Hey, GK. You have to match them. Usually, if you're going to lap your CPU then it's a good idea to lap the heatsink/waterblock as well. This way, you ensure that both are flat and will have optimal contact.

To test, take a straight razor and hold it against the base of both your CPU and the HK, and see if you can see any space inbetween the edge of the blade and the base of the heatsink/IHS.

Also, if the MX-3 is anything like the old Arctic Silver, you're not supposed to spread it yourself. Arctic provides specific instructions on how to apply it based on whether you have a dual or quad core. You're supposed to line it up over the cores:

I didn't. This mod decreases flow in HK, I am a bit afraid to do this because I have weaker version of DDC and trying to keep all my loop as less restrictive as possible. But who knows what will be tomorrow :D

They were primed by now, I left them to dry.
And also I've finally applied last black coat to TMS-200 bracket, I've heated it in oven just before painting as kgtiger adviced to me previously and it turned out wonderfully :cool: nice and smooth, I'll show it later once it is dryed.

The thickness you're seeing right now is at room temperature.

Here's some more reading if you're interested. It's long been Arctic's recommendation to use the linear application across the cores. Just be sure that you locate the cores correctly. I don't remember for certain, but I believe the orientation of them can change from one gen to the next.

Excellent work GK, the "Koolance Brass Body" and the bracket look perfect, very neat work. :up:

You will find in most cases but not all, by remove the masking tap when the paint is still slightly wet.
The edges along the tape will soffen out more and will look smoother when dried.
The reall challenge comes in removing the tape, without touching the paint when it's still not quite touch dry. :rolleyes:
Humm I still need more practice with that. :rofl:

As you probably remember TMS-200 bracket doesn't sit perfectly in stock drive bay holes, I am not quite happy with that so I took out my trusted drill and made some new holes :)

I believe it is TARN-X. At least that is what I use. The only problem I have noticed with it is after you use it, the blocks tarnish much quicker next time around.
The first time I had read about people using it was on the Prometheus build. But he was spraying some kind of clear (I think) on the bare copper directly after. It does work really well though. Does anyone remember those commercials on T.V. when the guy dips the silver tarnished spoon in it and it comes out clean.
I don't know......Just a goofy childhood memory. The stuff has been around for at least 40 years though.

Well, I use the stuff called "liquid for metal surface cleaning" it is much cheaper than CILIT (is it known worldwide?), about $1 for 300ml bottle, and gives better results - I did not tested other solutions personally, but guy who I talked to said that this is the best working one. I cleaned GPU block few days ago and it is still clean and shiny.

And it is pretty fast too, no need to sink blocks for the whole night, 5 minutes followed by few sponge strikes and you're done.

Well, it is moving.
I have some new stuff arrived, not everything I have ordered, just a part of it. Postal guys are especially slow this year :down:
Then I am talking to CNC guys to make some parts for me (like window and some other secret parts LOL)

And after all I am doing some more sleeving for 3 days already, just have no time to finish it :shrug:

Just as usual, used USB mdpc-x sleeving and SATA heatshrink, didn't remove the connector

well yeah, I am doing it bit by bit as system assembles to be sure all wires are of proper length. But what you've mentioned above is already done - just nothing interesting to show :D

major part was made with Canon G10, but now it is used by my dad as underwater camera, so recent pictures were made with old Canon Powershot Pro1 with 7.2-50.8mm 1:2.4-3.5 zoom lens (stock one, not sure it can be changed)

Well, now I am kinda in hardware juggling state and I have to keep the intrigue alive (it is pretty evident though :)), nothing depends on me now, all I am gonna do is wait.

High time to finish the sleeving :D I've decided to put the sleeving into the PSU and remake some parts, it is still in progress but I have a picture for you (I am on the laptop with crappy display this days so don't be mad at me for imperfect white balance or brightness)

Very nice that you asked Graeme, thank you. We're fine, were a bit scared that morning and few days after, I even didn't let my GF to go to the job that day, but now everything seems to be pretty normal.

Well, that was not so bad using knife and wire cutter, now I have only 4-pin molex and SATA power unsleeved ;)

yeah, very tight, matter of millimeters. I've already shortened those magic plate standoffs and probably I'll have to do it once again. I'll remove one or two flaps holding the door, as well.

Take the "much" out of there... X58 really doesn't have that much of an advantage over P55... sorta like comparing a 5870 to a 5850.

The only reason - I don't want to buy new waterblock mounts, then paint them and so on. This build already lasts for too long, I want to finish it :D

When it goes to perfomance, I suppose i7 860 and i7 920 are about the same at equal speeds. D0 920 has better average OC though.
