Hi, would like some advice, if anyone has experienced this issue?
My system specs are as below...
Cpu: e6300
Coolin: Thermalright Ultra 120
Board: Anus P5B Deluxe wi-fi AP bios 1004 (but I have experienced them all and no cure)
Memory: single 1Gb ocz gold xtc pc2 8800 - 1100mhz / 2.4vdimm / 5-6-6-15 (rated default)
GPU: x1900xt 256 Mb
PSU: Hyper Type r Modular 580w
HDD: Raptor Series 1 74Gb sata
Ive done all the usual disabling in bios and also the vcore pencil mod, which I really recommend... voltage selected in bios matches that in windows and when cores are stressed vcore actually rises slightly instead of drooping a lot.
Anyway, I can run at 3.4Ghz with 'actual' vcore of 1.36v, however I dont like the fact that I hit 60oC when stressing with TAT (Intel Thermal Analysis Tool).
So I thought, I'll use this long legged memory @ 3.2Ghz Cpu, and push the memory out using 'dram freq' set to 4:5... only to find its rubbish!!!
...I cannot boot over 420 fsb (1050mhz on memory), not even to the bios, regardless of timings, voltages, bios vers. etc etc... and yet on the next 'dram freq' it'll do 2.7Ghz CPU / ddr2 1152 mhz @ 5-5-5-15 / 2.4vdimm?
I really dont get it?
How can this be possible?
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/OCZ/PC2-8800Gold/3
...could it be less stable owing to me only having a single stick? and hence single channel mode?
its really, really annoying because, I dont want to buy another stick of this stuff... if its a bit, erm, crappy
Any ideas peeps? I'd be sooooo greatful
I am running 80C under full load. I do have my system OS (Vista) SpeedStep Enabled. But I looped PCMARK05 and GO Orthos. for many hours without a crash. I keep an extra CPU on hand. I have a Asus VR Guard CPU Cooler. I don't think they are very good. Just running TAT my temps are in the high 60s
single stick would probably be more stable. it sounds like you're having issues with the 4:5 divider after certain fsb's. If you were able to hit 1152 in next dram freq, then you know the ram can do it. It's a motherboard limitation.Quote:

What I'd do is drop the multiplier to 7x and run 466fsb. It still won't net you the 1100mhz you're looking for, but it'd be probably faster in pretty much every regard.
I suppose if you could somehow manage to pull 6x533 out of the board (really tough!!!), running 1:1 there would net you 1067 which is right around the 1100 you're eyeing.
My board does double restarts right out of the box no big problem though
Does everything look normal? http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...f?t=1172544828
I should have posted this one. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...f?t=1172545123
looks fine to me. is there a newer bios than that? also, it looks like you've got that peg booster turned on or whatever that's called. looks to be overclocking the 7900gs. that said, you can do a hell of a lot more of the 7900gs :)
edit: also, do you really need that high of a vcore to run your e66 at 3.2?
Have you tested it with ORTHOS ?Quote:

Yes I tested it with Orthos, but I only let it run for about an hour and everything passed. I probally should lower my vcore down a notch. Thank goodness that it is stable now. I had alot of problems in the past trying to overclock this board, but just like everyone said, you have to start small and stable and then do little tweaks here and there to see if it takes. A long process, but well worth it. Stable for 2 days and counting. :toast:
I did the pencil vdroop mod, and added a ton of fans, and a 2nd power supply (350w) and use it to power all my fans and drives, and my 8800 gts. The main 500w power supply still powers the mobo.
i loosen the timing
i bumped up all the voltage to max, and vcore to 1.55
the system was still less stable at 470 fsb (before i begun all the mod said in this post). seems rock solid at 450 however.
i notice that i always get double boot, is this due to the strap issue? I am still foggy on the whole strap thing. I also notice that during post my bios shows that my ram is pc2-4300, while i have the 6400 shown above...
bios rev 1004
board rev C1
is my cpu maxing out or the board? is there any way to monitor the NB or SB temp? I tried removing the stock cooler, but the SB seems glued on and won't move. it also seems that if i max out my NB volt (1.8), the system is more stable. what about vmch, i have not seen or mod it yet. (because my lack of understanding of it)
thanks.
Just popped in to see whats new.. been busy lately, work... :(
Anyway has onyone tried installing x64 Vista? cause i plan to try it, and wanted to know if there are any issues..and so on?
A still cant make front audio panel work... it plays in windows, but no sound comes out.. any thought on that? (i meant i see in winamp, foobar or wmp that its playing ok, but i dont hear it)
EDIT : How can I input signature in profile??
Running Vista 64bit ultimate here with 1 big headache - the sound driver.
Ive got a quad analogue speaker setup that worked 100% in xp, but in vista setting it to quadrophonic gives no rear output. To fix this you have to set vista to 5.1 then just disable the centre speaker and sub then all works ok.
Also the driver doesnt stick and I loose the front panel mic. Boot up vista, install latest beta driver on asus website and get everything working. Then when you reboot pc vista defaults back to original driver causing mic loss.
So basically I have to reinstall sound driver everytime I reboot pc and set up speakers and mic.
p.s. the only other problem is there are no drivers for my webcam, dont use it so doesnt matter..
I lowered my nb core from 1.55v to 1.45v and memory from 2.10 to 2.00v. Stable so far and both settings are no longer in the red in the bios. Still at a OC of 3.2 and I am happy with that. Also, should I be turning my pc off everynight? I was told that it can damage my hard drive and all pc's are made to remain on all the time with an ocassional restart here and there. I hate to waste electricity though.Quote:

I've tried just abotu everything suggested here and it seems like the problem comes back as soon as I overclock.
Currently I'm running my e6300 at 525x7, NB/SB Voltages are both maxed otu for stability. I'm not sure about needing to max out the SB voltage yet, but it seemed to increase stability when I was testing at 530x7.
I bought an e6600 to replace this processor, but it turns out the e6600 doesn't clock for beans. This e6300 is pretty incredible.
I'm having a problem with my front USB ports using the 5/6 and 7/8 connectors on the P5B Deluxe wifi board. When I connect any USB device into the front USB ports, I get the error that Windows XP does not recognize the device. I know power is being delivered thru the port because the light on my USB jump drive is lit. I've disabled the USB wifi port (9/10). The case I'm using is Lian Li PC-60Bplus. It has a mic jack (works fine), headphone jack (works fine), 2 usb ports and the IEEE port(haven't used it). The back USB ports work fine and detect everything. I'm also using a logitech bluetooth keyboard and mouse that uses a bluetooth hub via the back USB port.
I've tried uninstalling all the devices under the USB controllers in safe mode and have Windows XP reinstall the drivers, but that didn't work. I even reformatted my drive and did a clean Windows XP install, but still get the problem. I did install the front USB ports incorrectly the first time, but will that render the connectors useless? Everything else on the board seems to work fine. I haven't overclocked the system either. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
Anyone know of an e-tailer that is definitely selling c2 revs of this board?
You may have destroyed the two front ports. maybe RMA the board.Quote:

I have installed the motherboard, processor, cooler, graphics card, power supply and power cables to 5 Sata drives. I plan on using raid 5 and at this point I wish to ask what is the sequence of connections to the mobo. I will be using windows XP Pro for my operating system. This is my first system and want to start with the initial/basic installation & configuration and than build my knowledge for oc'ing. Many thanks in advance to Xtreme Systems for being here and all who support it.
I'm running into a strange issue with this board. It will not detect my IDE cd drives unless I open and close the tray before the board finishes POSTing. It also reboots while loading Windows. When I try to load Windows in safe mode, it hangs on something like "crcdrives.sys" and then reboots. When I try to reinstall Windows, it stops at 0% and freezes.
My SATA drives aren't even recognized when I put them into the Jmicron ports. Could the drive controllers have become damaged because of my high PCIe frequency (125 mhz)? Should I go ahead and RMA the board, or is there a fix for this?
Why Asus Probe only 60*C (and less than CT)??? I always thought that this values from AP are not so exact - and usually lower than a real temp - and that CT shows the real temperature. However I can be wrong...Quote:

I want to tell you a story about terrible death of my P5B Deluxe that could do 565MHz FSB...
So before the death I had a little blood on subj: When I benched - tosol from my chiller appeared on mobo`s PCB: under CPU socket and first ddr2 slot but when I clean it mobo worked for a mounth untill...
... (my e6400 worked on 3GHz on box prime stable) I got a BSOD entering some 3Dprogramm. I desided to set CPU to 2.8GHz - so I entered BIOS and set it. When I restarted it - I see in windows 2807 MHz (not 2800 as I want)... Then I saw a lot of errows in S&M. Restarted it one more time to set real 2.8GHz (-1MHz FSB) - But I got 2793MHz. Saved it. Restarted mobo and... ...no image on display. After some reloads I changed my x1950xt for some PCI Trident videocard. It helped. I saw restoring bios page. For a three days I tried to restore it from different 1`44Mb disks, Asus`s CD, different flash drives... But I didn`t help. Then I sent it to shop and they didn`t repeard it. Now I`m waiting for Commando :)
PS: Ssory for my english :(

Well, I finally fixed my 1x link bug. I increased the PCIe clock to 105, and irregardless of what north bridge voltage I use, to 1x link.
:woot:
So, a little background first:
I built a new rig a little less than a month ago, and I had some problems with it, including having to RMA my video card. After some help from some folks around here, I got it 24hrs Orthos stable @ 7*450.
P5B Deluxe w/e6600, cooled w/Tuniq Tower
Radeon X1950 PRO (Waiting on X1950XT replacement to arrive from NewEgg)
Seagate 320, Raptor 150
SB XtremeGamer
Abit Wifi Card
Antec 900
With the way the 900's side fan mount is situated, combined with the size of the Tuniq, I couldn't get a stock Yate Loon 120 on there, so I cut part of the fan's housing away, and finally got it installed. I couldn't figure a decent way to measure it before cutting, so I was cutting a piece away, and then trying to fit the side panel back on. I didn't realize it until the 3rd or 4th time I did it, but when I was pushing the side panel into place, part of the fan was pushing on the top of the Tuniq, torquing it a bit to one side. Once I got the fan where I wanted it, and it wasn't applying any pressure to the cooler, I attempted to boot up.
Keep in mind, this machine was stable, and the only thing I changed was the side mounted fan.
When I booted up, the system got all the way to the end of the Windows XP startup screen, blanked out and rebooted. After trying safe mode and Last Known Good Config, I went into the bios and backed everything back down to stock, and tried again. Same problem. Okay, I figured I'd screwed up the contact between the heatsink and the cooler, or something, so I pulled the heatsink, cleaned it and the processor, reseated it, applied Arctic Silver 5 again, and started the process over.
The system said something about a new processor, so I hit F1 and told it to use stock settings. Rebooted, and it did the exact same thing. Alright, something's really wrong. I pulled my sound card and my wifi card out, and tried again. No dice. So, I grabbed a bootable WinXP install CD, tossed it in the drive, fixed my Boot settings and booted from the CD. XP Setup came up, and I decided I was gonna install Windows onto a different partition... but there was an issue.
My Raptor's partitions are broken up as follows:
- 20GB WinXP
- 25GB Vista
- 100GB Stuff
Windows Setup was only seeing the 20GB WinXP partition as a 15GB partition, and corrupted, at that. I know for a fact that the partition had about 5GB of data on it, so that helps account for the 15GB, but what the hell is going on there?
I tried to install XP onto my Vista partition, but setup told me it couldn't install with the WinXP(C) partition in the state it was in.
Summary
- Rig @ stock reboots right before Windows finishes starting up
- WinXP Setup thinks one of my partitions is all screwed up
I'm happy to provide answers to any questions that might help solve this problem. This is the first rig I've built in like 4 years, and the first time I've ever overclocked. I'm worried that I've screwed somethin' up. Is my Raptor suddenly bad? Is my processor fried? Or is it something simple that I'm just not seeing?
I'm double-posting this here and in a new thread in Intel Support. Thanks for any help, folks... I'm sorta freakin' out.  :( :(
Can't you delete all the partitions and start over. Format that disk and load your OS.
Sure, I could do that... but there's absolutely no guarantee that that'll help anything, because I don't know what the cause of the problem is. That sounds like treating a symptom without knowing its cause... or am I off base?
Return to stock, install windows. Then try to get your overclock sorted.Quote:

While it might of read 2807 or 2793, setting exact speed isn't always the case and it can sometimes end up higher or lower depending on the sweet spot for the memory controller. Sucks it died thoughQuote:

I ain't got a clue what your on about.
Does this board always undervolt by 0.05v from bios to windows?
Are there any secrets to squeezing a few more MHz of FSB out of this board?
I've topped mine out at around 525x7. I can still make it into windows at 532x7, but I get a hard lock very quickly. BTW, I doubt I've hit the FSB wall of the e6300. I'm running at 1.50V to get 3675MHz.
I'd really like to get 529x7 as my everyday clock, but its not going to happen unless I can figure out how to increase the stability of the board. I think I may try improving the NB cooling and add some mosfet sinks to see if that helps things.
You know how many conroe CPUs do over 3.6Ghz especially 1.50v? Extremely very very few, I have to say less than 1%.Quote:

Is there anything else I should try, maybe something with this board, or just something I might be forgetting before I contact Asus for RMA ???? Maybe this isn't a MB problem ? I'll try some different ram, but I am kinda thinking its the Mb.
Thanks, Also if anyone has a recommendation for an Intel ICH8R or higher board (not sure what the hot board is right now) I would consider switching to,

I am not really interested in overclocking this system, more interested in making it completely silent. Anyway, it's been running at stock speeds with stock cooler and 120mm exhaust in a P150 since I got it 4 months or so ago, almost perfectly stable after I got some issues with the RAM sorted.
Anyway, I ordered a Ninja in hopes of going passive, and just today decided to get speedfan, TAT, Orthos, etc going to get some notes on temperatures so I could compare after I install the Ninja.
Imagine my surprise when I see what is being reported:
Idle (with CPU fan at 100%):
Core 0 -60C
Core 1 -60C
CPU -92C (socket temp?)
MB -44C
Stressed
Core 0 -76C
Core 1 -76C
CPU -102C
MB -46C
What the hell? Does this board have notorious problems with temperature reporting? 102 degrees? I find it hard to believe I have been able to play games 3 hours straight with my computer running at 102 degrees at some part.
Any ideas what is going on?
ignore the CPU temp from SpeedFan. the core temps from TAT are what you need to be looking at. if they are that high, then you mounted your heatsink incorrectly.
I thought your CPU would shut down on a temp like 102 degrees
Took apart the stock HSF, there was a solid amount of dust impeding airflow, got rid of that. I'm quite positive the HS is clamped correctly: place over holes, 1 snap 2 snap 3 snap 4 snap. Nice and secure.
Now,
Idle is:
CPU: 44
Core 0: 44
Core 1: 44
Load is:
CPU: 68
Core 0: 69
Core 1: 72
Still really hot, I could perhaps shave off 5 degrees by using some proper thermal goop instead of the intel stuff that has been on there forever, but even then, it's still smokin :(
Does anyone have a problem when booting from a SATA DVD-RW drive with bios 1004 ?
I have a Plextor 716SA and the P5B Deluxe w/1004 BIOS. Last nigth I tried to boot from my XP CD for a clean format/install and no matter what I put on boot order in BIOS it doesn't boot at all !!
This CD was bootable with 0804/09xx bios and the same DVD-RW. My system is the same since last XP install.
Any idea what's going on ?
I've had problems with SATA ODD's till I changed the SATA cables itself. Spend several weeks looking for a solution. Changing the SATA cables made it work. I did have the problem with different BIOS revisions so might be another problem you have. I'm still at the 09xx BIOS.Quote:

I think alot of these P5B problems can be attributed to RAM compatability.
IF you have high end micron RAM (TeamX or G.Skill etc) you might need more volts than the defualt 1.8 the board supplies..
If P5B #3 has the same problems, I'm considering VDIMM mod to bring the default to 2.0V or 2.2V

I've had this on-going problem with my system where I get stuttering and reduced overall performance in games. I've swapped out my videocard, soundcard, heatsink, RAM, tried various BIOS settings and also reformatted a few times. Nothing has helped whatsoever. I just can't work it out.
My CPU cores also idle at 48 degrees with the stock cooler. Under load with Prime95 they get to about 67 which is fairly high. I've also tried a Ninja+ cooler on it and didn't get much better results. I am quite certain it's mounted correctly.

I need to understand what some of the bios options are? and what they do? reading the manual is useless.
I have no idea what those many DRAM settings are in the bios, I just know what the first 4 do, and I matched them up with my RAM timings.
I am trying to use CPU-Z v1.39, and it reads my CPU at 1.6GHZ, then I used the AI Suite and it reads them more accurately. Which program should I use?
I also noticed that my CPU jumps up and down depending on the load it needs.... I believe there is a setting to disable this so it always runs at stock high. Is it " Inter SpeedStep" or is it "Speed Spectrum" I disabled both and the cpu-z still reads at 1.6ghz. 266fsb, is there something wrong with this version of cpu-z?
I must also note that I have not done any windows updates yet, I installed Windows XP Home SP2, waiting to do updates until I understand all this.
So someone please who has the same rig as me, send me some screenshots of the bios settings, and please explain to me how I can run the system at stock and not have it jump all over the place.
My Ram Ration in cpu-z reads 2:3, I want to change this to 1:1 I believe
Thanks
Jmicron question,
If I disable jmicron in the bios, my optical drives do not show up once my system boots, if I enable it, they show fine. Does this mean I should install the new jmicron driver? I don't plan on using RAID....
I heard also that the only way to get rid of the annoying "optical drive" message upon boot, "press any key to continue" is to disable the jmicron setting in the bios...
What to do?
Pepi - yeah it's Intel SpeedStep. When voltage is set to auto it will reduce the voltage AND lower the multiplier when the processor has no load to save electricity. It's fine, you can leave it enabled, it's supposed to do that. When voltage is not on auto, it doesn't really save you any electricity since constant voltage is always being applied but the multiplier still changes.
Not sure what CPUz and AISuite would give different values. Probably because of SpeedStep. AISuite does refresh faster...
If you want IDE support, you must use the Jmicron. Don't install the Jmicron drivers. You have to live with the pause, it only lasts like 2 seconds...
Read the guide to Intel overclocking in this forum to get started...And the p5b bios setting thread.
Easy 3.2 overclock with the 904 bios -
set RAM To 1:1 ratio (first option in RAM speed settings), change voltage to 1.375 (maybe high but with this BIOS I need that extra .5) and set FSB to 401. Change all chipset (ICh7r, etc) voltages to the first setting (don't leave them on auto), which is the default, and lowest setting. You shouldn't need to change the RAM voltage for that OC.
Good idea. Arctic Silver's website will have pretty good instructions for what to do. A little bit is better than a lot. :D
Lol, I feel the same way. I've never had good times w/ Asus boards tho. A7N8X, P5P800, and now this one. :( There really isn't a better board out for my needs at this time tho. Too bad DFI couldn't hurry up w/ their 965P offering.
Isn't it sort of rediculous that we would have to resort to this just to boot our expensive ram?

Google finds nothing, what does this mean?

Was not this Vfsb mod shown already...?
The FSB limit seems not to change though Vfsb mod was tried.
It changes in each CPU's.

Sub timing question?
does someone know of a good combination of sub timings to increase performance on the p5b deluxe??
my rams are already at 1200mhz 5-5-5-15 but my ram sub timings are stock , so if anyone know of a successful combination plz tell me :)
and what is better 400 fsb or 401 for games?
400fsb. get mbench and do quick runs with changes in memset to see what's best.
I'm using 3-9-4-10 at the moment. I've found that when I run my ram at slower speeds and using spd, it'll set 3-9-4-11, so I worked from there.
Also, trfc has a bigger influence than the others I'd believe. Since you have d9's, try for 35, 30, 25, 20. You'd probably find it stable at 25 though since you're running 1200.
That said, running a 2:3 wouldn't help that much in day to day things. If you could run 480fsb and 7x multiplier and 4:5 for ram, your cpu would be 3.36, and ram at 1200 again, but you'd make a little better use of it.
Yea the weekend! But I'm starting to feel very uncomfortable right now...

hey anybody else here running with 4GB? I can only see 3.5GB in 64-bit XP or Vista with memory remap enabled(only 3.2GB with it disabled).
can this mobo work correctly with the full 4GB showing in windows?
just noticed in fact even BIOS is only seeing 3.5GB yet CPU-Z correctly shows the 4GB. is this a known issue with p5b?
running 4gb here on vista ultimate x64 with no probs. 4gb all there and useable.
must be with these OCZs then, I take one out and 3GB shows in BIOS. put it back in and 3.5GB again. tried swapping them round, the sticks are 100% working just will not show in BIOS or windows as 4GB though fine in CPU-Z. bah!
well ive got an evga 680i coming tomorrow so im sure they will go fine in that. lots of benching to be done. :D
I have problems with Wake On LAN. In BIOS I've enabled Power On PCI and Power On PCIe, both interfaces are enabled with Boot ROM. In WinXP I've set in HW properties Wake Up Capabilities to Magic Pattern and Wake On Shutdown to On. I've checked that the computer receives magic packet (using Wireshark) but it will not wake it up.
Strange thing is that when I shutdown the computer, LEDs on switch for one interface goes both off and for the second one the 100MBps goes off but Link/Act is blinking.
Any idea what to do, or test?
Thanks.
Hi,
I can not change the Command Rate ( CR ) in bios, it is now on 2T.
Do you have the same thing? Can you modify it??
command rate is always 2T at the p5b
you cannot change it
I don't mean to spam or anything, but this is simply too huge of news and I figured I'd try to spread the word as fast as possible. I noticed something interesting yesterday. When I had misc. voltages bumped up beyond stock (vmch at 1.6v for example), I noticed that even without a fan connected to the cpu header, I'd get an rpm reading of 42. I figured this must have meant there's a lot of electrical noise in the motherboard. Also, I noticed I wasn't able to pass beyond 460fsb stably, and at 460fsb, I could use all stock voltages.
So that got me to thinking about what spread spectrum did. I've always been told to turn it off and always have. But after thinking about it, I decided to turn it on and try fsb500 with all voltages at stock. Holy mother :banana::banana::banana:ing :banana::banana::banana:. It posted. I reset it several times (at 460fsb, it'd randomly not post when I had spread spectrum disabled) and it came one each and every time. I'm running memtest #5 and it's passed 4 iterations already. This is simply unbelievable.
My p5b (vanilla mind you) which has never seen beyond 460fsb despite misc. voltage bumps is now sailing at 500fsb with stock voltages across the board.
Very impressive:clap:
yeah i was totally blown away. I can't believe I added two and two together and it worked so well. I guess the long lasting spread spectrum idea got shattered.
I did a test again with spread spectrum disabled and on save and exit, it no longer posted and I had to kill power to the psu.
