I would just use plain old white heatsink goo... I did on one of my old drives mounted in a heatsink type cooler, it worked perfect and actually cleaned off fairly easily afterwards.

Its been a while since I updated my progress on Goliath. I've been working on the system...but things did not go as planned. :( I had to redesign the layout of the components in the cooling chamber and it has been frustrating to make everything fit as I wanted. I've reassembled everything in the cooling chamber and added a few more goodies to make it look clean. I think it will function better and it looks better than my original layout.

Nice build and good to see your still working on it. I don't quite understand the layout of the MB tray at this time. It was my understanding that the shroud on the right was for the wires.
The wire loom on the top right hand corner is for the wires to enter from the power supply outside the cooling chamber. The wires will be sealed between the double walls of the chamber and the outside cover will add additional seal from the outside. As far as the MB tray layout question....I'm not sure what is not understood. The MB tray will function as any other MB tray in a case.

What are the internal designs of the water blocks? What mobo, and cards are you using them on? Have you thought about NB cooling?
The flex lines should help support the blocks. If the weight is still a problem... I will build a bracket for added support.
The internal design of the blocks are shown in the beginning of the thread...I call them the CrossFlow block. I don't think it will be necessary to liquid cool the NB, because the low temps inside the cooling chamber will cool the NB and ram with circulating air inside the chamber.
As far as the mobo and cards, I will be testing the system will the following components until I upgrade to Intel system.

I always want to build one of these but then I realize what actually goes into them and suddenly air cooling dosnt seem all that bad. I guess I'll just figure out a way to cool a computer with bacteria or enzymes...

Thanks guys! I'll be updating the pictures soon. I've been testing the liquid loop with the pump and I was surprised that I had a leak in one of the brazed fittings. :shakes: It was a major set back to remove all the liquid components and rebraze the fitting. The pump maintains great pressure and flow through the blocks, so I think it will be the right choice for this build. I've had a few set backs, but I think it will start coming together once I get through the testing phase of the components.
This is the biggest most awesome computer case ever!!

I'm now leak free with the liquid loop and thought I would share a few pics. I'm sorry for the slow progress, but when everthing is custom made....theres always potential problems that comes up during testing. You may notice the GPU blocks have changed from my last post. The other design did not work out. I have a few more things to do in the cooling chamber and then I will move on to piping the compressors. I hope to start cooling the chamber and liquid soon.:D

What are you planning on using as a collant for the loops? I remember you saying something about a goal of -40c, but I don't know off the top of my head what will go that cold.
Given what all he's using I would think either pure denatured alcohol or alcohol/antifreeze mix. I would use atleast 10-12oz of antifreeze if it was mine, just to keep the pump lubricated and keep corrosion to a minimum. I know galvanic corrosion shouldn't be a problem in alcohol only loops but, alcohol likes to absorb water and I know I don't have the equipment to gaurintee a hermedic seal.

Time for a update on the progress of the project. Everything is going slow, but moving forward. I added a few more covers for the stainless lines and wires in the cooling chamber to clean it up a little. Also, completed the tubing and pressure test for the liquid cooling compressor system. I will start evacuation and charging the compressor system next week. Hope to see low temps soon! :D

What kind of TXV is that? I thought they had 3 parts... that bulb that goes on the suction side, the input from the highside, and then output to the evap.
Whats with the tube connecting the TXV to the suction side?
Its not much difference than internal equalizer, except the only difference I found was the external equalizer is not affected by pressure drop across the evaporator. Thought I would use this type, since it is on a water chiller. I will use internal equalizer TXV on the cooling chamber evaporator.
Ah, so the refrigerant flow is metered not only by the temperature of the suction, but the pressure of the suction side. Don't see how that would make much difference than the more simple TXV... must've been a bored HVAC/R engineer that designed that... :rolleyes:

Update time again. Well, I've finished charging the system and I've run some test, but I'm not pleased with temps for the liquid loop. I think the system is not tuned correctly and I need advice from the more experienced builders of what might be the problem.
Temps at the inlet of the plate heat exchanger is -32C.

I just can't figure out why the liquid temps will not go lower. I know insulating would help, but I'm only cooling one gallon of coolant and it doesn't even have a load on the system. :shakes:
By the way, I'm using R507 refrigerant....does the pressures look correct to you guys?
Looks like it's undercharged to me, or the txv is undersized. You said -32C evap inlet, and I see an uninsulated and sweating suction line where the bulb is attached, so that line is lower than dew point, higher than 0C. Superheat must be between 32C and 52C, in any case way too much!
If the txv is sized correctly for the load, add charge until you get a reasonable superheat in the range of 3C to 10C.
What Refrigerant are u using R22 or R134a. If it is R22, it looks undercharged as the high side pressure is a little low. I see you dont have a receiver for your TXV. Is the sight glass filled with liquid or do you see a mix.
He's using R507a. I would say undercharged, but I don't know much about phase.
Yep agreed on undercharged, also what sorta load is that pump providing? Insulate up first since your system will see different loads that way, add more refrigerant, and make sure your TXV is sized right.
Wait, is your low and high side pressures different when system is off?
I added more liquid refrigerant on the high side until it would not take anymore, the superheat only got to 16.9C. and the suction line stop sweating. The TXV is a Sporlan FSE-1/2-ZP and my compressor 1/2HP, so I think the TXV is sized correctly.

You added to the high side? You must mean with the system not running :eek: ?
The proper way to charge is to add to the low side with the system running until you 1st get the superheat under control, 2nd get the subcool that you want.
Pressures when the system is off are not important with a system like this. The system will be what I would consider "normal" with enough charge to be saturated when off. Thus the high and low side readings are the saturation pressures for the temperatures present. They will eventually come to equilibrium at the saturation pressure of the coldest point (unless your txv is really sealing off well). So you take a look at the gauges somewhere in that process...it tells you nothing except how cold the evap is at that moment.
I looked through the thread, and can't find the model Tecumseh you are using, but I agree that your txv isn't undersized (can't tell if it's sized right).
Yes, I added liquid charge on high side when the compressor was off. :yepp: and added vapor charge to low side when the system is running. The suction pressure continues to raise to about 20 PSI and the high side starts to drop. When the system is off, the suction pressure continues to rise to about 90 PSI and the compressor is hard to start.
The compressor model is AJA2419YXA.
Good News! Thanks DetroitAC and noob for the advice. I was way undercharged on the system. I'm starting to see good results with the cooling now. I need to insulate and apply heat load to fine tune the system. Also, think I will start on completing the cooling chamber system, so I can tune both systems in the normal operating stage.

For a second there I thought the frost pic had the window on. Until I saw the wires leading out.
Have you check what the base ambient air temperature is inside the chill-box?

correct me if I'm wrong sweeper, but you've got a temperature of 4.1C after the bulb? That's not the same as a superheat, unless you're using a T1-T2 function on the TC reader (doesn't look like it based on the LCD). Based on your gauge reading, I'd say you still have 20~30C superheat. You should keep adding charge until you get subcooling (got a sight glass?)
Your compressor will be hard to start with R507 because it's an R134a compressor AJA2419YXA. Y=R134a code, Z=R507 code
R134a uses a lot more compressor displacement per motor power than R507 does. In the case of that compressor, Tecumseh makes the same compressor for R507 AJA2419ZXA, and my guess is it has the same compressor parts with a (more powerful) motor more suited to R507.
Yes, 4.1C was after the bulb and I was using T1 function. I also have a sight glass and its almost filled solid, except for a little circulation. I agree it could use more refrigerant, but I think I should wait to add more refrigerant once I get the cooling chamber system operation with heat load to tune both systems without overcharging. The gauges are within 10 psi of being even pressure and the compressor starts fine now. I'm in the process of insulating and its real pain, because I didn't allow enough clearance between the lines.
If this compressor fails to do the job....I have a back up plan to use a low temp 1 HP compressor made for R507. I also have a low temp 2 HP compressor, but I'm sure this monster would be overkill. :D

Very nice, really need a lip or something though around the outside though for a mounting plate to sit on. Would that be possible? Probably 3/4" lip area height wise, maybe half the thickness there? I gotta figure out a holesaw size or something though to make a matching hole for the mounting plates.
I thought the 1 1/2" evaporator would insert through the hole and have a lock ring at the base. Then, insulation between the evaporator and the inside of the muff. PM me on the total length of the evaporator and I will make you mounting plate and a muff to fit.
Hey PM feature wont pull up under your name.
The 1.5" evap goes in the hole and lock rings, so then Muff sits on the ring around the evap, insulation between evap and muff, heights not a matter on the Muff really. Then a mounting plate needs to sit onto the Muff and be able to freely spin basically, mounting plate will be universal and I have a cheap material thats plastic picked out that I can get cut into any rectangle/square and rounded off rather cheaply, then just have to do the mounting hole to fit around the lip there :)
Just use a lathe to trim a small quantity of material from the outside of that muff like the old Chilly1 mount. God that mount kicked ass, melted my last one a few months back :(
