I've just flashed to the F8 BIOS and I've noticed a new entry named: "Fine CPU Clock Ratio for 45nm [+0.0][+0.5] " Any idea about what is it? If I set it to +0.5 the resulting speed in BIOS is 400x9.5=3800 Mhz. But once in windows CPU-Z reports 400x9=3600Mhz. I have an Intel e8400.
Thats for CPU's like the E8500, that comes with a multi of 9,5. You would have to have an unlocked cpu (ES or EE) to be able to set that setting manually.Quote:

Guys I have just got some G.Skill 1066 ram 4gb kit and I am running 400 mhz fsb for 3.6ghz.
For the life of me I cant get a 1-1 ram to fsb ratio and getting poor Everest results because of it, at the moment I am running the D strab I think to get 1066 or was it be I cant remember. Has any one got any ideas on how I can keep my cpu @ 3.6 and get my ram running at 1-1 for good read write speeds?
I am running the latest F8 final bios.

Turbo seems to set the performance level to 7, as opposed to 10 for standard.
I had to slowly crank mine up to get it to do 3.21Ghz~ I know I can get plenty more but, it did not like me just cranking it up to that from the original setting of 2.4Ghz, it's like you have to show it that it can do it then it stops being cranky. I will continue my fun tonight. I had to get some slepp last night and it was 1am when I went to bed.
I tried the RAID5 array, but restoring from Ghost, the RAID5 array would take 70hours (3 days) whereas the RAID10 array took only 5 hours. There is a big difference in performance if Windows is not running, I'm presuming to assist with the parity calculation. If left to the ICH9R, the RAID5 performance is doggy. (But it's pretty good in Windows).
Anyways, my system is now back to a "fully operational" state.
I put the Kill-A-Watt meter on it and with the "Dynamic Energy Saver", underclocked, it works out to be about 10W for a QX6700.
Overclocked (and overvoltaged) I'm expecting about 30% higher, but still that's pretty meager overall, so other than things such as fan noise, 10W-15W out of a total of 280W (as read by Kill-A-Watt) for my entire system (2 20"LCD, Corsair H X620, 5 SATA HDs, 2 DVD drives, 8600GTS), is less ~5% savings. (The fact that the CPU is cooler helps the fans stay quieter which is a plus for the power saving feature.)
So, while the power savings is a step in the right direction, I think right now it's more gimmick than significant.
However, the board is super stable. Compared to my D975XBX2, the EX38 POSTS quite a bit faster, boots faster (not sure why this is yet), comes out of suspend properly (YEAH!!!!!), and doesn't have the dead-keyboard on cold boot issue.
Overall, I'm thrilled with motherboard so far!
The only negative I've found thus far is that the Realtek HD audio is incompatible with Cisco Softphone 2.0. (whereas it worked with the onboard audio on the Bad Axe 2) This does suck, but I can resort to a USB headseat till I figure out a fix.
I should add, one of the reasons for me picking this board is the onboard COM and LPT/ECP ports.
I had some old IDC to DB9 cables from ISA card (I did say "old"). The first ones I tried were wired incorrectly for the Gigabyte motherboard, but I did eventually find one that was wired correctly.
What I couldn't find is a correctly wired IDC to DB25 for the LPT port. I have a cable that matches the gigabyte motherboard pinout except 1 wire is in the wrong position. (Pin24 "not used", is swapped with Pin26 "ground wire" on the IDC).
I'll probably end up just recrimping the IDC and flip the wires at the IDC end.
Alright, i need some suggestions.
About three times now when I'm playing COD4 i get a hard lockup (within 30 minutes to an hour). First i though maybe the CPU isn't getting enough juice, but now orthos has been running for two hours and still going, so i'm pretty sure thats not it. i have already raised the G MCH voltage from +0.025v to +0.05v (on auto, it would freeze within 5 minutes in windows). So now i'm not sure whats the cause, i even tried lowering my gpu OC. So the only thing i can think of is the G MCH may need more voltage or the ram (currently 5-5-5-15 / 2.0v / 890mhz)

This is getting a little more interesting....
Overclocked, without DES, the system shows about 50W CPU power.
With DES (power saving) on, this drops down to under 20W.
So 30W savings, and a quieter fan. That's getting a little more worthwhile!

To use the Turbo setting it depends on your RAM, RAM ratio, and Vmch you're using. If you hesitate to use Turbo mode try run @ 4-4-4-x latencies.Quote:

Also, I got my electric rate wrong originally.
I checked my utility bill and it's just about $0.11(US) per kW*hr (winter electric rates)
So 30W savings is actually $28.50/yr for 7x24 operation.
(30W*24h*30days*12mon*$0.11/1000=$28.50)
Include AC rejection of that heat in the summer and higher summer electrical rates, and it's probably ~$50/yr.
Still not huge, but starting to add up.
I have a server that's on 7x24 and at $50/yr electricity savings, I'm starting to think about replacing the motherboard with something that has power a power saving feature.
Same heatsink as mine, you using a Delta fan?....isn't that 38mm thick?
ESATA as well?...looks like you've got 6 HDDs, maybe a little cable management wouldn't go amiss :-)

The ESATA ports are pretty useful, but I usually don't have an external HD connected.
I have 5 HDs. 4 in Matrix RAID, and 1 as temp drive. (No swapfile).
I edited the registry to put the temp "garbage" on the single drive to prevent disk thrashing.
eg. TEMP, TMP, Temporary Internet Files, Local Settings/Temp, downloads, etc.
The last SATA is connected to a DVD drive.
Thanks for the note about the unlatched DIMM. I'll check it next time I power down my machine. I remember vividly snapping them all in and putting the tabs back up when I installed them, but maybe i accidentally bumped it with the cable management. ;) When things get running and I don't forsee any more tweaking, I'll use velcro straps to neaten things up.

Well I've been reading this thread for a bit over a week now, off and on.
Got in the ex38-DQ6 board as a replacement for the x38-DS4 that ended up dieing from a bad flash.
I've got a few questions on this, know I won't recall them all so they will prolly come up over a few posts.
1st, what is the major differences between the jmicron and the intel (purple/orange) sata ports onboard?
2nd, has anyone used Dinos bios revision he posted a link to?
I am not sure why everyones been changing bios' like they were going out of style, so far I've been using the one that came on the board, think it is F1.
I've been able to get 7x490 on this with minimal problems. I've had a few problems with tweaking the memory, but odds are that is just me not fully comprehending what it is I am doing with it, still working on that. :shrug:

I have noticed that when I try to crank my PCIE Frequecy up to give my card more juice that the Intel Raid controller stops working what's up with that? I crank it up to 125 when this happens. I have the EX X38 DQ6 and I have left my Bios at the default revision as well as far as the last question goes so, I don't know what difference it will make if any but, their site says it fixes Overclocking stability and memory performance issues but, mine seems to be ok so far IMO.

I had read some where to crank it up to 125 for the 8800gts 512 which I have and it will get better performance but, these boards obviously won't handle it. I was having issues with my Raid0 dropping as well so, I went back to just one 250gb drive and a 500gb external. I shot a couple of pictures to post here after slicing my damn fingure open bad,,, cutting the wire ties. I will post it in a little. I have a pretty sweet setup. I kept dropping my damn raid with 2 new western digital retail,,, 250gb 16mb chache drives that I bought, I'm pretty upset about that because I have never had any issues out of my old config of a 250gb and a 160gb in raid0 same company western digital and I get two new identical ones and have hell getting them to stay in array.

New bios add features and fixes issues...but it can also introduce new problems as well.
125MHz on the PCI-E frequency seems dangerously high to me...i'd not go past 110MHz IMO.

Btw...i *finally* got this program to work, SuperPI won't run on Vista, HyperPI needed services disabled to run, as you can see.

There seems to be (a myth) that increasing PCI-E frequency gains higher speed, i've not seen it myself. The 9600GT seems to have this thing whereby it increases the frequency and gain higher clocks...it's being discussed on the news section.
But in general i don't belive PCI-E adds much to the party, I think setting Turbo overclocks the cards GPU and memory...i think. I always leave that on Auto myself. But then someone suggested Auto also overclocks...but GPU-Z says otherwise:

Which LEDs the fans or the new ones they implimented on the board where the plug used to be on my old P35 DQ6? I'm not gonna lie I couldn't figure out how to get my Fiance and I's camers to stop flashing :ROTF: . I tried it just wouldn't stop flashing it's a new camera so,,, it's nice but alot of options. I haven't tweak my memory all the way yet but I do have it running at the 2.~d @ 1069 and my Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and 1.3625v!!!!. I just did my first 3dmark06 run and it was more then happy to run through it and usually if the cpu doesn't have enough power going to it it will blue screen on the cpu test part. I had to give the cpu like 1.55v on my old p35 dq6. This thing is amazing. I tried to get my cpu to 4Ghz which was easy with my p35 and no go. I might have pushed her to many times,, I don't know and may never. Unless some one here says try these settings, I don't think I will ever get her past 3.65Ghz.

I noticed since the first day I've had this board that in everest the Dimm1/2/3/4 Clock Fine Delay seems to change alot for no apparent reasons. It doesn't seem to affect performance much either tho, atleast I didn't see a difference when it was low or high. But I'm wondering what controls this and how, I think it's related to the performance level and the "Turbo/Extreme settings" But I also noticed the values changing just overnight without having altered anything in the bios. I have noticed that all the memory settings below the normal ones like to change all the time to but, I will say this,, they did the same exact thing on my GA-P35-DQ6 that I just RAMed because it died on me. Any way, I actually thought that I had my issue with getting my GA-EX38-DQ6 to push my Q6600 to 4Ghz resolved, and I was wrong. I upped my voltage to the mch to +.50 and it got stable or seemed that way at 3.85Ghz and then became unstable again. I'm just wondering if the board is unstable or the CPU is going out on me. I am going to be getting a new one when the Q9450s come out so, I willl deffinately know when I get that.
Your sig shows you are running Vista 32 SP1, I can run SuperPi no problem at all on Vista 32 without SP1, is this just something related to the service pack, or did it never work on your Vista build?Quote:

increasing the pci-e freq does result in better performance although the difference is minimal. you are correct in saying anything over 110mhz is pushing it, and you risk damaging components. if you run 3dm06 @ 100 mhz and then run it again @ 110 you will see a difference of up to 100 3dmarks. Its a small difference but when you going for just that little bit of extra it can help. Also running at 115mhz or 120mhz just for a bench would probably be OK, but its no good for 24/7.Quote:

Here you go and I got over the hump on the board I'm about to try 3dmark at 3.93Ghz~. This was the best it would come in because of the glare from the leds sorry.

Ok here is my link to my score. I got 15796 with a single card setuo at that speed with Vista Ultimate no updates.. 64 bit. I will do updates and see if it changes. I might be able to get service pack 1 now.

Ok I installed service pack 1 and I must admit they improved the performance in Vista by a decent amount I was getting 15400 with everything setup the exact same way as when I just ran it this time @ 3.6Ghz and the Video card tweaked and this time with the sp1 I got a wopping 150 more points 15550~. I don't have time to tweak it back up to 3.93Ghz tonight but, I will deffinately soon and post again my 3dmark score from that one. Good night, and I will post what settings I used if people like to.

Whats all the excitment over a Led? its just a light, its on there for pple that work with extreme cooling and High clocks running a naked system. Nothing to be excited about.
I just flashed to the F8d bios and noticed something bizare with my E8400 in the M.I.T screen, it shows a 9.5 multi just like that of an E8500 and also displays the projected overclock like (500x9.5=4750) but does'nt enable the 9.5 multi within windows:confused: anyone seen this too?
I'm not that excited, I just thought it'd be cool if there was a way to turn them on when overclocking... Whats wrong with that? :)

No they turn off after you get through the startup. I took that pic in the middle of tweaking the settings in the bios. It will stay on when you are in the bios settings page. I like the board but, it is still buggy that is for sure. I now know how to get it up to speed but, it is stubborn as hell. I have noticed that after getting it up to speed around 4Ghz that when you want to bring it back down it has issues like say going down to 3.6Ghz from the 4ghz it starts getting unstable and yet when you reset to the optimized defaults then speed it up in 10Mhz increments it only takes 1.3625v to make it happy at the 3.6Ghz and it doesn't need any bump literally until that spot is hit. I couldn't get it to stay stable coming down from 4ghz unless I reset to optimized then stepped up. Kind of weird but, that's what it takes. I still haven't tweaked my memory settings yet I just set them to a spot that I knew I couldn't be having issues with the memory so, I could jack the cpu up and only have to give it Voltage when it became unstable.

.FSB +.25 MCH+.20 Processor now 3.6Ghz 1.38v~ DDR2=2.1v @ the Factory voltage. Cpu to PCIE=1000Mv. I added my sig for helpful info.

SO guys, is this THE board to get? I'm hoping to get my q6600 24/7 stable, somewhere around 4,1 - 4,2 GHz.
This or the x48-dq6 are very good overclocking boards. They cannot make your cpu any better than it already is... so I must say you are dreaming really big about getting 4.1ghz-4.2ghz on a q6600 on any board. 4ghz is hard on a q6600.Quote:

As a result, I went back to 450X8 (3.6Ghz). I wasn't very confortable with the 1.45 vcore, not for 24/7 anyways. However, now I get almost the same memory speeds in benchmarks I was getting with 3.8Ghz + 1140Mhz RAM so... I'm happy with the way it is running now :)

I have my q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and my memory set to 2.66d. I will say this though I have to reset my over clock every so often because I think that this bios is still buggy and I figured what the hell and messed with the cpu lead setting and boyy let me tell yah right now don't touch that setting,,, my bios went into recovery mode and my heart dropped. I went back in and set that setting back to normal needless to say but wow that was a scare. Any way here is a screeny of all my setting goodness and my gpu z screeny along with all my other goodieness for everyone to look apon :P.

Sadly there is no support for Quad Core Xeon...which is a real shame as those CPU's might be easier (and cheaper) to find rather then the Core 2 Duo chips.
The Harpertown Xeons are LGA771. Do they fit (& work) in a LGA775 socket?
