Has *ANYONE* noticed throttling in the Asus 6970 BIOS? (not the modded 6950 bios?), regardless of voltage?
I said it earlier, but everyone completely ignored me (again), but didn't that review site (that was translated) say that the Asus bios has powertune DISABLED (or at least partially disabled) in the BIOS?
Would that explain the higher temps?
Then again, I don't know.......even with the asus bios, the slider has an effect on the max FPS in furmark, so what were they talking about, anyway....?
Hmm i'm not sure, my powertune slider was still there at +20%. Temps are probably different due to 6970 BIOS using 1.17v no?
Some of my results using the 6950 modded BIOS and smartdoc might've been null and void, due to smartdoctor causing stuttering and split second fps drops. :shakes:
used the last version from ASUS and then smartdoctor to unlock voltage.
TIP : i had to reinstall drivers to smartdock recognise and open de feature
Flashed my sap.6950 to asus 6970 and it works :D but smartdoc didn't recognise my card and won't start :( using win 7 64bit
Also reinstalled smartdoc.
edit^^ will try to reinstall the drivers
edit2 finally got smartdoctor working

Someone at TPU just ran AtiTool with a real HIS 6970 and saw the same artifacts a the rest of us.
That's excellent news :yepp: thanks.
Going to flash back to 6970 BIOS (although i'll flash the HIS 6970 BIOS this time, just because my card is, well... a HIS).
Hopefully by the time the happy holidays are over people will start getting to work on their software, if they aren't already...
For the time being, enjoy your night people; happy new year!
To keep my "6970" cool, I've decided lower the core to 810Mhz and the memory to 1250Mhz for daily using, is this okey ? Or I have to run it at the real 6970 stock (880-1375)
Guys that want an unlockable HD6950 better hurry up and buy it now , a new Revision its coming after this early batch. I just ordered 2x Asus HD6950 From Newegg before the s*it hits the fan.
" This revision might also give AMD the opportunity to hard disable BIOS unlocking of SIMDs from 6950 to 6970. "

Start -> type "media" in the search bar.
Alternatively:
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe (64-bit)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe (32-bit)
Eh, there is nothing in the WMP folder (64bit) and when I try the 32bit version, the following message pop up : WMP 11 has not been installed properly (wtf ?) please download in M$ website blah blah ...
I'm using Win 7 64bit Ultimate, and can not find any WMP 12 download link in M$ website since its included in Win 7 ultimate ( which now, I dont have the WMP 12 ) !!!
OK after actually having some time today here's what I found
6970 bios 1.175v and 1.6vdimm I was running 925/1400 and I never had an issue. 950 would restart driver in bc2 nam.
I went reading about the shader unlock bios that keeps the 6950 1.1v and 1.5vdimm. So I flashed to it, unlocked shaders and kept 6950 volts, 925 restarts now but I can run 900/1375....
So for 24/7 use people might want to compare... seems to me right now 6950 volts with 1536 shaders makes more sense since my core doesnt scale for crap with 1.175 anyway and I havnt really pushed the memory above 1400 to find out how high it goes.
From past ddr5 ATI cards seems kinda pointless anyway since 1400 is already 5600mhz effective correct?

Lol ,it is the only way now for voltage control...didn't try TriXX yet.
I tried adjusting voltage in smartdoc, not sure its working for me. Can't move 10mhz even with a healthy bump to voltages.
sapphire, flashed yesterday, working so far..
artifacts in atitool tho.
Are there any issues with oc beyond CCC limits and with crossfire? (ULPS)
3rd gigabyte 6970 went through.
Powercolor flashed with Powercolor 6970 bios unmodded working well OC to 950/1450 easy :D
I flashed 2x HIS 6950s with the TPU unlock kit using the 6970 bios.
Got it 940/1400 +20% stable in Metro 2033 CFX mode but is hot and fans spin up loud. No problem. 950 core crashes out the driver, but not windows.
But I tested EDUKe (openGL) at 940 core and it crashes out the game.
Drop it to 920 core, +20% in ccc, Metro stable, Eduke Crashes.
Flashed the unlocked 6950 with shaders only and it only lets me OC to 840 / 1250 ram. Eduke still crashes !!!!!
So flashed it back to 6970 bios and have it at 920/1400 +20% CFX for daily use.
Can you guys who have unlocked your 6950s test openGL games for stability? Such as Doom 3, Prey, EDuke or any other test? It seems to put MORe strain on the cards than directx titles? or perhaps Eduke is just a not support engine in ATI drivers.
Nvidia drivers runs all opengl games with no issues.
I can't get Doom 3 to run properly (keeps reseting to 4:3 screen rations) so cannot test at 1080p native resolution.
with 6950 unlocked bios i get no artifacts in atitool. But anyone knows a 6950 bios with ccc overclocking unlocked?
I was running Darkplaces just fine which is an OpenGL Quake source port. Are you using the latest version of eDuke32?
Edit, yup eDuke crashes for me too. It didn't with 10.10e on a 6870. I guess that we should report it to AMD.
Just ordered a pair of MSI 6950's before the new batch hits :)
i have confirmation that atitool artifacts on stock 6970 also, regardless of anti aliasing. so it should be considered quite safe to use 6970 bios..
Am I the only one hitting 90-92C temps during heaving gaming/benching?
my fan is set to gradually ramp up to 60% when the card hits 60c using the fan profile settings
Playing bc2 I rarely hit 60c, but I have the card flashed to the unlocked 6950 mod bios for shaders but retains the 1.1 vcore and 1.5vdimm over the 6970's 1.175 and 1.6.
Clocks are 900/1400
I think the bios changes the temps, and I don't think it's just the voltage. ON the modded 6950 bios with smartdoctor at 1.3 I only got upto 77c with the core at 1000mhz which does't make sense where I can be in the high 80's or upto 90 with the asus 6970 bios with the core only at 920.
Rattle, what program are you using to OC to 900/1400 with the unlocked shader 6950 bios? CCC? CCC2?
When I unlocked the shaders only, I cannot OC past 840/1250 with CCC2.
With the 6970 bios, I can OC up to 950/1450 via CCC2.
Has MSI afterburner been updated yet or has there been a new beta to allow voltage adjusting on these cards? I'm getting extremely impatient:confused:
Removed
Just go to the afterburner.cfg and change EnableUnofficialOverclocking to 1 and restart AB.
I haven't gotten around to replacing the TIM yet but I've been using Afterburner to set a custom fan profile as well. My temps are staying in the low 70s and the card is usually under 50% fan speed.
I may look into an aftermarket cooling solution for this card though. It isn't bad now but during the summer I'm sure that this card is going to get loud.
yea i replaced the TIM and shaved off about 5C as well.
Man ,I love the silence of my unlocked 6950 with wc. 1.34V 1075/1475 @30degrees load, no heat,no noise
@Bullu$: how did you adjust the vcore to 1.34v? any screens/proofs that show that 1.34 are *really* applied to the core?
thanks
It does work, i've tried it. Although you gotta have a certain ASUS BIOS. There's no way of proving it, just gotta trust your fellow xtremist ;)
Bullus, that's one heck of a card you got there :) Some nice results coming out with watercooling. I may have to see what difference some cold ambient with fan @ 100% can do. I'm sure i'll be able to hit 1050 at least. Will wait for better software of course.
I feel like applying new TIM, sounds easy enough, i've done it before on other cards. But i dunno if i can be bothered, don't want to risk it. Can imagine ripping one of the pads on the mem or vrms or something  maybe after a while i will.
looking forward to my W/C and some new RBE/afterburner :D
U can't run 1075/1475 @ stock volts, U can visit me @home for proof:D

I have a waterblock in the loop setup and ready to go on the card, but I haven't because I don't have anything for the VRM or MEM. Do you have sinks on your VRM or Memory chips?
Really I am just hoping for swiftech to come out with the heatsink like they did for the HD5850/HD5870.....
@ Bullu$:
Very nice!
Might expect some real 6970 cards to hit 1100MHz or more with full cover blocks, which is promising! 25% OC after all. Even higher in your case. :)
I think these cards might need some hard mods to fly, though... I guess we'll find out soon enough. :yepp:
Yeah, I am talking about the heatsinks that get paired along with the MCW60. They look like this .....

Just got my PowerColor 6950 today and flashed it with the modded Asus bios. Unfortunately I can't get smartdoctor to work, it doesn't find the card. Reinstalling the drivers didn't help either.
Looks like my 6950 can't handle even 910 MHz on the core, though memory is stable at 1450 Mhz. With kombustor stress temps stay <83c with fan speed at 47%. Going over 50% is too much for my ears. :D
I guess I'll just wait for Afterburner to add voltage support.
u need the drivers from the asus website
Water blocks x 2 in route for my Sapphire flashed cards :D
Good day guys , im looking for an unlocked Bios for HD6970 ( I just received my Asus HD6950 and i want to unlock it with the extreme Bios ) and working smart doctor with unlimited voltages, i know its out there in the wild , if someone will be so kind to share that bios and smartdoctor with me i will really appreciate it and thank you in advanced , you can send me a PM anytime.
Chispy.
Don't work if u don't have the right bios ;)
Just use these

Is anyone able to show their Sensors tab in GPU-Z when running with ASUS 6850 BIOS + smartdoctor?
I tried it but GPU-Z just shows 1.1v for me no matter what I set it to, so my OC is worse than with a 6970 BIOS (1.175v).
920mhz core artefacts with smartdoctor set to 1.3v ... whereas with the 6970 BIOS it's fine.
Also smartdoctor looks like it was made in 1999 to go with a PC chips motherboard ...
Yeah, it seems I used an old version of smartdoctor, now it works. Looks like this one doesn't go very far though, 1.3V and 950Mhz is stable. Better keep it at 900@1.17V. :shakes:
If my card is running a 6970 bios with a fresh driver install after the flash then how does AIDA64 and HWINFO know to report my card as a 6950?
The card is still a 6950. It's just a 6950 with a 6970 BIOS to unlock shaders. People keep trying to say that the 6950 and 6970 are IDENTICAL besides the power connectors and the RAM chips, but that's just not the case. They may use the same GPU, but the PCB's are slightly different and there are parts unique to each card.
And, as far as the reporting a 6950, that's probably due to a hard-coded hardware ID that can NOT be erased with a BIOS flash. That's why the ID shown in cpu-z remains the same (for 6950)--it can't be changed.
Reporting another succesful unlock , Asus HD6850 fully unlocked and stable to HD6970.

I have a question about the voltage tweaks I would like to ask every one. I bought a new 6970 from Microcenter today, it's a Diamond. I flashed it to the Asus BIOS. When I use Smartdoctor it tells me that it has changed the voltage but I don't know whether or not to believe it. GPU-Z shows that it only goes up too 1.175 when it is benching.
Should I believe Smartdoctor telling me that it has been changed to what ever value I set it to or GPU-Z?? I've googled the hell out of this and haven't found a clear answer about it yet. I seen one guy where his GPU-Z picked it up right or, what he had set it too in Smartdoctor and it made me mad that was about it lol.
Hope some one knows more then me about this one.
Can someone show screens of benchmark results using a stock HD 6950 vs an HD 6950 unlocked but running STOCK HD 6950 clocks?
From what I see, the actual increase in performance just comes from the increased frequencies, not the supposed unlocked shaders
Yea, BUT I cant run in CFx because they only gave me the shorty cf bridges(Sata raid ports in the way)... I need a couple long ones.. anyone wanna send me some? :p
It looks like it's changing the voltage according to the test I ran, despite gpu-z not seeing the change. I ran a bench @ 960 / 1500 after letting the fan cool it down running it at 50%. I let the fan stay at the same speed the whole test. The I turned the Voltage up to 1.3v and did the test again after letting the GPU cool down again. The temp difference in the runs were about 13c so it looks like it's working despite GPU-Z not seeing the change. Here's a pic showing the two different runs with the temps captured.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5161/...8d32236687.jpg
Evening true, havent seen you around in ages!
Deffinately seems like the voltage is being applied. +13c is too much of a change to be random factor. As long as you are positive the GPU wasn't getting any hotter before changing the voltage, its fairly deffinate that 1.3v is being applied.
Right so, the higher voltage increases temps, and stabilises higher overclocks... anyone else want to try refute whether it's working or not? :p:
I just seen that some one with a 6950 was getting an actual reading in GPU-Z and I'm not. I wanted to make sure that this card isn't some cheap knock off reference before I sell my 5870 with the spitfire and vrm5 thermalright coolers on it.
If it wasn't changing them then I was going to take it back and look for a better one before I sell my old one. Sorry for the silly questions, just trying be safe that's all. I hate that I can't see the actual reading.
got two sapphire 6950's unlocked to 6970's for a friend, did a quick test at default 6970 speed compared to my 2x5850's 2gb:
http://3dmark.com/compare/3dm11/354209/3dm11/283876
I expected a bit more.. the only thing I noticed is the new cards fly on heaven benchmark :)
Got my 2 MSI 6950's to unlock :)
No worries man, wasn't having a dig at you personally :toast:
It is just me or does anyone else smell their graphics card burning when gaming? I was playing metro at 950/1450, but forgot to set a higher fan speed, so it was left on auto (<35% speed load), and i smelt it getting heated... temps must've been hitting high 70's at least. Even with 46% i still smell it, which is my max bearable. Temps are ok at that fan speed though, keeps it under 70c indefinitely.
Here too. Playing Crysis @ 3840x2400 gets it up to 91°...
I did some benching with different bios and clocks:
6950 default bios and clocks:
3DMark 11 = P4565
load temps = 76C @35% fan speed (these were measured with MSI Kombustor)
6950 default bios @6970 clocks
3DMark 11 = P4884
load temps = 77C @35% fan speed
6970 bios @890/1375 clocks (Asus voltmod bios clocks)
3DMark 11 = P4977
load temps = 81C @36% fan speed
6970 bios @910/1450 clocks (As high as my card can go stable with 1,17v)
3DMark 11 = P5059
load temps = 82C @36% fan speed
6970 bios @950/1450 clocks (1,3v)
3DMark 11 = P5205
load temps = 70C @50% fan speed
Looks like the difference between 6970 and 6950 clock to clock is pretty insignificant. All in all I got about 15% extra performance in games with the OC and flash, decent but nothing spectacular.
Pantsu Is it possible to bench the 6970 bios with stock 6950 speeds?
allrighty, sold EAH 5970 and just ordered 2 sap 50's, will report how these go.
BTW any info on mem timing diff between 50 and 70?
@Neova
General Downsampling as on Nvidia cards is only possible on 48xx cards and Win XP.
However with Crysis in DX10 DS is possible via the CryEngine 2.
Open the console (^) and type con_restricted 0 and hit ENTER.
After that type r_width "2x your native res" (3840 in my case) and hit Enter.
Type r_height "2x your native res" (2400 in my case) and hit Enter.
Menu gets screwed up but you can just start the game by typing " map island".
hi Im new to the forum but have been lurking for a couple of years :), I did the post on guru about the unlock on the 26th. Ive come accross my own little problem unfortunately but since AB is getting released in a few days Im not to bothered. Whats wrong is Ive just installed a 9800gt for physx duties and now smartdoctor will no longer recognize my ati card, ive tried going into displays etc but its a no go so far, could anyone possibly help with this please, thankyou
You know that Nvidia drivers won't let Physx work on a secondary graphics card if they detect a non-Nvidia card as the primary? I don't know if there are hacked drivers you can get out there, but Nvidia won't let you use Physx on a second card if you have a AMD primary card.
there are physx mods out there, ive been rocking physx on ati systems for a fair while, i just had it out for installation of my 6950, when the 6950 is on its own smartdoctor works but when the nv card as physx is installed it throws a wobbly and says card not found/recognized. its not to much bother tbh il just wait, glad everyones flashes are going well :)
