The VID's are CPU dependent. The Extreme CPU's tend to be binned better. Like my Extreme came with a vid slightly over a volt it was like 1.0xxx. I've seen some with .8xxx VID's. It really depends on the luck of the draw though. Sometimes lower binned parts will have lower VID's just because they are only guranteed to run at those lower clocks. These CPU's go through a binning process.
For an Extreme to make the cut it has the most stringent binning process, because they are fully unlocked, have the higher QPI spec, and are gurtanteed to run at their 3.2 advertised spec.
I still wanna qualify this with "There are NO gurantees with OC'ing". It still applies to this day eventhough it's much easier than it was. ANything you get over stock is just a bonus. If you are looking for 4 GHz out of every 920, that is not gonna happen. If it would happen Intel would be delivering them at 4GHz.
whats the latest news on the throttling problem, im stuck with this board as ive waited too long to return it.

You're right, neither one has to do with temps...this BIOS shot was from the Intel board with a 965XE.

I just finished a quick subzero(dryice)test with my 920 on the R2E.The turbo mode stayed on even with 1.55vcore set in bios.It seams it has to do with the cpu temperature:woot:

Seems to me that it is related to your temps folks.
I am watercooling my i920 and never got the multi dropped below x21 when using turbo.
My temps are going 60-65 tops @ 4200Mhz.
I will give Prime 95 a run @ 200x21 just to make double check that, Screenshot will be here soon.

A few days ago I had my case all open and my temps were about 10c lower than now when my case is closed.
As I said, the temps were about 60-65c @ 4200Mhz and the multi was up to x21 all the time.
From what I see now:
At the beginning of the bench, while the temps are raising, the multi is x21.
