I just hope it's not dirt2, Bad company 2 and hawx :)

No doubt about that, I'm just pointing out that a giant performance delta / up-and-down scores is not an indication drivers are at fault ;)
It's a video review and I never found DH's reviews to be above average, or even average. There's very little talk about anything but performance numbers and then a conclusion which can be completely irrelevant to what they've been showing :D
Also something from the DH reviewers:
"Our Gigabyte OdinWatt 800W PSU, which is able to run two 5870's in CF, shut down when we were trying to overclock the GTX 480.
To overclock GTX 480, you need a 1000+W PSU."
dirt 2 dx 9 nvidia dx 11 equal
metro nvidia
crysis equal
resident evil nvidia
wic nvidia
baa nvidia
heaven again nvidia
far cry again nvidia and just cause again nvidia lol here i go i benched for you :ROTF:
btw most of this games are nvidias favourite there is no way ati can do better in those games
So a 5970 is still the top card. Nvidia isn't really giving me any kind of reason to stop using my friend's 5970 (lol). I don't really care about temps (I like to watercool) or power draw (1250W PS). I just want the fastest card and that appears to be the 5970 ... still.
The Fermi drivers need a ton of work, IMO, based on what little we have seen so far. The performance numbers are all over the map. It's unclear how much performance new drivers could bring - but hopefully they would at least make performance more consistent. Those Quake Wars numbers make me think they still have some serious optimization to do for their OpenGL drivers - which has traditionally been Nvidia's strong point and ATI's weakness.
Those lucky folks who picked up the 5970 (and 5870s) at MSRP at their launch really lucked out... who would've thought 6 months later, those cards would be more expensive and still be competitive
YOWZA! They should connect the heatsink to a grill... get two uses out of the card for one!
The wait for reviews has been killing me!
I would be interested to see if a 1800MHZ Shader Fermi can beat down the HD5970
I don't mean to bash fermi too bad but this is rediculous, what has Nvidia been doing for the past few yrs? I mean they invented the term gpu  but this is the best offering from them...:shakes: Are they too busy with intel to make a good gfx solution? Not to say fermi is a complete flop but Ati has them smashed on this one. Yeah fermi is a bit faster but at what cost? 100c underload, power requirements galore, huge die size. I sense alot of RMA with those temps. I'm really shocked that this is the best thing they could come up with. I guess innovation isnt part of their vocabulary anymore, or maybe it never was.

I can say that this chart's aggregate performance scores are completely in line with the previous HD5850, 5870 and 5970 performance summaries I have seen from TPU and PCGH.
According to this chart, GTX 480 is 26 percent faster than 5870. Looks like the launch date is the only thing Charlie was right about... among the approximately 150 things he said about Fermi's specifications, price, performance etc.
please add ARMA II and Dragons Age to the list of games to bench...
god, which game reviews would you like? These are all the popular games being played right now. what the hell can nvidia do if they perform good in Dirt 2, it's one of the titles AMD was so big on, they gave it free with their cards, now do you expect review sites to ditch it because nvidia performs good on it? lolzers.
do you have the polar bears covered also? :D
well 90% of them are Nvidias TWIMBP titles. I'm hoping that there would be more titles that are a little bit more neutral.
I'm not saying people aren't playing far cry 2 at the moment, or crysis warhead, which they probably aren't, but it just looks a little odd having so many titles from nvidias PR dept in.
yeah but most big PC titles are TWIMTBP anyway. to do a review, you don't pick "neutral" games, you pick popular titles that people are playing, because people don't care about how their cards perform on a "neutral" title, they care how they perform on a game they actually play.
One more thing we can look at is that Fermi actually beats its old generation dual card upon launch. Something that the 5870 failed to do in regards to the 4870x2 and is why I considered it a lackluster card upon launch.
Although the 5870 is likely faster now(I am guessing here) than the 4870x2, if we are looking at a strictly performance perspective(not in power, which it is a huge failure), the gtx480 has the potential to look more attractive from a performance perspective in the future.
The 5970 might be a better performer, but like all cards it has dual card issues, e.g profiles, inconsistent performance, microstutter etc. Its one of the reason I want to move away from my current setup. If Fermi pickss up say 15% percent more performance with drivers, it will be in spitting distance of the 5970. Enough atleast that being a 100 dollars cheaper and being a single chip(although with 10-15 percent less performance) would make it the better buy.
Totally agree. I'm looking forward to see JC2 results. I don't believe it has been benched yet. It has 3 built in benchmarks (desert, jungle/rain, city ) which I feel fairly represent different areas of the game ( for the record for those who have only played the demo, the content in the demo performs 2-3x better than some other zones in the game as the desert area is not demanding at all ) I'm a good 20 hours in to the game ( 25% completion ) and really have enjoyed it. I'll hazard a guess that the 480 will do quite well in it...
MW2 and BC2 is in the list AFAIK, he just didn't write it there.
on the other hand none of the other games prove a challenge for either card, yes BAA or RE5 doesn't too, that's why the most important results should (still) be Crysis and Metro 2033, i.e. titles that current cards have problems on.
Also Just Cause 2 is challenging too as far as I know so it'll be important too. Yeah it's a nvidia title get over it :D
I'd like to see AvP too.
ummm we wait over six monts for this ??? for fermi.....
hexus had this up, but brought it down
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=248255
I'd like to see Shattered Horizon. A good looking game, and performs horribly. :)
In fairness the majority of modern titles / engines are threaded to take advantage of multiple cores. The reality is however they don't tend to scale much if at all past 2 ( yes theres exceptions ) Try playing a healthy selection of newer games on a single core system ( or a multi core system with cores disabled ) and tell me they aren't threaded for multiple cores  Technically by defintion multiple is merely more than 1 so they aren't lieing per say. It would be a strech to claim there are noticeable gains past 2 cores though... ( which I'm guessing was your point )
I'd love to see some Shattered Horizon benches. Unfortunately nobody benchmarks it (even though it's one of the few games that could actually take advantage of all this new hardware  ) and not enough people play it (which I don't understand because it's one of the best games I have played, and I have been playing PC games since before the original Wolf3D).
lol, that makes sense. now i know why there was such a supply shortfall at 5800 series' launch: huang bought them all! :D
i'll wait for other reviews before i jump to a conclusion, but the hexus benchmarks indicate nothing overwhelming... ok'ish performance (the least you could expect from a 6 month difference) with ridiculous high power consumption.
it's a shame that nvidia's "fastest single gpu graphics card IN DA WORLD!!!" still sux big time in crysis and doesn't offer ANY performance increase at all.
i'm more interested in bad company 2 performance though.
why? just bench with 3dmark vantage. in the end, it's the same engine, isn't it?
i think cat 10.3 is WHQL too. with luck, reviewers will use them tonight when NDA is up.
I'm just rather glad of the choices I've made :) Roll on the September release of the new ATI cards :)
I don't trust in benchmarks done with beta or very immature drivers though....
Found it for you
Some of the game looks great, while some of it is very MEH. When you play it the framerates are all over the place, sometimes happens when there doesn't seem to be alot going on GPU wise.Quote:
PCGH: By now multi-core CPUs have become very popular and the number of players with such machines is rapidly increasing. Did you integrate multi-core support into the engine from the beginning?
Oles Shishkovstov: Yes, the engine was architected to be multi-threaded from the start. That's the only sensible route to go. You just cannot add multi-threading later in the development cycle or it will be horribly sub-optimal.
PCGH: How many core are supported and what is the expected performance gain from 2, 4 or even 8 cores?
Oles Shishkovstov: We support at least two cores, and up to whatever count you have. You should expect linear scaling with the number of cores, when you aren't GPU limited.
I might as well repeat myself: per watt, ATI's architecture is more efficient.

Introducing the Air Force Kit :D
A poor french first review from 01net
Nothing important on dis' except prices and availability here in France :
470 349€ (~ same price than 5870 approx.)
480 479€
Mid-april
Maybe there are some Power-Management features within the Fermi Core which did not work with the used drivers in the review.
If not - how could such an explosion in power consumption be passed on to the market. It's a complete mystery to me how a company in these days could release such a product.
I must go 6 months back and say: ATI well done
http://www.01net.com/images/533987.jpg
that is interesting.. doesnt match with Hexus review
id bet it has to do with the TSMC process giving them less than they wanted. so they have 2 options, either up the voltage and get a few more clocks to be the top contender, or keep the tdp lower and be equal to or maybe worse than 58xx cards. since they are building top dog cards, power consumption probably lost and they went with more perf, for a much higher power draw.
if people were planing on making a folding farm, they might see that undervolting would be the way to go for trying to get the most points per dollar, factoring cost of chips and electric bill. but gamers are much less affected.
kaktus1907: I think that's the case Charlie mentioned: 5870 running under DX11 but 480 running under DX9. To make 480 run under DX11, you need to force it with a console command.
Also, GS will spank FB this sunday
Whoa, those French benchmarks are very impressive for 480 if accurate lol.
[QUOTE=kaktus1907;4308411

what makes you think that evry site uses the same benchmark?
the better reviews are from real game play not timedemos.
well its looks like we have a new price > performance champ...the gtx 470 :p:
on new drivers too!
you do realize that an architecture does not determine performance per watt because it is intangible? its more of a battle of process v. architecture. nvidia has a very impressive dx11 arch but it has had trouble on 40nm. nvidia's yields dont allow them to bin gtx480's at the tdp they would like. we could see a silicon spin like B1 or gf100 implemented well on 28nm and it will be an excellent competitor.

Fermi drivers will save the day, you'll see!!!!.
By that time we all will be playing with are new ati 6 series cards.:p:
Can someone tell me what game a 5850 cant play at 1920 maxed? All this extra heat and power from fermi seems a little excessive, no?
That's stupid they have to be talking about TWO 480s SLI for this to be true OR they have a bad PSU OR they have 50 HDDs hooked up. It is 250W overclocked what 275-300W and you are telling me that a 800W PSU shutdown? Is it a POS PSU with like 15A on 12V rails?
Agree - senseless move.Quote:

Everyone is different. Many people don't give a rat's ass about extra heat and power consumption and are willing to pay a premium for the 10%-20% increase in performance. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and nobody can tell them they're wrong.
I'm still playing on a GTX 260 216 @ 1920X1200 and I'm doing fine.
Ty
Can't read French, so this is form the Google Translate of the conclusion:
Yikes, the power consumption was true... forget getting this for folding. Noise was more than the 4870X2? Well I wouldn't know, mine is under water :p:Quote:
50% more transistors, 38 watts more at rest, 102 watts more support, the GTX 480 is a single GPU card that uses the standard of consumption, heat and noise of a dual-GPU! With heat pipe that is measured at over 70 ° over a plaque that is approaching 65 ° and also a fan who reached the 3000 rpms past two minutes of testing, all in one box open, the GeForce GTX 480 should be compared on these points with the Radeon HD 5970, and not the HD 5870. And this comparison is very generous, because if you look just the noise level obtained, it is unfortunately the level of a Radeon HD 4870 X2 support.
edit: Going off the French review, the DX11 comparison actually has the GTX480 performance go down compared to 5870... weird!
Yep now it works more or less:
