Hey everyone, just got my water-cooling done. Now the fun begins.
So I am kind of new to the Q6600 but all I did was 400x9@3.6 and set the vcore to 1.3825 in bios, 1:1 ratio, 4-4-4-15@800Mhz for ram @ 2.150 and it fails prime95 in about 10min but temps ~45c, is this temp good for WC? also Should i give it more vcore? Do I need to change any settings besides the vcore? how about the cpu vvt?

On a side note temps seemed to have gotten better with loadline calibration on and the actual vcore applied to the cpu.........:confused:

Anyway, just for all people to remember. At 400 FSB and above, the NB is a major limit on many boards. So, a test with OCCT in RAM mode is vital for your stability testing (not really related to the CPU though). Blend doesn't reveal the NB limitations well

I don't know where to place this question, but if anyone is interested on selling a good Q6600 G0 batch that makes at least 3,6 with less than 1,4 vcore bios i will buy it. Here in Uruguay are terrible expensive and I only had the chance to bought one, mine does 3,6 with 1,475. I've seen some wonderful L737B and others...
So if anyone is planing to sell to go for a penryn or something please tell me. I will pay it as new.

Recently came from Amd 6400+/Asus Crosshair
Now have Q6600 + Asus P5E (Pencil Mod)
Changed fsb from 267 to 333 to make it QX6850 Speeds
Auto voltage was 1.35V but is stable so far at 1.25V
My question how low could i go prime95 stable?
Should i raise other Volts to compensate for lower Vcore?
P95 stresses cores more=>higher temps, drawing at least 12W more in my testings than others have (not incl. the 'ol CPU Burn and TAT). Usually caught a failure when others failed so I use it as one of my initial stability tests (many more after). I would use any other had they proved just as good or better.
My 1.2375VID 1.2V stock Q6600 G0 L739A has been rigored under stress today. ;)
Like the versions I had before, too hot at stock, needs noisy high fanspeeds or expensive cooling to keep decent load temps at even stock. At the fanspeeds I like it topped 64C at stock with 22C ambient outside of the case. Imagine 30C inside the case, or heck, summer. :(
Right now, I'm priming 1.28V idle/1.264 load 3.3GHz on air with one fan at high speed. Seems solid, I doubt it'll fail: 2hr10m passed 50C, 50C, 54C, 54C so far.

Bleh...I've got to lap my Ultima 90. There's a square full of scratches right in the middle of the heatsink albeit fine scratches. It wasn't there when I first opened it, meh. Clocked it to 3.6 @ 1.375v but it was too hot. So, sticking at 3.2 @ 1.25v for now. Getting 38-40 idle and 60-64 on load.

Todays testing with new P30 bios. I installed the Evga p30 bios cause the
p31 was acting weird . It seems to be alot better! On the p31 I had my vcore at 1.56 v core to get this OC to do prime, now its at 1.36 v core. All seems well so far with this clock an bios. My vcore goes up when I load the cpu according to cpuz with this new bios :shrug:
Ive had this up to 475 x 9 boots at 1.50v but not even 3dmo6 stable till 1.62v an nowhere near prime95. But with the p30 bios Ive yet to try to see if that changed also.

Those temps are exact same as mine at 3405MHz 1.312V 5hrs P95 with only one fan Zalman 9700 with 6C higher case ambient than yours. 1.28V gets a little lower temps stable.
There's a problem with my setup. Whatever Vcc above 1.28V I set in BIOS, it keeps dropping to 1.28V under load, 1.3, 1.32, 134, 1.385. That didn't happen with the E6750/E6850 I tried last. 3.45G is around max stable with 1.28V idle/1.264V load, more MHz and Core3 will fail instantly whilst the others don't till at least 3.605G that I tested. But volts for 3.6G stable seem high, maybe past 1.4V actual. I'll try it soon but I'm scared of the crappy temps and power I'm expecting. :p:

Whats your load voltage? Mines lower VID than yours but 3.2G 1.2V is about tops stable. Benchable is higher but that doesnt bother me. Bloody temps, mine will freeze at 74C, heh. :eek:

Q6600 OC Problems
For the life of me I can't get it to run at 400x9 1:1, the best I can do is about a minute or two before I get a BSOD vista.
The best stable I'm able to do is 435x8 @ 1.45v under water, and it runs a bit hot.
I've tried dozens of configurations found in this forum, I've mucked with just about everything. I'm suspecting some sort of memory problem because I'm running 4x2gb DDR2800.

Benched upto 4.2GHz, 4.25G 1M should be fine (don't care about it).
Around 10MHz more was attainable but never saved it before I went higher and haven't tried again. 1.65V real will get 4.3G bootup easily but I can't risk the chip and by that time my PSU OVP kicks in and shuts down the system.

Power draw/heat is too much for me to try more than 1.36V, ever. And everything passes +3hrs P95 (that I tested) at 1.30V for 3.6G but core3. It fails even at 1.328V, only 1.344V load will stabilize it fully and which means 1.360V idle. :(
1.28V benches 3.6G easily and 1.392V benches 3.84G and 4GHz easily that I tried. Stability definitely requires more than my cooling capability.
Just for everyones reference; it's good to know some solid tested facts ;)
With this chip I need (all I've properly tested thus far - my full stability stated means sub 65C >8hr P95 load temps, videoing, gaming with just the 1 HS fan and >22C heatsink ambient):

Currently running this Q6600 (G0) @ 3312MHz, 368FSB and needs atleast 1.31-1.32V (1.340V @ bios) to work on these speeds.
With stock volts it barelly hit 3GHz barrier and FSB wouldn't go even over 350 (BSOD @ boot). :(
I do know having 4 memory sticks doesn't atleast help this matter. "Bad" chip (like always) that needs alot more Vcore to work higher speeds.
Which causes bit of issue with temps. 43/43/38/42 usual idle temps and load temps goes way over 50°C already.
Current case cooling needs improving and Zalman ain't exactly best cooler either. Case coolers are still original Antec's that came with P180, but gonna replace them something better and more silent soon.
It was even worst with old case...
Wanna push it bit higher than currently and i know these Corsair sticks can do atleast 442 (running 1:1.2/5:6 even now). System is running 24/7 and looking for max 24/7 stable speed can get. :up:
/\ pull 2 of the 4 sticks out then retry.................also dont be afraid to bring FBST up to 1.50 and NB voltage to 1.50.......
Also just a little tip........its always a good thing to follow this procedure.......
Drop cpu multiplier, drop ram via divider both below stock speed.......max the FSB on the board with prime and fine tuned voltage adjustments (less is more) till your at least 12 hours stable.
Next bring your CPU up.......find its max as well same method......
Drop cpu multi again and find the max of your ram via the same methods.......
With voltage imho less is more.......No sense in cranking the voltage up, fine tune it, get it stable with the least amount possible......
Once you've done all that put it all together.

are some batches just hit and miss? i have L726A and i can't get anything beyond 3.2GHz prime95 stable. searching around here i see some people saying this is a great batch, and i also see other people with crappy oc's like mine.
i started on a 680i and wasn't sure if it was me or my motherboard. now on abit ip35 pro... i can definitely get windows to boot at all kinds of clocks that wouldn't even POST on the 680i, and my temps are a lot better, but i still can't get anything stable beyone 3.2 on either chipset

For people who hit 4.0ghz.. does it require any voltage upping besides the vcore? MCH? CPU VVT?
What vcore do most people use to obtain the 4.0ghz OC? I am in the process of trying to break the big 4 :)

I need +0.175V MCH and +0.2V FSB and 1.39V VCore for 4GHz bootup. That's fully benchable without error but not stable, need much more VCore for stability but on a better board, it won't do because on my MB 1.392V BIOS is 1.372V idle OS and 1.344V load, which is what screws everything up. :(Quote:

This Q6600 + DQ6 has a FSB wall around 470Mhz. This same Q6600 can prime @ 510Mhz FSB on P5E3 :(

This CPU is a beast. I can run 3dmark06 at this setting with only 1.58v, but sometimes it would crash on CPU test. The sad part is when I discovered that this mobo has bigger Vcore intervals after 1.60v. A pic to make you understand:

Out of the box I changed the FBS to 333x9 in bios leaving all my voltages on AUTO. I can run 3.0. I ran prime95 for about 1hour without any crashes.

Go into the BIOS, change VCore (CPU voltage) to an option at or between 1.25-1.28V, change FSB to 355, save and reboot. IDR your RAM options as in how they're set out, but set your RAM divider to 2:3 for DDR2-1066 at the above setting feeding it 2.2V at 5-5-5-15-30 2T for now.Quote:

Simple, but just take your time and read up online about oc'ing Core 2's.
Heres a link to an overclocking guide to get you going http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overc...s-p5k-add.html. Use the settings in BIOS - dont bother with windows utilities. First thing I do is disable Q FAN cos I want it as cold as it can be!. If you want to overclock on up to 3.6 or above you probably need a better cooler - the Arctic 7 is good but not good enough for the 4 core temps on load at higher overclocks withmore vcore(1.4v plus). I changed my arctic 7 for an Ultima-90. http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...oc.aspx?i=3068 Great performance from a nice small form cooler that you wont have a problem fitting in most cases. If you can get there with less volts the Arctic 7 may be okay - you want to aim to try and keep load temps as low as possible. Running 3.6 they tend to be around 60c upward prime load with good air cooling. After you have read the guide and this thread You will soon be an expert-lol!Quote:

A friend of mine just got a Week 40 Chip, and "B264" on the end, Q6600 with a VID of 1.1625v!!!!!!! The worst part is, he's not an overclocker!!!!!!

What did you dump the Crucial for - Its D9 chips and a great overclocker. You weren't pushing it near what its capable of. At the FSB you were on running 1:1 you could probably have had it on CAS=3. Buying Mushkin 2x2GB isn't going to give you anything over them unless your MB has problems with 4x1GB cos it put more strain on it. I suppose it give you 2 spare slots but 4GB is really all thats needed under Vista - there are hardly any standard apps that utilise upto 4gb let alone any games. By the time we need more we will all be onto DDR3 anyway-lol!Quote:

Just seems that the crucial memory is hit or miss of good dimms. My boss RMA'd his 2 times now.
Right away I noticed a 2deg drop in temps with 2 sticks vs 4.
Plus I have ALWAYS used mushkin in the past with great sucesss. Plus this is CAS 4. vs crucial cas5.
All in all its about lowering Temps.
I rewired my Antec 900 last night. Moved the Double Fan Bay to the top so the CPU is getting hammered with 2 120mm fans intake, 1 120mm exhaust, plus the 200mm exhaust.
The other fan is on the hard drives at the bottom... Plus there is one on the side door.
Temps Now:(2x1gb)
Full Load Prime95: 52 50 50 51
Idle Temps 2min wait after full load: 31 27 27 30
Before:(4x1gb)
54 51 50 50 full load
31 30 27 27 idle.
It seems with the double fan slot on top temps dont bobble or jump around as much. It sits solid at idle or full load without jumping too much after it warms up or cools down.
I still need to rewire the case again. I am not happy with it. I gotta borrow my buddies dremel tool to cut some holes and re-run wires. It could be better. ;)
I need a nicer power supply that I can run custom sized wires, any suggestions?
True - the ballistix do tend to due every so often but have good crucial warranty . The run 4,4,4,9 upto 1066 no problem. Well I got my l737b at 3ghz 9x334 @ 1.2 vid 8hours prime stable with average 48-50C coretemp. When I try to get 3.6ghz with 1.3vid this beast gets hot quick with 80c with the Tuniq Tower at full blast. I know the l737b are good clockers but are they known to get really hot fast with extra volts?
hmm my L737B242/ VID : 1.2125 , runs pretty cool man:X dnno why. Was priming small ffts 12 hours+ 3.6ghz ( 400x9)@ 1.288vcore stable, with Thermalright 120 Extreme/ push pulled, by Zalman FM3, and my temps was all the time 50-52c, then for 3.825ghz (425x9), primed also small ffts 12 hours and temps was: 58-60c... according to coretemp. Both my heatsink and cpu were unlapped....

is it typical for lower vid cpu's to heat up faster at lower volts rather than higher vid cpu's? i have a 737B668 VID 1.325 and it @ 1.64 it gets to 66C when running occt... this one is hitting 70C right now during testing. :shrug:

Hmm well I can get 3.2ghz Prime stable with only 1.25v load, But atm Im still working on getting 3.6 stable. I can get 3.85 3d bench stable, but I was hoping to get 3.6 stable with low voltage for 24/7 use. Well I'll see how it goes, Im up to 1.32v load, hopefully it's stable now.
my q6600 has a vid of 1.2125v but runs so hot!!!!

Well it wasn't stable at 3.6ghz with 1.32v load, now I am trying 1.34v load, and I hope it is stable...
Don't know, I've asked before, but I never got a straight answer. My ambient is warm, I'm only guessing but about 25-27, and with prime running at the moment, 3.6ghz and 1.34v Load, my cores are around 56 degrees
EDIT: up to 1.36v Load now. It would seem this is not such a good chip.

EDIT2 : I for now will call this stable @ 3.6ghz with 1.35v and under 60 degrees on the cores. Just under 2 hours, but I will continue and let it go over 2 hours, I dont bother much after that, if its under 60 degrees and stable by 2 hours, it will never crash for everyday usage.
People can you all post your Q6600 OC like this ?

wow some nice clocks on low voltage with these new batchs. I should pick another up before they are gone for folding, and put the new batch in my main rig. 1.3v @3.7ghz and stable is very good.

This chip is stable @ 3.689ghz max @ 1.44v, 3.6 the same or a little less. anything over 3.7 needs to much voltage imo for air, the extra 100mhz isnt worth the degraded life, especially since it runs F@H quite often, need to replace with a new batch, and retire this quad to F@H only in my shuttle case on top of my cabient.

FSB wall hold me on that, giga X38-DQ6 has serious problems overclocking FSB on quads...same CPU did 510Mhz on P5E3..prime stable.
