It's all about the risk you are willing to take.

I'm on the more conservative side, and I'm very careful what I say about voltage because voltage can cure some problems, but it also kills these parts if one goes to high. AFter a bunch of reading, I've developed a feel for it, but I'm very careful what I do.

Many thanks for the eplanation and for giving your reference voltages. I'm on the conservative side as well but was hoping to achieve 4Ghz with my 920. Unfortunately I'm still waiting for some WC'ing components and wiring (8-pin extender). I hope to receive all these components this week, so I can assemble everything this weekend and start to play with the settings. I just wanted to make sure that I don't screw up my new components immediately by not complying to the 0,5v differential.

My voltage fluxuated from 1.288 to 1.296 during the Linpack test.

I just started trying to Oc this chip. My next step is to increase the memory to over 1600 Mhz and try to stabalize that.

I turned off HT and tried to get 4.4 stable, and just couldn't. I think I need to adjust something else besides vcore since I ramped it all the way up to 1.53 v and still unstable.

I'm using a new board. Asus P6T Deluxe. I'm familiar with the Gigabyte board more. It seems you have more voltages to adjust compared to the Asus.

The 940 is more expensive than the 920 and reacts similarly, but I'm selling my 920. I can't hit 210 bclk with it unless I increase qpi/vtt past 1.75V which is crazy. It does work really well at 200 x 19 w/ HT on though.

Higher bclk = higher IMC stress and more bandwidth to feed the cores at the higher core clocks. There's no reason I can think of for a lower multi with higher bclk to lower the required voltage other than some bizarre motherboard implementation thing. I'm still a noob though.

Unless when you increase the multiplier, the volts needed to stabilize it, are considerably more.

Take the E8600. It required more volts to do 450 x 10 compared to 500 x 9. The higher multi required more volts, which imo we are still seeing with the i7 processors.

Well I wish I could get my system to post at 210 bclk so I could test a lower multi but 200 is the highest I've tried successfully.

I had that problem with my old chip. What qpi/vtt are you using? with this one, I'm at 1.35v.

I need 1.275 VTT for 19x200+HT. I'm actually backed down to 21x180+HT right now though but still at 1.275 VTT because I didn't feel like figuring out if a lower value would work. I required 1.375 VTT for 20x200+HT in Prime blend and I think the bump to 1.395v helped with 21x200+HT.

I tried 19x211 and it worked for me. I tried running 3dmark06 and Vantage quiet a few times - it worked. CPU : 1.35 in BIOS and QPI : 1.335

Ran Prime95, it failed after 20 mins or so.

Yea it seems we can get many variations of 'stable' including LinX without true memory stability at high multi-threaded loads. :(

Your chip seems to react like my 3837B017 regarding QPI and Vcore voltages, also there is some kind of binding between QPI voltage and Vcore, maybe its temperature related. :confused:

If you want to try, I got mine stable at 211bclock @1.5VQPI and 213bclock @1.55VQPI.

Thank you for this information! What I fear may be true: I have a weak or at least mediocre IMC. :(

I think I read earlier in the thread that G.Skill support replied to an e-mail regarding QPI/VTT voltage that it is ok to go high with it as long as there is sufficient cooling. I'm hoping the Intel max VTT spec of 1.35v is only specified because of the issue with DDR3 kits requiring too much voltage and causing the voltage differential issue with the QPI. That and maybe also the increased heat.

I have read several pages from this thread (approx. from page 65 up to here). But it is still not clear to me what Turbo mode exactly means? Should I disable turbo mode for OC'ing and how about HT?

I would like to know because by the end of this week I will have my i7 system and want to start to mess with the settings.

Turbo - Intel's oc'ing feature, bumps up the multiplier under load. Some peeps run with turbo on but most turn it off. HT - usefull but requires more voltage and produces more heat under load, so most peeps turn it off to achieve higher oc.

Turbo = 21 multi on a 920, 22 multi on a 940 and I guess 23 by default on a 965. I think the Asus motherboards might still have the issue where you can't get the turbo multi to activate past certain clock speeds though.

The little things vary greatly between different i7 setups. You're going to have to test for yourself. Some chips/boards like the 21 multiplier that Turbo offers, some don't. HT kills some chips at high clocks, while others just experience increased temperatures.

It goes on, and on, my friend. I think that's part of the fun, though. Unless, of course, you're a certain individual with an MSI board who's about to throw his i7 rig out the window. :p:

If using Gigabyte board and F4beta bios and later, just think of turbo as an extra multi. So for i920 if you want to use 20 multi (stock) turn turbo off. If you want to use 21 multi, set turbo on, and you now have a permanent 21 multi (though bios still says 20).

If you have a board that enables TDP limits...read intels white paper, but GB bios ignores TDP, current, and temp limits so below paper does not apply.

Well I'm defining weak by the fact that it seems to require more voltage than others (and than Intel's safe max! :() and from Anand's research showing huge variations in the required VTT for the same other settings on the same board with two chips from different lots. I wonder if Intel bins the chips largely based on IMC quality and 920 users are lucky to get good ones? Certainly the faster default QPI speed on the 965 is at least part of the binning.

Well, after all this talk of BCLK I decided to do an actual test on mine. Low and behold, maximum BCLK of 222MHz (set in BIOS, TurboV/CPU-Z reports it as 221 for some reason but whatever)...

Anyway, 20-pass LinX run completed without issues using 1.47500V QPI/DRAM (VTT). I'd say this is not bad?! :up: :down: See screenshot below.

My quest to get something stable out of my 3836B043 chip continues on....
Here is the latest. It will run 3.75ghz @ 1.23v stable all day long with HT off QPI/VTT set to 1.33v 21x178

I enable HT and if I stress all 8 cores heavily within 5mins it will get the BSOD of "an uncorrectable hardware error has occured"

Now, I AM runnin on a 500w P&PC cooling PSU...
I also am runnin on stock heatsink and temps hit 80C pretty easily with all 8 "cores" being stressed....

Im wondering if its either of the above 2 or if my chip just plain sucks at high speeds with HT enabled....

You cannot really clocks past 3.6GHz using the stock heatsink. 99.9% certain temps are killing your OC.

DRAM is at 8x222MHz so 1776MHz with 8-8-8-24-1T timings (loosened them from 7-8-7-20-1T to test for max BCLK), and Uncore is at 3774MHz (17x222MHz instead of the default 2xDRAM or 16x).

Looks like your running XP (32-bit?) and possibly only 3GB of RAM though. Or at least your only testing 772MB of RAM in LinX instead of All. Try 6GB and Vista/Windows 7 64-bit and that will likely have more of an effect on how high your able to get with the BCLK.

You need a good IMC to be able to run high BCLK's or high memory speeds with the i7's and 6GB is more stressful on the IMC than 3GB. A 64-bit OS will also put more stress on the CPU than 32-bit.

Yes I am aware of all of that. I do not clock my memory to arbitrary speeds before ensuring that it is completly stable at those speeds :) I already know for my numerous tests before that my memory is 100% stable up to 1900MHz OC using 8-9-7-20-1T timings and 1.43750V QPI/DRAM with 3800MHz Uncore. I use 6GB of Corsair Dominator DRAM.

So yes, in conclusion, this would be stable with all 6GB or DRAM used. This chip does seem to have a decent IMC. This was just a quick, isolated BCLK test. But, either way, what's the point when I still cannot clock it for 24/7 past 4.2GHz :p:

I have 12 GB OCZ gold 8-8-8-24 1.65 memory. I think that's keeping me from stabilizing memory over 1600 Mhz, but I would have to remove some memory to see and to be honest with you, I think that the 12 GB would be more beneficial than the extra speed.

I could yes, but that would turn the CPU into a mini-heater. Not only does it require higher Vcore, but also much higher Vqpi than 21x200MHz.

No point in it really...

Either way I put it, 4.2GHz to 4.3GHz seems to be the maximum point to achieve for 24/7.

In terms of DRAM, both 12GB DRAM or >1600MHz DRAM are overkill for pretty much any application. I just wish I could load the whole OS into the memory and then somehow keep it there :p:

Dejanh, are you using an Asus Board? I can't find where to enable Turbo mode. I'm using Asus P6T deluxe bios 1102

look at the pic attached.
don't ask me to explain it - but I get lower temps and higher oc at high bclock/low multi. All this was on air. (noctua 12 with 2x120 in push/pull)

I just felt like there might be some magic to the EX58-Extreme+965 Extreme+3x1GB modules+Not Vista-64 you were using because my results were so different to yours but with a very similar motherboard.

Based on my reading - all this thread, several others and my own experience - I don't think there is anything different between 920, 940 and 965 except the multi locks.
Random chance (maybe week of manufacture?) determines best oc regardless of how much you paid for your i7.

Tell me about it. I adopted i7 one week after it's official release (actually less than that, only about 4 days). I did pay less for my i7 940 than some other people paid for it but still, I am extremely pissed over this and will likely never get over it until I move to a new system. But because of the price I paid, I am not planning on moving anytime soon so it looks like I'll be reminded of this for a very long time.

I personally do not feel that Intel does any sort of binning on these chips.

This is strange, and I found this strange from day 1 when I started overclocking i7 back in the beginning of November. Usually having unlocked multipliers means that you can achieve higher clocks with lower voltages and a cooler system as you are not required to overclock basically everything else in the system. However, with i7 this definitely does not seem to be the case. I'd say maybe that is where the problem in differentiating i7 920 from i7 940 from i7 965 really is...multiplier is almost meaningless especially in the case of i7 940 vs. i7 920.

I use the R2E not P6T board. My Turbo settings are located under the Advanced tab in the BIOS, under CPU Configuration option.

OK - enough - so it has been suggested that I should lap my cpu to try to get better heat xfer.
I am having 2nd thoughts about doing this because doing so voids the intel warranty (on a $1K processor!)
The reason this was suggested was the load temps that I have been posting.
So those of you that have an i7 under water - please take a look at the three screen captures below.
All three are on water - the first is with everything at stock, the second is at 4.0 HT on and the third is at 4.2 HT on and at vcore of 1.55v.
Can anyone confirm that these are inline with your experience or are they high for water?

Temps are max 69C running LinX so your temps aren't bad considering you are giving it more Vcore.

I think I agree with 6gb memory maybe making oc harder, higher qpi and mem v probably.
Regarding 32 vs 64 os not so sure.
64 os seems to corrupt easier when crashing alot, but once a high stable oc is found - 64 seems to run it just as well as 32.
When benching - you may need to turn some things off in vista to equalize of course - like aero, ...

about to pull the trigger on a 920/x58(p6t) combo; i havent been active on the forums since the G0 q6600's were all the rage ;)

im trying to get familiar with x58 overclocking, not looking to break any records here, but id like to hit 3.6-4.0 on air and not sure what heatsink/fan to go with, suggestions?

also, the p6t thread is pretty quiet, which was a surprise to me since i thought the p6t board was dominating this time around.. maybe not i guess :rolleyes:

The UD5 is an excellent mobo - just as good as the extreme for oc based on what I have seen
The 920 with F4j or m and with turbo turned on gives you constant x21 cpu multi - this is a big deal!
Do any of the other mobo's do this - ggbt did a great thing when they enabled turbo full time.
Don't be shy about the voltages or the temps - i7s can take it like there is no tomorrow.
Stay within the cpu max voltages - don't worry about the high temps for benching - the cpu can take it.
It will not thermally throttle until 100C!

I agree and can attest that windows xp sp3 32bit which I ran for first month or so versus windows 7 64 bit last weeks, there was no difference at all on any of my settings between two, 24/7 OC or benching.

Max bclk 215 at 1.35vtt/qpi on both (3x1gb ram)
Max bclk 217 at 1.68vtt/qpi on both. (soft wall at 215 and hard wall at 217).
Max OC 4.899 on XP, 4.922 on wind 7 (but that was likely 2C diff in temps not OS), using exact same settings.

All my stable overclocks at 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 require exactly same settings on both windows 7 64bit and XP for prime stable.

I have 3x2gb 1600 OCZ 7,7,7 ram coming tomorrow, so regarding how much more qpi/Vtt for 3x1 vs 3x2 in same system, I will post in a day or two after it gets here. I currently have 3x1 OCZ and 3x1 corsair dom.

As an aside, benching spi and arena chess were basically same speed on windows 7 64bit as XP32, though chess may have been little faster on 7...at least running approx same number runs I got highest score on 7...hard to call for sure.

Most people seem to be reporting that the 920 and 940 i7's don't like the even multipliers like x20 as well as the odds like x21 and x19 so they require higher vcore. I would think that rule applies to the Extremes as well.

Unless Asus has released a new BIOS that changed the requirements for Turbo to be enabled then no the P6T does not. Asus still has either a TDP or temp requirement in place in order for Turbo to be enabled.

Thanks beast - yes I have 4.4 with ht off with max temp of 69 - so that matches up - good deal - maybe I am ok after all!

My Memory timings are weird. Checkout Case Latency of 4. My memory goes into latency 4 after I resume from sleep. Is it Really 4 or just a error reading it by two software's.

How bad is it to use a QPI/VTT voltage above 1.35V? I have read that Intel dont recommend it!
To use high blck a need 1.4V for stability.

time will tell how much wiggle room (if any) there is on these intel max voltages.
if you are prepared to be one of the test cases - go for it - someone has to do it.
if you want to stay under the 1.35 something else to try is to increase (just one, no more than two clicks) qpi pll and (no greater than .5v over qpi v) your memory v.

I can run a 200pass of Linx (768MB, 10000) simultaneously with a prime95 blend or lrage calculation for 12 hours. No stability problems.

Moving Linx to a 4096MB test (problem size 23000) I can not even complete two passes - it always fails on the second calculation regardless of how much power I put in to the CP, QPI, mem, slacken timings etc. This is at 19x205.

Am I being too harsh - and can anybody else with an overclocked rig circa 4ghz run a 200 pass on a 4096MB (23k) or greater problem size?

My opinion - if you are prime stable 12 hours you are stable enough - I have not used linx yet but unless you see something else unexpected showing up in regular apps I wouldn't worry about it.

I have some new memory arriving tomorrow - upgrading from 3x1gb 1066 to 2000.
I am trying to figure out how to go about ocing it based on current best cpu oc, bclock and uncore.
I have a lot of options (965 cpu) but it seems like the uncore speed is going to be my likely limiter.
At 200+ bclock I will want to run the mem mutli at 10 so that means the uncore multi needs to be at 21 right?
But 200x21 is uncore running at 4200 which it seems it will not do.
So questions -
1. I assume cpu cycles are still king and that I do not want to give up on any of my cpu oc (almost 4.3 ht on, and 4.4 ht off).
2. How do I get the uncore speed high enough to run the memory at 2k?

you could etst by setting latency to 4 in bios but my guess is it would not boot (or post?). I guess its an error although good if it isnt :-)

1) OC STABLE - 3.31 Ghz @ 1.14v
Prime95 blend stable for 9 hours with stock cooler. MaxTemps were off due to RealTemp 2.7, but read 75/76/75/75. No bios edits except BCLK set to 166.

2) OC STABLE - 3.5 Ghz @ 1.14v
Prime95 blend stable for 30 mins with V8. MaxTemps were off due to RealTemp 2.7, but read 58/58/56/56.

3) OC STABLE - 3.6 Ghz @ 1.14
Prime95 blend stable for 30 mins with V8. Temps with RealTemp 2.9 = 65/64/64/62. 3.6 is easy and stable OC with low voltage.

4) OC UNSTABLE - 3.8 @ 1.16v
Prime95 blend caused reboot under 20 minutes. Voltage too low.

5) OC FAIL - 4.0 Ghz @ 1.20v
Prime95 caused reboot in less than 2 minutes. Only BIOS changes were BLCK@200 and CPUv @ 1.2000v.

6) OC STABLE - 4.0 Ghz @ 1.325v
QPIv = 1.225v. Prime95 blend torture test @ 4.0 Ghz = 7 hours stable. DRAMf = 1223. Everything else was on Auto. I jumped from 1.2 to 1.325, so the temps were a bit high: 97/95/91/90. I had success with low voltage OC in the 3.6-3.8 range, so I am resetting CPUv to 1.3125. See below.

7) HIGHEST STABLE OC - 4.0 Ghz @ 1.3125v
Reduced voltage from #6. Prime95 blend stable for 11+ hours. QPIv = 1.225v. DRAMv = 1.6v. Everything else set on Auto. Max temps are 93/92/89/87.

8) OC UNSTABLE - 4.1 Ghz @ various voltages
1.300-1.325; QPIv 1.2-1.275; PLLv 1.8-1.96. Also randomly set CPU Diff Amplitude to 800 and CPU clock skew to 100ps. Nothing would keep prime stable longer than 20 minutes. Temps were not high, but need to up CPUv to have this work in prime95. Windows boot stable, internet surf stable, CPUMark stable. No other apps tested.

9) OC UNSTABLE - 4.2 Ghz @ noted voltages
CPUv 1.323-1.350; QPIv 1.325-1.35; PLLv 1.90-1.96. As with 4.1Ghz try, also randomly set CPU Diff Amplitude to 800 and CPU clock skew to 100ps. Prime died within 5 minutes. CPUMark only worked at CPUv 1.350; QPIv 1.35; PLLv 1.96. Prime95 reboot in 1 minute. Temps were not high, but need to up CPUv to have this prime95 stable. Windows boot stable at CPUMark OK voltages and internet surf-able. No other apps tested.

Need to figure out how to get 4.1+ stable. I figure it must be something besides voltage since 4.0G works with 1.3125 - and maybe a little less, but I haven't tested 1.3000 or 1.30625 yet.

10) OC STABLE - 4020hz (201 X 20) @ 1.31875
CPUv 1.31875; QPIv 1.225; PLLv A. Prime Small for 8 hours. Yeah, I ran small, and I'm not going back to run blend ;)

11) OC ~STABLE - 4047hz (213 X 19) @ 1.31875
CPUv 1.31875; QPIv 1.30v; PLLv 1.80. LinX 20 stable. Temps 96/96/92/90. Will update with Prime Blend later.

12) OC ~STABLE - 4066hz (214 X 19) @ 1.3125
Reduced CPUv to 3.125; QPIv 1.30v; PLLv 1.80. LinX 20 stable. Temps 97/96/91/90. Will update with Prime Blend later.

13) OC ~STABLE - 4085 (215 x 19) @ 1.3125
CPUv 3.125; QPIv 1.30v; PLLv 1.80. LinX 20 stable. Temps 98/97/93/91. Will update with Prime Blend later.

Looks like I am getting to the top of my cooler's ability. I was able to run 4.104Ghz (216 X 19), but temps got up to 99 in LinX, so I shut it off.

**NOTE** interestingly, in prime blend, temps are 10 degrees cooler than LinX. I may be able to get a higher prime blend stable OC than LinX simply due to temps...

for benching and stress testing i7 will do fine with an occasional max temp of 90. the proc does not throttle until 100c -

Since I changed from windows xp 32bit to windows 7 64bit, decided to change my ram from 3x1gb 1600, 8x200 (corsair dom 8,8,8 24) to OCZ 6gb (3x2gb) plat running stock at 7,7,7 21 1600 (8x200). Only change I needed for 4.2ghz prime/linpack stable was increasing qpi/vtt 2 notches from 1.31v to 1.35v.

if you don't mind - I would like very much to try your multi's!

I am using qpi/UC/mem of 18/17/8, and of course 21x200. I forgot to add above I am mainly switching from 3gb to 6gb, running at same speed, except OCZ rated 7,7,7 also.

But if you are planning on running 2000mem, I have benched that high with my OCZ 3x1 gb, but of course mine I have to use crazy volts as mine is not rated for 2000 at 1.65v. I had to use something like 1.96DRAM and 1.6qpi/vtt...but I was also running uncore at 22x or 4400. Using 10/20x, which you will probably use if trying to run at stock, dont know what you will need for qpi/vtt. I think my qpi/vtt was not as bad for running 10/20..but I was benching not running prime either.

Actually since you got i965, you can run at 1800, 1900, etc...you should be able to find a sweet spot with good mem speed and not too high qpi/vtt....be interesting to see what you get.

What is Load Line Calibration ?

I just Disabled that - Now I see my load temperatures is lower by 4c on linx. Is it good to have it disabled ?

My Load Temperature before in CPUZ was 1.248 after disabling it - 1.216 for 3.9 Ghz OC.

All it does is increase the vdroop you are seeing when you disable it. If you were on the edge of stability with it on you will definitely crash with it off unless you raise vCore.

I have 2 questions.

1. My bios says my qpi speed is 4220. Is it safe to run it that high? Its stable.

2. Even though it says 4220 in the bios CPUZ says its 3798. Which one am I to believe?

I finally decided to endup with 3.8 Ghz for 24x7 with CPU-z load voltage for 1.2V with max Linx load temp of 70C.

I was able to drop my CPU voltage by 0.5V, just with a BIOS update to F5E.

4 Ghz is possible with high voltage and temperature were upto 83C, so I decided to stay at 3.8Ghz, which is pretty good, I believe so.

QPIv was set at 1.225. PLLv = auto.

Getting 4.2 stable on air cooling is a real chore. But it seems like my chip could handle 4.2 (and maybe more) under water cooling...

Is it me or does the Asus P6T Deluxe leave you wanting more control for OCing?

The Gigabyte board has Qpi/pll and a few more voltages and I don't see them on the P6T.

If you go 200 bclk, then you can run memory at 1600 or 2000. There is no option for 1800 at that BCLK.

I've run memory at 1600, but not 2000 with that bclk, I may be wrong but I don't know if you'll be able to get it stable.

Memory at 2000MHz would require uncore at 4000MHz. Not likely to happen.

you will have 6x multi, 8x multi, 10x multi, etc available. There is no 9x multi, so no 9x200 or 1800. So for 200 bclk, you can run 1600 and 2000. For example on my cpu i7 940, I can run 1600 mem (8x mem x 200 bclk) with 1.65v DRAM and 1.33qpi/vtt. Both of those are near max intel recommended volts for memory and qpi/vtt, but fine for 24/7 use. Uncore is 17x or 18x, for 3400 mhz or 3600 mhz uncore.

Uncore must be 2x memory or no boot. So now try 2000 mem. To run 2000 mem (I do for benching), I must use 10x mem multi 10x200 bclk, and thus 20x uncore at minimum. I need 1.64 qpi/vtt and 1.96 DRAMv to do so, way outside intel recommended limits, and that is for benching stability (may need more v for 24/7) albeit arena chess, which is like stress testing for 5 minutes....and I use 22x uncore or 4400 mhz, though could use 20x which would be little easier. So if you are willing to run high volts for 24/7, then you can run 2000. Even if unlike me, you buy ram rated for 2000 which will run at 1.65 v DRAM, it still requires high VTT/qpi and probably still high DRAM to drive uncore at 4000 min. RGE would running qpi at 4220 and 1.335 volts be ok? Will the speed cause any damage? or just the volts. My ram is set at 1.66 aswell.

Some reviewer did testing between running qpi at 36, 44, 48 on gigabyte (listed 18, 22, 24 ie different units on asus but same), cant remember where, maybe someone else will. There is no benefit to running higher qpi than lowest 36x gb (18x on asus) so all you are doing is making it more difficult to run stable. I benched myself using a bclk I could run all 3 at, got same scores, not faster at all. There is a difference in slow mode, but i think that is just so people can test bclk issues.

I dont think it is an issue of hurting anything, just that it has no benefit, it detracts from stability, so no point in doing it. Guessing you are 21x191?? I would just put on 36x gb/18x asus qpi, for 18x191 or whatever your bclk is.

If you meant uncore, that is different, as higher uncore does help performance, but again detracts from stability.

I benched myself using a bclk I could run all 3 at, got same scores, not faster at all. There is a difference in slow mode, but i think that is just so people can test bclk issues.

I dont think it is an issue of hurting anything, just that it has no benefit, it detracts from stability, so no point in doing it. Guessing you are 21x191?? I would just put on 36x gb/18x asus qpi, for 18x191 or whatever your bclk is.

If you meant uncore, that is different, as higher uncore does help performance, but again detracts from stability.

Im running 211X19 with I920 and GigaUD5. My qpi and uncore settings are set on auto and ram is running at 8x.

I got mixed up... CPUZ says my QPI speed is 3798(in bios is says 7.59GHz), and my Uncore in bios is 4220.
Do you think it looks like I need to change anything?

Your qpi speed is 7596 GT/sec and 3798 in cpuz...same speed different units...just like GB bios just uses 36 qpi multi versus 18 on asus. You are running same lowest qpi multi as everyone else, you cant go any lower anyways.

Your uncore, you are running much higher (20x) than most, surprised it is stable with that low dram/vtt. I run mine at 17x or 18x. I use 20x and higher for short benching as I need much higher volts than you are using for that. Not going to hurt anything other than making stability more difficult, so if you run into stability problems, I would take uncore off auto and put at 18x. Gaming, apps and stuff you wont see much diff between 18 and 20, but a few benching programs it makes a small difference...at least on my testing, and again at least one review site did that ? anandtech..cant remember.

Good morning, I think I might have 4.3 HT on prime stable.
I needed to up the vcore to 2 clicks above 1.55v.
I tried to justify this was ok because of vdrop.
Looks like cpuz idle is at 1.536v - so maybe ok (certainly on the edge).
Anyway - 4.3ghz 9 hrs prime stable under water at just under 80C max T -

So I picked up some new memory from the egg.
Arrived yesterday - gskill pi black 3x1gb 2000 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231240
Installation was a breeze and memory check out went fine.
Not much bling, don't care much for the heat spreader tops but seems functional!
Turned on xmp and yikes!- gskill has the xmp set to qpi of 1.55v!
Well - I let it run over night and all seemed fine - I'm concerned about letting it run at that for 24/7 - the intel specified max is 1.35v.
Interesting that gskill is doing this.

Nice OC Steve!!! Too much voltage for me though. This forum is really bad because with all of the great OCs people are doing, it makes you want to take yours even further.

I remember saying, "I'd be happy with a 4.0 C2D", then I got the E8600 and hit 4.2 with no issues, but instead of being happy, I kept pushing until I hit 4.5.

This time I am trying to find a nice balance between voltage and performance. I'm at 4.008 GHz at 1.288V and anything higher requires a lot more voltage, so I'm thinking that I may stop there and call it a day.

known procedure by nearly all manufacturers as the facts rated modules >DDR3-1866 will have CPU VTT in the 1.5+ region - same for Corsair DDR3-1866 validated at CPU VTT 1.5v IIRC

How much CPU VTT you need depends on cpu IMC too
