I wanted to know whether 6x1 giga ocz platinium @ 1600 7-7-7 1t on gigabyte exreme could work.

OK this is strange, right now I am running linX, 200x20 HT off and everything
on Auto (temps good ~70c on AIR), if I try and set the CPU vcore manually and or the QPI/VTT voltage manually it won't even boot into Windows.
Why would this be happening?
CPU-Z voltage reads 1.312 and moves to 1.360 and back again.
What do I do??
what vcore are you trying to set? Does it change in cpu-z when there is a load or just randomly?
tried setting it to 1.37 up to 1.4
When I have it set to auto it moves in CPU-Z in windows, I can't get into windows if it's not on auto
Should I try higher?
edit: Tried 1.48 and booted to Windows, CPU-Z reads 1.44
trying QPI/VTT voltage next
edit edit:
If I change the QPI/VTT voltage when booting it only shows 4gb ram...
OK I have it running linX now (only 17mins) at 4GHz temps ~78, will have to let it go a few more hours and see how it goes.
CPU-Z vcore moving from 1.392 to 1.424 bios set at 1.48
as long as the voltage reqts are 1.65v you are fine.
if over that you might still be fine but you will be taking some risk.
I have seen it said, how official I do not know that if you keep mem v within .5v of qpi volts you are ok, but again I have not seen anything official on this.
So - what this means for example - is that if you run your qpi at 1.335v you should be able to run your mem at up to .5v above that - so 1.835v.
But again this flies in the face of the 1.65v rule that we have all heard from day one. I have run at 1.84 for oc up to 10 hrs with no harm (yet).

Since I have the same CPU and Cooler except my board is the Extreme version which I believe makes no difference, could you send me your BIOS settings, since I´d be content to run my CPU at 4GHz and in this way wouldn´t need to do a lot of testing myself.Quote:

do u guys have LLC on of off?
Well I have mine stable at 4GHz so far, Vcore set at 1.36 in bios, HT off.
@technut
I tried that, Windows does start but after a few seconds in prime Windows freezes and I have to restart manually.

OK thought I had mine stable and then I rebooted :(
Very strange thing I could reboot 5 times just fine and then the next time the overclock beeps go nuts.
I can change a few things and it will boot up just fine, then go back and change to 20x200 and it works great. Then I could reboot a few times and
all of a sudden it does the same thing.
Anyone else getting odd stuff like that with the new Bios F6a?
what did u use to check the stability before the beeps came in the picture.
i have had similar problem with other motherboards, but i found out that it was not fully stable to start with.
f6a is not bad, but my gut says Gigabyte is gonna kick off a new bios soon.
I did linX overnight 8+ Hours, before that I had rebooted a few times for Virus updates etc. with no problems.
Then in the morning after I shut down linX and checked my mail, surfed for a bit and rebooted then it went all nuts.
Right now I have it backed down to 3.8 and I am going to play around for a few days and see if it does it again.
OK bud, lets try this to get your oc working.
load f6a using qflash
load optimized settings, restart and go back into bios
change HDD to first boot, adjust hdd priority
take off the splash screen
put in ram timings and voltage manually
rest of the settings are basic as u tried previously,
this time lower the base clock to 190, and slowly work your way up working on the vcore, qpi/vtt, may be even cpu pll.
for testing you can go start the vcore a little higher then tighten slowly while checking the stability.
i have noticed that my 920 tends to require a little higher voltage then some of the others on here.
PLEASE BAN ME, or put me on probation for 2 weeks, i have the most important exam of my life coming up for graduate school and i cannot stop coming here and tweaking my board. I need help, I am too addicted to this
Anyone have a personal opinion between this board and the EVGA?
Has anyone tired the new 2000MHz GT's on the Extream yet?
No but had some ocz plat 1600 cas 7 at 2000mhz no problem :)
No more double post with F6A bios, all looks good, i am now loving this board more than ever, good job gigabyte!
ok so i finally was able to lower the vcore.
Bios F6a

TRUE is working like a dream i have a push pull going, TRUE is very good at controlling temps under load, better than it is at idle, i guess it works more efficiently due to higher heat.
Or like wolfdale, I7 idle temps aren't that accurate ?:shrug:Quote:

I just hope gigabyte fixes the sleep problem with HT off soon
I'm considering putting together my i7 920 - FPO/BATCH # 3841A 437
I'm a believer in Gigabyte after being an Asus sorta Loyalist. I really thought they made quality boards until reading a few posts in the Maximus II Formula thread, which is what I'm running my Q9650 on :shakes: (450fsb tops with it so far) I'm actually considering a new UD3R board besides a motherboard for my i7 - Now, from the track record.... how does this UD5 board hold up to its' UD3R 775 siblings legacy?
nice work!! yeah, at load the liquid in the heat pipes evaporates more vigorously thus increasing the evap and condensation effect and cooling a lot more efficiently. The TRUE is one kick ass air cooler.. I kind of wish I had held out to pick one up but they were so out of stock when I built my machine, so I got the CM V8 instead.. which has turned out to be a very good cooler also, but you can't do the push-pull fan trick with it.. well, unless you want to use a lot of zip ties. ;)
Hi folks,
How do you select the x21 multiplier manually on the Extreme?
hi Simfan
there is no x21 with i7 920 option on extreme, x20+turbo there you go x21.
Thanks for that. I just wondered because I has a Biostar board before this one where x21 could be selected on th 920 as long as Turbo was off.
Yarr!!!
Anyone know why The 4x slot and the bottom 16x slot are Orange/Peach colored?
I looked through the manual and I seen nothing about it.
I'm assuming there is a reason behind this.
82 pages!!! I would love to look through every single one of them, but for a question that not that important, I'd rather ask... And add to the pages!

so whats the magic?
With the noctua in push pull, 4.1 ht off this was my best temps running prime -
i understand he have HT off, but just take a look at your screen shot you running at lower qpi, clock, much lower vcore and lower idle temp HT off yet you hit 70º at full load "not saying thats bad at all" but thats 10~15ºc higher than technut, not even couting idle difference.
you find hes temp normal?

Subscribed--and yes I've read all 82 pages (call me stubborn). I've got a summary of the interesting tidbits (interesting to me of course) if anyone wants it.
id like to see :p:
Same, did you log any of the problems with the boards, that is what am most interested in.
throwin down some benches today. Window open, ambient is around 17C....this board/cpu still amazes me after almost 3 months.
So there has been a lot of talk bout the temps, i need to make one thing clear i did a lot of trial and error with different thermal pastes (AS5, Tuniq, TR, OCZ freeze, zalman) it was very time consuming but after about 14 hours or so i finally figured out for my self on how different these pastes are, only as regards to the temps, also i tried different ways of putting on the paste. also tried different fans on TRUE, even tried it fanless for 15 mins to see what happens. Also tried making an air duct to pull in fresh air.
In the 14 hours I tested a lot of things for fun, i didn't take extensive logs of everything, since i was interested in only what worked best. It is way too much to post all the details, i have to get back to studying, so i am going to post my final choices.
TRUE (TR 1400 rpm fan pushing, Xigma Tech XLF-F1253 pulling)
OCZ Freeze (best way to put on put a tiny droplet, half the size of a grain of sticky sushi rice or a quarter grain size of a indian pakistani long grain basmati rice)
Procedure:
put the paste
align the TRUE perfectly and dont u dare move it even a tad bit.
put two screws cross from each other, tighten all the way so u dont risk moving the HS while getting the other two in. once the first two are tight move on to the next two, tighten all the way.
now try to spin the HS just a little clockwise the anti-clock ending up in the same position. toss on the fans.
i added two additional fans a 230mm on the door, it fit perfectly, same fan as the HF932. Another fan was added along with a 5.25-3.5 cage in the front, so it make a nice air tunnel straight across front to back.
sorry if i was unclear, i am stressing about my studies, i need to get back, i will check u guys in a bit.
For temp i am using real temp, didn't bother installing ET6
Its day time now and my idle temp has risen to 40-42, guess not fully idle because i am in window.
In bios i am getting 24-26 for cpu.

how is the sli with different cards working, i was thinking bout adding a 4870 to my 4850
sure i know i will be on xfire but u r on sli
any u recommend it, right?
nice job with TRUE technut:up:
well i am not really into pc gaming right now, because i cannot really run high resolution. i can play left4dead, css and a lot of other games on max but i dont really play old games i like to get play the new games.
i am currently playing mostly xbox 360 exclusively.
if i would be able to run crysis and some other graphic intensive games then yeah i would be interested in adding another card like 4870 or even the 4870x2.
thanx man, i have used probably 10-15 high end heat sinks in the last 3 years, and this is really the best, due to the 6 heat pipes. i wish i had the copper TRUE. this raped the corsair wc setup i had 4 years ago.
From my experience tuniq, noctua, even zalman 9700 can give a similar temp when idle but under load the TRUE destroys them. at 1.4185 set in bios my cpu under 99% load for 2 hours wont go over 64-69.
another newer HS which performs on par according to hardocp is the http://www.prolimatech.com/products/megahalems.html
this thing is cheaper and the design looks wicked.
Cooler master have another monster v10 i think it costs twice as much as a TRUE. i have v8 cooling my Q6600 its very good. i wonder how good is TRUE CU with coollaboratory liquid pro 2xultra kaze
almost below 9

.001 Does not count! :P
Fantastic clocks guys. My board is out for delivery right now! I cant wait to see what I can get out of is.
I still have the same question if any one can shed some light on this. The Orange/ Peach colored PCI-E slots. Anyone know why they have that specific color?
trying to hit 5ghz...again...but running into ?cpuz 1.5 bug unless weird TDP limit issue. Booted 23x216 (4968) 3x and 3 different cpuz dumps...but cpuz says 4958 every time. I got 23x217 to boot but cpuz crashed before dumping but it to was off in calculation as well. 23x214 and below calculates correctly:shrug:. 10mhz is too big for spread spectrum differences...have never seen multi kick down at idle like that from TDP limits and cpuz is reading different than everest/realtemp, also dont understand the exact same error 3x:shrug: This is with computer outside, water temps is 1-2C (have antifreeze in loop).

Hi
First off thanks for everyone who posted here - my first overclock and I got to 21x190 on bios F5g
I flashed BIOS to F6a tonight and whilst it has cured the double post issue I can no longer get to 21x190. 21x187 seems to be the best I can get, has anyone else seen a similar effect going to F6a?
I upped Vcore to 1.425 and QPi/Vtt to 1.385 (1.40 and 1.335 on F5g) but that hasn't helped.
How does the UD5 do in comparison to the Extreme? Bout to make a decision on an i7 board today or tomorrow, thanks :)
how was the stability on last setup? any priming?
hey bud, u might have a cpu that requires a little extra juice kinda like mine. there are some folks here with very low voltages and i just cannot seem to match that either.
first of all i would suggest 200x20 vs 190x21. the first seems to work better for me.
turn on LLC
x36 x16 x8
vcore 1.375
qpi 1.4
cpu pll 1.88
Thanks for the quick replies
I tried the 1.4 qpi no turbo as suggested by technut36 and it's booted at 20x190.....will keep trying to see where I can get to. Hadn't done any priming - I'm new to all this - but it was stable transcoding video files and playing games
@SteveRo - wish I was brave enough to take my CPU voltage to 1.55
First time poster, thanks for having me. Yes, I have been following all the posts for the past few months, and its great to see lots of smart folks in one place.
Anywho, I had my i920 on a UD5 overclocked to 3.8 for a number of months and was running that for normal 24x7 operations, until I did an absolutely boneheaded move of using @BIOS to update the BIOS back at v4. stupid me.
Now, unless I leave the BIOS at "Optimized Defaults" I simply cannot get an overclock on my rig without my machine entering a reboot loop and defaulting itself automatically back to stock settings. I have been waiting for the magic BIOS update to cure my troubles... and have been using QFlash for every flash since (I'm now at 6a), but still to no avail. My rig simply wont accept any even minor bump to any setting without entering a reboot loop and resetting to default settings. :(
I just reseated my chip on the weekend just in case as previous posters described bent pins (I didn't have any), but reseating it didn't make any difference. Does anyone have any ideas? (aside from ever using @BIOS ever again)?
I'm almost happy - back to 21x190 with F6a although at higher qpi/vtt and Vcore voltages than F5g. 20x200 booted but wasn't stable.
Now, the only thing I need to figure out is why my 3x2Gb OCZ Gold memory will not run at 8x190. 6x multiplier and auto sets the voltage at 1.5 and timings at 8,8,8,22. It's supposed to be 8,8,8,24 1.65V at 1600MHz. I tried to set the voltages and timings manually but it doesn't want to know the 8x multiplier.
Anyone got any ideas to help me please?
Can you list your other settings, as Steve said, hard to imagine @bios did anything especially if you reflashed afterwards.
For example are you turning turbo off, if you were using F3 bios before going to F4, F6a etc, as F3 will need less vcore at same mhz because turbo is treated differently. And if not turning turbo off, you should need more vcore in all bioses other than F3, since F3 turbo only supports light loads in turbo versus F4 etc is true 21 multi.
But my guess is you are doing something different, or you are using auto and auto value may be different.
Thanks for the quick reply, I really cant figure else what it could have been. The only other system change is that I dropped in another harddrive since then, but I have a 650watt PSU and am only running a single 8800gtx, so I cant imagine that im out of power head room to push an overclock.
I will try to set it to a 6x memory multiplier manually to see if that makes any difference when I try to start pushing the settings. Thanks for the idea. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks RGE. OK, when I get home from work tonight I will try to post all my configuration settings for an attempted minimal overclock. As mentioned though, it seems like even the most minor change in bios causes an instability problem. But I will try to put something together.
My other thought is, if someone has the patience to help me out, perhaps someone wouldn't mind putting together a settings list for their successful overclock (even a very minimal increase that SHOULD work for everyone - not dependant on "premium silicon") using 6a BIOS for me to try out and report back on... just an idea.
technut36 I Tried X16 and X17 also timings a 8,8,8,24 and 9,9,9,27 - no combination worked :( Any other ideas? I know I shoul dbe happy with the overclock I have got but it annoys me that my memory is running under it's rated speed
Oh and I haven't been called 'young' for many years :D
2gb modules have been a problem for some folks when ocing.
You may need gobs of v.
For example my pi 2k memory - when I turn on xmp - it sets the qpi v to 1.555v!!!
Barring adding lots of voltage, send a complete list of your settings, v's, multi's, bclock, ... and lets see if anything looks unusual.
SteveRo, you saved my bacon!
So I rearranged my PSU rails, breaking up my 3 harddrives onto two seperate rails (2x500g, 1TB) and I also took out 6gb RAM of my 9 (removed 2gb modules). My first boot I just bumped up the chip to 3Gz with everything on Auto, and it failed out. But then pushed the voltages a small amount manually and perfect boot on second attempt at 3gz. Phew. I am back in business and can start tweaking upwards again.
I know what everyone is thinking, that 9GB is a bit ridiculous, but I do video editing with 1080p AVCHD files on Adobe CS4 and the memory makes my work purrr along very nicely. Now I just have to strike a happy balance with CPU clock and how much memory I will be able to support with my 650Watt Enermax Infinity.
But anyways, thanks SteveRo... a lot.
EDIT: Back up to 9Gb RAM and at 3.33. The RAM will limit my top-end of course, but I think the main issue was actually adding that other HardDrive which overloaded that one rail.
EDIT: Jumped the gun on the last edit. Weird, but i was trying for 3.60 and couldn't push it. Now it refuses to overclock altogether again. I didn't perform stress testing at 3.33 w 9GB, but was able to boot to Vista and post on this forum. Now nothing again. Perhaps its RAM. Will try to pull out some DIMMS again and go from there.
