Building a Sossaman rig?

fairly easy dave.

And they do get warm, but i have an 80mm fan on it, and it keeps it in check.

Your right about sammy's tho. They never need restarting unless it does it because of updates. I totally forget i have her up sometimes.

Not true, these are 479 and essentially Yonah laptop chips..VERY different.


Now for my morning;
I just went to pick up the HS.
I got 10 of them.
The first time I was there getting HS the lady that runs the place wasn't there.
She was today and asked what boards we used these in.
I told her where we got them and at what price and she says hold on a sec then comes back with one of the boards in her hands..
From now on we get them from her. $20.00 and no shipping.:up:
She also wants to know about cpu's as she may have them available also and I told her about us getting them at $42.00 a pair so this may play out well.

OH, the board she brought out to show me, she said "keep it"
When she left I handed the $20 to her husband and told him to tell her to use it for lunch.

All in all a very good morning!:up::up::up:

How much did the HSs cost??? $20???

No, the mobo would've cost $20, but he got it for free :D

The HSs were $10 each.

EDIT: my math is failing on me, that's indeed $20 for the sinks.

HS are $10.00 each, $20.00 a pair.
She also has the boards for $20.00 each and thats equal to what Centrix sells them for except from her I can pick them up and NO SHIPPING CHARGES!

There is quite reasonable explanation: My dual clovertown build needs an mobo, mem and second waterblock. And those things cost wayyy more than this sossaman build would cost but since i don't have an job or rich parents, I'd rather get my everyday comp working (yes the dual clover one) and then think about getting other crunchers.

so, roughly 1000 BOINC PPD, only 100w draw for $200. $200 for board, chipset sinks (I think those were the sinks you were talking about) and CPU's.

Yea, it does 3600 100% load 24/7 at under 50C..
I had it up to 4005 for some short benches and someone with more skills could probably get it up well over 4100-4200

To the European guys;
The backplates arrived today so will send the 4 boards, the 8 heatsinks and the two backplates to Jaco on Monday..
If that is not correct, tell me today or tomorrow.

Pics of the HS didn't come out good but you can clearly see the step on the bottom. That step is app 1/8" thick.

Are those backplates suited for dual heatsinks? They look rather big to me. Also, are there any backplates added with the mobo or is it just the motherboard that you got? Not that it would really matter, but my place tends to get dusty after a while.

Those backplates are one plate for each system, yes, 2 HS screw into each plate and as to other backplates do you mean I/O plates?
If so, then no, I have searched and searched and there is no I/O plate made for these. You could make one but thats a pain.

Just out of curiosity, how much would it cost to get a board + 2x CPUs + heatsinks + shipping to Australia? RAM isn't a problem, I can get PC3200 DDR2 EEC for about AU$20-30 for a 512mb stick or ~AU$60 for a 1 gb stick. Would they run better with 4x512mb or 2x1Gb? And I'm assuming that they don't have an IHS, yes?

We've seemed to have skipped spring over here in Aust, so it's gone from cool wet and rainy to 35+ C days in about a week, so I'd be interested in something that runs fairly cool and is cheap, especially if it puts out something close to a stock Q6600 in PPD.

Trancend 1Gb DDR2 PC3200 for AU$63 + shipping. And there are a few others around the AU$60-70 range.

carl: Explained this further back in the thread, the cpu's are the tough part so what you do is grab the rest and wait on a deal on them from ebay,etc..
Here a board is $30.00,HS are $10.00 each(2),memory is $65.00 for 2x1 gig DDR2-400ECC REG

If I was to grab two 1.67 Ghz'ers from ITXchange plus a backplate from wherever sells them (might be able to source that locally, but server stuff seems to be close to non-existent over here :p:) and you were to grab a board and two heatsinks next time you go to oemxs, how much would shipping cost roughly?

Since I'm going to be sending you that package anyway why don't you two get smart, find what you want on either newegg or performance PC's and I'll get it for you. Still one package and save a hell of a lot of money. I also have one extra board here that I can send as I can get more locally.( Read back in the thread)
Remember, just DDR2-400 ECC REG and nothing else. I'd suggest the Kingston 1 gig sticks as I know they work as thats what I used.
I tested a pair of DDR2-533 ECC REG and will not post..

She's not super cable managed, but you can see the yate 140 i screwed right on top.

The problem is that I don't have the cash on hand to buy one right now. Uni holidays start next week, so I should be able to work 4-5 days a week, but until then (say 2-3 weeks from now) I wouldn't be able to pay for it.

hey Mr. NaeKuh sir, those MicroCool mosfet sinks on the sossy mobo - u still got them on there? any chance u can get a close up of them - I would like to see how they sit... i'm guessing u placed the sinks, so that the mosfets themselves are *not* directly in the centre? - are the sinks covering those other 3/6 black lil thingys next to the mosfets?

Can you get away with a U1 rackmount for these, or would I be looking for at least a U2? If I can find a cheap enough rack-mount case, I'd probably do that route as opposed to something like an Antec Titan (which I've seen for as low as AU$100, which is pretty good for an eATX tower :p:).

yep, iirc, they'll easily fit in a 1U... the HS that u'll be getting are made for it anyway :up:

It's a pitty U1 and U2 cases are so freaking hard to find, though. Hmm, I might be able to mod the JayCar rackmount enclosure to take an eATX board...

Yep, from my understanding one backplate has two sets of mounting holes, so it'll do both HSF's.

Dave, I'm a little confused on the backplates. Do I need to get my own one or is are you going to send one to me?

Just one backplate per machine.
Each backplate has 8 standoffs to cover the 2 Heatsinks.
I am sending two of them with the 4 board and Jaco already has two backplates, the SKT159's from Supermicro, same but look a tad different so thats 4 backplates that will be in Europe for 4 boards.. Understood now?:D

well the main concern was the dead spot on the fan.

As you can see the dead spot is nowhere near the middle of the sink. That solution i feel is THE BEST for our sammys. Unless your going h2o. :wasntme:

actually it does get hot. Both my sinks have some form of fan on it. The top one uses a 80mm, the bottom one has the lianli 120mm blow out on the side.

Actually no, I had 4 packages set to mail last Monday. Yours,one to Naekuh, one to MysticMerlin and the package of boards,etc to jaco.
I have them all inside the front door here, grab them and then realise I forgot to include 2 cpu's and 3 tubes of TIM so I let that package here because it was 4pm and I was pushing time for the PO.
The big package headed to Jaco Wednesday.

I like that setup with the 140mm fan myself.. and yes, the NB and SB do get hot but a tiny chipset fan will cool them..

You do nice work, no question there.
Another option that will effectively cool the two heatsinks is a 120mm to 80mm plastic adapter with the 120mm side on the HS in a diamond pattern
Then a cheapo 80mm fan will cool both HS and with the overhang of the adapter on the left and right sides will also cool the mofsets and NB

I looked at that board but the cheapest I could find it in the US was $339.00
It also uses a tiny heatsink different from the ones used in the pictures above.
Should be a good board and good luck to you grabbing that cheap!:up:

2 models of the sossaman board from SM and they are essentially the same.
One has onboard SCSI I think..Very alike but the SM board and the Tyan boards for the sossamans use those tiny HS that newegg shows for sossamans. They look like NB chipset sinks they are so small.
