Forward: official GIGA 965P-S3/DS3/DS4/DQ6 beta BIOS

WOW THIS BOARD IS THE WORST! So I've been flashed to F8 for a day, I turned off the computer for the first time to take out 2 of my 4 sticks of ram. Took them up, plugged back in, tried booting up, and of course it cycles 4 times... I shut it off, turned back on, cylced for forever, finally stopped cycling but didn't boot. I tried again and no visual again. I cleared cmos, tried booting, all I get is cycling. On, Off, On, Off, On, Off for 10, 15, 20 minutes. Nothing. Nothing. Put the two sticks back in, cleared cmos again, same result. Cycle, Cycle, Cycle for a half hour. What the :banana::banana::banana::banana: is wrong with this board? Do I need to take the battery out as well? I've NEVER had to take out the battery on any board, a simple shorting the pins has ALWAYS worked with any board I've had. Did I :banana::banana::banana::banana: up in having it still overclocked when I removed the two memory sticks? Someone give me some help before I smash this piece of junk. I'm on my laptop right now going nuts.

^ sounds like you forgot to turn off the PSU to me... but you do say you "plugged back in" so only thing I can think is that one or some of your sticks are faulty.

What I do that always work when this situation happends: Turn OFF PSU switch for 20 sec. Hope that helps.

Definately had the PSU off and unplugged, something I never forget. Tried turning off the switch for 10 minutes still doing it. I'll go to one stick in a minute. How the heck do I remove the battery? They're stuck in there pretty well lol.

Same thing mine did on the last beta bios. If you bought if from newegg within the last year, they will automatically rma/replace it for you. You have to return the board and all accessories in the original box and when they get it, they will send out a new board in 3-4 days.

Yea I did get it from newegg, but I gave my dad the cash to get it for me and he got it with his credit card. I live a few towns over in my own condo with my gf now but I hope they don't give me crap about the address, as it was shipped to my old house. Sadly, I don't even have enough money to ship it back to them. Now it's going to be friday before Christmas so it'll be weeks before I get a replacement.

Fixed... Removed the last stick of ram from the first dram slot, put it in the 3rd one, put the 3rd one in the first, plugged back in and it fired right up... I have nothing left to say lol.

Cold boot issues so bad that I'm scared to put the other two sticks back in...

Right now I'm stable at 414mhz fsb... Ram running extremely loose... 415mhz fsb = fail super pi. Tried giving it 2.1v on the ram no good.

+.1v PCI-e
+.1v FSB
+.1v MCH
+.3v dimm

1.425v CPU

Was able to get the cpu stable on the P5W DH at the same voltage but at 450mhz FSB...

From the results I've seen not many have needed more than +.1v on the MCH or FSB to get stable 450+... Any suggestions? More cpu voltage? More ram voltage? Mch? FSB? Blow torch it? Baseball bat? Run it over?

The issue was unheard of. Needing to remove all 4 sticks of ram in order to reset something with the board is pretty lame. None of the sticks were faulty, loose or anything, the board is just picky...

IMO all that should have been said was that the new bios required you to remove/swap all your RAM sticks to make the board boot again - and the useful bit would have been the info I have not seen reported yet - IE - is the board running at the same settings it was before you updated the bios and had to swap the RAM?

i have a S3 mobo and gigabyte hasn't released a new bios since october, does anyone know of any beta bios around? or could i just flash my S3 with the DS3 bios?

You could, it works - MadMikeSS had problems with this one on the S3 though. Check a few pages back.

I have followed this thread for several months and thought I would post my finding. F5&F6 S3 bios tried, F5-F8(final) DS3 tried all cannot post beyond 450 FSB under any circumstances (see My Sig for rig details).

Why I believe this is a board limitation (D9 ram or is this really a ram issue at all!)


1. Ram Elimination…..Set CPU to 6X multiplier(to ensure CPU max is not reached), increased ram “multiplier” then increased FSB until ram hit 490 (980 effective). The FSB never exceeded 370. (up to 2.4Volt) *** Confirmed ram goes to 980 effective.

2. Then CPU elimination
Set multiplier to x6 (from x7) FSB until it would not post a between 445-455 (still). (ram at only 900 below what I tested it for)*** High probability this is not the CPU as it only was hitting 2.7gig

3 For the record played with all Voltages Ram timings, with no joy spent days ( as I enjoy it, this is not a complaint)


It has become VERY clear the 450 FSB+ issue will not be solved with a bios, and here is why.


1. People with the C1 chipset usually cannot go over 450FSB while those with C2 usually can (why update the chipset if C1 was ok)

2 They have been trying for months to fix this, if they can’t by now they never will.


I can reach 3.0Gig with this e6300 100% stable on this board which is not bad at all for the "price" of the board. I would like more but I think people are over reacting here, Overclocking has never been nor will EVER be guaranteed and many other boards are doing a lot worse!

i've got my patriot 800 up just over 1000 using divider on the f8i bios. my limit is cpu at 3.6. no water, just air so can boot but unstable at 3.6. if only i had some H2O!!!! patriot is micron D9 i do believe so your theory may hold...interesting that with winXP my mem timings ran solid all day long, now just upgraded to vista and had blue screen! had to knock back timings to 5-5-5-12 and now stable all day. vista x64 must handle memory different. guess that makes sense......more interesting vista stuff, my memory "score" in vista was 5.4 with the 4-4-4-10 timings, after relaxing to the 5's is now at 5.8. Not sure what the "score" is or relative to, but very curious to go up with looser timings....i think i'm out of interesting-ness.....

The only other possibility is that the Gigabyte engineers just dont know what they are doing with the BIOS. Asus P5B C1s can do 500+, as Im sure are some of the other 965s. I have a DS3 C2 that does up to 516 Mhz orthos stable however my beef was that the board on a cold boot would not come up overclocked and a series of reboots to get it to save and back into windows xp would occur (even though I was prime stable for over 16 hours for two runs).

I have seen your post, I am reporting only on the 450FSB issue.

There is more to a board than the Bios and Chipset. I am now 100% convinced the 450FSB c1 issue cannot be solved via a bios.

what's the c1 and c2? is that intel's mobo chips?

If I'm not reading this situation improperly, what you're saying is for people to state in their sigs c1 or c2. I was trying to state that he himself asked between the c1 and c2 being intel chipset revisions (or actually rather asking what c1 and c2 were referring to, which you answered in your following post). Then he said he still didn't follow, to which I told him to go back and look at the posts (two of them) above that. I think you somehow thought I was quoting that to attack you.

Or are you trying to say that rev2 isn't sufficient enough to state c1 vs c2 (which to my understanding, there are tons of rev1's with c2 since it was introduced somewhere around the end of summer / early fall.)

But for what it's worth, I completely agree with you that it's a board issue rather than ram. Possibly even more than just c1 vs c2 differences. I remember reading something about an additional resistor or something being added to make it more "compatible" with d9's and higher mhz scaling.

For what it's worth, I've got a very recent ds3 (rev2). Right off the bat, I brought the fsb up to 400 at 1:1 and set timings and voltage as speced (ram is 800 5-5-5-15 2.1v). Installed my os and began to experiment. Due to temp issues with the cpu that I will address soon with watercooling, I just bumped the mem divider up from 1:1 to 4:5 and got 1000. After seeing this be a success, I dropped timings to 4-4-4-12 and added an additional 0.1v (for 2.2v), I began testing. It was absolutely stable and I haven't bothered to drop the vdimm any to see if it works any lower, since I figure 2.2v is fine for everyday use, and I could just eventually scale higher to see what else it was stable with. Also, I've noticed that the vdimm set in bios is actually about 0.1v lower than what is actually set. This is seen both with speedfan as well as with dmm measurements, at least on my board.

I have to disagree with you there. I have the S3 and my chipset is rev C1 and I'm running 24/7 at 490x7. Ram at 980. I'm only running 2x512MB kit of ram though which if it's a D9 issue and it's related to 1GB sticks (2x1GB kits) then the point still stands about the issues. It's not the chipset revision. Also, I have been able to post and boot into windows at 515 and lower cpu multiplier.

If you look at the bottom left of a DS3, there's another revision number on it. I got a C2 board but it read revision 1 on the bottom left and I'm not sure if Gigabyte's referring to C2's as being the revision 2 or those with revision 2 printed on the actual board.

C1/C2 is the chipset revision #, look at my post above yours, the cpuz screenshot shows the revision #.

CPUZ will show the chipset revision - not PCB or board revision. The DS3P is the version 2 of the board. Here is my DS3 with chipset C2. My Asus P5B-e is C1.

Alright!! Now we're getting somewhere!!!! Recently, gigabyte announced a new revision 2 board, like t he one I have. I'm not sure intimately of what the differences are, but I can say that the rev2 has a different nic than the rev1 ( in fact rev2 is same nic as in s3 boards). At least this is what I was informed of (8056 vs 8053 I believe). I know that gigabyte used c2 revision/stepping or whatever you call it p965 chips in later rev1 models of the ds3. So it goes with reason that rev2 will have only c2 chips.

Personally, I haven't had any "d9 issues" or maybe I have but just don't know it. But like I mentioned, I'm using 2x1gb sticks of d9gmh at 4:5 multipler at 400fsb for 1000ddr2 at 4-4-4-12 and 2.2v set in bios (2.3v actual)

So it does look like it is very well cured in newer versions of ds3, as was said about a massive rma to take place soon.

I will also note that I am on f7 bios (as shipped from factory) and am hesitant to flash to f8 after seeing all the testimony (although these results sound like they're from people with earlier ds3's)

The only gripe I have about this board is the failed o/c problem and the coldboot cycles that follow with it turning on and off repeatedly every 3 seconds. For me, this is usually an infinite cycle and I'd have to cut power to the psu and then it'd fix itself.

I also run pci-e locked at 110mhz if that means anything to you guys (not saying it doesn't work at 100. just saying I stress everything more in general)

actually dnottis, I have great great great respect for you (I've spent the better part of today just reading through posts here to learn more about different products for watercooling), but I think the ds3p is a nameplay being done by gigabyte. The board itself, if you look at photos or specs, actually more closely resembles another gigabyte board (I can't remember off hand but if memory serves correct, the dq) but without the heatpipe system. I'm currently involved in a [H] thread about it

I have noticed people like yourself running 512MB sticks over 450FSB and with C1. I got a little carried away as I have tried 512MB sticks and had the same problem (maybe just my bad luck). As you stated the D9 issue is 1 gig stick related.

But I will say however C2 seems to "nearly" always go over 450FSB with 1 gig sticks so I stand by that. I personally don't believe the 450FSB D9 exists on C2 (of course cold boot is another matter).

BTW the F8 final bios introduced the cold boot issue on my S3 board as did the all the other F8's where the latest S3 bios is fine (F6).

I've just had to flash back to f7 from the new f8. f8 wouldn't hold my overclock from either a cold start or a restart. It also took 4 attempts before the in-BIOS flasher could find the f7 file on the floppy and even then it came up with a master boot record error.

I can't believe this pile of crap could be released as a final BIOS.

I just got a DS3 Rev.2, bought to replace my now dead DS3 Rev.1 C2 (~480Mhz FSB stable).

Will you keep you updated.

By the way, it's no longer called GA-965P-DS3, just 965P-DS3, if that makes a difference :p:

You guys with the 450 Mhz ceiling are running into something other than the boards. CPU or Memory maxes maybe. My DS3 is a C2 and I can hit 515, my Asus P5B-E is a C1 and does 515 as well....

now I've had 4 other C2Ds that had just miserable overclocking experiences with. One that would NOT do anything over 450 Mhz stable - it was MadMikeSS chip, we always figured it was the board but I took it and put it on my p5b and I hit the same limit. He finally changed to another 6400 and is now doing 490 on the same board.

I can confirm there is no chipset ceiling at 450 mhz with the right CPU and a c2 chipset.

This morning since it was cold(er) then it has been in awhile I decided to try and break the 500Mhz mark with my DS3/e6300 F8i FW, C1 combo. Ambient temp was about 18c. The cpu temp with TAT was showing 38/39c, it's usually closer to 43/44c. This combo will normally run at 490/3420 1:1 ratio and would crash at around 497. On a 4:5 ratio I can reach 585-590Mhz on the ram This morning I was able to get in up to 503Mhz before it froze on the 1:1 ratio. Increasing the Vcore above 1.325 volts actually makes it lock up sooner. The point of all this is I don't really think it's the mobo limiting the oc, I think it's probably the cpu's. Has someone taken a cpu known to overclock over 500Mhz on another brand mobo and not had it overclock as well on a Gigabyte using the same PSU,RAM ambient temp, etc.?

Edit: I see DNottis posted the answer to my question the same time I posted it. With his wc setup his load TAT temps are the same as my air cooled temps at idle.

OC vary great with CPU, i've seen some C2D not go beyond 400mhz OC, but on same system same stepping CPU would hit 3.5ghz easy. Just luck

I pulled this info from the Creative Forum. In the meantime I e-mailed Gigabyte to verify that this works.

If you have an X-FI card. First get it to work.

Once it works go into the device manager and find out what IRQ it is using Hopefully something under 15.

If it is you can go into the BIOS and reserve that IRQ for that PCI slot. That should stop the X-FI from disappearing.

I think the crackleing sound has something to do with either the PCI latency or the PCIe buss overclocking and taking the PCI bus with it on the ride.

Either way people whom have set thier PCIe bus to 100mhz and reserved their X-FI's IRQ seem not to have any problems with their X-FI cards.

Hopefully Gigabyte finishes thier work on the F8 Bios and we don't have to wait for F9 to get things right.

The F8 final is for the DS3 only at this stage.

The F8 works about the same for me on my DS3 Rev 1 (C2 chipset). Can do about 3.5G on all three of my CPUs (6300, 6400, 6600). Never did have the power problems as described by others. My first DS3 Rev 1 (C1 chipset) died shortly after loading F8i (wouldn't post anymore). I am leaving the 6600 installed running 360M X 9 (3.24G) at Normal 1.25V. At idle it drop to 1.17V and runs just above ambient temp.
I also bought a 965G-DS3 (by accident) when the 965P-DS3 failed. This is my backup machine w a 6400 running no OC. Can go up to about 310M or so before the SATAs start dropping out.

The magic part of your post is "C2". You are assuming a Asus C1 is built EXACTLY the same as Gigabyte C1, this assumption is probably incorrect.

From my point of view at least, I eliminated both CPU and Ram as the cause of the ceiling. As I stated before with C2 it seem almost guaranteed (not everyone, may be other factors) to go over 450FSB (Gigabyte DS3 or S3 I am talking).

Your missing the point tho... I was able to hit the exact same FSB on both a C1 and C2...so my limitation at 516 Mhz is my CPU. As most others would be running into...and yes I've seen CPUs that top at at 350 FSB and 450 FSB. So a low overclock MAY be the result of the CPU.

Did some more testing and tweaking today. Got up to 425mhz FSB (8x multi) after doing some serious memtest tweaking and testing. At 428mhz FSB I couldn't complete superpi 2m. Was using +.1v FSB, +.1v MCH, +.2v vdimm, +.1v PCI-e, CPU 1.425v, the big thing was the memset settings. I checked back to my SS's of my 15.5 sec superpi run on my P5W DH and went over the memset settings. Apparently the S3 is booting the tRRD (Act to Act) at 3 when running 5-5-5-15... Set it to 7, switched up a couple other things and gave me an extra 20mhz. Still tweaking away until I break 500mhz, but it may require some new hardware ;)

Anyone know where the chipset diode/thermostat is located? Seems like it's actually under on the northbridge rather then the southbridge, as my temps go down when I threw a fan on the NB...

Should I throw a 40mm fan on the SB? It's getting as hot as the NB without a fan...

Accept in "My" case I lowered the multiplier to (6) so my CPU was at 2.7 gig and it still froze/won't post past 450FSB (fine up to about 445)

500MHz fsb on DS3 F8i is possible. I didn't run any stress tests, I just wanted to see if it would run at 500MHz when it's cold. Second image is the memory maxed out. Obviously that was done on a hotter day which is often in Texas. ;)
I think this shows that it's most likely the CPU's that are the limiting factor.

My X-Fi is on irq 19, and I'm hitting 476 fsb, no problems with the X-Fi at all...c2 board...man is any problem consistent with this board??

Finally got my system together, 965-DQ6 (rev 2, bought from New Egg 19 days ago).
I have the FSB at 430, I have not tried really pushing past that, since 3 GHz was my original goal.

I am curious- the Easy Tune 5 software runs, but it will not save any overclock settings- I am pressing the "GO" button on it. Does this software work for anyone else? Does anyone really use it much?

et5 works for me and my ds3. it's a real pain in the ass to use though imo (well probably everyones opinion). get setfsb. works nicely. no voltage controls though which is what i find really cool about et5

All I can say is that the best BIOS for DS3/S3 mobos is F8i, its approved by me :D With F8i I can hit easily 500FSB, and it is Orthos stable over 6 hours... Just tested F8j and official F8, they are no good at all, only strange beeps when I overclock and thats all. Maybe the chipset cooling for other is needed and thats the key why they cant get it working if the limit is not the CPU and memory...

And what I have seen if there is hard to bot on XXX FSB, try it a bitlower and then go till that XXX FSB by silngle step (+1 FSB) and all will beet fine :) But now I just sold this board to new user, lets see how it goes to him and will he be able to get such high FSB or near it :toast:

Now eVGA 680i board is on the way, lets see how it can get be tweaked and is there any chance to get 500FSB Orthos stable with this board and my E6300 + Teamgroup D9GMH's :woot:

following in LeStats ways - he had more problems with the EVGA board than with the DS3. You guys that aren't happy with the DS3 / S3 should just pickup a P5b.

anyone know of a cpu thermal monitor that works on 64 bit? i fu--ed myself and installed vista x64 a bit too early as i can't find any cpu temp monitors that work on it. intel thermal monitor and coretemp are no go on x64. linux x64 or whatever the other 64 bit os's are have been out years so just thought i'd see if anyone knows of any....

You could try using SpeedFan, although due to Vista's stricter driver management you will need to press F8 whilst booting and select to use unsigned drivers.

Early days for Vista, so much doesn't work as of yet.

Make sure you download THIS F8 BIOS (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...me=GA-965P-DS3
)...and the @BIOS at gigabyte.com.tw which is 1.01D, gigabyte-usa.com has @ BIOS 1.01B. Last night I swapped the P5B-E back out for the DS3, grabbed the 1.01D @BIOS and F8 official off the website. Flashed, reset CMOS (yes, necessary) and I'm at 515 rock stable and so far no cold boot issues. MadMikeSS flashed with the beta bingo13 had and his OC was jacked up... with this BIOS off their site he can OC the same. Something is not the same between the beta F8 and this final one on their site which seems to so far work flawlessly for me. If you try this - make sure to use the right files!!

To confirm what dnottis said. I downloaded the F8 bios from the Gigabyte website and flashed again. Reset the cmos via jumper as I had done previously with the F8 bios that bingo had posted. This time my 490x7 overclock with the same volts as before with the F6 for S3 bios is working perfectly fine, no resets. So for now until I run into any problems, I'm sticking with the F8 bios. Specifically because I like the fact that now I can save my bios settings in case I decide to mess around with things and want to go back to my stable OC.

haha when I got my ds3, I never even thought to work my way up. I just set it to 400fsb and forgot about it, Ronco style.

what does @Bios do? does it flash for you? cuz i flash with floppy.

Damn I was really hoping to see results from people with ds3 rev2 before I jumped ship onto F8. But with a testimonial like that (and I think F6 for s3 is roughly the same as F7 for ds3), I really wanted to get testing myself. So I migrated my vmware servers over to my laptop (lol). Here we go... So much for 13 days uptime (1 more until activation grace period runs out!! Hope I can get something stable and see how long past the 14 days goes before I have to activate.) I remember a few years back, with one of my daily use computers, I got to half a year of uptime before I had to activate. And I lost uptime not because of a crash but due to a power failure!! Never been able to come close to that without a crash since then.

I just hit the update @bios button and it says 1.01g now. Just did the flash to f8. Time to shut down and clear cmos and see how it does. :)



Update: Alright. Flashed F8 final from giga tw. Powered off. Took out battery. Shorted that. Shorted cmos clear. Shorted battery connects again. Shorted cmos clear again. Put in battery. Booted up.

Reconfigured everything to what I had before. 8x400 1.3625v, +0.4v vdimm, 4-4-4-12 4:5 (1000mhz), everything else defaults. pcie running at 110 (out of curiosity, how many people here run 110pcie all the time?? Just want to make sure I'm not the only one).

Hit save and reboot. System goes crazy making fast paced beep beep beep beep beep and shuts down. I think oh :banana::banana::banana::banana:. Then it comes on and the power led is blinking but I got nothing on screen. I manually shut off and turn back on. It turns on, turns off, turns back on. POST shows it took my settings of 8x400. Ok.. Go in bios to check everything. Everything looks good... Having spd settings in a column next to your set settings is kind of cool. Save a profile with these settings, reboot. The thing, instead of doing a normal warm boot, forces a cold boot even though nothing was changed. Fine. Boot into windows.

First signs show that the vcore actual vs set vcore is slightly better. I used to have to set 1.375v to get 1.296 load. Now I'm setting 1.3625 and seeing 1.296-1.312 under load. It needs 1.280v to be stable at 3200, which was what needed 1.3625v in F7 to maintain.

So alright, great, right? Before I get overzealous and try to push things any, I figure I should spend a few minutes to test stability at what was a known stable setting. So I load up prime and keep it at blend for now, hoping for it to go through cycles of short and large fft's to stress everything.

What do you know!!! As I'm typing this post, it starts beeping at me. Orthos failed already?!?!?!

Good friggin grief F8.

Also, I can't remember which setting it was (don't have memtest at the moment to pull up), but spd was like 35 or something and it's being set to 0 right now. I think that's the same as in F7, but just wanted to make sure. I'm curious since all the settings were at "auto" except for that which was at 0, and there were only choices from something like 0 to 511. No auto to choose.

From the initial response to it fast beeping and shutting off, I wasn't impressed. I didn't come into F8 expecting it to be better than F7, but it certainly isn't looking good on my ds3 c2 rev2.

So there you have it. Hopefully when my water supplies get here, I'll be able to do some real testing. For now, this arctic freezer that won't even stay on the cpu properly is really pissing me off.

And to confirm with everyone running around with high fsb's, you're keeping everything at stock volts? I know if you set voltage control in bios to auto, it autoscales everything up, usually needlessly.
And can't wait to get that thermalright heatsink for the northbridge. You guys convinced me away from watercooling the nb. Hope this keeps it cool enough to see some results :)

edit: strange. It failed within a minute the first time when doing a blend test. However, I hit the resume button right away and now it's been going for 40minutes strong. Obviously, something's wrong but I'm too lazy to reboot at the moment to see if cranking up vcore would help (even though reported values are actually slightly higher than what was previously found to be stable). I did notice a horrid vdroop when I first hit orthos load and vcore shot down to 1.20v for a split second.
