Dual core opty's seem to have lost their resale/second party value in cases such as Ebay or trading forums. But the retail value from e-tailers like tankguys, newegg, & zipzoomfly has only dropped around $25 USD. The dual core opty's have been preferred mostly by the enthusiast community because of their overclocking & perfomance. And with the results of conroe posted all over the web. It has become what the community is after for the same $350 more or less, depending on which chip.
im very happy with my CCBBE now. its running 2.95 on air so im sure water cooling will give me 3 GHz. im gonna skip conroe and wait for kentsfield maybe :)
whats the point in upgrading from dual core to dual core? heh
I'm starting to consider skipping conroe myself. I've got two great dual core optys that both do over 2.8ghz on stock volts. From what I'm seeing conroe is only getting about 5-10 fps more in the games I play. And with me being SLI & not crossfire, I'd have to wait for an intel sli motherboard or use only one video card which is even more of a drop in FPS @ high resolutions. Conroe my not be worth all the extra money I'd need to spend on crossfire gpu's DDR2 etc. just to gain 10-15fps tweaked.
yeah i lowered my asking price to $350 or best offer, im also gunna add a better pic so you can actually see the stepping on the chip. The reason i tested it at only 2.2ghz is because i was only testing the chip to see if it worked properly, i didnt want to push it too hard since i wasnt planning on using it at all.

i guess everyone is satisfied with their optys atm or sold it already :p:Quote:

I'm not happy :(. I got suckered. I feel like such an idiot for not doing homework here in the forums before bidding and winning. :slapass: Opty 165 CCBWE 0607UPBW is what i got. :( I later found ou that these are the worst overclockers. I'll he happy if i can at least get 2.6 out of it, which would basically be FX60 speeds. Do yourself a favor if you're gonna buy something on ebay, do your homework before you press taht bid now button :fact:
if it's unopened try to resell it, you may lose $40 on re-shipping, but if you land a decent ccbbe or something would be worth it imhoQuote:

Same here I'm definatly skipping conroe.
I've also noticed that shops in canada have barely reduced prices for opties too. Not the X2's tho, they dropped by half. I heard that this is because the X2's only have half the cache.
only every second X2 has half the cache (or that was the case with the 939's)Quote:

youre right. 3800+ only has 512k. i remember i was considering this chip when dell had a crazy deal on it, but glad i waited and got an opty instead.
This is why you do your homework before you bid on ebay.
Opty 165 CCBWE 0607UPBW 2.4 Ghz 1.45 Volts SP2004 stable
http://www.xanadu2.net/satan666/2-4GhzOpty165.png
:(
looks like you have 2.4ghz @ 1.35v??
or
1.45 in bios 1.35 in win?
big difference between bios and win... im lucky to get .02v diff between the two, let alone .1v... might not be as bad as you think...
What load temp?
cpu-z doesn't read my voltage right for some reason. I'm running 1.45. This stupid Abit Fatal1ty AN8 (non-sli) overvolts by .2 or whatever the common thing is for this board. so the voltage in windows read 1.475 even though in bios i set it to 1.45. I was hoping for at least 2.6. SP2004 stable. So upsetting :mad:Quote:

Does anyone know how to unlock the multipliers like that guy did?
*Sigh* I want a dual opty, but prices on opty's have barely changed (in most cases you can buy two 3800+ x2's for the price of one 165 opty) .
Anyway, is there any truth in the coldbug issue? I remeber reading that this would coldbug even under water :p
you dont unlock the multi yourself. it just kinda happens. theres another XS member who had a 146 with 11x multi when it was suposed to have 10x.Quote:

that must be Nephilim selling off his freak of a cpu i would assume. i asked him how he got the 11x multi, and he said it just happened. while he was OCing something went wrong, had to reset CMOS and when he rebooted it was at 11x. and stayed there.Quote:

Unfortunately I can't do that. I had a 3700+ that did 2.65, but this opty 165 does 2.45 and it's dual core. I haven't decided which is a better performer.Quote:

big..saw you over at dfi-street...Keep that CPU going man..I think you may be able to hit 3.1ghz...would be sweet that's for sure!
Going to prime at 3060mhz with voltage with same volts to see how far it can go. I didn't change the ram speed which is now at ddr510 3-3-2-8.
I do all my tests 15hrs minimum, and if it goes past 15hrs i'll let go through to 24hrs if it can. Ok course you can expect pictures.
I know the board sensors aren't accurate, but for a reference my cpu can load up to 42-44c in a 85f room off of smart guardian. Thinking about moving my computer in the basement where its 15f cooler.
Heres super_pi 32mb & everest latency
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/2...1279et9.th.jpg
Unfortunantly though, 3dmark01 would lock up for 5secs every 10secs and would continue benching. In that process, i was getting abnormally low frames than usual.Samething happened for 3dmark03. I think its a ram issue because at ddr510 3-3-2-8 it would lock up right away, but when i set the timings to 3-4-4-8 it would lock up not as often. Kind of sucks actually because i hear people getting good overclocks on these modules, but i can't never seem to get them stable over ddr500. Which means my little 3ghz+ adventure ends here :(, sorry. Unless you guys have suggestions?
Somethings i do know from my bios:
3/4 divider
timings 3-3-2-8
(tRc) 10
(trfc) i believe it set it to (16)
max async latency- 11ns
read preamble- 8.5
idle cycle limit 16cycles
everything else is default.
I currently have an FX60, and am wondering if I will get the same performance if I buy a 165, then just OC it to 2.6? I haven't seen any benchmarks comparing the two, so it's hard for me to decide really :\
yes. you will get the same performance.
edit:
and depending on other settings (mem divider mainly) you may get better performance from an OCed opty over a FX
Thanks for the honest answer, it was exactly what I was looking for. Time to sell my 60 and get a 165 :).
What should I do, X2 4200 or OPTERON 165 ?
i say 165 with a good stepping should perform about the same if not better.
it does 2.9-3.0 sellers says.
be weary of sellers who boast how Uber l33t chips that do fx-62 speeds and above...Quote:

got a little carried away there, but just be weary, if the price is good and the seller assures you (through official(if it's ebay) channels) that it is a good stepping (something for you to decide) then you have some security at least...

results? much worse compared to 2 x dimms? if you have one of each, much diff between the bwe and the bbe?
i'd have to say the ccbbe 0610 would be the best for a 4x512 mem config. considering its the strongest and most consistent.
My CCBBE 0617 can run 4 X 512 dimms 1T but not overclocked by much. Overclocked I have to run 2T. This was using Corsair TCCD based XMS 3200XL Pro's. Never tried it using BH-5 based modules. I'd have to say the CCBBE memory controller is you best out. Gonna miss this chip, but its time to part with AMD 939 as my game pc.

Nice, I still think the 0617 will be one of the best performing dual 165's out there. Especially when the weather cools down and we see what they can do in winter. That said, the conroe chips are scoring 2800 or better in the 3DMark06 cpu test. Most I can get is 2295 using bh-5, tight timings, & above 3 GHz. With that said the opty in my opinion is no longer the best gaming cpu. Conroes seem to overclock like mad just as the opty's do. All of my remaining systems will be socket 939 based pc's due to the price versus performance ratio since AMD dropped their prices. But my gaming rig has to be top tier.Quote:

...Just kidding guys, first post and all:)
I just got my hands on a 170 CCB1E 0550VPMW. They certainly are a rather hot chip... poping the top fixed that. Now I must say first impressions are great. The thing dual Primed 10hrs+ at 2.9GHz last night, and is currently priming at 3G:D.
Before ISH removal, 2.9 was a no go, as the extra vCore needed created too much heat. The de-capping dropped a good 10 degrees of the temps, even more on what was showing as the hotter core in 'CoreTemp Beta'.
Putting my old naked 3700 to shame I must say.
Edit. as a note, it's running under a DD TDX, D5 pump, and BI GTS360. I'll get a full spec sig made up.
Welcome zarathrustra, and nice work with that one :P looks like a beautyQuote:

The very least will be 2.8ghz @ 1.4v with air cooling once you figure out what read preamble, max async latency & drive strengths the memory controller likes with your ram clocked that high or using divider.Quote:

all dc opty's are denmarks, denmark = toledo. all dc opty's show toledo in apps such as cpuz.Quote:

Got a question, I am a little new to OCing, but what are some max temps that I should see? I am running SuperPi 32M right now at 3015 MHz; and I am seeing around 46 C. Some of this can be blamed on my case which does not have the best airflow, but even with side off and box fan blowing I see 42 C.
I'd get the best airflow possible. Do not let load temps over 50C.
I plan on lowering volts from 1.52 to around 1.4-1.45 and I also plan on upgrading the two 120's that came with my Lian Li. Any other suggestions on lowering temps, without removing IHS(got to remember that I am new to this)?Quote:
