5. The forced cold boot everytime is kind of annoying though. Reminds me of the p5l-mx when fsb goes above a certain point.

I just compared the two bios (the one bingo posted and the one on the GB site and they are the same bios.) There's gotta be something else that MadMikeSS did...

Wow I'm surprised I was able to squeeze in that last edit. As soon as I hit the submit button, I got a bsod I'd never seen before. PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or something like that. That was when I was at the vcore setting between 1.3625 and 1.3750 (both used to be known goods, so I tried the middle one). I also had sata native ide in legacy ide mode. So I went in the bios and changed it back to sata native ide mode but kept the vcore. Booted into windows but as soon as I logged on, it page fault in non paged area on me. So now I'm at 1.375v and sata legacy ide mode. Something seems weird with that middle vcore setting it seems. Not sure how stable it is currently at a known known known good of 1.375v though. I wanted to squeeze in this post before I started stressing again.

edit: hmm looks like vcore is a little different. Back with F7, if I set to 1.375v in the bios, it'd idle at 1.328 and load at 1.296-1.312 with most of the time having it sit at 1.296. Now it's more or less identical, except it's showing that it's sitting at 1.312 almost all the time with only the occasional dip to 1.296. No difference, as long as I can overnight this thing again.

Well Ive later started having issues and the OC was lost on a reboot a few hours later. So I guess the cold boot issue isnt really resolved.

I did nothing else but reflash the bios back to F8, shut down and reset the cmos via jumper, same as I did when I tried the final F8 that bingo posted. For some reason had nothing but trouble with it. Same settings as I'm using right now I couldn't even post 490x7. I had a hard time just booting 480x7. I had to increase vcore to do so. Now I'm getting the same overclock as with the S3 bios. Like I said, I did nothing different than when I flashed F8 the first time.

Yeah, I did look and see that. I posted here before I did anything else though just to keep everyone updated on changes I had when going to F8 from F7.

Could "memory" error possibly be related to L1/L2 cache? The reason I ask is because I bumped up vcore to 1.375v and now it's going stable for 1:42 in orthos so far with no further errors as I had at the lower vcore setting, where I got PFN_LIST_CORRUPT and PAGE FAULT NON PAGED twice in a row (which I see other people having too so ??).

I've tested this ram over 23 hours in orthos at 500mhz 4-4-4-12 without issue, and unless some of the subtiming settings have been changed with f8 over f7 (I didn't touch any of them), I can't see why memory is now suspect (except of course p965 issue)

I believe you man, trust me, this board has done some crazy stuff on me too. I didn't do a perfect comparison of the bios, but they were both written at 6:37 p.m on 12/20/06 from what I see (unless I'm making a mistake and actually looking at the exact same bios lol.)

Thats awesome that you've hit such a high fsb on that exact same board as I have (S3, C1.)

You know what, is the usb issue fixed? I'm still using a USB keyboard and mouse (still haven't got around to getting the ps/2 adapters.) I'm hoping this is the issue, as I always spend hours and hours to solve the easiest problems that I completely look by, but I spend shorter time on more complicated problems! :rolleyes:

Which usb issue are you referring to? I have never had an issue with any usb devices with this board yet. I have a G15 keyboard and G7 mouse and a host of other usb devices and all of them work flawlessly, always have. Just curious what issue you are referring to that's all.

I've been having the same problems since I moved from f8i to f8 final.

What's been happening is - the cpu is pretty bad already, or something but the board/cpu seem to be allergic to voltage now. I can run the memory at 800mhz cas 4 like usual if I don't touch the cpu voltage but if I put it up to ~1.55 (terrible I know, this chip is...) then memtest goes crazy or interrupt errors happen.
I've been having memory errors and orthos failing/rebooting all day, partly due to the cpu I know but the problems got weirder since I changed to F8 final, I guess I should go back to f8i and see if anything improves, at this point I'm ready to dump the whole pc.

That sounds like a case of where the cpu max overclock is starting to decrease because of too much voltage. The only test I can think of to see if this is true is to find your max overclock on stock voltage, then bump up the voltage to 1.5V or greater and run it for a bit at that speed for awhile. Then stability test it again. It will probably fail the stability test after a few days. You probably want to not do this for a very long term, because afterwards, the max overclock seems to drop like a rock until even underclocking won't make it stable.

Easy tune 5 what comes bundled is also a week point.Games stuttered a lot when this worked.When by some reason you have to make reset to your system easy tune makes things worse and you have to make bios reset.Its linked to bios and somehow messes things up.Used it to monitor my temps and volts.Uninstall it.

All of cpu pwer options, EIST C1E etc. are enable, for me.
My experience is that with 4 sticks of ram, no way possible cas4 settings.
I had 2 1Gb kits of Corsair XMS2 800mhz memory, each set did 4-4-3-6@840mhz, but if I had all 4 sticks together cas 5 needed at 800 and above.

Funny thing being that 2 sticks scaled to ~920 5-5-5-15, four sticks to ~1000 5-5-5-15

I saw your post I should say that I was on DS4 F6 with no problem, I load optimized defaults and flash to DS4 F7b, after successful flash with @BIOS 2 I restart system from xp and xp become shutdown successful and monitor become off but monitor stay off!! and system is on but no boot! then I have to press reset key on case and it become turn on, I flash back to F5 or even F4 or even F7e but problem not solved!! what I should do?

But you shoud check subtimeings of memory settings, they sometime take big influence on overclock... maybe you have screenshots of those settings with 4Gb memory?

It's a bad cpu I know but what I find strange is that I put the voltage up and left the cpu at stock speed - I've got a tuniq tower cooling it - then tried memtesting with 1.55 (up from stock voltage of 1.325) and the memory at 800mhz c4 and it'll break down quickly, 90% of the time windows blames the memory

No havent got any, and it was 2Gb total, two 1Gb kits, total of four 512Mb sticks

Got to say the forced cold-booting is pretty annoying. However, my overclocks have been sticking for the most part. On a few occasions, boot up would lead to no screen with F8 and I'd hit reset button and it'd come on with stock speed.

Also, with F8, I try to hit 450fsb but require +0.1v mch. Maybe once I get heatsink for it, it'll be better again. I know with F7 I didn't raise mch and it went up there. Then again, CPU set to 1.55v in bios and even then it's not stable at 3.6ghz. Fails small fft within 10 seconds usually. Temps into 70's with ac freezer7. Hopefully, I'll push 1.60v bios under water and get 3.6 stable. Pipe dream? I really hope not.

edit: I just noticed my ds3 squeals under orthos load just like my asus p5l-mx did. Stop orthos and it goes away. Don't think it's really affecting stability though. Just caps nowadays I guess..

And just for fun I did some testing. 8x400 4:5 vs 7x460 1:1 and of course 7x460 was slower. Too bad I can't get 6x533 to work. NBCC just too harsh up there

Well, here's one thing I think that's happening with my overclock ... (which actually WORKS now) ... apparently, i think the voltages don't jump as much, which is why my orthos has been stable all this time ... i approve of this F8 BIOS ... only if you have a crappy week.

why u said F8 is good for crappy weeks cpu? cause mine is the crappies E6600 i ever seen , cant pass 3.3 , tryed 2 diferent boards allready, i still have my DS3 and im thinking seriously of going back to it , not very happy with this 680I , i was more stable with my DS3

What do you think the probability is that Gigabeyte will let us RMA under warranty because of this resistor issue (limiting overclocks of D9 RAM)?

However isn't that "resistor problem" a defect in the motherboard. It would seem they would have to honor a repair? (Okay maybe this is wishful thinking:rolleyes: )

Umm...I'm running 4x1GB 4-4-4, no problemo.

DS3 Rev.2 stock F7 bios.

I must say this board is extremely stable, no cold boot issues, and fantastic rails compared to my DS3 Rev.1 C2.

However...it is RIDICULOUSLY slow compared to my first board. I don't know if it's a driver issue due to the fact that I didn't reinstall XP when I switched boards, but I getting 19.X seconds in SuperPI 1MB at 3.44Ghz(8x430), memory 1:1 5-4-4 :stick:

Where did you buy that? Does the rev 2 C2 have the same "resistor problem" that impedes D9 OC's with the board?

My revision 2.0 of the DQ6 gets shipped by UPS tomorrow, they didn't ship it on the 23rd as promised, so i should have it January 2nd. I'll go over the mobo with fine tooth comb and see what is different from ver. 1.0 - 2.0.

As said before, ds3p is a completely different board, with a completely different pricing scheme, look at newegg its like 60 bux more or something like that. thats like returning your oddyssey to honda under lemon laws and try to get them to give you the s2000 back.

Ive got:
c2 rev2.0 ds3 on f7 bios +1mch,+1fsb
e6400 now thats @3.3ghz (418mhz fsb) and 1.45v rock stable, all power options enabled.
ocz platinum rev 2 2x1gb 800mhz ram @1:1 836mhz 4-4-4-14

Im thinking reading this far that Ill try the f8 final bios soon and see what I can get out of it if anything at all. seem to have hit a wall @ 418 which is ragged edge. 1-2mhz above that and I start failing orthos on stock f7.

2 days ago @bios 1.10G was available on the asia and europe server, the file is an self-extract (rar) executable.

I had to uninstall the 1.01D, modify didn't nothing. B06.0721.01 was still appearing in the add/remove programs list, and in the about it was still the 1.10D.

Now I have B06.1124.1 in the add/remove programs list and 1.10G in the about.

By now, at a high-volume e-tailer, any DS3 you buy should be a Rev.2.

My Rev.1 could also do Cas 4 with 4GB, and even 500MHz using a divider, but not 1:1. I'm using D9 'Fatbody' by the way.


No clue if the resistor problem has been fixed, but I can say that nearly every resistor, capacitator, and ferrite coil is a different type and location than my Rev.1 C2 board.

No cold boot issues here on a Rev.1 C1 DS3. I used to have that problem with the F3 bios or so, but since then it's been resolved. F8 clocks better than F7 too! I can hit 490 x 7 on my e6600, whereas I'm limited to the 450 range with F7. Ram holding me back!

Yea, it's better but the start up issue with holding an OC is still there. It took about 10 boot ups to rear it's ugly head - but it was one time too many at this point!!

Were you able to exchange boards? Or did you just sell and buy the rev 2 later?


Hmmmm.....I will have to see how these Rev 2 boards do. I may call Gigabyte also to confirm if this Rev has the faulty Resistor. I may also just wait and see how the DS3 does with an E4300.


To TastyRatz, Yeah I notcied the DS3P essentially looks like a DQ-6 without the extra cooling bits.

Hi all, first post by a noob to this board. :toast:

I just upgraded my system with the DS3 Rev.1 C1 version mobo and thought I was updating to the F8 but got the F7 using the wacky Gigabyte software. :shrug: Board came with F3.

With my E6400 I am able to run 400x8 stable as far as I can tell using 1.35v on the cpu... haven't tried higher or lower voltages yet although I hope lower volts work because it idles a bit warmer than I would like although it's definitely within spec. This is with Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 RAM at 5-5-5-12 running at it's rated speed. It was a very easy and painless overclock.

My biggest issue is needing to do a clean install of windows and get an SATA HD. I did a repair XP install on my IDE drive and finally beat windows into submission :slapass: but it's definitely slowing me down until I clean off a drive and do a proper full install. I figure I might as well get an SATA HD before I mess with re-installing everything although I am cheap and will probably just format an IDE HD and then do the clean install.

Looking at responses in this thread and my initial good luck with my board is telling me that I should probably stick with the F7 for now. Why fix what ain't broke? :up:

don't know if my week is good or not, but i know the F8 IS NOT!! just endless reboots until i went back to F7. absolutely terrible build for waiting this long. hope it wooks great on the rev. 2, since we seem to be left behind!!.... i did run F8i for a while and it seemed ok, don't know what happened tween 8i and final that F'd it up so much...

Actually running Orthos Blend right now in the background at 400x8 with my E6400 and stock voltage.

Decided to try and make the night with this running so I could post in the Conroe O/C thread. Shouldn't be a problem as both cores are around 56c under load. :cool:

Considering how awesome this board has been for me I'm not sure if I would swap it for a Rev2 or not. Hard to argue with what works really good! :banana:

First post, but I've been watching this thread for a while. I have an S3 C1 and a 6300 with 2x512mb gskill hz's. With my first cpu I was unable to go any higher than 404FSB. I got a new cpu and have maxxed out the fsb to 533:D . I have not been able to stress test since I have stock cooling. The highest I've stressed it with dual prime is 475x6 2850mhz. So far rock stable. I bought two more s3's and they both were the worst boards I've ever worked with, constant bsod's and never even got windows installed before I had to ship them back for p5b-e's. I love mine, but won't be buying gigabyte in the future. btw I'm usung f8i and it's great. No jmicron issues no x-fi issues, overall I'm very happy.

The reason I'm posting is I can't seem to get my memory to run at 1000mhz 4-4-4-12 even at 2.3v. Can anybody help me with these extra memory timing options? I'm coming from an athlonxp 3000+ nforce2 ddr 3200 mem system so I'm clueless wwhen it comes to ddr2.

Nope, I have a C2 and mine loses the OC occaisionally on a cold boot. It will run my 6300 @ 515 x7 but so does my P5B-E (without the loss of my OC on a cold start).

That's the same problem I'm having! Even at low cpu multi I can't get it stable above 316MHz FSB...

Getting my video card back tomorrow and I'll try reseating the CPU and NB coolers to see if the problem is with the cooling...

Thats an issue with the CPU. Some CPUs have a FSB limit, sounds like yours is 316 Mhz. Ouch.

You sound so sure about it, I'm on the other hand is quite sure that's not a CPU issue. If it were 516MHz I could agree. If it were 416MHz that would make it a crappy "FSB CPU". But a FSB limit at 316MHz?!!! :D

Have You tried any FSB at 350-400? Sometimes higher FSB can be more stable. And yeah, take a look under that NB cooler!

I've got an E6600 L628A too and the FSB limit is at ~500 FSB.
( but that could also be a mobo limitation )

Start with the FSB 400MHz or higher

For those of you having FSB walls below 400, make sure you increasing your voltages, using the 1:1 divider, running loose timings ect ;)

Could the cold boot issues have anything to do with the +5VSB? I know there's a boot problem on some DFI lan party boards where they require 3A on the +5VSB... I know your psu has 2.5A on the +5VSB dnott...

Well, I've had the mem running happily at 930 in async mode so the mem doesn't seem to be the problem...
Also tried setting FSB to 400 or higher but then it just instantly locks up... (using setFSB)
Of course using 1:1 ratio and trying all sorts of voltages...
But I'll start with the coolers! Let you know how it went tomorrow night! ;)

Well I can get it to about FSB 360-370 24/7 stable. Thats it though... and thats pretty much same on s3 and ds3 give or take.

seems to be something that started with f8 bioses. my buddy with an s3 and f8 has the same problem

i know this isn't earth shattering or anything, but reached a personal goal FINALLY so thought i'd share. hit 3.6 on air with a zalman 9500 and fan between memory and cpu. superglued the f... out of it. don't see any tracers in that area so figured why not?!! volts are at 1.55 though, but idle temps in the bios are at 30-32 C. i'm using windows vista x64 so no cpuz or core temp or anything, hope they release version to work on this os soon. here are a few screenies for proof though if i can figure out how to post them....

1 more screenie. haven't updated my sig yet cause it hasn't run long enough to consider stable. so far about 1 hour. sucks not having any benchmark programs, though haven't really looked outside cpuz and coretemp...

WTF?? it's like when it reaches its upper limits it won't hold. 2 theories, 1 is that since the cpu fan doesn't start right away the volt jolt heats it up and it goes into reboot to protect the cpu,
2 is that the solid capasitors have to warm up to run that amount of heat/voltage through them which is why the S3 or other brands don't have that issue. i'm running f8 final, but have seen the cold boot on other bios-i. could still just be crappie bios and gbyte needs to get their head out of their collective aarrrrssss...

Well the boot issue seems to have been fixed at first glance. I can boot at 450x8 again with f9, unlike f8.

I'll give it a few hours and see if it's still fine.

It took 2.5 months to get F8 (and how many betas), and it takes 8 days to get F9 and I don't think anyone saw a beta. I wish you guys luck. I'm not gonna flash it on my new board till it has been out about a month.

Can't say I'm thrilled with F9. I used my tried and true 8x400 1.375v +0.4v vdimm 4:5 4-4-4-12 110pcie. It kept bsoding into windows. I tried various things. What seemed to do the trick was 1:1 for ram instead of 4:5. Did I inherit d9 issues with this flash :p

F9 works great for me. Wake from hibernation (S3) is back. :D

I'm stress testing my 24h/24h OC now : 3400 mHz ; vCore 1.5v ; +0.1 vDimm

It seems a keeper so far. :banana:

blurp, you running 1:1 ram? I'm guessing so if you're only using +0.1v. I look stable as before as a hunch with 1:1. Decided to give 4:5 another shot and blam. BSOD on loading windows.

its been known for awhile to use 1:1 as its easier for the chipset.

Yeah I know, but still, it's been fine before. Also, I understand that 4:5 is on the same strap as 1:1 so it's not as bad as something like 1:2 where it drops it into an even lower strap. I guess I'll try 460*7 again and see if ram will run 460

No, but they're comin during the spring or something... It's the same thing with pretty much every new upcoming CPU, BIOS supporting the new chips are always out at least a month prior to the release of the new CPU. :)

Not to argue or anything, but the only new cpu coming in the next month is the E4300 (FSB 800). And I don't see anything in their announcements going up through june that has a 333 fsb, Not even the quad core extreme as a 333 fsb. Can anyone else shed any light on this?

Looks like I'm still stable at 7x460 and 1:1. Surprised the much higher nbcc isn't taking it's tolls and I'm able to get it stable with +0.1v mch. At 8x400 and 4:5, it's not stable with any amount of mch. Both used to be stable with normal mch voltage. Looks like if I use setfsb to raise fsb to 463 orthos starts failing. Kind of weird. I've never used setfsb to really overclock before but I did previously 24 hour prime test at 466. I went back to 460 as a buffer since when I used setfsb to crank up to 470, it failed orthos.

Ziddy - I take mine board to 515 and dont even touch the mch or fsb voltages. Just vdimm +.3 and CPU 1.425v. Are you sure you really need more mch at those speeds? I've heard it just causes instability.

Yeah, that's what I read from here too so I tried to avoid mch bumping at all. I used to run 8x400 and 7x460 both with stock mch volts. But 460 seemed unstable still so I figured I'd throw +0.1v everywhere. Not completely sure what fsb termination is still. I figure +0.1v pcie is good since I'm running 110. Ehh

going to f9 tonight as i run 1:1 which looks good so far from what i read. i also found in my 6 hours of stepping up volts/fsb speed last night that adding +.1 on pcie and +.2 on mch/fsb increased stability in my superpi runs, which thankfully run on vista. above 440 i couln't get a stable superpi with only +.1 on mch and fsb

DS3 and DQ6 are at F8 and still nothing for DS4, which is still at F6. Well I am beginning to get pissed off...

Burn What? don't use Vista tests for CPU speeds. They are WAY off. I have the same CPU score as you at 2.8ghz.

Anyone report back on the failed cold starts with F9 yet?

I am tired of switching boards and reformatting everytime a new BIOS pops up to find out the cold boot issue still isnt fixed.

Any other great differences with F9? I'm guessing no.
