Conductive pen would be way too conductive! I used a 2B pencil this morning took me 17.8s (timed) and I went from (1.55v set) 1.48 to 1.53 and no variation under load.

Haha, maybe I'll just have to open my case and do the mod as well... ;)
Hmm got this problem yesterday when i tried to flash to 504...
my bios went corrupt, or it works, but its all f-up at boot, it takes 30 mins to just go get into ez flash again, and i cant fit the ROM on a floppy anymore couse its 2MB... and USB do work, but it doesnt find any rom on it...
why have this happend? dont get it ...
NB IHS go away

we assumed that the contact resistance of the pencil was negligible.
just what this says!

some issue whit the heatpipes of the cooler ?
I think I will need to start my own thread for the P5E3 Deluxe Wi-Fi.
My former question wasn't taken into consideration. No hard feelings :)
But I sincerely think that this official thread has been somehow mixed with the Maximus Formula, the P5E3, P5E3 Deluxe and P5E3, which I think have some similarities but definetely different flavors. And I need specifics.
I really want to concentrate into BIOS settings of the P5E3 boards. And so far I haven't found any info on it, except Vdroop modes and LLC.
I remember what a gread thread was the P5W DH thread in this forum, it has about 300 hundred pages of information.
So with the permission of the mods I will start my own thread and no disrispects or hard feelings, I'm just looking for specific innformation on Express Gate problems and I haven't found answers so far.
Could someone with an E6600 or similiar that can get stable above 3.6ghz please give me all their settings? 3.6Ghz stable for 2 hrs for me and 3.7ghz not a hope (less than 2 minutes) I used to be able to orthos at 3.8ghz on my old board but on this one I can super pi 32m but anything dualcore= instant crash. Any ideas? Oh, i also can't run my ram (4 diff sticks PC6400 ballistix) at cas3 at all.
you need to update your signature so everyone knows what board, memory, heatsink and so forth.
Sorry, will be done by the time you read this.
So any ideas?
Tried every ratio and strap there... They will work for 412X8 but not 412x9 so it doesn't seem to be ram related. (and my rams can run 1200+ anyway) Have also tried 5-5-5-12 42 and 2t (that's exactly what I'm using act.)
Using 1.55 vcore set to give me 1.525 in windows under idle and load. Vdimm is 2.0-2.3v (doesn't seem to make a diff) I have also tried vcore up to 1.75v...
ok...try only one stick of memory in every dimm slot...see what happens.
Will do.... Just Dling aquamark first.
Edit: Ok, fails in all slots with all sticks. at One core on it's own passes orthos but two toghether= instant fail. Cpu dead?
ok just found a bug with the p5e bios, not sure if all bios revisions will have this , i think mine is 201. anyway my pc would work fine and then the next day my overclock (i thought) became unstable and wouldnt let me into windows xp or vista.
i could here this spinning which i thought was one of my hard drives trying to access data. well i was sort of right. if you have a disc in your dvd drive the bios for some reason starts to search for info from it. constantly spinning up and obviously failing as its accessing the wrong drive.
this is a really wierd one as i have never seen this kind of problem before or had a bios ignore my settings this way. i got my ear close to the pc and realised it was the dvd drive spinning up so i took out the W.I.Conflict disc and it booted up no problems.
i've had this issue every morning if i ran my ram above 1000mhz. but with disk out the problem is gone. hope this helps anyone else having similar issues booting up in a morning.
by the way my boot time into vista is usually 15 seconds....from bios to user selection screen.
are you sure your water system is functioning properly?...how's the temps doing when you orthos?
what kind of thermal paste do you use on the cpu IHS?
if all is normal then the board would be the suspect...BUT...it is working but you are just getting a lower overclock.
Hello all on Xs.
Can any one tell me which air coolers will fit on the P5E motherboard? whitout any modding on the pre-installed coolersystem? :)
best regards.
dMITIj
Ps. sorry for my bad english.
I have the same exact thing happened to me on the P5E3 deluxe. For some reason I could run my Q6000 @ 3GHz and mem @ 1333MHz. Then suddenly by rebooting the computer, it doesn't post anymore and then gives me an overclocking error. Ridiculous!!
It happens randomnly, but now that you mention the presence of a CD ROM drive, that might be the reason that triggers " this BIOS amnesia" good finding.
I'm going to try this if this ever happens again on my rig.!
the thing is i've tried everything to get rid of the issue but eventually the board will let you boot but only after upping vcore and nb voltages, but then of course the problem returns.
so first thing i did was lower all my voltages back to my original findings which impressed me so much when i got the board. i'm prime stable @3.6@1.38vcore real, with mem@ 1004mhz 4.4.4.12 with 2.2v. NB at 1.41v.
with this info in hand i'll be pushing my memory and experimenting with the differant nb straps.....
i'm sure this won't just be happening to me......
Ahh got board in sign, also got problems, and i gotta test lower voltage, maybe thats the cure?? we are used to push high voltage to push it, now its diffrent...
Bios 0303 for Asus P5E X38 is available on Asus FTP
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so...5E/P5E0303.zip
i dont know, found this bios only on FTP. cant test it (have no P5E)
I´ll test it as soon as I finish my new WC setup. I will lap my E6600 too.
purecain can you give us some preliminary results?
 This I'm not positive about...I posted about it months ago in the WC section... MY temps at 3.6ghz when I first got my E6600 were 48c load MAX and now a couple months later they're at 60+ load (but idle temps are more scary...over 40c)
I tried with Artic Silver and ceramique..
I ripped apart the whole loop twice and I couldn't see anything wrong. My gpu temps are still ok so it's not pump or radiator..That would leave cpu block; so i swapped apogee for storm and got the same results.. I think either the cpu is majorly dying, or It got dented and needs to be lapped what do you think?
Thanks for helping me out on this btw!
New bios! I'll definitely test it later tonight. Maybe the LLC will finally work!
:D Some of U asked for - here is a working download link to BIOS 0201:
http://www.xfastest.com/viewthread.p...a=page%3D3
BTW, maybe someone here can help me.....:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&highlight=P5E
:welcome:
Well, the LLC still doesn't work with the new bios. Too bad, that was what I was really waiting for... :(
 Maybe someone here with similar P5E problems.....:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...36#post2528236
gonna take the pics for you now m8......(in the morning with new bios m8)
oh just read the post about the new bios.... will flash and test tommorow but i've been building and overclocking customers rigs all day.... i'm worn out..... tommorow morning i'm free so will definatly test it out for you.....
Maybe it is this? >>>dunno, just caught my eye... and it seems logical to me. ;)Quote:

2. Update EIST control code
3. Enhance PCIE card compatibility
hmmm it says nothing about any fixes.... gonna try it now...
ok its given me more memory options but every single perameter seems to of changed. everything needs to be reconfigered bit by bit untill i can see whats affecting what. atm i'm still trying to get my original 3.6gig and 1003mhz mem stable. maybe then i can push the ddr2 a little more.
i'll take some photo's of my bios settings once they are prime stable....
I'm having some very interesting problems after putting in the new bios. If I start priming, my internet connection dies. :D I have a wlan-adapter in a pci-slot that use to access internet through my wlan-modem. Somehow it's stability is now affected. Any ideas?-)
I'm thinking of reverting back to the 0203 bios.
this bios file has stopped the board from working after 5 or 6 boots. there is a reason why this isnt available on the asus p5e support page and thats because its corrupt.......
and people were asking me to try it out.... lucky for me i was able to fix the corrupted/broken bios...........
i nearly lost everything then
revert back immediatly m8, this bios should never of been posted.....
just so you know everything stops working on the board untill it doesnt boot at all, luckily taking out my sound card and one of my gpu's to get to the battery and bios reset button made it boot again. but it will only boot once and then the battery must be taken out and the reset button used again. i'm fumin........
I just went back to the old, latest official, bios. Now everything seem to as they used to be. I've been on all sorts of "beta" bioses in the past with other mobos, so it's nothing new that they aren't exactly perfect. Luckily I didn't corrupt anything.
It could well be that it is actually a different version from the one that leaked out earlier. Someone else may test it for me... ;)
Just finished rig changes... WTF with this BIOS. So lets wait Asus releases an official one then :(
:D I flashed 0303 and it works fine. Got only two problems, AI SUITE does not start and BIOS is reading wrong temps.
BTW got the same trouble with the 0203............
For the safety burn a CD ROM with all 4 BIOS versions out so far, so You can always flash back with the EZ FLASH tool in BIOS to the version You like.
When flashed to 0303 it kept all my settings from 0203 - nice.
0303 is now available on official ASUS site.
So 4:5 divider and 400+ FSB is working for you with the new BIOS? It was broken in 0203.
i'm giving this one a miss..... i dont even want it unless its improving performance in some way. #whats the new bios offering, are the options actually working now. if i hear its stable on peoples machines in a few weeks i'll flash but it really gave me a scare today.......
both xp and vista are acting a little wierd still....
Dualcore I have 4 GB of Ballistix 1600Mhz at 8-8-8-24
Since I'm running 4 sticks, it's a big push for the chipset, so I'm running them stable at 1333Mhz 9-9-9-24. I can say they are very stable problem free, I'm happy. But I wouldn't adventure to push them more, unless I'm running only 2 gigs. :-)
I'm currently overclocking my Q6600 @ 3.01Ghz with 1.275VCORE.
Machine is 100% stable.
has anyone tried an areca card in the second pci-e slot?
need a new board, i think the north bridge is damaged. since that bios :banana::banana::banana:ed up my pc i can not get it cosistantly stable.... i'm having a really annoying issue with my mouse aswell where the pointer keeps jumping all over the place......
Yes I have. My current configuration has an Areca 1230ML in the second PCIe X16 slot working just fine. It was giving me trouble in the X4 PCIe slot where the computer would not always boot for some reason. Never was able to determine why other than hearing that the X38 chipset has some inherent problems with certain raid controllers. Can anyone confirm this?
:( Nope - still broken, use 5:6 or 3:5. Hope ASUS will fix it soon with another BIOS release.
Did first tests with the 0303 - looking good so far (RAM is only at 2.34 volts):
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/4949/4ghz32mek7.jpg
I use the CELLSHOCK DDR2-1150 (the red devils:p: )
If got a P5E incomming too :) I'll post my findings as soon as I have the board! And I hope it'll get my early E6600 a bit faster then my P5W DH does, 9x356 is max :(
Wow nice results and overclock camouflage :)
Can you test if 2:3 divider is also working? When my new 2x2GB finally arrives (I´ve been waiting 2 weeks for them grrr) I´ll be using that one.
I'm going to do a comparison between the 975X and X38 chipset to see how much faster X38 is compared to the old 'high end' chipset of intel. Which benchmarks should I run? I'm planning on running my E6600 @ 9x333 for the tests :) And my 7900GS @ stock (wish I had the money for a 8800GT)
So far I have in mind:
- Super PI 1M and 32M
- 3D Mark 01 SE, 05 and 06
- PC Mark Vantage
- Cinebench
- Everest RAM Read
- Everest CPU Queen
Any suggestions? :)
well seen as my board is done for i thought i'd try the new 303 bios. first impressions..... my board is still acting up...
spent a few quid on a new mouse just to see if its my mouse that is broken and causing the random jump up the page.....
just really annoyed with myself for trying that other bios in the first place....
:D No problem - 2:3 working like charme.............
http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7...dividerbn1.jpg
Can anyone here run Cas 3 (800mhz plus)? I sure as hell can't...
Nice camou, I´ll post some numbers when I get those sticks :yepp:
:D How about 32M below 12min with RAM @ 2.40 volts:shocked: :
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/397/42ghz32mgn1.jpg
:welcome:
haha keep pushing it man :D
Mmmmm :) sweet, but this are more sweet! :P
DDR3 Power :) same cpu speed, ddr3 almost 30s.

:D Just lost Your bet mate - You owe me a beer:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8...32m3335ba6.jpg
Done with 2.5 Vmem - maybe less possible, got no more time to test it.
BTW never touched my NB,PLL & FSB volts - always NB=1.41 / PLL=1.5 / FSB=1.3.
Though the 4:5 divider is broken >400 MHz I don't think I really need it....
@ Infa: You can't compare DDR3 performance to DDR2.........;)
Fixed!!! Thank You WeldZilla!!!!!
Bayrider
reflash the bios m8..... the new 303 bios off the asus site is now working and stable.... i'm pretty sure the mouse was causing my issue with the pointer as it also happens at stock.
just reflash, try dllin the bios off the site again and using that one.... good luck m8... my new 80quid mouse arrives in the morning so i'll know if my board has survived the currupted bollox.....
Hey guys, i currently own the p5e with bios 107 that came with the board, i was wondering should i upgrade my bios if im only running stock settings with a q6600 and 2 gigs of 800 mhz crucial balistix?
Djbuddy if you don't have any issues with the current setup, stick with it... the latest release for the Maximus brings better ram performance , no idea for the P5E
flashing your bios is pointless if are just running your machine stock. if you have any issues then upgrading the bios can help sometimes but not often.
stick with what you have.....
@everyone else
i noticed that the dividers are working differantly with 303... i cant use my old settings but am able to work on getting similar if not better performance.
so 303 is definatly doing something to the memory.....
Hi folks,
I jsut received my P5E last thursday and hope to add some experience to the bunch of posters here...and I am curious to see what's going to be discussed here.
Let me correct a few things that I found to be wrong in this thread so far:
Firstly, the voltage damper/loadline calibration feature really appears to be broken. the pencil mod tho is not applied to a RESISTOR, but to a CAPACITOR. Resistors always have a number on them telling the resistance value, capacitors are brownish and have no label.
Secondly, the BIOS 0303 is now officially listed in the P5E BIOS support on ASUS' website. The 0303 has not caused me any obvious problems.
I will most likely not apply the usual "solder vmods" because I'd rather avoid it and wait until the BIOS is being fixed. However I am experienced in SMD soldering and it wouldn't pose a problem to me.
I found a rather striking difference between the P965 chipset and the X38. My P965 left me guessing what's wrong running it at 1.45V MCH. It kept "stumbling" and freezing for up to a minute until it resumed working, but never showed any errors in logs nor caused crashes.
The X38 clearly caused errors in Orthos at the same voltage. I find that a lot better sice you at least get a clear hint that somethign is WRONG and WHAT it could be. I must say I am happy to now use this workstation chipset. :D
OK. Here I am, if I can help clear things up with my 17 years of PC building experiences, lemme know. :)
---
ASUS P5E, BIOS 0303
E6600 @ 3.6 GHz/1.48V/450*8
X38 MCH volt: 1.61
2 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
1 GB MDT DDR2-800
Sparkle 8800GTS 320MB
Enermax Liberty 400W PSU
ST3500630AS SATA2/NCQ 500GB
WD2500KS SATA2 250GB
So whats the concensus on the 303 bios?
I'm stuck @ 465 max on my FSB and can't push it further. Anyone get further with the new bios?
What are you guys pushing quads to with this board???
Your RAM sticks are not as good as camouflage ones. Simple as that. Get over it but dont blame the board... anyway, why do you want to run CAS3 and relatively low clocks on this board? Higher frequencies are better than tighten timmings.
well i don't seem to be the only one having problems but still seeking confirmation and a reason...
seems 0203 and 0303 is bugged, :(
memtestx86 1.70+ and prime95 gives me major ram errors with the above bios'ses but not with 0107 or 0201...
timings and speed and cpu oc has no influence... my ram works fine at 800mhz 4-5-4-11 on bios 0201... but fails even at 667mhz 5-5-5-18 on 0303
all possible setups tried, cpu at standard, everything manual, everything at auto
0203 and 0303 refuses to accept my ram, seem at least one user at the asus forums has this problem as well, anybody in here?
setup is as follows:
Intel C2Q Q6600 B3
Thermalright Ultra120 Ex w/ Scytch 120mm 1200rpm
Asus P5E
4x1GB Mushkin HP2 PC2-6400 4-5-4-11 2.1v
Zotac GF 8800GT
74GB WD Raptor AFDF
//devnull77
I can't confirm this for the P5E but with the Formula timings have been tightened on the ram and I get more and better bandwith with the latest bios for that board (0701)...
Have you tried with Static Read control enabled and Transaction Booster disabled, relax level 1 ?
What exactly does Static Read control?
@ Leeghoofd
well thnx for the answer regarding Maximus Formula... maybe i'll just have to wait it out?? :(
regarding transaction booster tried it at level 0,1,2,3 and disabled, haven't changed anything... i've been testing almost 24/7 to locate if it's that damned bios or my ram... but hard to do alone... static read control enabled? hmmm once yeah normally put this to disabled, but i do think i've tried it enabled and did change anything as well, gonna recheck in a minute...
until then i've ordered 4x1GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500 to test with as well(hope it's not my board that's eventually frying them? seems unlikely as my mushkin still works with 0201)
if anybody else have ram problems with those bios' (0203 and 0303) pls let me know
thnx a bunch
p.s. fugger or anybody else can't magicly pop up with a new beta bios or anything hehe?
;) It improves RAM stability & performance, for me always enabled.
Trans-"crash"-ions booster is for me best set to AUTO, all other settings cause sometimes bluescreens or hard crashes or the board even refuses to boot.
Still can't get AI SUITE running - it is installed and it starts (I see the process running in TASK MANAGER) - but nothing on the desktop.
I phoned with ASUS and they told me they want to do some further test with an E6850.......... . What did the use for the BIOS development, a PENTIUM III ???
The board still reads the CPU temp about 10°C too low. I had the same problem on my P5K deluxe, but there was a setting in BIOS in the CPU section called "PECI"- when this was disabled, the P5K did read the right temps.
But P5E has nomore PECI setting in BIOS.................
Also told this ASUS, the guy on the line told me they want to take a look where PECI can be set on this board............ - hm, do they have better glasses than me to read BIOS settings ???
We'll see................
:welcome:
Man, never try to understand ASUS support lol
The damn sticks are not here yet, so I´m currently playing with some OCZ that only do 900Mhz stable :(
