Just how much of a big deal is 1866 vs 1600 "default" memory speed If I am going to be CPU and memory overclocking anyway using a good 1600 1.5v CL9 kit ? I wont be using the on-board video ether.

Trying to find a nice 1866 kit without big heat spreaders is practically impossible it seems, and I don't want big heat spreaders as that makes finding a CPU cooler to much trouble unless I go Corsair H series, which im not overly comfortable with being my only option.

Can anybody confirm if the the APU VDDP default on a 3850 is 1.1v or 1.2v? Also will disabling the GPU help the OC?

Hi guys,

The only method I found for correct temperature reporting on Llano is via latest SpeedFan beta. Have a look at Temp3 and you'll get your numbers. Hopefully this isn't limited to my a75m-ud2h.

I would not recommend running the GNB/CNB ("VDDNB on Asus boards") anything higher than 1.25V.
1.3V seems to degrade the GNB/CNB quite quickly even when properly cooled.

I'm not on Asus but Gigabyte UD4H and the APU VDDP "normal" setting is 1.1v. Would setting this to the default 1.2v, help with RAM clocks then?

what version of the bios are you running, cause it sounds like one of the older ones with a missing option, the f7 revision has it properly reflected as 1.2v

Yeah, APU DDR-PHY/PCI-E on Biostar.

Some mixed results on my Llano 3670k.... Could be my power supply holding me back. Unfortunately am using a 20pin ATX Enermax EG465P-VE I scrounged up from an old build. Don't have anything better on hand without gutting my current system :(. Enermax +12v is a little low and I suppose I'm not helping my board get all the juice it can being a 20pin ATX + 4pin. I'm going to play PSU merry-go-round with my current system now and drop in the 620HX in to test it out.

With the older 20pin Enermax , the best I can do right now is 3.6GHz (24x150 Bclk), 16GB 30nm Samsung Low Profile @ 2000MHz 9-10-9-27 . Rock Solid Linpack / IBT stable, but can't get any higher than that. Usually results in an instant reboot instead of Linpack failure. Playing around with different multiplier setups, dropping ram to 1333MHz didn't seem to help. I've cycled through all Biostar TA75A+ Bios revisions, nothing significant.

Pretty impressed with power consumption and gating features on Llano. Full overclock vs stock ... the difference in idle power is very close. The system that it is replacing (Phenom II x3 720BE) eats up a lot more power idle (almost more than double). It will make for a good 24/7 system replacement. Definitely not a very good overclocking platform, but it is fun and something different/challenging. I will post some screenshots of my best results once I try out a few more things and rule out factors like the PSU.

Think we can extend that to don't run much higher on Llano in general. Good way to take out the GPU even sub zero with +300mv on the giga.

I haven't had any degregation issues on either chip and i have ran up to 1.45v

don't know if is the same for you but with my llanos are better with low voltages, specially on cpu/nb...
btw i tested my new 3870k on air...i confirm worse bus clock than locked llanos..max bus i reached was 157 Mhz...

Would there be a consensus from all who have posted in this thread as to the best choice of FM1 ATX(not MATX) motherboard in terms of hardware quality(VRMs and so on),BIOS quality(Overclocking results and regular updates) value and manufacturer RMA/Support ? am in the UK for the purposes of pricing and the RMA/Support question.

May have solved my memory and CPU cooler issues so this is the last thing besides Case to 100% before setting in stone the plan for the Llano build(which actually for the most part besides the obvious changes doubles up as the 960T build)

Yeah it just kinding depends on how hard your pushing the stuff, When your pouring ln2 on stuff it mostly becomes a lack of voltage issue it seems for the supreme top end, For air and phase change its just enough voltage to get by. This is also very true for the none K model cpus it seems, though i havent tested this yet outside the 3650 and 3850. Will probably be picking up one of every chip if i can afford it :D

@sinner, the above applys to the motherboards aswell, if your not gonna be pouring ln2 on it, the power phases on most of the boards are more than enough, I had no problem even with the Biostar ta75a+ getting to 4.7ghz on a 3850 under ln2. Though it seems that for air clocks gigabytes voltage control and baseline settings seem to be the best to work with. The asus boards tend to drive the chips a little heavier voltage wise than you intend, leaving you with much more heat.

cpu is scaling well with the vcore, the voltage that my cpu's don't like is cpu/nb.. i have the best performance vith it at 1,2/1,25v maximum, if i increase more, performance is worse..today i'll contact a LN2 supplier and in the next week i'm going to do some LN2 testing and see what i can do..hope to be a litte lucky:D:D

I take it if im OCing and these things are multi unlocked there is very little point in getting the 3870K over the 3670K ? ..3870K is £17 more.. would spending that give me a better end result ?

1903 is the first one which has it actually working for a 6550D GPU..

This may be a dumb question, but I'm using my old CRT monitor on my Llano setup, and when I up the FSB, the monitor refresh rates go all screwy and it doesn't work. I'm assuming that the PCIX bus speeds, memory controller, everything are locked to the CPU fsb? How can I deal with this? I'm using the A6-3650 and GA-A75m-UD2H

VGA drops out around 120MHz BCLK on Llano.
Use DVI with VGA-DVI adapter instead.

similar results to what i got out of my gpu's for performance, Much lower than what i was getting out of my 3850, was getting 1100+ out of that chip :\ will probably spend more time on it this weekend, since i got about 50l of ln2 on hand.

I'm having trouble with the Realtek 8111E Gigabit on my Biostar TA75A+. After BCLK 125, it just craps out and does not establish any connection within Windows. Thats really too bad because I can boot as high as 155-160FSB. I have tried combinations of increasing APU-NB, FCH voltage, vcore.... nothing helps the Ethernet controller boot higher. Any ideas?

On my 3670k, my best Linpack IBT stable results are 3.69GHz. The best practical combination of speed/voltage is at 3.6GHz. I can post all day at 3.7, 3.8, 3.9GHz, but no shot at all in getting it stable with the cooling I am using (Antec 620 Kuhler). Anything higher than 3.6GHz, the voltage needed goes up by a ton. Results are pretty much in line with what the rest of you guys are getting. Idle Power consumption is great due to gating, but at Load its almost as bad as an x6

I haven't experienced any ethernet problems, but i haven't gotten the FSB (can I call it that anymore... lol) above 110 with the crappy Patriot Gamer 2 memory I have.

Can anyone explain the different voltages on Llano boards and how they affect the CPU/GPU? Those strange NB/FCH? Commonly used voltage settings?

Problem is this is mostly for Gigabyte, other boards like mine (Biostar TA75A+) tend to relabel things / called differently

you can always try to use slower memory dividers to get higher fsb speeds

Thanks for the guide, yes i'm going to use dividers, I'm just trying to figure out how to hook up my CRT to a DVI port while retaining ATI dual graphics.. since the onboard DVI is digital only. I can't use the CRT for high fsb, it just doesn't go on. I've ordered a new LCD monitor but it won't be here for a week or so.

Also.. does anyone know how to overclock your discrete video card (i have a 6670) when in ATI Dual graphics mode? The sliders in the vision control center for oc'ing dissapear when you select dual graphics.

I've found that my vga seems to drop out as low as 105??

Sadly don't have any other spare cables with me, awaiting a HDMI I picked up just so I can have some fun clocking my new llano setup.
I'm pretty pleased with it so far, although performance in games is a little meh, very jumpy framerates if nothing else, even in stuff like tf2 with ultra low quality configs....

For sure, I am finding llano depends heavily on memory bandwidth. Did you look at the gigabyte OC guide? What cooler are you using?

What monitoring software do people recommend? Since I can't find one that gives actual temps for the cpu..... (ones I normally use give me random/negative/really high figures which change on their own, regardless of what the cpu is doing....)

Some chips will drop out earlier than others for the bclk, I have had a couple that will drop network controller as low as 110fsb, Others that dont drop the network controller till around 170fsb. It does not seem to be mother board related as the same results where shown across three different motherboards from three different manufacturers.

If your Having problems pushing past 105fsb, the first place you should be looking is the ram and ram timings, after check voltages and cooling obviously. Usually memory is the cuplrit here.

Well, as I said, I lose vga out at 105, and so can't push it any further since I can't see what's on screen :P
Once my hdmi cable arrives I'll be able to try pushing it further, and I always drop my ram when clocking to begin with (in this case I'd drop it one divider, down to 1600s atleast)

Ahh yes, these boards no likey the vga, They dont like add in video cards much either at higher bclks, which is part of makes it so interesting when you start overclocking them. You'll reach a point once you get your video problem fixxed that the ram comment will come into play. Since Llanos and ram go hand in hand.

So what's the best ram for llano? This patriot stuff I have is killing me.

I wrote a private message to @The Stilt as I saw he is very active in the thread about ASUS motherboard bios issues but I will write it here too.
I am looking for the latest updated bios for ASUS F1A75-V EVO board because I am not happy with the latest official bios' OC combined with 3870K. All the links in the thread aren't active anymore so I can't download the modded bioses.

Moreover, I have a strange problem with the memory. I haven't tried for maximum overclock but even on default voltage 3.4-3.5GHz is bootable and runs in Windows (haven't tried stability as well). The mobo has no problem to reach refference clock up to 140 and the GPU stands as well (don't know how to reduce the multiplier of the GPU so this is around the limit for the reference multiplier). The strange thing comes when trying to overclock the memory which is 2x4GB Geil Evo Corsa 2133 CL10. Everything above 1950MHz is an instant crash in all sort of ref. clock frequencies (below 110, below 130, above 140). I tried all sorts of timing and varied the memory voltage from 1.5(default) up to 1.7V but without success. I kept the cpu below 3GHz when trying this and left the GPU at the lowest multiplyer I can set - 6. The APU is currently with the box cooler but I wanted to make some tests to be sure that its worth it to buy a cooler. SATA is on IDE mode and the monitor is connected via DVI-D and latest bios 1601. Tried everything down to 0603 with the same outcome.
I am quite confused with the EFI bios as I've used a lot of Gigabyte, Asus and MSI mobos but with the classic approach in bios representation. The things I would like to ask are - do I have to rise any voltage (either NB, SB, memory controller) in order to get 2133MHz running and generally what would be an appropriate setup for the gpu and the memory, the cpu is pretty straightforward with the unlocked multiplier. I have experience with AM2 and AM2+ systems but have never overclocked DDR3 memory nor Llano, so some suggestions about good combinations(suitable for highest performance with the APU) of memory frequencies and timings would be great as well.

P.S. After the latest tests even 1600 CL9 is not stable... Either I am missing someting or the memory should be replaced for faulty. I was hoping that the memory will be with Hyper BFR chips and will OC good.
P.P.S. I solved the problem with the memory so far, the problem was in the secondary timings. After loosing them a bit 2300 CL9 is bootable. Will try more OC when I have time.

Ok, I found the solution. It's really easy, maybe too easy. :)

There is a slider in Easy Tune 6, that is not limited at 1.8 volts. I will let you know, if it's working. CPU-Z is positive, but who knows. :)

I'm using 30nm Samsung Low Profile 1.35v sticks with my Llano. I have 4x4GB running right now at 1680MHz @ 7-8-7-22 2T. Could not get it stable with 1T at these timings. 1T is stable around 9-9-9-27 with 16GB, but I am pretty much an amateur when it comes to overclocking every last timing out of memory. For what its worth, they run very cool and are cheap.... no over the top heatspreaders that might block components

There is another possibility. K10Stat can raise voltage to. Just set 1.55 for 1.95 volts.

Anyone in here using a Asus f1a75-i deluxe itx board? I have a 3870k at 3.3 and gpu at 800mhz but cannot get my memory to even run at stock. Its corsair xms3 1600 rated at 7-7-7-20 2t 1.65volt. It crashes/bsod anything over 1333 even with 1.4volts to nb and running timings of 9-9-9-34. I think it is setting my secondary timings to tight but I don't know what to set them as. I know its not my ram as it ran at 1866 8-8-8-24 on last Intel board no probs. Tried a different stick of gskill 2133 and this also bsod anything higher than 1333. I am running the newest bios 602. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Sorry hadn't checked this out in a few days. I just used easytune like you said, I haven't volt modded the board yet. Though I probably will when the contest is over. I am not sure if NB is the problem when you start maxing out. I have been pretty steadily been running it @ the max or even backed off a little and it hasnt kept me from pushing the chip further to much. My biggest enemy has been my subpar pot, and easytune. You can fairly easily raise the voltage past 2v on the vcore. 2.384v vcore is the highest i have gotten but it seems to either droop down, or not be registered as higher, My guess is its drooping .

How does the internal GPUs overclock?

The GPU's are overclocked by increasing the Base clock from 100, ie 110 = 10% gpu overclock. The A6-3650 has a 444mhz gpu stock, and the a8-3850 has a 600mhz gpu. Also, the voltages for the GPU must be increased slightly if you are reaching say more than 130bclk.

I really need a modded bios for my mobo, the best I can get is 150bclk. The CPU isn't very bad (more like mediocre) - 3977 for validation and 3540(I believe it can do up to 3560 but 3540 suits the rest of the system) stable (with graphics @ 894 and memory @ 2200CL9) but I am really annoyed by the bus limitaion. I can boot with 150Mhz(as you can easily calculate this = 900MHz gpu, and mine boots up to 980 normally with oc on everything so when only it is clocked it should do even more) and every MHz up gives me a crash. This cannot be motherboard limitation, has to be something elese.
P.S. For now I got P1713 on 3DMark11 on room temperature, will try open window soon.

Update, got my Mushkin 996997 memory.. most likely BFR. Very happy with it so far, now I can actually overclock my A6-3650. Cpu voltage is 1.5875 and I don't think it needs that much, memory 1.72v and could probably be lower or tighter timings. FYI I am using a PCIX 6670 not the onboard graphics, at least until I get a DVI cable so I can overclock and use the onboard output (for dual graphics w/ the 6670). This is just with corsair A50 air cooling, and it could probably go to 3.9 or 4 ghz.

Most of the APUs are done between 3.5-3.7...you might gain a little more by using discrete graphics.

for the everyday person not using LN2, FM1 unlocked chips dont add headroom, just make it easier hitting max cpu/gpu without ramping up the BCLK too much.
The big hype and misinformation came from fake chinese results using MSI Burst Mode, and word that overclocking was held back by BCLK. Truth is, Llano just doesn't have OC headroom and FM1 was never meant to be a serious overclocking platform. With a maxed out Llano chip, you will be around the level of a Phenom II x4 980 BE on air/water.

That being said, my 3670k does 3.62GHz rock stable on a Custom 15GB size IntelBurnTest run. Idle power consumption is great, but full load is atrocious. I guess we have GloFlo 32nm process to thank for that

Yeah my A8-3850 with F1A75M-Pro maxes out at around 3.64GHz with discreet graphics card. Running 140fsb at 1.45v. This thing love ram though.

For those who don't know the locked processors (3650,3850) can also run multipliers below their stock multiplier, just not above. This is really useful on the 3850 to run a 26x multi.

I would say this is a yes, my results on air where close to the same as what i got out of my 3850, For the 3x 3870's i have. They all clocked to around 3.8ghz on air, but admittedly I didnt spend much time tuning them on air.

Ln2 wise they did 5790, 5970, and 6016.

I wanted to max all the components of the system and felt bad being held back by the mobo. :) Otherwise, mine APU is not a good overclocker (I'm using the integrated VGA), couldn't even validate at 4GHz at any voltage.

Are those voltages safe for 24/7? My 3870 gets really hot above 1.55V with TRUE Spirit 140 and the default fan.
P.S. Has anyone found a way to set the multiplier of the vga lower in order to get higher BCKL?

I think the only way to separate the IGP portion of the chip from the rest of the clocks is to use a Gigabyte mobo which supports that feature.

Any hopes that Asus will integrate that in their BIOSs? The latest bios of my motherboard is the first that supports any kind of gpu multiplier modifications and doesn't work as I would like to.

Power consumption
Upon request, a few fans, I also measured a total of four points of voltage and frequency of the total consumption of the PC without a monitor. Measurements were made using socket watmetru. Group contained the motherboard F1A75-V PRO, 2GB RAM 2x 2000 MHz at 1.75V, Corsair AX1200W (largely ineffective in this group), 1x HDD Samsung F1 500GB, 3870K-A8 CPU cooling Noctua NH-D14.
I first processor přetaktoval to nearly the maximum stable frequency to voltage 1.55V. It was 3728 MHz and 894 MHz processor, integrated graphics core. The second profile was reasonable overclock with a relatively low voltage (but not by tuning to the lowest limit), while maintaining decent performance even on iGPU. The CPU was at 3400 MHz, the graphical portion of 816 MHz. The third condition was the default (3000MHz and 600 MHz graphics core) with all energy saving features active. Interestingly, my piece was essential 1.392V voltage and the voltage is certainly quite exaggerated. The last condition was podvoltování CPU frequency. At 3000 MHz and just enough to 1.285V.

I will try sub zero room temperatures if it gets colder (I hope I haven't missed the last chance), today I benched only on 11 degrees ambient temperature as it got from 5 to 8 degrees outside... The 3870 gets extremely hot with high clock and voltage, mine wants 1.58V for best results on short tests and aroun 1.56V for longer tests. My previous Phenom II X4 940 wasn't that hot at 4.1+GHz. I have all the benchmarks I've done up in HWBot, but I'm too lazy to upload them all. I forgot to redo the validation, too, so I haven't made my last call. :)

Hi Flank3r, excellent benchmarks. Just curious, but have you tried using IntelBurnTest/Linpack to test 24/7 stability?

In my experience with F1A75-V Pro and 3670k, CPU Throttling will occur when one of these conditions is met:
A) Core Temp temperature exceeds 70C, which is also Tj Max. Asus AI suite reports 45C when Core Temp is about 70C
B) TDP Exceeds 120W

I suspect this is what is happening to you that is causing your benches to be slower once you overclock higher. I've tried getting around this by disabling all power options in BIOS.... cycled through all BIOS revisions starting from 0605, to Stilt's custom bioses, to the latest builds available... no luck :(. I can't seem to prevent throttling from happening... it seems to be built into the chip and can't be turned off. The one app that repeatedly makes my Llano throttle is IntelBurnTest. I know it is only a synthetic load and not indicative of real world apps, but the fact that it makes my Llano throttle bothers the crap out of me. It pretty much means that you can only bench single threaded or lightly multithreaded apps when using a higher OC. I am not even using built in graphics, but I suspect a game like BF3 places a more realistic gaming load than Futuremark apps to test for 2d+3d throttling.

The highest 24/7 stable result I can get that passes IntelBurnTest/Linpack grilling is 3.6GHz @ 1.5125v. Any higher, it exceeds both TDP (as measured from a Killawatt) and Temperature (I am using a Kuhler 620 in Push/Pull). For what its worth, I think the concept of a system on a single chip is great, but its still not priced right. I am lucky I was able to score the F1A75-V Pro for $60 on Amazon slickdeal, and another $100 for my A6-3670k. FM1 was fun overclocking, but the hard throttling limits preventing 24/7 use is a letdown. Sucks... FM1 was never meant to be a overclocking enthusiast platform. Regardless, I am replacing my daily driver/gaming computer with this until I make this a HTPC. Will stick around with this as my main PC until PD rolls and future incarnations come around

It can be due to the better cooling the Gentle Typhoons I use for benching are monsters) but the chip is crap for 24/7, couldn't even make 3.6GHz and the maximum frequency at which it passes Cinebench 11.5 was around 3.6GHz too with the 24/7 setup. I was even considering buying a second TY-140 fan for the TRUE Spirit as the default one might not be enough. Its memory controler is very good though and the gpu is very good overclocker. I will try the 3d benchmarks on open window with cpu around 3.7GHz. The chip's really strange as it needs a lot of voltage to get high frequencies and is very very hot. I don't have a discrete graphics right now and I think that with the IGU disabled it can probably overclock a bit more but that's about the limit of the platform. I don't belive all the reviews stating their samples are rock solid at 3.8GHz, that's not possible or the just the reviewer's samples are very carefully chosen ones.

I've never seen trottling on mine 3870K and I bet that with the IGU at 960+MHz with 1.37V and 1.58V on the CPU at 3700+MHz it is well above 200W.

You try using IntelBurnTest Stuen4y? Its very possible to not throttle but it depends on the game/bench load. Use Core Temp + IBT.
I can SuperPi all day too at 1.58v @ 3.7+ , but its not a large enough load to induce that throttling. As you said yourself, you were having trouble above 3.6GHz for 24/7.

Using IBT on VeryHigh, I am pulling about 250W on full 2D load across my system. Of course it varies by PSU efficiency, and other components you might have (I am using discrete). But definitely check out Core Temp if you can

I'm usually stressing the cpu with prime95 64 bit or OCCT 4.0 but using the IGP its the best to test real games or 3DMark 11 combined test for stability as things change when both the cpu and the gpu are stressed. I agree SPi isn't anything demanding (its 1 thread only). I'll try coretemp and IBT for the 24/7 settings and will post the results. Things really change when you OC all the parts - bclk, memory controller, gpu and cpu so my 24/7 will be slightly lower than people using discrete (why to buy Llano if you plan to use discrete graphics, but ok). How do you measure that power, using some kind of software or using a wattmeter? If it's the first option don't rely on that measurements.

I bought Llano because I got both cpu+mobo at good prices, otherwise I agree - it doesn't make sense if using discrete graphics. I'm coming from a 720BE, so regardless it is a step up for me. My plan is to move the Llano to HTPC using integrated graphics after my next PC upgrade and see how Trinity, PD do.

I am reading power off a Kill-a-watt meter, but Asus EPU Probe also reads it for the processor. According to the software, its just around 120W on full IBT 2D load before throttling for me. My Killawatt meter reads about 250W under 2D load due to the other components I have in my system aside from the LLano

But...this is unrealo world...I think, prime 95 blend for 1h is OK for clasic daily use.

I've never seen the point of stressing cpu's so hard, just test them in similar conditions to you want them to be stable at that speed for, applies to all levels of overclocking, want it just to run cpu-z, then I'll push it as hard as I can just so it can do that, even if nothing else, want it stable for daily use, then I'll stress is as hard as it will get stressed in daily usage, no point in pushing it harder.
Currently got mine sitting at 3.5Ghz @ 1.4v Haven't tried lowering the volts etc, may have a bit of a play this week actually.

That's not 100% true as you may use you pc say 3 weeks without restarts with multiple sleeps or so and you will have trouble even from this if the system is not 100% stable.8+ hours prime95 is more like the basic load for daily stabilit. If you want to be sure that the system cannot hang, ever, the time starts to get measured in days. :)
P.S. Does anyone have this problem when the pc sleeps and then after wake up its extremely slow. No matter if its oc'ed or not?

Try with loose timings of the memory, frequency helps much more than tight timings, especially for the IGU. Are those frequencies stable? What's the cooling?

I've put another TY-140 fan on the TRUE Spirit 140 and the temps are down about 5-7 degrees, so I'll try higher voltages and I hope I'll be able to stabilize higher frequencies.

I don't know if I've mentioned about the problem with the vertical lines (more like gpu artifacts from very high gpu clock on a discrete video card but without the polygons and different colours) that flash through the screen on every kind of not intense 3d - flash (webpages), windows aero, etc. The problem appears only after several days of usage without restart/shut down and happens on 100% stable clocks - both at 820 and 870MHz of the GPU with everything up to 1.26V on the gpu (I'm in the process of long term testing when (if) it will disspear with higher voltage, lower voltages didn't help). The system is rock solid stable, tested both on syntethics (prime95, occt, furmark, 3dmark 11 combined test loop, etc.) and long period (3+) of played games Crysis 2, Skyrim, Civ V, Age of Empires 3 (may look stupid but it's pretty demanding on 1920x1080 all max), Starcraft 2. The temperatures were about 50-54 degrees after several hours gameplay and now don't climb above 45-6 degrees. I've tried changing the drivers and have tried 11.12 and 12.1 but without luck. On default that isn't observed but I'll never use the system on default and the memory on lower speeds than 2133(now it's 2170 but it's stable up to 2200, I think even 2220 is not a problem).

Presently using the onboard VGA so no going for higher RAM speeds without bus overclocking.

So far, this test rig is stable in short runs of LinX, SPM and long runs of Skyrim/Syndicate gaming. Probably end up as a surfing and casual gaming HTPC in a tiny ITX box so not going to bother with crazy hours of stress testing. :D
