Turned voltage down a tad to 1.45v load, 1.14v idle and now am at these clocks 100% stable :)

Holy cow gurusan. You should try over clocking the pci-e bus some. With that much raw computational power. I bet games would respond to the slightly wider bus.
The PCI-E bus is at 120mhz. I've read that overclocking it too much can cause hard drive corruption? Not something I need as I have important stuff on here.
I am not having any luck clocking these cards, i think I got a couple of duds, or i dont know what I am doing wrong....
i am happy with them at stock anyway.
What have you tried? With the accelero s1 you should be able to do some nice clocking.
i cant even OC much in overdrive without artifacts, i have tried different modded bios with 1.4v, made my own and tried a couple I got here, i got artifacts at 675/1050 with 1.4v, not sure the voltage was changed though. my temps are great mid 50's tops
that's odd.
Don't know what to say really :/
gurusan, if i want to overclock with your bios, the one you moded, all i change is whatever thats at 720 to whatever i like??
^ yes :)
I tried the vmod where you shade in the resistor, no luck for me, i dont think it worked, how much do i have to shade in?????
do you have a dmm? you NEED a dmm to know what you are doing
gurusan, with the 900Mhz overclock, is that thru bios editing only? for the voltage.
no i did a pencil mod too
Crysis benchmark on Vista x64 and E8400 @ 4.5Ghz ~ 3DMark'06 is 21540
wow very nice.
Try Dx10 very high noaa noaf now please
wow those are amazing results. Especially the 16x AA !!!!!
I've just ordered a q6600 + P5Q deluxe so we'll see if that helps me at all :)
by god, that's almost playable Crysis!! :p:
Because most onboard SATA controllers are connected to the PCIe bus, you're also overclocking the SATA bus. It differs from mobo to mobo, but on my DFI DK P35 for example, 115MHz is the max for the SATA bus. Go any higher and you get curruption, especially with Raid configs
awesome results guys, great to see "the little card that could" kicking arse and taking names, these things are nice.
So an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 + wire ties + yate = win !
Do you think these http://www.svc.com/gt-ram-kit.html combined with the sinks from the s1 kit will be enough to cover the pwm area.
there is lots of room there so I guess yes but I don't use the cooler you mention so Ican't say for sure. mine has a few old Zalman blue VGA sinks and never gets very hot. Ram is naked btw I like my ram like my ladies naked all the time. the chips feel very cool and my clocks seem better without the factory cooler which covered them.
gurusan. i just flashed your bios. all went well. problem is however that i cant turn off that frigin overdrive in CCC. i click apply and it just enables itself again. any idea on this problem?
srry if it was allready asked.
edit1: well bios sucks for me :( arti's all over the place. dont realy understand since temp stays at like 65°. i can imagine the core being more oc'able on one card other than mine but the mem should be around the same, no?
@gurusan....
so u were actually 950 stable at under 1.5v?
i have to put 1.52v(load) for even 910mhz... :(
Whats the max safe voltage for the ram?
I'm at 2.2. Thinking it's a bit overkill though looking at Guru results...
any visiontek ppl on here?
my stock voltage overclocks suck 675/1060. seems like every other vendor does 700/1100 + right out of the box.
btw whats the default 3d voltage?
Gah, wish I knew why my Crysis is jacked up, I'm getting worse numbers when doing 4850 CF than if I disable CF. COD4 is fine though, getting twice the FPS my 8800GTX did.
the s1 rev2 ramsinks are the only thing you can use out of it, there's no pwm sinks that work, that thermalright sink set will be perfect for one card though.
Thats basically what i used left over thermalrights and some others I had laying around. I would grab 2 sets of spared though.
Thanks for the input guys. I agree you can never have enought ramsinks around. So two pwm sets it is.
On the subject of vram I bet the stock heatsink does heat that stuff up a good bit, but you get 8 litte ramsinks free with the s1. So I figure why not cover them.
Now these cards are pretty much built on the same 55nm process as the 3850 and 3870. So the chips should be able to tollerate similar voltages 24/7. Anyone have a volt modded 38xx series card still chugging away? If so how many volts were you applying. I still miss my 2900pro in that regard man she loved volts
i put about 1.45v through my 3850 every day since december 07 with no problems. SHe's for sale now too
The bios might have given you a little voltage boost. 1.16 -~> 1.21. I have a running theroy that this voltage was ment for overdrive but just doesnt work correctly on some bios. The only way you are going to find out is with a dmm. What I did was connected some test clips to the vgpu point and ground, and have the dmm sitting right on the table next to me.
The pwm on these cards doesnt seem that bad really. Under load my drop never exceeds .015v. I have no way of telling how clean the output is, but if a cap mod diden't allow for a higher oc we can assume its clean enought.
Which caps would we go about replacing?
wow so we can flash with other vender's bios's?
how come in the details both bios's say the same voltage.
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/1...12.080605.html
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/1...12.080523.html
All 4850's so far are reference design and made by Sapphire AFIAK. so bios's are interchangable as long as memory type and brand are the same.
just as all CPU's have a range of VID values so do GPU's, not all chips demand the same voltage to remain stable. I measured my cards with a mm, the first goes to 1.21v under load, the second goes to only 1.16v under the same conditions.
just look at the caps and then u can make your decision... and i didn't replace caps i just added on the back.... the 2.5v uf820..
@xmoA
that is not why at all... i tossed a loop on mine and it didn't get an higher oc then my s1.. same with my 3850... only way i could get passed 1039mhz was to toss my water chiller on it.. they are not hot chips.. :yepp:
Just flashed my visiontek with the msi bios that was provided a few pages back. Everything works great except the 2d clocks. its staying at full blast.
my visiontek with just the bios modded does 750/1150 stable. my cousin also has one and his does 740/1150 as well. Maybe we just got lucky on the cards we got.
i might try to do a pencil mod for the vgpu so that i can try to hit around 850 if possible, that would be sweet.
One thing to consider is what people consider stable. I'm able to push my VisionTek cards pretty high on stock voltage but it's only until I leave FurMark running that they will blow up. Games, 3DMark, etc. are all fine. Want to check stability? Fire up FurMark, set it to 1920x1200 full screen, and let it run awhile. :)
Please can someone post a pix of his HD 4870 or 4850 underwater and which blocks will fit them. I have a mcw60 already or do i need to buy another waterblock for this card.
gpu-z sensors dont work right for me after my guru flash. gpu load stats at 0 and the clocks stay at 1 number unless i reopen it.
fan speed also is stuck at around 40-50% but i know by listening to it that the fan is pretty much full blast.
EDIT NM it jsut started working lol i have no idea why. owell.
my own visiontek modded bios.
i stopped using furmark after having it blow my volt modded 8800gt out on me, and it was only at like 1.4 volts. happened to a few other people as well so i just stay away from it. if it runs everything i need it to, and rthdribl runs without artifiacts, then i really don't care what it does under furmark.
this is just some stuff from the 8800gt volt mod thread with some people have the fur bench kill their cards

other weird thin is going on though. my secondary screen is flashing like crazy when in 3D modus.
Thats good news, thanks gurusan and DemonEyez for the info, am still scared about the stories flying around about dead cards but i will be getting a Gainward HD 4870 by next week. What type of ram heatsinks are you guy using or how are you cooling the mem chips?
gurusan is there anyway way you could make a bios for me wich has the clocks of a normal 4850 (including powerplay off course) and the fan settings of your modded bios?
problems i have with your bios:
flashing secundary screen
artifacts all over da place :(
cant disable overdrive (but thats prolly not because of your bios....)
if you could do this i'll send you a belgian beer ^^
wel seems to me like i have a bad card. even with the stock non-powerplay enabled bios i get artifacts in furmark from time to time. card does 90° with stock bios.
I'm using swiftech ram sinks on the chips and the vregs. Also got a 80mm pointed at them:
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4563/naaktnv0.jpg
I'm experiencing a problem. Sometimes my screen will just go black and the system hangs, sometimes it gives me a BSOD of some atidag file.
It's totally random, most of the time during browsing in internet explorer.
this happens with 1.32v on the core doing 820MHz which is totally stable (passes 3dmark, crysis and atitool 10 minutes). any ideas? I get the idea it happens when the card is switching from low 2d to high 3D and the other way round.
wel seemingly i have a real bad sample to oc. anything higher then 1013MHz on the memory gives me arti's in furmark.
is this realy only because of the voltage it gets? or just bad ram?
don't know, what cooling are you using. the stock cooler really gets the ram warm. mine seems better since going to water. i'm finding not much performance over 1100. also you might note that the clocks on the ram scale by 25mhz jumps so try to keep to groups of 25 like 1100, 1125,1150 etc.
I just edited my bios so that the lowest state isn't 160/500 anymore but raised them to 500/750, just like the medium state. So far i'm not experiencing any lock-ups.
wehehe, I stopped watching the EK after Holland had its ass kicked by Russians. :shakes:
Damn those Russians , now I had to remove all of my orange decorations :D
yeah i recon it does get the ram chips hot. like you said, i am still on stock cooling. i personaly think it is kinda weird that small heatsinks keep te ram chips cooler than the stock one. does any of you know this:
is the accelero in combination with the ram heatsinks it delivers enough for th e ram to keep cool?
and
does the accelero deliver enough heatsinks to cover all the vital parts on the card?
Damn we lost to spain Shiii....TTTTT!!!!!!!!! All the same thanks for the info. Am full with vodka damn i need to hitīmy bed.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:: mad::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::ups et::upset:
Dead 4870's problem solved: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/152
What do you guys have to cool your VRM area? mine is scorching hot under load.
I've tried stock cooling and I've tried some of those thermalright ram/pwm sinks on them and they get too hot to touch under load. Im using the 720/1100 msi (with added 0.05v) bios.
i am using some spare ramsinks and have a 92mm fan blowing across the card.
I'm using the heatsinks that came with my S1.
I do have 2 sets of low profile Enzotech sinks coming in though.
My card is kinda ghetto'd atm. =P
How come overdrive gets disabled once you overclock within in the bios????
anyone have the bios for maximum core without pencil mods?
alsa can i hit 800 without pencil mods?
and can i change vcore with RBE without pencil mods?
please help i would like to hit 800 :D:D:D
lol i have 2 monitors too but i figured it out.
i unlock the states .
and use 7 , 8, 9 along with the other states that are already used.
7 for 2d 8 isnt important and 9 for 3d .
this fixed it for me. when you save the bios and reopen to look at it it will be greyed out and the clocks are not the same as what you saved it as but it works and reads fine
might sound confusing but if anyone needs picture help i can provide.
There is reason for this. It took me poking around with a DMM and Rattle flashing his card like nuts.
We both have Visiontek cards. Mine clocks to 700/1100 just fine, however his barely touches 650/1050. I've been considering pencil modding mine tonight just for fun as well as poking around with my DMM...found something strange. I noticed other people posting voltages such as Idle: 1.10vGPU & Load: 1.15vGPU...I was getting 1.05vGPU // 1.10vGPU respectively. Now surely 0.05v isn't that much, but it's enough to get those few more mhz stable. Rattle had flashed to the MSI BIOS and can magically get his card to run 700mhz, 685mhz stable VS. the Visiontek (BBA) BIOS which couldn't do that. I decided to flash mine to MSI as well and well guess what? The voltage is different. Idle: 1.07vGPU & Load 1.14vGPU on the MSI BIOS. So there you have it if your Visiontek card clocks lower than other branded cards...check your vGPU's.
@ Gurusan.
Aren't you worried that putting 1.5v on the core will give too much stress on the card's VRM's?
I mean, look at the power circuitry on the HD4870, that's much more elaborate, or is that mainly for the GDDR5 chips?
Can't imagine that, because GDDR5 operates at lower voltages that GDDR3, right?
the vrms get hot but i have a 92mm fan blowing over them...they seem to be doing ok.
Same here, was just wondering. (Lost a 7900 GT and a 8800 GT due to poorly umplemented vrm's, so i'm a bit causious)
I've suggest this before, look up the vrm part number, buy double and add them in parallel; it will drop the load in half for each vrm.
hmmm now there's a interessting idea :) Has this already been performed by someone? And would the components in green be the ones that need to be doubled:
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9085/vrmdi5.jpg
the easier way is probably to buy a bigass lab psu and hook up its output directly to vddc
Received cards this weekend, doing the stock review today I believe and then slapping AC-S1's onto the cores
Gurusan / Jamesbong, others with vmodded 4850s - whats the highest core you can get to while passing ATITool Artifact test?
925 core passes Vantage and 06' fine, but gives me 1 pixel wrong on ATITool. This was at 1.55v, havn't tried any higher. ATITool seems to be happy with 875/1000 with 1.46v though.
Havn't read through this whole thread, seems mostly about 4850's though so far. Any word of how much, if any, better the 4870's are clocking in comparison?
does anybody know, what does the 3 different temperatures mean?
GPU1, GPU2, GPU3?
watercooling on the GPU, small zalman ram heatsinks on the rams, and on the vrm. + 80mm fan
rthdribl load: GPU-Z Temperatures: 33 °C, 41 °C, 34 °C
idle: 33, 38, 33
700/1125 Mhz, without any vmod.
highest core i can go for atitool completely 100 percent arti free.. 910mhz... i start to get arties anything after that... but only in 05 canyon flight and 01 nature.
@demoneyes
the 3850 is almost identical to these. pwm wise... i pounded over 1.6v into my 3850 for over a half year. still alive still doing same clocks as the day i modded her.
highest core i got to was 920mhz on 1.48v 100% artifact free. So was 910 on 1.45v. Currently back to jsut a basically stock bios flash though (1.2v 750/1100).
so what is the lowest possible setting for 2d and 3d vcore measured that you can set in the bios, measurable on the dmm?
Looks like we are all hitting the same wall just about. A hair less than 925MHz artifact free. 1GHz was hit, but that was on DICE by Hazzan, but obviously not for 24/7 usage.
Think we are hitting the limitation of the chip, or maybe the power circuitry? I guess we'll find out when 4870 vmods come out and users start modding their cards. If they can break this 900-925MHz wall while being completely artifact free, its either better binned chips, or power circuitry advantage
seems that tomorrow there will be tool to overclock to 950mhz
http://www.techpowerup.com/64301/Dia...k_Edition.html
no need bios mod anymore :P
Yes but only for 4870.
new winflash is rdy for download it seems
