Well I did something potentially foolish last night...
I should have my Thermalright bits and bobs arriving today so I thought I'd prepare the mobo a little by getting the Fusion block off. The foolish part was doing it while the PC was still on! It worked and came off pretty easily but the temp started rocketing from 40ºC right up to 85ºC+ by the time I managed to shut the thing down. Hopefully it'll switch back on OK!

I'm trying to install the matrix storage manager from windows on my X38 board and I get an error message saying my system doesn't meet the minimum requirements..
Upon further investigation, the current chipset identification utility doesn't work.
Any ideas??
Has anyone tried to use the chipset identification utility on X38??
Been having ram issues since I got the board.
It wont post with 4 sticks installed (8GB).
It will post with 1 or 2.
It will post with 3 in a specific order (of where/which ram is placed).
In some orders with 3 I will either get : DET DRAM or 3326MB ram detected.
With 4 sticks it will never post.
I've tried close to anything imaginable (voltages , timings).
Things I know :
Every stick tests fine with 2048MB single.
They test fine with 2x2GB and 3x2GB (in the "right" order).
When I get 3326MB detected (3x2GB), switching out 1 specific stick with another one (same dimm slot) will net me 6GB.
Mem : 4 sticks of OCZ2RPR800C44GK
Is it the mem or the mobo ?
I'm unsure about what I should do atm :)
If you don't mind me asking, why in God's name DID you do that haha? I've done my fair share of stupid things too, don't get me wrong. I just have to know what motivated you to remove it with the system running though :DQuote:

You have to remember that the Strap is very important once you play with FSB and dividers... Also don't forget Transaction Booster and see if you need to relax memory controller timings.Quote:

Right my mobo is lying without mossfet & NB heatsinks. The SB heatsink, once the ROG label fell off is just not budging!! How hot do I have to get it before it comes off?? Am I being impatient or what?

There you go. It's revision 1.02G. The VRM heatsink has an ASUS logo. Which is exactly the same as the one reviewed by clunk. I was under the impression that it should have R.O.G on the heatsink and a different revision i.e. 2.0x being a V2. Do you think they've sent the wrong board?
What is your Revision number and did yours have the R.O.G. heatsink on the VRM?Quote:

True, it has an eight with a plug to allow it to run as a 4 pin.
The picture of the V2 shows it as having an R.O.G heatsink on the VRMs. The board they have sent has an ASUS heatsink. And the same revision numbers as the one on clunks review.:mad:

Oh well i'm having fun with my Thermalright stuff. I managed to get the SB heatsink off now.
1. Can my 8800gts be fitted in to the lower PCI-e x16 slot or not?
2. The HR-09 mossfet coolers don't seem to fit. If I choose the short side they are too short and don't cover all the chips and the long side is well just too long! Who else has fitted these and how??
OCCT is how I got to where I am actually. The damned thing kept rebooting, even with high voltages. I ran OCCT set to CPU and it ran fine for 2 hours! So I switched it to RAM and within 40 seconds, my rig rebooted. So I reset all my voltages and started my overclock again. Using OCCT I was able to get my CPU to 4050MHz with 1.54 volts. I then set it to RAM and found that my NB voltage was too low. Bumped it up a notch at a time until it was stable. Bumped it up one more to be safe and ran OCCT set to RAM overnight while I slept (6 hours). Woke up to OCCT still running. For the hell of it I kicked off Orthos set to blend and let that run for 3 hours this morning. Ran no issues. Looped 3Dmark06 for 30 minutes, then ran 03 and 05, and finally CS:S Stress test and played for an hour. No hitches, reboots, or issues. I am calling this stable.Quote:

@ Thelawns, What version of the HR-09 did you recieve? Since the relesse of P35's, there are now "3" sizes (type 1,2,3) of same "2" types ("U" for straight up, & "S" for slant) to choose from.
Type 3 has the shortest "big side" of 58mm and "short side" of 46mm. Types 1 & 2 each have "big sides" of 84mm. Type 2 has the longest "small side of 70mm while type 1 has a 61mm "small side", and type 3 has the smallest "small side" of 46mm.
I will look into what I used but I do remember the ones I used had clrearence issues with the slide on brakets around the rear mossfets so I made my own bracket from steel BBQ barb skewer with 3mm holes or through bolts from bottom. Thet fit so much snugger then ever. I had to do it first on my old ASUS A8N-SLI cause we had only the 1 ytpe to choose (the ones from my ASUS P5WDG2-WS) and had to even trim the copper base a notch to fit my bolts in.
Hope this helps, again, I will look if you dont find the right size by then.
Also, you can still get the Intel 82801 ICH9R iostar RAID driver installed on current OS but it is trickier, and especially sine we ahve no 2nd SATA controller to use. I'll explain more if needed, here for others or in PM if you'd like.

It seems moer people are using 0802.
Any new results from 0901, im going to be using the 400 strap on the 3:4 divider.
If I must use a devider, I like the 5:6 @ 500x8, (DDR1200) but it is not that good stable on v0901 right now, but still testing throughout the day. It was cool w/ 0802, but not w/ the 7x so so. Tricky getin' it to lock in and go back to work.
You might want to try enabling AHCI in the BIOS first. Be warned though, that in doing so, you may be required to re-install your operating system.Quote:

You must enable RAID in SATA Configuratino. And yes you should have installed w/ f6 floppy from new install, but it can be fixed in existing OS, but needs some tricks. One thing I learned while installing Vista64... DO NOT INSTALL EPU DRIVERS OR THE AI SUITE from the disk that comes with the MoBo. Yes, first I ran it set to CPU to max out temps and get an idea where the CPU was stable. Then ran it on "blend" (the middle setting) to get an idea of where the NB volts should be. Finally ran it on RAM to really stress the NB<=>RAM and this yielded a reboot. This is how I knew I needed more NB volts. Ended up at 1.57 Real (1.55 BIOS). Requested BIOS settings above.Quote:

Well, that's it. I think I'm going to just take this entire worthless pile of silicon outside and smash it to :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing pieces with a hammer. I can't take this bull:banana::banana::banana::banana: anymore, it's just too much.
I have tried everything from adding extra cooling, to trying every bios known to man, to replacing the CPU, RMA'ing the board, replacing the RAM, replacing the PSU, reformatting Vista multiple times, and pumping tons of volts through everything.
I CAN NOT get this board stable, it is impossible. Last night I got OCCT to run for over 8 hours without any errors. I was so relieved, I thought that perhaps my troubles were finally over. Nope.
Now I'm getting errors in Memtest within the first pass... Everytime... Even though I'm running the memory completely at stock settings (400 mhz, 4-4-4-12). And yes, I'm giving it the full 2.2v too (it's Ballistix).
I can't take this anymore. I have spent well over $1000 trying to get my computer to work right over the last 4 months, and I thought that with this motherboard all that would end. Well, I RMA'd the first one and this is my second and everything is still :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed up. I'm completely at the end of my rope.
At this point it looks like I'll just have to abandon the entire computer and give up. There goes $2700 straight down the drain, weeee!

I get really mixed feelings, I can get the Maximus Non-SE and the SE for a good price but I want to run 4GB , I got already some nice Ballistix , but should I buy another pair or grab some G.Skill 8000 4GB kit? Is it really bad the ballistix on this board :X, I mean I can do 1200 5-5-5-12 @ 2.05v and 1175 @ 5-5-4-9 @ 2.05v.@ P5K deluxe all day stable. I know running 4GB is a different story.
this board runs Ballistix just fine... I dont know of any boards who really dislike D9, but if there are any i would stay clear. Im running 4X1Gb of the Ballistix PC8500 and am not having any problems...
my B3 doesn't like anything above 3.6Ghz. even if I try 1.65vcore I can't get 3.7Ghz stable in any combination. I can at least post at 4.0Ghz in many different combinations which is something I couldn't do on my p5k deluxe with this chip. most of the ratios seem to work with 0901 which is good. now if they'd fix the areca bios issue. Here's a vista x64 1M superpi. I wonder how a yorkfield will work ;)

I had the same prob, I thought it cuold've been alot of things, I finally decided to install one program at a time and finally got to the EPU drivers then typing on the keyboard would lock the system up tight. You're not the only 1!Quote:

Me? I have OCZ Reaper DDR2 1066. I needed some higher voltage rated RAM, so I got those as they are warrantied up to 2.35v.
Hey Tiesum, I am also in trouble over the CPUs 4 pin fan connection not adjusting the speed of the fan. I am building a watercooled system that will be used non-overclocked. I wanted this "board for the NB water cooling so I could use mnimal air flow and quiet fans. Now that I have no "auto" control over the CPU fan it's not as quiet as I would like. I had ordered a slightly faster and noisier fan for the rad so in case the CPU ever came under heavy load then it could be a "little" louder thru the Q-fan control till the load went away. I really would like to hear from others if the fan control is working or if it is only working with certian fans. And please remember this conserns the CPU 4 pin connector only. The others don't count because they will not use the cpu temp for the cpu fan speed.Quote:

To the guy running Ballistics on the P5K Deluxe. I notice this too. My PC2-8500's seam to need more vdim on tis then before on P5K Deluxe. What isthe lowest you can run them now @ 1200 on the Maximus?

This are 3 of the main settings for better and higher FSB, more mhz and better OC. It depends of the hardware and sometimes same components needs diferent setup, so work around those settings.

has anyone got past the vdroop issue with this board?
Under full load my vcore drops by 0.06v :(
Not with Loadline Calibration "enabled". In fact, not only do I not get a vdroop, but with my PLL, GTL Ref, and FSBT, I get a vboost to .01v under load so I get to use the lower vcore for idle and my 1.576v for full load gaming. and back to 1.565v at idled and reduced multi to 3.0GHz on 6x.Quote:

I can't speak for this mobo, but Vista Ult x64 had the required drivers alread for ICH7R> So I should think since ICH8R was our already by Jan this year, they should be there as well. If making the floppy from ASUS, make sure it's the x64 version.
Do a test, with just 1 or 2 of the Raptors on SATA 1 & 2, boot to Vista x64 DVD (or CD) w/o hiting f6 to see if it sees the drives and loads Vista set up, in AHCI/RAID ready mode, no array yet.
Remember, if it is allready loaded on one HDD in RAID/AHCI mode, you should be able to easily migrate to RAID "0" via the Matrix Mannager in Vista. It works this way for XP x64

What I can’t figure out is that when I load Windows XP/32 Bit, I have no problems at all with the RAID drivers so it can’t be a BIOS setting.

I think I saw this message when I was on my P5K. What OS are you running? I was on Vista x64. Anyhow, I would make sure that your chipset drivers are up to date, and that you have the correct software. Try clicking on the setup.exe instead of ASUSsetup.exe. I can't remember what I did TBH....Quote:

What I have seen from my Formula is that the mobo/bios cannot/will not controll the fan speed, no matter if the CPU is at low or full load. I have NOT installed ASUS AI Suite on Vista, due to the version that was on the CD bugged Vista. I have also switched off QFan controll, since it didnt work. The Nexus fan is running at just over 1000 rpm no matter what load the CPU is at. Shouldn't it just be connected to the Mobo and not by the Molex?
Its a Nexus 120 Real Silent fan. The pins on the mobo plug is 1 fewer then on the mobo contact. And it had both molex and mobo plug, so I was guessing the mobo plug was just to read rpm and to controll it, and the molex was for power. There were no manual with the fan, but I guess I may be able to digg something up from the homepage.
If anyone got more info on the subject, please reply!

Should either use mobo or molex, if I use molex it cannot do rpm controll on the fan. So if I remove the molex I guess the situation will change.
So I then need to enable the qfan controll in bios to make the mobo controll the speed of the fan?

Yeah, I found the info about it on Nexus homepage. Good I have had it running for just a few hours.
But if I enable the qfan thing in bios, do I still need some asus app to be installed also, or is it just run by the mobo/bios?

Notice all is upside down? yes its a btx format lolol probably not too confy for a propper heatpipe functioning, but thats what i have at present, Maximus regular was not available (dont plan on going water anytime soon)
So to compensate somehow i inserted a 50mm revoltec eliminating one of the mb mount screws.
(if you think will be for the benefit of all i can post this small mod i did at home.. if so where should i post it?)
