Core i7: "Extended" motherboard back-plate highly recommended

Is it to help or to generate controversy?
I read his first post and what I took from it was essentially that one needed a backplate.
I agreed and posted a comment about what we do with dual socket boards when you can have up to 4+lbs of copper hanging with the 2 heatsinks.
Just made common sense to me and if other companies aren't doing it then thats their choice but for me with a $500.00 motherboard for my duals I used a solid plate long before it was fashionable. Again, just common sense to me.
Now as to gabe in general I've found him to be helpfull and yes, I kinow he is here to promote his products.
I've also found his products to be well made, reasonably priced and they do the job intended. Am I a bit of a Swiftech fanboi? Yea, I think I am.
My first water cooling experience was with his parts and that is what made a beleiver out of me. Just good stuff, that simple.
Now if he wants to come here, toss some ideas, show some new items and offer thoughts on design,etc I'm all for that.

I agree 100% and you'll note that I posted after his first post that I appreciated the information. I took exception more with the later post, which he subsequently edited. But generally I'm not a negative guy and I don't usually flame or provoke. I'm here to learn and to share what little I know.

Anyway, a big deal was made out of a small thing.

Personally, I much prefer cherry pie over pumpkin pie. Once the novelty of pumpkin pie wore off for me, it just wasn't that good any more. What about you?

Dude you guys aren't enjoying pie until you've tried a Sweet Potato Pie. I'm not talking about those frozen one's you buy at the grocery. Get one that's already pre-made/ready to eat at Kroger, or walmart in the bakery section. You'll thank me later! BTW they look almost identical to a Pumpkin Pie but Sooooo much better. Add a cup of Boiled Custard and your ready for the Holidays!

Another tip: Warm up your slice in the Microwave for 8 seconds for maximum enjoyment! ;)

Most pumpkin pie, isnt pumpkin. Pumpkin is actually rather bland, and so they use other types of squash.

And I prefer berry pies. Not a fan of cherries though.

Just a side note I do find it interesting that Foxconn's Bloodrage will except both new retention systems and the old 775 ones. Makes you think manufactures wanted everyone to swap out heatsinks for new ones.

After watching Zohan I will never look at pie the same way again . . .ewwww.

not really, all he did after his polite exchange with Gabe (end of their argument) was explain his own opinion because he works with consumer trends and stats for a living and it bug him to see #s pulled out of a hat. to which Gabe did point out it was merely a part of the ongoing conversation.

it is really part of Gabe's job when joining these kinds of forums to take some constructive criticism (positive and even negative ones) for him to be able to make a better product in the future. and he'll call it market research... he could have easily handed this kinds of things to any of his assistants but being Personally involve in research and feeling the market is also a good experience...

then you have post#40 which started another argument between 2 opposing oppinions... to which MM donned his hat and stepped in clearing the air...

agreed on this, too fast reading and not enough comprehending sometimes leads to arguments... one needs to step back a little and take a breather and reread a few times to comprehend some statements...

And, after all the digression, I'm still confused. It looks like the backplate that comes mounted on the ASUS P6T Deluxe (for example), is not meant to come off. From the pic of the new 1366 mounting kit for the Apogee GTZ, it doesn't look like it fits "around" the backplate ... so does it just sit on top of it. Sorry for being dense, just want to be careful.

Ok, so we need to know if Gabe's plate is supposed to go over the plates that come on the motherboards or replace them.
I'd guess go over but thats just a guess.


Edit: Just read from his first post in this thread:
"Swiftech recommends the use of an extended back-plate where high clamping pressure is applied (typically to improve TIM joint). By "extended", we mean a supplemental back-plate to reinforce the stock solution"
To me that says it goes over the factory backplate.. supplemental means "to add to" not replace.
One question from me for Gabe;
When are the back plates due out for socket 1366 to work with the ApogeeGT's?

Just want to make sure, cause with the Rampage Extreme, you can't use the supplied 775 backplate for the GTZ without cutting the middle out (but this board doesn't come with an installed backplate, so I know it's not the same).

I was going to use my EK Supreme on my i7 build, but i'm not sure now. Am i right in thinking the difference in temps between a max-safely-pressured block without an extended back plate and a (presumably tighter) max-safely-pressured block with the extra support isn't going to be that much?

Someone do a comparison :yepp:

i say this thread needs pictures of said extended backplate... and pies....

We are extremeists, we enjoy the pressure of mounting haehm waterblocks.

I had no issue mounting the block, tested a few times until I made sure when the block made good contact, and as far, good temps, 43c idle or so with a gpu in the loop.
Its however, as noted a backplate extension wouldnt hurt for those that are less careful and make mistakes.
Its good customer support in my book.

Safe = board traces still intact :yepp: Surely even extremists want this :D

Good to know it's ok without though, i think i'll go ahead with EK once my replacement block arrives. I went through my last one with a drill while trying to go through the tiny allen head screws (they were so tight the key only tore up the holes and they got stuck).

the stock back-plate is not supposed to come off, it is bolted through the board and into the socket. our pie fits around it ;)

back plate will remain the same. only the gt chrome hold-down plate will change.

Will this backplate work with other blocks as well?
