Ive been having nothing but trouble in DEC contest.
so far the 370 board is just spinning fans so no go
socket A. the 2 nf7 i bought on ebay for 3 bux plus 15 for shipping that I thought I could fix was a no go. so i have a 3200 barton here that i have no idea what its capable of/
754: I found a 754 nf3 ultra DFI on ebay with a busted cap and I have 2 mobile 4000 and a ddr booster but Im too scared to mess with the cap. I need you help guys. I want to take it off one of the horse crap nf7 and solder it on but its a jap cap and not sure how it will play/
939: got some dice today to try on the dfi infinity on my 170 opteron. pain in the ass. this bench session took me 5 hrs. I had to stick dice pellets on the sb because the cooler was broken. and out of 3 sets of ch5 they all sucked do to board limitation.
the only kit that did anything was the 2x256 kit of gskill tccd. and I managed to fail yet again. just 23sec from top 5.

all in all i forgot how crappy dice is to ln2 and how easy it is to clock a clarksdale and submit a score with a simple pin mod.
this is a nightmare. I wanted to make you proud guys but I feel like I have no help here. I have 4 stages I am trying to do on my own.
Try it and you may get some hardware points but the heaven benchmark is totally GPU bottlenecked it seems so for single GPU you'll want a GTX 580 for global points... :up:Quote:

It ran -42 to -44oC with the chip idle and after about 7 Wprime 1024M and 32M runs it dipped down to -39oC but I never saw it get warmer than that. :up:
Finally got efficient scores in Wprime with that CPU so I can get a 5th place in 1024M with 4074mhz(508FSB). Problem is, I couldn't get over 511FSB it would crash at 511FSB right after the 32M run. Tried bunch of voltage settings and I think its maybe a setting I'm missing or the mobo? :shrug:
I got 525FSB on the EP45T-UD3LR with a warmer SS unit last time I tested this chip so I'm going to throw it on that board tomorrow and see how it goes.
After I get Wprime cleared away with this CPU I'll hit Superpi32M with a properly tuned OS for some fun.

That one saw about -37c at 260w testing, and was good for around 320w max, so you're not really pushing it too much just yet. I think it'll work fine with what I estimate a 6 core at for load, and hopefully one day we'll see that too :)
Looks good, though I think you should chop up an old case into a 'benching frame and just bolt it to the top of the cooler :D would look great painted black to match, and make your life easier with the mobo.

You could run Heaven DX 11 on your 5870, but Heaven doesn't need many cores, so disable HT, clock it up and assign it to 4 cores. ;)

I got my 3rd abit nf7s and was able to install windows so I am hoping to have some decent 462 results in stage 1. I went across the bot and looked for abit nf7 results to see what cpus the guys had for spi 32 and stumbled across this beauty.

as for my 754 I have mobiles so I shaved off the brackets so they would make contact but on both boards I get a post beep and shut off immediately after. any ideas?

I have a netflix acct and hate waiting for the dvd/Br to show up. so I bought ROKU player. Its amazing. its 79 bux little box and you can stream your netflix movies wireless. so the other day i was looking for old kungfu movies and came across some old jackie chan movies. there is this one called "thunderbolt." its jackie chan as a rally race car driver and it rules! he can drive man. anyway in the movie chan's car crashed in the try outs and hes out of a car. then the next day a girl who he found her lost earing at the beginning of the movie comes in with a trailer with 2 identical fully tweaked rally cars and 25 sets of expensive racing tires.
she says if you crash one you have the other one to finish the race with.
this is what we are doing. I never really got it before and when people ask me what overclocking is I tell them its like taking the governor off your car so you can exceed the intended speed. but its much more. were racing computers. and I know you guys have known this for years but I never felt this way.
anyways. I feel like that babe came here with a bunch of boards and 2x everything but I ended up crashing all my cars while driving to the tryouts. I didnt even get in the tryouts and crash them at that time. I crashed them all before even getting to the racetrack.

everytime my board haven't runned for a while i get the ff bug, i usually get it to boot like that: only 1 stick of ram no cpu cooler and i push the bios chip and it's a succeful post. This board is now a real PITA to boot. But once it's warmed up i never get the ff bug again. I contacted EVGA yesterday about my no post code...i'll grab the opportunity to tell them about the cold boot problem to see what they think
anyway now i can at least make a few runs of maxxmen for the country cup!

Anyways... I started off by removing the three red pins. AN3, AJ3, and last but not least AK4. I know you guys reccomend against physically removing the 3 pins. But let me finish...
Next I put the tually in my board and it posted as Intel Celeron@ 667Mhz! By default, the board was running it at 66Mhz. I was surprised it got it right, but my board isn't that old anyways. I couldn't believe it posted on my first try!
Right away I went to the voltage settings and it was at 2.30v!! I was like holy crap, hopw is it running this high? When I went to select the voltage, to my dismay 2.30 was the lowest I could choose from! Highest being 2.90v. Temps were hitting low 60 degrees celsius... My hs/f is good but not at that voltage! So I shut down and let it cool off.
Next thing I had to do was get the default volatage down... So I took my motherboard out and flipped it upside down. Instead of nail polish, or IDE cable wires, conductive paint etc wrapping the pins on the CPU itself.. I just soldered a piece of 40 conductor IDE wire from AM34(VSS) to AK36(Vid25m) on the back of the motherboard. This was soooo easy compared to trying to wrap the damn pins on the cpu, which is what I tried before.
Having done the soldering, I put the board back in and went into the BIOS to check to see what my voltage choices were...! I was shocked... My voltage choices were now 1.25v lowest, all the way up to 1.55v! This was great! I could now choose 1.5v if I wanted. So I put the FSB at 100 and voltage at 1.5v and botted into windows xp. No problems, ran everything... games, prime95, sisoft sandra burn in for hours. Everything was perfect! But now I wanted to overclock... Maximum of 1.55v was not going to get me far at all... Got me to 112FSB but that was it.
So I proceeded to solder another wire to AM34(VSS)... this time it was AL37(Vid2). Having soldered that... I went into the bios and could now select voltages from 1.55v ~ 1.95v! I knew this was perfect.. I am now running at 1400Mhz, 140x10, 1.65v STABLE. I'm going to try for 1450 and 1500. I'll let you guys know how high I can get this chip. Although I'm pretty happy at 1400Mhz.
This was my first mod of this kind ever, and I guess I'm extremely lucky it worked out so perfect. I wouldn't have been able to do it without all the great suggestions in this thread. Thanks everyone.

Thanks Dan but I still think its a low score for the setup. My GT2/3 are pretty low compared to other people with similar gpu clocks. Not sure if its my OS or the REX/E8600 platform being inferior in those game tests.:shrug:
Anyway it looks like my "good" rampage has taken a turn for the worse. I tested it again the other night and I just couldn't get it to bench past 600fsb:(. I have a second rampage that can still handle high fsb(630+) but the Fujitsu cap under the cpu is bulging so bad that I don't want to risk my cpu on it. I guess Sandy Bridge couldn't come at a better time for me.:D

Your right, a stronger video card or running 2 or more cards puts a bigger load on the cpu and it may not clock as high as with a single card or a lower performing card but this isn't the case for me. I had the system benching with the gfx card before at 6.3ghz, a few weeks back, with no issues. But now I can't even get into windows, even at 6.2ghz.:shakes: This is with the Antec TPQ-1200 psu.Quote:

okay basically it goes like this. you need to be on the lowest divider. which means your mem frequency is going to be in the 600-700 range.
this means you need to run at 5 and 6 mem timings.
so your mem is running way below spec.
the only way to get high scores in this is to have xtreme cooling on the cpu and run high cpu frequency. I have a xeon 3540 and a x58 sabertooth.
the board is not insulated and I wasnt planning going to my ln2 spot. but this seems like the only way to get anything in this one. also note that you will be beyond 200+ bcklk so your qpi will need to run run lower to compensate for the increased qpi. thats all i have atm. Its a total pain in the ass. but what did we expect.

all the new hdwr has me confused. like the 6950/6970 mod. that means nothing to me if I cant run cold on it.
same goes for gulftown. if there is no cold mods then there is no point. I didnt shell out 400 bux a month ago for a gemini and a slim vga pot from vince so I could keep it in a box in my closet. Are you dudes on the same page? Is AMD about to release some stuff? I would rather hold off on something I can freeze. its rad that intel can clock 5ghz on air on a 4 core and that would be my dream if i was 25 again and limited to h20. but I have gotten older and have invested a lot into xtreme cooling and i think its just a matter of time before someone like hicookie figures it out. I am gonna wait it out. I know a lot of you feel the same as me about this.

okay what I did was did maxed my uncore and tuned to 5-5-5- and lowered the cpu a bit. I got into windows and clicked maxmem shortcut on my desktop and it took forever to get to the start bench button to become active. Once I hit it the bottom bar was going along and it hanged around the middle and the screen went white except for the task bar. I couldnt see the desktop...just the maxmem window and then the desktop background came back and after a while the maxmem bar kept going again and I was expecting the no score or a really low one.
and then this happened.
I saved the maxmem file so I have proof. took as many pics as I could and made a screen shot. it happened exactly as described and I am dumbfounded. its rad though.
