the reason its cut in half is that he has 2x as much ram , and afaik , it uses about 1/4 of the ram you have, 23% of yours and 23% of his.

Yup... Its very similar to Vista itself.
32-bit uses a little less at roughly 22-25% of ram and 64-bit uses 25-30% on bootup. My friend has 64-bit and 2gigs of ram and he sits around 26% usage after full bootup, and I have 4gigs of ram and I sit around 29% full usage after bootup.
Windows utilizes the resources it has, and the ram takes less power than going back and forth between the HDD's since the ram has to be powered all the time anyways. If it could I'd tell it to keep such and such programs in ram and use even more of it.

for those with asus wifi make sure to dl the server 2003 x64 bit wifi drivers from asus.
I Know this is petty late in the thread to ask, but how are you guys getting server 2008? Sorry for such a n00b question.
I don't want to pay the 1000+ price tag for it. I have messed w/ sever 2003 and loved it over xp. The stability rocks.
this is fun. I got 2008 Activated and configured to boot straight to the desktop, got Aero working, Ac1 Barracuda is working! now i need plug n play devices to work like 1394 extrernal drive..etc. and ready to roll. it only took me 2 days to get my wireless lan and audio working but it was worth it. I love this os
Legit activation? If not, please PM me.
I gotz meya legit "1yr" copy from MS directly  Server 2k8, and Vista Ultimate (32bit)
We will see what happens in a year, supposedly it will just keep running.
Just got mine as well from the launch event here in Seattle. It was my understanding we'd be getting full versions of windows server 2008 as well as a 1 year version of windows vista ultimate 32bit.
I'm curious if the key that i got for windows vista 32bit will work with the 64bit version as well. Anybody tried that yet with your 'promotional' copy of vista 32bit from the 'Hero's happen Here'(<-stupid theme) launch?

Did anyone install Core?
I just got done messing with it today.
I got XOrg running, but nVIDIA drivers were a mess, and then I wanted the latest kernel, and I didn't know how to use the bzImage for GRUB.
Then, Xfce4 looked so ugly because I wasn't using Xfwm4, but I didn't know how to make Xorg use it.
Here's what you do. Right after you install do:
Then, use this site to install your nvidia drivers http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/11...-debian-lenny/. But, you should download the latest version from the nvidia website which will require a little bit of editing to that tutorial.Code:su -
apt-get install xserver-xorg xfce4 xfce4-goodies
What if I wanted to compile my own 2.6.24.4 kernel?
Here is my perfect Linux distrobution.
I did exactly that, except I grabbed the sudo package aswell.Quote:

If I could get Xfce4 to work, without looking disgusting, it would be the perfect operating system.
It took me like, an hour to configure everything.
I still had problems though, like AHCI, IDE, ICH9R, all that.
I did all of the tests on fresh installs with my backup disk far away out of the system.

NewEgg does not sell the high end Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 anymore?
I was going to search their specifications to find out what controller I used (turned out to be ICH9R), but it isn't on the site anymore.
The "high-end" discontinued board that won't let me do 4.0GHz with a Q6700. :(
You guys who have had experience with vista with SP1 and server 2008 do you still think server is faster for games even after vista sp1?
This is going to sound stupid, but can you use Vista 32 bit drivers with Server 08 even though its a 64bit OS? My laptop manufacture doesn't make 64bit vista drivers. I doubt you can, but I figured I would ask.
Thanks!
Windows Server 08 is not only a 64 bit version, it has a 32 bit version too. You can use Vista 32 drivers for Windows Server 08 32 bit or you can use Vista 64 drivers for Windows Server 08 64 bit. It is up to you to choose the best OS for your daily usage..

people still debating which is faster? their the same kernel
A sloths faster than vista
Then why can't vista 32bit SP1 support 8gb of ram?
Server class windows OS has supported PAE for ALONG time while non server OS never has. Hence when 32bit windows server 2008 handles 8gbytes of ram and vista 32bit dosen't.

Anyone thinking that 2k8 is going to be faster in 3D is kinda silly.
The major difference in terms of speed between a server OS and a non-server OS is going to be I/O operations. More specifically I find that 2k8 can handle a much bigger load across memory, cpu, harddrives and still remain responsive (and processing your data). With this comes some more stability, but I only have very anecdotal evidence.
Thanks for your work bakalu. I use to have hope for vista but not anymore. Looks like my hopes for server 2008 have been dashed also. Long live Windows XP SP3.
After doing some testing myself, running around with the best Linux distributions you can find, and even running Mac OS X on my PC, Windows XP is the obvious choice.
I feel like I should make a blog about.
Kind of off-topic, but how do Media Center and Windows XP relate, performance wise?
