You may try some more MCH voltage if you want to keep tighter ram timings
I dont know if this has been answered before but i really need help. I removed the crazy cool heatpipe system replaced the north and southbridge with hr-05's (thermalright heatsinks) but it left my pwms with no cooler. So i butchered the crazy cool system and crimped the heatpipes of the mosfet section and reinstalled just that part. But it doesnt mount properly its a bit wobbly. And im sure someone from you many dq6 users is using an aftermarket cooling set up. Surely? Im sure this is the bottleneck of my overclock as it just doesnt seem as stable as it should be. Hope someone can help?
I was thinking, could the NB getting too hot cause that? Right now at my 24/7 clocks, on idle, the NB heatsink feels hot to the touch.
It is possible.. My nb used to get very hot, now I put a 80mm fan over it, mounted to the screws of my backplate.. http://home.comcast.net/~typhoon007/mod3.jpg
If you are using a backplate it is extremely easy to do, just need to buy some longer screws ;).
Make sure the northbridge heatsink is mounted properly and the thermal adhesive is making correct contact. Or try replacing it with some decent thermal interface material (heatsink paste) or try replacing it with a decent heatsink itself? Like the hr-05
Again can someone please help me with my aforementioned problem lol. Im losing the will to live haha
Here are some old replies in this thread that can help you:

so the people that can help you are Kondik and rbsmontemor :) good luck
Cool, i might get a little smaller fan and stick it on it
The stock NB heatsink moves really easy, every time when i'm installing something, if i bump it, its "slides" up or down..
But its using those spring loaded screws, and it must be making good contact or else the heatsink wouldn't be hot :p:
F9a for x38-dq6 is out
They seem to have made changes to the memory system. TRD also actually seems to calculate a little better finally. 2.4B strap seems to be back in F3-ish shape. Interested to see how you all like it.

I'm still stuck, and can't hardly get into windows with anything above 480FSB. I'm using the original F1 bios, would updating to F2 possibly help?
I want to clock this baby higher! :poke:
Youre kidding right ?
F1 ?!
And why got to F2 ?
All pieces of software mature over time. Probably houndrets of bugfixes between F1 and F8
Update directly to F8,- really!
On a side note isn't the 2.66d a better setting then say the 2.40b setting in the memory timing options? I have seen a few post making it sound like the 2.40b is better?
Any one know exactly what these setting do? I am having trouble getting the QX9650 Prime stable at 4.00Ghz, specs in my sig...
CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control
CPU Clock Skew Control
(G)MCH Clock Skew Control
MCH Reference Voltage Control

Hi there. I do not have the exact same board, but cooling the NB really did the trick in my case. I clocked the e8400 to 4,5 Ghz stable, but to be honest, the voltage I had to put in the cpu for that was too hight for a 45nm cpu to live longer than a few game sessions (about 1.525...). So if I were you, I'd get a decent NB cooling (or build one myself out of a CPU cooler) and then rise the NB voltage to the max, or, as I do not know your bios, to +0.25 for starters (I give'im +0.30), and do the same to the MHC voltage. In the end I would wonder what for exactly I needed 4.5 Ghz...but anyway. I see you have 3870'ers in CF too, and with the sig below, believe me, you're able to play the most demanding games of today with >35 fps. So...be gentle with that poor little bugger :)
Wow this is a long thread....I started reading but wonder if you guys help me with some questions: I have EX38-DS4 and Q9450. The board comes with F2 bios. The RAM is CORSAIR Dominator PC2 8500. I was able to run 440FSB. I then updated the bios to F3 and ran at 444FSB. I did not change any voltage. I did change the speed of RAM to make sure it wasn't over 1000mhz (sorry I forgot the exact speed). This morning I tried 446 it couldn't boot. Now it can't even boot to windows at 406FSB. Anything over 410 FSB and the pc just keeps restarts and resets the bios to defaults. Any idea what is wrong? I already cleared the CMOS a couple of times.
Also anyone knows why when I click on the "Turn off computer", the "Stand By" option is disabled? This is on XP
Another question is that on the Abit IP35 Pro, I can set the fan speed according to the temperature of the CPU. How can we do this on this board?
Also if someone can share their settings, I would appreciate it. I understand every setup is different but want to get some ideas
Thanks for your help everyone
Hi,
is this motherboard good for an E8400 or a Q9450?
And generally, is it a good motherboard?
yes
I got it up and running again. I don't know why I have to set a lot of settings manually now though. This EX38-DS4 board seems to be very picky on the RAM. Running prime for about 15 mins now on 454 FSB. Still running...
Anyone knows what's the safe settings for FSB OverVoltage Control and MCH OverVoltage Control are?
Anyone knows why as soon as I increase the MCH voltage then I can't boot?
Any recommendations for the RAM on this EX38-DS4? This is the RAM I have and it seems very unstable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145043
Tell us your config, if you want sugestions ... :)
MCH voltage can be upped till 0.35. You can also rise CPU and memory voltage to increase stability. I do not know how much you can increase the CPU voltage because the DS4 has different CPU power circuit than DQ6. Personally I do not think that DS4 can be overclocked as much as an DQ6 mainboard, because DS4 has gives lower amperage to the CPU, than DQ6. That means that if you want to overclock you have to give more voltage than an DQ6, especially that you have a quad.
has anyone messed with the GTL settings (ctrl+F1 to show the options)?
I'm trying to think of anything to help me get 4.4Ghz, im possitive its a motherboard setting i need to change.
Here i am again after a while.
The X38 did go well, i had no cold boot problems anymore with F5D.
But then suddenly my system booted at default settings and when i wanted to change the biosprofile it even did not reset the PC, i got a black screen and had to reset manually.
I was not able to change any settings and upgraded to F8.
Same problem, i did load optimise settings as Gigabyte told me to do.
I had to remove the CMOS battery and then i was able to put some overclock settings in.
Now i have the problem again, i don't want to to do this CMOS battery trick every week.
I think i will return the board now and go for ASUS or does anyone have a solution for this?
Thanks in advance.
I think he needs to do the default settings before flashing and what bios did you have before you went to f8? Sounds to me like you either one have a bad board or two have the settings wrong to be stable, or three didn't go to default settings before flashing or four jumped up the bios revision to fast like f2-f8.
I had F7D before and all was stable until i had default settings one day and i could not overcloock anymore.
Then i did reset to defaults and flashed to F8 official bios.
After the flash i did a reset defaults again, i booted and i putted in my overclocksettings which worked for a few months.
I wanted to save and exit bios, but there was my black screen again, i solved this by removing the battery.
After that i could overclock again but now i have the same issue again, settings are default, it says 2.4 ghz at boot but my overclocksettings are still in the bios, which are 3.0 ghz.
I know it is solved when i remove the battery again but i need to remove my video everytime i do that.
There is absolutely no reason to upgrade bioses in order. Eg go from F2 to F3, then to F4 and so on. If you knew a bit about what a BIOS is, and how they work, you would realize this. Just go ahead and upgrade to the latest one, they release these for a reason, namely to fix bugs.
Hi Guys,
Thinking of buying this board butnot sure what memory to get with it?
How about some GSkill 6400 HZ? I won't be over clocking much and only slightly if I do.
Thanks, Danny.
I don't know why but I am now able to get my G.Skill PC8800(2x2gb) to be stable at 548MHz. I am trying to tweak the subtimings/timings.
So far these are my settings:
Robust Graphics Booster: AUTO
CPU Clock Ratio: 9X
CPU Host Clock Control: Enabled
CPU Host Frequency(Mhz) : 411
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz) : 100
C.I.A.2 :Disabled
Performance Enhance :Extreme
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) 2.66D
Memory Frequency(Mhz):1096
DRAM Timing Selectable :Manual
Standard Timing Control
CAS Latency Time: :5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# :5
DRAM RAS# Precharge :3
Precharge Delay(tRAS) :15
Advanced Timing Control
ACT to ACT Delay(tRRD) :2
Rank Write to READ Delay :3
Write To Precharge Delay :3
Refresh to ACT Delay :52
Read To Precharge Delay :2
tRD :7
tRD Phase Adjustment :1(Auto is 5.. and not stable??)
Command to #CS Timing: : 2T
Clock Driving and Skew Control
CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control : 800mv
CPU Clock Skew Control :Normal
(G)MCH Clock Skew Control :Normal
System Voltage Control
DDR2 OverVoltage Control :+0.30v
PCI-E OverVoltage Control :Normal
FSB OverVoltage Control :+0.15v
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control :+0.15v
Loadline Calibration: Enabled
CPU Voltage Control: 1.53750V
I don't understand the tread phase adjust... When I leave it on Auto(5) it is not stable, but at 1 it is? What exactly does this do? 1-31 is a lot of options and I am not sure exactly how to tweak it.
EDIT: DRAM RAS# Precharge :3 -> 4 was the cause of the instability. tRead phase adjust is at 5 and stable now. I still don't understand exactly how to tweak this setting. Is it best to just use the setting that comes auto.. or a higher or lower setting?
So guys...my Q9450 is due in the next day or two, gonna be offline for a couple of days as i'm deconstructing the PC and doing a fresh install. I'll report back on the testing and observations. My goal with the CPU is 3.4GHz with the least amount of voltage.
Then i'll try 3.5-3.6, if i need too much voltage i'll pass, but 3.4 is a must.
hi all
im running 3ghz on air (q6600) and the temps are ranging from 55--62 maxing 100percent on prime95
what temps are you guys getting using prime95 and core temp on the q6600?
:)
im using a x38-gq6 ( version 1)
What memory strap should i use for best overclocking ability for 1:1 ratio?
A, B, C, or D? I'm using B and I'm not getting far.. i think that might be part of my problem.
Also every time i set all of the advanced timings manually to the default settings, it resets my bios and won't boot.
So, im thinking my ram settings is the cause of why i can't get pass 483FSB
:help:
EDIT: typhoon, the performance enhance can cause instability as well.. you can try it on standard.
I don't think that the memory strap at 1:1 should matter, I would think you could run 2.00D and get the best performance for your overclock. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I don't understand what the difference is between the 1:1 straps
I can try that though. I'm about out of ideas though, I'm pretty sure its my ram thats the cause. With all the advance timings on auto, it runs fine with my 24/7 settings. But i tried setting it to the defaults manually and it resets the bios with a failed post. :shakes:
The difference between the 1:1 straps is the (G)MCH strap speed. A higher speed should be faster... I don't know how much, but that is the idea. 2.00A would be easier on the MCH for overclocking.. but just add (G)MCH voltage and a higher strap setting shouldn't be a problem I would think. Could be your ram.. try out 2.00A if 2.00D doesn't work for you, since it is the slowest setting.. That will narrow it down to if it is the strap setting or your ram.
Yeah, my ram isn't exactly the best thing on the market :p:
I got it to boot once at 4.4Ghz, by removing two sticks of ram. But couldn't get her to do it again lol.
The advance timings are funny, i'm thinking with them on auto, it keeps setting itself to something unstable. But yet, when i set them to the default timings manually, it won't post. :poke:
I'll try 2.00A in a few minutes
With my ex38 none of the straps work besides for the d straps... and what is the tread phaze adjust setting for??
New beta bios are out for a number of boards:
http://www.jzelectronic.de/jz2/index.php
How's that Q9450 working out for you?, have you overclocked it?
I just set it to the D strap, it done the on/off 3 times and popped up "bios checksum error" (this error is not out of the ordinary).
I'll see if i can overclock higher now, i have a feeling its my advanced ram timings causing the problems. Because on AUTO, it automatically changes the timing when i changes other settings while overclocking.
Well.. the D strap is harder on the MCH.. try upping the MCH voltage some and see if you can boot with it :P.
I found my problem, I'm running the D strap as of right now.
But i wasn't giving the ram enough voltage lol. It needs 2.2v above 940mhz. I need to find a way to mount my ram cooler without it touching my video card since its metal. With it, i should be able to feed them 2.3v or more... maybe.
At least you found your problem :).
I am having a problem myself though. I can run my G.Skill F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ @ 548MHz and pass memtest86+ all tests.. running overnight for 7 hours.. As well as I let it run test 5 for 4 hours today while I was at work(no errors). I can also run prime95 small ffts(my cpu is stable to that). However, when I run prime95 blend or OCCT mixed, I get errors. I don't quite understand this because I thought small FFT's stressed your CPU, and memtest86 was stressful on the RAM. What am I doing wrong here? Can someone that is running the 2.66D Strap at around 1100 DDR post their settings for me? And can you guys pass these tests I am talking about?
Thats very strange, if it was me, as long as your not having any problems with your tasks and games, i wouldn't worry about it. I need to run memtest myself.
It took a ram cooler, 2.3v, and 6-6-6-18 timings to do 4.4Ghz. My ram keeps causing 3dmark to crash at 4.5Ghz.
Here are my settings aside from when i had it at 6-6-6-18
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSCF2708.jpg
anything look out of the ordinary?
I have no problem trying the out, except for the fact that I can't seem to actual find the download link for the EX-38. It's listed on that page, but no link to it, unless I am completely blind (always a good possibility...).
Edit: Nevermind, station drivers now have links to download the new bios'.
why does it have to be english? Bios are all the same, you can even change the language in most bios, ive used station drivers for the last 6 years and never had a problem , and for jk electrics , they are ok as well ,i just click on the model, doesnt matter to me if i cant read German or French on there sites.
WO HOO!...i have an Intel Q9450 in my hands!!
Batch code is L803A550, so thats what...week 3 of 2008?
The IHS seems a bit different to what i have seen before, a slightly revised design.
Anyways just checking in before shutting down and pulling the rig apart....se y'all in a couple of days!
Good luck!!!
UPDATE: I can now pass OCCT/Prime95 blend.. I guess my computer just needed to sleep overnight :).
Has any one trie these new bios out yet? I seen that they supposedly make for better overclocking..
:D
I have to say its rather ignorant to have no idea what german is. Not realizing that the bios'es they offer are in english after the link has been posted in this thread like a houndred times since the beginning,- is frankly pretty ignorant too.
Ahh suk it flamer.. Has any one tried the new beta bios for the ex38 yet was the last question for those not flaming.
Ok I said hell with it and took the dive and went to the f3a beta bios and I am on the 2.40b setting now and that wasn't possible with the f2 bios so, that says a little right there. I would like to push this bad boy to 8x450 though. I'm scared to try it but, I will. I am going to play some COD4 first though.
I just built a machine with a Q6600 and Ex38-DS4 V1.1. I tried some basic overclocking but the settings in this motherboard are completely different to the Abit IP35 Pro I had. Also the VID for my CPU is lower in this motherboard than it was with the IP35 Pro.
Also I need some help with overclocking my CPU. I usualy use AMD machines so I am unsure how to OC with this motherboard. I am wondering if somebody with the same motherboard could give me some settings to try please?
I have DQ6 sorry, I would.
Can somebody here please share a blan or advanced BIOS template so I can heal a m8 with his settings. He has earlier X38-DQ6 (no DDR3 or EX).
Actually a few pix of the overclocking pages would be great, and or maybe some of the selections available in some of the advance pulldowns, like RAM ratio/dividers and such.
Thankx in advance!
Bets place.. all your answers,
http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/revie...-dq6-blog.html
guys i have question about the memory strap A-B-C-D
I have been told that the right strap for my memory is D
So. i have to use either D2.0 or D2.66 strap only
Is this correct ? I mean can I use another strap ( A-B-C ) or no ?
Thanks
The new bios for mine "ex38-dq6" lets me get other straps to now so, I think it is more bios pickyness then anything.
I have flashed my board with the f3a beta bios and there doesn't seem to be any overclocking with the 2.66d strap. Still the same overclock here :P. Nothing seems worse though so I will keep it installed.
You can use the 2.66 or 2.0 strap.. look at the memory speed.. it is affected by the # in front of the strap. The strap only has to do with the (g)mch strap speed.. D is the fastest(400MHz), B is the 2nd fastest(333MHz) and so on. It tells you in the bios.
Howdy! :D
Richard Dower:
Here in my country every computer shop sells Q9450 but stock is empty ...
I cant seem to get any kind of stable OC around the 3.5ghz area with this motherboard. If somebody could post some kind of template I could follow for 3.5ghz with a Q6600 and EX38-DS4 I might be able to get someplace. So could somebody please help?
When wil you be ripping into the overclocking realm of this chip? I am interested in the results  I am predicting that 3.6 is the limmit due to other threads on this chip and low Multi, 450 X 8 = 3.6 if you can muster 500 fsb then maybe this is my next chip , the q9650 are to exspensive still.
I think B3 and G0 are still the better value for performance and $$$
At the moment it's overclocked on default Vocre at 3.4GHz...but i haven't stability tested at all. I just set 425x8 and it booted. I installed a fresh copy of Vista and it went fine. Dosen't mean it's stable, but at least it's holding the OC and booting.
The deafult Vcore with F9a beta is set at 1.2375V, is this correct?, also...i didn't have to increase (G)MCH or FSB voltages at all...but again the system has not been stress tested...i'll get around to all that soon.
In addition, the option CPU fine clock ratio?...it appears you can set the CPU multi to 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5x????
How is that possible?, i know you can can the multi from a range of 6-8x + 6.5 and 7.5, but how are they allowing you 8.5x?....this means you could potential get a much higher overclock if it works.
For some reason my memory bandwidth is very low, 7700...much lower then my old E6600 at 3.4GHz, it might be the memory divider...i have to check that out.
In addition, the CPU EIST fuction stays enabled even if you overclock or bump voltages, which was not the case with the E6600.
Im getting realy frustrated now. Ive spent a good few hours trying to get a stable OC in this machine. I can run 3D Mark 06 through without crashing @ 3.5ghz but I cannot get the thing to pass 30 minutes of OCCT (it only passed 30 minutes once) could somebody PLEASE help.
Im going to try 2 instances of orthos with 2 cores set for each one. I hope I get better results from that. Maybe the newest version is bugged.
The .5 addition to the devider will not allow you to get 8.5 7.5 yes aand so on but, not 8.5 that is for the step down from that one which I beleive has the 7.5 correct me if I'm wrong on the step down cpu part I might be there but it is for the cpus with a x.5 multi though. Bandwith must be memory devider / timings.

Something is FUBAR with this motherboard or CPU because I have the voltage for the CPU @ 1.45 and the CPU @ 3.4ghz but still at full load after 10 minutes I am getting a reading of 74 celcius from realtemp. I thought I may have had my CPU seated wrong or my water block was seated wrong so I disasembled the lot again and I am still getting super high temps with real temp. Thing is the Rador water isnt getting that hot. Also CPU-Z 1.43 says I have the CPU @ 3.8ghz. Somethings gone wrong somewhere.
You have to have bad mounting pressure, extremely low flow.. or something, those temperatures are way too high. There is nothing wrong with the motherboard that would cause bad temperatures.
Ill try losening the Waterblock and see if that helps.
What are the components of your watercooling? You definitely do not want to loosen it. You want it as tight as possible.
This is my water cooling kit http://www.aqua-pcs.co.uk/xspc-x2o-p...-kit-819-p.asp . I may need to upgrade it. Ive just added some water to the reservoir and got rid of any air bubbles in the loop. Ill tighten the block again.
Ive just tightened the block onto the CPU and now the temperatures are even higher when Idle its showing between 45 - 46 celcius. Ill save my settings and set everything to default to see what temperatures I get.
[EDIT] Done some testing with all defaults and the temps were still very high (Above 70 celcius on full load). Ive flashed back from bios F3 to F2 and the temps are after going down by about 20 celcius on defaults. Now The temps havent gone above 57 cellcius on full load with defaults set.
Someone pointed out that the temp on my Core#3 seems higher then the others?, seems 10C hotter then it should be, bad heatsink mounting?
