I just got this board with a q9550. Is it recommended to reapply thermal paste to the chipset? I read it about another Asus. It will take more time but better to do it now if necessary.

I have a P5QC....The heatsink (bronze and has black marking "ASUS") below the CPU gets amazingly hot...I cant touch it. Is this normal?

I have been reading and learning on my own to slowly move this CPU up...
I am just proverbially dipping my toe in the water. I think I have a good chance of 3.8Ghz, 450fsb; but wouldn't hesitate to run it higher but I may need some proper pc8500 4Gb ram. I've got either 2x (or 4x) 1Gb crucial pc2-6400c4 (had some just like it at 1150Mhz ages ago), or 2x2Gb corsair xms6400c5 ver3.1 1.8v (possibly good for 472ddr +0.2-0.3v).
Also my +12v is 12.15v according to a DMM not as in speedfan.
Vcore goes from 1.224v load to 1.264v idle ( believe I'm lower than what the bios gave by default, I've been seeing 1.3v in everest for default.)

Testing 450fsb x 8.5 = 3.8Ghz now. I put the vcore up to 1.3v 2 notches higher. It didn't like when I moved the CPU ref multipliers for die 1 & 2 to x0.635 & x 0.675. I initially tested it in memtest (test #7), since I've not used 450fsb before. Was crashing at desktop and on starting orthos at lower vcore.
Edit: knocked the cpu down to 8 and found I needed to increase vNb to 1.14 for prime blend.
I am on shipping bios 2201 and board is produce of China.:up:
2nd core keep failing in prime when I put the multi back to 8.5 so I'm 1.325v now, tried putting the first die cpu ref to x0.635 and then clock skew cpu 400ps and nb 200ps but didn't help; or maybe I didn't try enough different values. Now error on first core 5min of prime. It is 1:30hr stable with x8 cpu multi or 425fsb x8.5. Is it wise to keep bumping up the vCore? Should I try something else first?
I changed the cpu Ref for first die (core 0 & 1) to x0.640 which did seem to make an improvement till prime disappeared off screen, so I bumped vCore up another notch 1 higher than 1.325v. Also I put vTT up a notch to 1.24v since from the sticky about how to set GTL ref, its involved. Am I doing ok?
The thing I am concerned about is 3.6Ghz with 1.3 but 3.8Ghz not stable with 1.34375v, is that normal?
Put your Vnb up, it can take a lot more you know. Try 1.36v and see how you fare ;)
It will do 425 with 1.12vNB and 450 with 1.14vNB. I am running 450 now with 8x multi. I was trying to run 450 x 8.5 but this is where it seemed to require alot more vcore for a small gain of 200Mhz. I'm going to try higher vTT and vNB since alot have it higher than me.

Photo24 was 1hr5 min prime stable. I had some settings which surpassed that (maybe pic 22) with lower vTT. However I am trying settings in photo25 now. Messing with GTL ref & PLL back to 1.52v.
3.6Ghz was really easy, needed only 1.14vNB, but now I think it is wise to tweak other settings rather than vCore alone. I have tested the FSB with lower multi already needless to say, so I'm going for adjustments which effect cpu stability.

First I lowered GTL ref for first core to x0.620
went from 1hr5 prime stable to 2hr48 prime stable (or unstable if u like)
Upped vcore from 1.34375v to 1.35v
increased stable time by 6min.
Tried x0.610 and right after I "tested" a register dump in core temp it errored on core 1 at 2min in.
Back to x0.620 and now testing pll 1.52->1.56v.
Its better with the 400fsb strap. Is there a problem with 1:1 with 2201 bios (second to latest and shipping bios for me).
Question you go stable from 1.14NB to 1.36 ? Or do you mean the rig just posted ? There's a big difference in voltage settings between the Asus and gigabyte boards, espeically for the NB.
I can't tell anything about 2201 bios , but the P5Q Dlx board was always easier to stabilise with anything than 1:1 divider ( works easy on the Gigas). Also more volts are not always better, this counts specially for the voltage sensitive NB. My bet is your CPU just needs a tad more Vcore to stabilise (it also fails on 20K which is pure CPU)... Why don't yo just run Prime custom 20-20K for CPU stability for a few hours and then go Blend later on. I always had good luck with 1.26-1.28 on the NB ( actively cooled ) and FSB term around 1.22-1.26 for FSB VTT. I always had loadline calibration enabled too, it really works well on the P5Q Dlx...

I am thinking to flash to a new bios and test with new settings.

I'm having some odd problems that seem to be related to the Marvell Sata driver. I am currently using a 30GB Vertex as a boot drive for my OS and I have 4 drives in raid0 partitioned up for my apps. That takes care of all of the sata ports on the ICH since there is that one in such a ridiculous spot. I also have my DVD drive on the top Marvell port and a 1TB drive on the bottom port. If I swap those I have to deal with my rig freezeing up, I can't figure out why. Now it seems to work fine the way that it is now but when I install any software to mount images I start getting these same freeze ups. Event viewer is also pointing fingers at the Marvell Sata driver. I just can't figure out what the deal is.
someone even got 500 fsb with this mainboard? ...or at least > 485 Prime 95 stable?(not spi 1 mega)....i can reach 480 very easily but more than 482 mhz seems almost impossible to me....i think its not enoug for a p45 chipset based mainboard and with 16 phases...my cpu (Q9550 w 1.2000 VID)and ram could go up much more i guess...

Easiest to get stable is to run not a 1:1 Divider, so you need high speed rams to get there. Requires some hefty FSB Term voltage and GTL tweaking to get there, but it's possible with this board... I don't test prime for 24 hours, waste of time, rig folds at home , if that is error free, I don't have to worry about 2D stability...
i've 4 gb of Patriot 1066 EPP certified at 2.1 v...already tweak GTL (0.630x-0.680x-0.660x NB) and fsb v is 1.38 (as NBV)...i use 1.1 divider(but even chaging the strap isnt useful)....but 500x8.5 i cant not even boot ...and more than 486 mhz i'm absolutely not stable..Temps are ok( 29 idle and <65 full load)...u tried at 500x9 or 500x8.5 too?

My Pro Turbo doesn't seem to want to go anywhere even with 1.4Vnb and 1.4625Vcore.... but of course, i havent gotten a chance to tweak the rest of the setting :p
Only just noticed your reply. I have replaced my enermax 500w liberty with a Corsair hx850 modular, its done the trick.
I was using really low NB and still stable. I have installed 4 16FD5 micron ballistix and so went with 1.36v Nb to be sure. I have tried getting the Vcore down a bit and adjusted the GTL ref to x0.640 on first die going from an error in LinX at 9 passes real-time to 15 pass real time error free.
I went from 2.06 vDimm to 2.08vDimm to get rid of an error using memtest for windows (about 5 hours it took error at 2.06v).

I am using 4 x 1Gb crucial ballistix 16FD5. D9GMH according to google. Other marking is CL1118F.CJ & other pair CL1118L.Z8. I RMA'ed my first set and bought another in the meantime. I wasn't happy with two installed so I bought some corsair twinx XMS 4Gb which I ran at stock for till now when I needed the ballistix again to run 5:6 divider on p5q deluxe with q9550.
Just FYI I paid £127.76 for the first set from komplett.co.uk 10/4/07 & £43.46 16/12/07 (december) from dabs.co.uk. I also paid £35.64 on 08/12/2008 for the 4Gb Corsair kit. It was June 09 when the price of DDR2 hit rock bottom.

Has anyone got big differences in bios set voltage and reported voltage? In the bios hardware monitor it show the vCore being set alot less than I selected and then with load line calibration off there is a 0.7v difference between selected and set volts.
I set 1.3825v bios for my q9550 and at in CPU-z it reports 1.35v idle and then load it goes to 1.30v.
It could work fine, at these volts until it starts rebooting spontaneously. I am trying to get 24/7 stable clocks.
I can't read the vCore with a multimeter since I don't know the measurement point, I know the points for other readings. With these 45nm chips they are not as tolerant to voltages as previous generations.
Which is correct, the bios setting or the reported voltage?
hi, can anybody confirm that they can set the multi of 6.5 for bios 2201?
why u disable the LLC?...whith this enabled the difference is small and the system more stable for my opinion ..that is my daily with vcore at 1.296v (bios and idle cpu-z) and 1.312 full load by cpu-z

Its stable now. I'll leave it like this so I can be sure but I think its got more in the tank. The load vcore is 1.3v for 3.825Ghz. I'll see what the temps look like when it gets hotter.
