Hello, just bought a 2x1Gb Mushkin xp2-8500 kit to match my 2x1Gb Mushkin xp2-6400 kit. Both these kits separatley do 500Mhz with ease but together anything over 400Mhz is a no go, no mater what timings, voltages or memory slots I use.

So I wonder, is this a problem caused by the two slightly different types of modules or is it a problem caused by using 4 memory modules in my P35-DS4 mobo??? I dont want to buy an extra pair of XP2 8500 if the problem is mobo related.

So input from users with 4x1Gb memory above 500Mhz would be very nice.

dont bother chaps,ive had a go myself at changing the bios to f8 from f6.
saved the bios f6,and the f8 went well.
ive now got my psu voltages.

I have the DS4 Rev.2.0 f9b. I had 4x1GB of Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 running fine at various speeds/timings/voltages:
450MHz (DDR2-900) 4-4-4-12 2.05V
500MHz (DDR2-1000) 5-5-5-15 2.00V
562MHz (DDR2-1125) 5-5-5-15 2.20V

Now I am running 4x2GB of G.SKILL PC2-8000, but I haven't really experimented with them much...they are currently running at 400MHz (DDR2-800) 4-4-4-12 2.00V.

I tested all these settings on the f7b and the f8b and I'm currently working with the f9b (which has known memtest86/86+ problems - see the previous page of this thread), and I have not had any problems.

i have vdrop but no vdroop, vdrop is when you set a voltage in the bios and get lower voltage than you set, but vdroop is when your vcore changes from idle to load, so what i was trying to say was that i had vdrop, but no vdroop, sorry for the confusing post:D

ya there is something weird about the vdroop, when i got the board the first while it was mostly 0.016 with spikes of 0.032v and then after a while and now it is rock stable and i havent touched anything. :confused:

Before: 1.3v BIOS Idle 1.248v Load 1.232v / 1.216v
After: 1.3v BIOS Idle 1.248v Load 1.248v

However, I couldn't figure out a way to protect the pencil graphite from dust/airflow. The mod failed to hold after trying scotch tape and silicone grease over the resistor. I went to Fry's and bought silver micro conductive pen and here is the result:

1.3v BIOS Idle 1.280v Load 1.280v

With vdroop mod, I'm now able to get 3.2Ghz (400x8) using default 1.3v and best of all - able to enable C1E & EIST.

Idle: 2.4Ghz (400x6) Vcore 1.152v Core0 27C
Load : 3.2Ghz (400x8) Vcore 1.280v Core0 51C

i didn't have to do this with my board to get no vdroop, but my board is also a rev. 1 so maybe that makes a difference

Well Bios f9 seems to have first caused ram errors then killed two sticks of ballistix Lanfest ram, and somehow it has either confused windows into not finding my ethernet or killed it aswell. I went back to F7 and all is well except for two dead sticks of ram and a dead ethernet. The lan has power and the modem has a solid green connection but it just won't work . I tried a new cable because the bios has a cable test for the ethernet / lan and it's not responding at all. WTF. This is my last Gigabyte. I may RMA this board and when it returns sell it. It is a full featured board that overclocks like hell but man all these problems. I even tried to reflashing the bios, upgrading the chipset drivers, then reactivate the ethernet adapter ,without any difference. Then I tried reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows on my second hardrive, unplugged the first hardrive, reset the bios and boot with the fresh copy of windows,still no ethernet found. I'm using a USB connection now and ordered a 7 dollar ethernet adapter. Still this is B.S because Gigabyte has no advanced rma so if I return it I will be without a computer for 3 weeks. Anyone have any Ideas about this lan problem.

This all happened using F9 and in a very short time. I don't believe these memory errors are false positive I think this bios killed my ram.

Using 2B pencil? A few lines won't do it. I practically had to color the resistor from end to end. Be sure to clean up pencil dust around the resistor. I got lazy once trying to add more pencil while the system was running with CPU-Z and Speedfan. The system powered off pronto but no damage (I think) :D

I've been running F9 since I got the board, and while it is nothing special it seems compared to F6 which I got stock (but didn't test at all) it hasn't killed any of my hardware yet. Just wondering if I should use F5 or upgrade to F10... They don't even have F5 on that page anyway for whatever reason.

I have been running F9 since it came out on three DS4s and a DS3R Folding 24/7 and have not killed anything since I reduced my RAM voltage to +3, so far so good...

I've actually used +0.4v briefly on the RAM - what exactly was the issue with it?

Interesting, but I'm not sure it should all be blamed on the BIOS, maybe you just got a bad board. I've been running F9 for over a month, and the only problems I've seen are in memtest. I switched back to F8 briefly (as you read above), but re-flased to F9 shortly after to continue troubleshooting...never went back to F8 as reccommended by Gigabyte becasue F9 is working fine for me.

So wait.. does F9 give false positives for every board, or just the DS4 or something?

Well being stupid and not thinking things through, I thought that the conductive pen wouldn't be just a dispenser of a very liquid kind of substance and as a result, I applied the pen without masking off the area or testing it on a cheap motherboard i've got here..

It made a small puddle of it and seems to have bridged like 5 pins on the chip near that resistor (d'oh..). Trying to clean it up now with a pin and some magnification glasses. My second proper voltage mod, so not surprising I stuffed it :P Hopefully can turn out ok though.

Edit: Just measured resistances on both the resistor in question and between each pin on that chip, and all seems to be ok. Gonna make extra sure before I boot it up though.

What is the 1TB fix mentioned with F9 BIOS?

I plan to rebuild system in signature with DS3P Revision 2.0 from Newegg next week.

I have Hitachi 1TB drive I plan to use. Don't want to use newer BIOS if memory errors and burnout occur because I use highly loved Micron D9GMH G.Skill "HZ" type DRAM

So does anyone know what 1TB issue exist and what issue contain?

I think also that you guys read into the BIOS's too much. Each one didnt provide any difference for me. F6 through to F9. I'm on F8 at the moment and its the same as every other one for me really.

The 1TB Hard drive issue is just that some hard disks would not be detected at the full 1TB with some BIOS's so they made a fix for it. Its all documented on the Asus site...briefly.

Someone above said that the stock ddr2 voltage was 1.38? I doubt that. Generally I thought it was decided that these boards mostly set the voltage at stock to 1.8.

Just letting you guys know that not only is my board not dead, but that the vDroop mod worked :) Don't even get vDrop anymore - so it's dead on what it's set to in BIOS and literally doesn't move a single mV when under load.

The only thing that I could find wrong with the board is gone on it :) It's a P35-DS3R board revision v2.1.

Can you link me to ASUS issue webpage mention 1TB hard drive error?

This is a Gigabyte board, is the 1TB issue P35 chipset wide? Erratum of some sort?

I really wish more people had DS3P Rev 2.0 to share experiences.

I don't own my Giga P35 board yet. Am ordering next week to replace motherboard (dead) in signature.

But yes, it should be in MIT, you may need to do a CTRL F1 to access it.

Look at your g0 q6600 box, you'll see a vid value (i.e. 1.300), slowly bump that up (i.e. 1.300 -> 1.31 -> 1.32, etcc)

You want to download Orthos and run that program to stress all cores to 100% for 8-24 hours (I do 24) to successfully test for stability


Now can someone give me info on P35 DS3P Revision 2.0 --- GOOD BOARD?

Yes, I've been running it since yesterday. It's fine so far, and it's not giving me the memory issues that F9 was.

I'm getting the 007feedf18 error in Memtest so i'll test how it is back in F8.

Yeah might just go back to F9 as I think it's been pretty honest when memtest throws an error with that BIOS. Haven't bothered flashing back yet as i'm still in the process of inulating the socket on the board :lol:

Well now my sound cards acting up and when you have a 180.00 motherboard you shouldn't have to keep adding PCI cards to fix faulty onboard components. Having said this apparently Gigabyte says my bios is flawed since my ethernet port is nolonger even listed in my bios an entire line is missing like my ethernet adapter was never there. I tried reflashing with no result and due to the 3 week RMA process I'm going to buy another motherboard and sell the new RMA P35 Ds4 revision 2.0 when it is returned to me good bye Gigabyte.

Yep, at least in CPU-Z that's what it's showing; I haven't checked with a DMM yet to confirm but i'm pretty confident this will be the case.

Not to sure about the vDroop mod on the rev 1.0 boards but you could give it a try. Can't recall anyone posting that it worked for the rev 1.0 boards but I'd give it a shot anyhow. Just do it with a conductive pen or something easily removable so if it does the opposite of what you want then you can remove it.

I plan to run the latest BIOS because I will use a major brand 1TB drive (1TB Seagate 32MB was DOA from Newegg! One layer of bubble wrap! :mad:)

Does latest BIOS enjoy killing RAM sticks? I heard something about this on past few pages of this thread.

I use highly loved D9GMH from G.Skill in 4x1GB quantity and they will be fresh from RMA from Newegg (had 2x1GB of old Green/6Layer and 2x1GB of new Black/8layer PCB) after they died in my ASUS board.

I do not wish to kill the RAM again. Confirmed memory was dead in ASUS M2A-VM micro AMD2 motherboard.

But I must use latest BIOS for 1TB fix. If I do not use latest BIOS does anyone know how much of 1TB do I lose? I figure after format process available I will have 930GB or so.

Did anybody try to overclock Q6600 (G0) on P35-S3 rev. 1? Or it's a waste of time?

Well i've read it not working when people use pencils to reduce the resistance, but it's worked fine for myself and a couple of others over the last couple of pages in this thread so it at least works in some instances, but not guaranteed to work.

It's worth a shot though - just mask off the area around the resistor with some sort of tape, grab a conductive pen or some conductive lacquer and then just spread it over it to reduce the resistance across it to 0. Check with a multimeter and hope that it works. ;)

Anyone else try this P35-DS3R Vdroop mod? I just gave it a whirl with a circuit pen and it's working. I applied the silver paint with the flat side of my smallest mini screwdriver. Stock voltage primeing went up to 1.23v from 1.18v. I'm trying for 400x8 stock volts so it idles with C1E 1.15v.

so which mod works the best, and which of them I should do?

I need that vdrop mod, this GA-P35-DS3R rev1 board has a huge vdrop in my opinion, even with this e2160, and in just a few days I get my Q6600 G0 :confused2 soon I have a lot of fun (and hopefully some certain games won´t drop in fps...)

I´m not afraid of those vmods introduced by sham but if there´s a easier mod available I think I should go with that.

Is anyone using a waterblock on the chipset for the DQ6? I need recommendations for a block please.

It's a circuit writer pen. I ordered mine online. They are not exactly rare. Kinda expensive but the easiest way to do this. You could probably use that rear window defroster repair paint too though (I got some at an autozone store once). Maybe pencil lead, but that stuff will vaporize over time with current going thru it so resistance will slowly rise.

LOL. Yeah you can't get any easier than just bypassing a single resistor with some conductive paint or whatever. It seems to be working fine. I am stable at 3.2 GHz with stock volts now. I also found a mod for my 965P-DS3 3.3 that covers the same resistor.

I have to say that I'm rather confused as to why Gigabyte lowered the voltage like that in the first place, if it can be fixed by just bypassing that single resistor.

I am coming from a P5B-Deluxe that I could control all 3 of my 3-pin fans using SpeedFan.

A little FYI here on my previously posted voltmod for the vdroop: I undid it. It seemed to have caused a very distinct buzz from the voltage regulator area of the board. Not all that nice to hear. I have no idea what it meant, but I decided to undo the mod because of it.

Perhaps it was overloading a part of the vreg circuitry? No idea honestly. The sound got louder with higher volts and load, and is completely nonexistent without the mod.

:confused: now that´s weird. By bypassing that resistor, it should just rise the voltage a bit, but I don´t think that it would cause the regulator(s) to "hum" or "buzz".
Maybe if the "undoing" the mod made the "humm/buzz" sound(s) go away, there must be somthing related in those sound(s) and bypassing that resistor....sound pretty odd to me. The sound(s) are now gone when you undid that mod, aren´t they?

That's kinda why i'm concerned about the exact reason as to what this mod does bypass.. Sure it fixes the issue, but it could be preventing an overload on the vRegs or something.. *shrug*

AS5 will be slightly capacitive but it's not conductive, if the arctic silver website is true (well, at least it said that a few years ago last time I checked).

That is a little concerning. I haven't heard anything on mine thus far. I'm not really fussed with my board to be honest. If it goes, no big deal as it was a cheapie.

Sorry guys, but to save me from reading 80 pages of posts..

Is this mod available (or any other worthwhile mods) for the GA-P35-S3 (Rev 2)? I get bad vdroop when overclocking too. Currently set at 1.5v in bios, real voltage is ~1.40-1.42v

Stable @ 3.3ghz though at this voltage (E4400 10 x 330)

Also, what's with the lack of bios updates on the GB site? There's only F5 & F6

Yeah I'm sure it was coming from an inductor. Hard to determine with this board's closed inductors because you can't stop their vibrations with your finger like with cheapie open inductors.

Ah well. It would be interesting to hear if anyone else gets that sound if they do the mod. It really did fix up the vdroop in a big way. 1.40v BIOS = 1.38v sensor. Without the mod I have to do like 1.50v BIOS to get 1.40v sensor, and at idle the volts are ~0.05v higher than load. Dumb stuff with these boards.

My 965P-DS3 rev 3.3 got a very similar mod. Hell, I think I covered the same resistor in the same spot lol. No bad sounds from it.

I use a fan controller on my DS3R so I can't really answer your question. However, I've worked on DS3L and speedfan can only control 2 of 4 fan connectors and those 2 are 4-pins connector type.

Do they fans need to be 4 pin fans to be controlled with SpeedFan? This was not a requirement on my P5B Deluxe

Or do you mean only the two 4 pin headers can be controlled with either a 4 or 3 pin fan?

Only 4-pin headers can be controlled by speedfan. I use 3-pin fan on both.

I didn't know how well 9500 would fit versus 9700 and all benchmarks I saw showed less than 3C difference in typical situations.

How do I set the memory ratio to 1:1, I believe in Giga boards it's "2.0" option under the memory divider in the overclocking menu (CTRL+F1 -- been using that since GA-7VAXP KT400 board!!)

Can you confirm 1:1 = 2.0?

I basically plan to set CPU ratio at 8x, memory at 1:1 (voltage at 2.1 obviously), FSB at 400 and voltage somewhere close to 1.375-1.40 and begin Orthosing all four cores. I know how to overclock, I've just used ASUS boards since my KT400 Giga board blew its caps.


Also, how is best method to flash BIOS from USB stick. I must apply latest BIOS flash due to 1TB hard drive (some issue??). I know how to use Q-Flash from reading manual I downloaded but do I just put the BIOS .bin file in root directory of USB drive or do I need to use HP formatting tool?

Yup just set it to 2.0 and it'll be 1:1.

I couldn't ever get the HP boot tool working for me - but you don't need it if you're flashing the BIOS :) Make sure USB Legacy mode is enabled, then enter Q-Flash once you're in the BIOS setup (F9 I think it was). Then your USB stick should show up as a HDD in there. All you need on the stick is the bin file you want to flash with.

Probably the most painless BIOS update process i've come across actually. Quite happy with it :)
