Additional differentiation would be really nice. Until now, most partners only manged to differentiate the logo :rolleyes:.
The best would be to use some really good coolers on these high end cards (both air and water-blocks), but very few (if any) seams to be willing to go that far. Everybody can OC a cool card.
No, it's more so system integrators can carry on using cheap and nasty PSUs to keep their margins up. If a PSU says it is 850W you'd expect it to run this card OC'd. Think again, I've destroyed dozens of supposed 850W units with GTX275s, 4890s, even 4850s with an aggressive over clock and a couple of hours of full load.Quote:

Sheer speculation on my part but I am guessing that the stock heatsink can't handle the heat on a standard overclock as it is let alone upping the voltage. They are probably trying to avoid unecesary Rma's from people playing with fire literally :)
The stock heatsink can take it, there is no problem. But when you up the voltages you go out of ATX specs, and you could not have a standard retail product do that. A special OC edition...that's a different story I guess :)
FYI, the Sapphire Redline program accomplishes the same thing as the AMD Overvolt Tool.

Regarding the ATX specs...this is not about having problems if you go beyond 300W, I think I definately went far beyond that with 1.3/1.15v 1025/1200 MHz, and had no problems what so ever. That is not the problem. The problem is that when you launch a product you want to stay within the rated specs for that kind of product so you have no problems with regulations, compliance, laws of different countries, bla, bla. So officialy, you do not break any regulations with the stock clocks and volts, the maximum TDP is 294W. However, if a partner like Sapphire, Asus, etc, want to go beyond those specs in order to offer the market a special, spcific product, it is their problem how they manage with the regulations and such. It is just a paper-work issue, not a hardware issue, the hardware can take it :)

OCability != actual overclocking. from what i understand, what they said was something like: if you have the tools and the skills you can get the maximum out of the card, we did not artificially limit it - mainly talking about ccc overdrive limits .. now ask who of the pros is stopped by the ccc limit
the special "oc" features they have are not really special, they are part of the normal design and pr just needed to fill a couple of slides
or would you interpret what they said as "all our other products suck for overclocking" ?
I understand this is probably just marketing, yeah. Pushing the card from 725 to 1000MHz with stock cooler is still pretty impressive IMO.
And in fact do I think they are trying to show that this card is better for OCing than other ones, yep.
Maybe to counter people's disappointment about the stock clocks, or Fermi expectations, who knows...
Well, almost 30% overclocking on High end card (top of the line) it is something rather uncommon, and I really appreciate this card for that.
am i the only one who considered any speed below 850mhz to be classified as underclocked?
I'll bet ATI knew there would be a lot of people who thought this way. That's why they underclocked and binned to stay within the specification - but then they also encourage overclocking. That way they don't have to shoulder the legal responsibility for making a card that exceeds spec and kills weak systems nor when you exceed the specs yourself. That way they get all the good press of "catering to enthusiasts" and being good overclockers without having to take as much responsibility when things go wrong.Quote:

I worked pretty hard with GTX 295 or HD 4870X2....Yeah, the GPU's would sure shine, and they do as long as you give them a little bit of cooler air. But with regular room temps, the GTX 295 stops at one point because the cooling can't keep up. At one point, it can't take that voltage anymore, and it is normal. You can't give it 25% more volts with the stock cooler and normal temps, that's the whole ideea here. The 5970's cooler allows a little bit more headroom on that part. And yes, once you put them under LN2 the things get "back to normal" :)
And no, BBA and retail is not allways the same thing. The "BBA" HD 5870 I have has much more extra parts on it compared to the retail versions. It's no "secret plan" as it overclocks worse then the other cards I have, but it is obviously an earlier sample in the production line.
I noticed that some of the vapor chambers on the 5970 are painted black with copper showing only where the dies touch. But, on some of them copper is visible on the entire surface underneath. Just a small change in production runs I guess

Well the last 850W unit I was testing didn't go bang when I tried it with 3.85GHz i7 and 4870x2/GTX295/285/5870. it just dipped down below 11.4V and politely reset the machine so that's a slight improvement. The same crap with over-current protection. But the number of people who will try (and hopefully fail) to RMA their cards as faulty when this happens to their shiny new system can only hurt their availability and costs, it'll be like the HP i7 fiasco all over again for system integrators that don't do their testing right.Quote:

On ATI's boards memory usage of AA is low, and many time don't use less the whole memory, and in this case, the gpu can easily AA with a very low loss of perf.
I play evry source games with my 5870 on a 24" with evrything maxed out, including AA8x over 100fps and i love this ^^

All 5 series cards can have this problem as unlike the 4 series ( which could could burn out under furmark ) they have a mechanism in place to protect the gpu / vregs from being overstrained.
However as mentioned, quite simply the load furmark can apply is beyond that of any game and AMD simply didn't design these boards/cooling solutions to handle these types of sustained loads. I personally wish they could, but as far as the reference design goes, our hands are tied. Higher performance cooling solutions will certainly help but ideally we will need to see a 5970 with a custom PCB and waterblock to really see them shine ( and not burst into flames and sound like a 737 taxiing in process ) Myself, I won't consider a 5970 running on air.
(the review) What a noob.. he expect a good overclock with that stock cooler? I guess AMD should also have said "You need proper cooling..." as to tell what enthusiast must already know... And wtf about Furmark, everyone knows it puts GPU's in a unrealistic load, it is clocking down as a measure to not fry the card (dumbass) how about he take proper time for a review than throw this at us and tell readers see it as a bad overclocker. In the furmark SS you can see the card clock to 550Mhz as to reach a approx 100celcius, give it a waterblock or something and i really doubt there's gonna be any downclocking.
@grimeleven 5970's stock cooler is very good its max tdp dissipation rate is 400W. The thing is based on vapor tech and thus is an excellent cooler in itself.
Very good is relative, it's a very good cooler for a 5870. For the 5970 it's decent, even anandtech said they couldn't replicate 5870 CF speeds without instability and crashing. So for it's designed task of cooling the 5970 it performs ok.Quote:

How long ago did 5850/5870 launch, and you still don't see any in stock... same for 5970. such a horrible article. they completely forgot that ATI added a feature to prevent the card from killing itself in synthetics like furmark. and somehow never tested to see the total power draw of using such a benchmark. its not hard to plug in a kill-a-watt meter and look at the numbers before and after.
