another way to check when you can look at the box would be the build date.
anything that starts with 0640 or 0641 or 42 and so on MIGHT BE a C2 but i truly dont know.
ask someone here what their C2 mobo starts with... that will tell you, anything after that will be a C2
Maybe they'll come out with a BIOS to fix my crap ass OCZ gold ram?
LOL! I should of bought new ram!!!!!
Gold... phew try Titanium Alpha VX2's thier even crappier ;)

and for the price,,, yeah.
especially now with IC prices its even less of a bargain.
I guess I'll just wait to see if they get the D9 ram issuse fixed before I try and get some more ram, maybe the prices will go back down!!!
It seems that F8a fixed my XFI problem , keeping my fingers crossed.
Now the D9 problem ;) ( then the 1.6v startup problem and better selectable , 1.625,1.650, enz.. )
Hehe, Ken I must apologize for looking like an ass.... as I'm about to do now because it turns out I can run rated speeds/timings :D
I had a spill from my wc loop on the ds3's ram voltage area and some corrosion formed on the legs off three ic's.... I didn't notice untill I switched sticks again, must have been a spill from a top up I did. Anyway I cleaned it up and I just booted 400fsb 2.5 multi 4-4-4-15 equaling the promised speeds/timings :)
I got a week 28 Conroe, E6600: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc?id=131615
I'm having issues with systems temps, look at this and tell me if this is normal?
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3...owervi6.th.gif
425x8=3400MHz with Vcore set in bios to 1.4000V, i had an issue with how i applied my AS5, had to do it over again and temps dropped alot.
But i'm wondering if my temps are rather high for this O/C?...had to that my case is open + thr Scythe fan is running at full speed.
I'm using F6 bios, any thoughts as to lower temps?

do it dude...
I don't think that's going to happen especially without vdroop mod, too much vdroop on this board.Quote:

Temps drop by 15-20C, it was a bad application first time round. I tried the old pea size blob in the middle...but it only covered half the IHS in a circle.
So i used the Arctic Clean system and cleaned everything, then applied a thin line down the center of the IHS, temps dropped alot after then.
It's possible my Scythe Ninja Plus wasn't attached properly also. Since it's a fresh application of AS5 it'll take 200 hours for the paste to settle in.
So temps might drop further over time.

wow richard where did you hear that malarky ?
i have found that once i apply the AS5,, i go into windows and tool around and then shut it off for the night.. get up the next day and temps the AS5 is set.
it doesnt take 200 hours for AS5 to setting. but usually heating it up and shutting it down 1 time say over night is all thats needed.
so richard what week cpu did you get ? and whats your overclock now ?

and he has a DQ6 there is almost no droop on those boards.
Yes does does take 200 hours, read what AS say:
Due to the unique shape and sizes of the particles in Arctic Silver 5's conductive matrix, it will take a up to 200 hours and several thermal cycles to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to CPU interface to reach maximum conductivity. (This period will be longer in a system without a fan on the heatsink or with a low speed fan on the heatsink.) On systems measuring actual internal core temperatures via the CPU's internal diode, the measured temperature will often drop 2C to 5C over this "break-in" period. This break-in will occur during the normal use of the computer as long as the computer is turned off from time to time and the interface is allowed to cool to room temperature. Once the break-in is complete, the computer can be left on if desired
http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm
3.4GHz the voltage set in bios to 1.38750V and memory at .0375V, no mods on the MCH or FSB.
425x8=3.4Ghz. I have to test stability at this level now, my target is 3.4 with the lowest possible Vcore.
My temps still seem a little high, but over time they should drop a little, and if i stay under 60C i'm safe.
I got an L628A, as you can see it's alot better then the old chip.

rich why you running a 9x multi ?
hit 9x and crank the fsb to 400.. set vdimm to 1.4v and see if she turns right on and is stable at 3.6ghz.
the difference in speed at 450x8 vs 400x9 is 1 second or less on 1M Pi and youwont see any real world difference.
see what she can do for 9x.
Any new bios for S3 beside F6?? *same as F7 for all other boards*
anyone get SataII to work on these boards??
Well, I've rebooted about 10 times and still have my X-Fi! But now I'm getting some crackling in BF2142 after a short time. Kinda freaks me out, cause it's the first I've heard this famed issue on my card in over a year of owning. I may revert back to F5 to check.
Bios F6 definetly oc's allot better for me atleast then F8a. 520x7 bootable again with the elpida's... With terrible timings... come on gigabyte fix this thing before I am forced to sell these sticks before I can really use em :stick:
Wait.. I could sell the board to, touch choiche :fact:
what ram u using Martian ?
It does take AS5 around 200 hours to take full effect. Im guessing you have A.D.D.
Read the instructions on the website if you don't beleive it.
I have the same chip (or at least CPUID shows same stepping and revision E6600) on my S3.Quote:

Shin's pliability and temperature range at which it becomes soft enough to saturate the pores is high,, and its just yucky
read the specs all you want, i been using AS5 since it was AS1 it aint gunna make any difference at 200 hours.
the setting is the mix of heat and cool and more so the constant heat applied to it from lets say a pc running for 200 hours at X temperature.
setup the pc,, run it for a while get it nice and warm... let the as5 work its way into the pores of the IHS and heatsink.. shut it down sit it overnight and thats all she wrote.
if you have larger gaps from a concave or convex IHS or if the heatsink is on crooked or with less than sufficient downward force then no amount of hours is gunna make any difference.
and if i had ADD which just so you fully understand means Attention Deficite Syndrome. would mean i cant stick around to let the AS5 setup... and i am constantly removing the heatsink and reapplying the AS5 in hopes it will get better.
before you think about insulting someone you might take a second and stfu and realise to whom your speaking.
now back on topic..

I think I'm going back to F4 until I get confirmation of better overclocks and better D9 compatibility. At least I have confidence we won't see the X-Fi issue again in the future.

wht bothers me the most is the fact that, you take the same D9 ram on lets say a P5B and you can hit 1000+ 4-4-4 but on this one you cant even do it with 5-5-5.
last time i came across this was ,, i dont recall what board i think it was when i switched from a NEO2 Plat to the Ultra-D. the Ultra-D had a better memory control and voltage system so it allowed it to take the ram tighter and higher.
i have assumed this was the case all the while with the DS3.
just a poor memory voltage and subsystem.
i also have had but can not even come close to confirming that boards such as the DS3 and Biostar 965PT are simply using failed 965 chipset. chipsets that would normally go into the Deluxe version or in this case the 965 DQ6 but have failed testing high extreme clocks so they simply put them in the low end budget boards.
this is a very possible situation in which case there wont ever be a fix.
but who knows.
Don't think they speedbin chipsets... do they :confused:Quote:

Lestat (and others)...need your opinion on this. In regards temps and performance, which settings are better?
425x8=3400
378x9=3400
Consider the RAM is 756 vs. 850...pure performance which would be better.
Now also factor in temps and how hard the mobo/CPU has to work, is it true the NB runs hotter due to the 8x multi, or is it the higher FSB?
I did my third application of AS5, the second application was actually pretty good on examination, and my IHS and Ninja appear to be flat, using the razor blade test.
Temps are roughly the same, Orthos testing varies from 55-62C depending on the test pattern being completed.
Naturally if i got uber high speed fans things would change, but i really like these 1200 RPM Scythe fans...very very quiet. My Vcore is set in bios to 1.4000V, around 1.3600V actual. MCH and FSB set to normal, DIMM set to +0.375V.
A. High fsb helps performanceQuote:

i tested temps with my XP-120 yesterday on the biostar board and wow hot running chips even at 1.4v still way too hot for me. so went back to water.
rich.. same cpu clocks but higher ram is best.
martian, i am not aware that cpu multi's change NB clocks,, but it is a fact that higher FSB will change the NB latency. thats why on the 975x boards it will auto switch to the 1333 strap. higher ram = looser NB timings.
thats why when using the 1333 strap.. they clock higher but performance suffers.
lower cpu multi doesnt change it. although it is highly possible. yup very possible but i havent seen any of the more knowledgeable big boys say that.
richard is that the limit of the board at 9x ? or you just dont want to increase the vcore ?
the difference in those two clocks is only going to be about 1 second or less in 1mPi so the choice is yours.
as long as everything can handle it fine then no need to really worry just run the 8x multi.
also on the thought of nb latencies and the strap its using.
it is possible altough i dont know how to check this, that the DS3 may be stuck on the 1066 strap so it cant go any higher on the ram as the latencies on the chipset are too tight and since it can not switch to the 1333,, then the ram cant go higher.
heck it might be stuck on the 1333 strap i dont know. i havent heard amny people talk about what strap the 965 chipset uses. only the 975 chipset.
total guess work on my part though.
afaik 965 usses only 1066.
I seen all this explained by Tony, I think it was on be I have to look it up to be sure.
hey did anyone else notice that they changed the defualt vcore back to 1.23v ?
i just noticed that.
hey Rich,, talking about good AS5 application..
im sitting at 23c right now.. thats a good application lol
this is the same results as my Biostar board
this is ONLY possible when using the 5:4 memory divider.
this is also 2.0v so not too shaby but its as loose as a hooker saturday morning.
but thats it,, any attempt to go higher it fails. voltage increase doesnt help either.
Okay .. new problem ... how the hell do I fix my PCI-Express running at x1 problem?
I'm not sure if this helps with the new F8a bios for the D9 issues??
1) Load Performance Defaults instead of Load Fail Defaults
2) Press "Ctrl+F1" to enable the hidden BIOS features
3) Disable all unnecessary features in the Advanced BIOS Settings -- eg: Virtualization Tech, and other Intel so called smart technologies..
4) Turn off Smart Fan control in PC Health Status and let the fan spins at full speed, though it might be alot noisier
5) Set "System Voltage Control" to "Auto" ~~ Don't mess with the voltages first to verify my assumption..
As for me.. I'm able to get FSB 480 with RAM runs in 960MHz at 1:1 ~~ however, when I'm trying to check what chip was used in my Corsair CM2X1024-8500C5 1GB module, I accidentally ripped 1 memory chip off the stick when I'm removing the heat-spreader.. (Crying ~~~) The Chip used in my RAM is D9GMH ...
So.. I'm not sure if it's the chip difference or it's the method I used.. Cos I'm only able to run at single channel DDR now... Sigh.. I'm going to get broke again inorder to get a new memory module
omg!!! you ripped off one of the chips ? !!!
wow thats some very expensive ram and now its ruined... wow
yeah the D9GMH and D9GKX are the two that have issues.
950-960 is usually around the area where it stops working. @ 4-4-4 5-5-5 sometimes get a little more,, and as i just showed using Auto SPD lets you get higher. higher but VERY loose. loose enough thats its not worth it.
but i have seen system voltage = auto have slightly better results.
so the "Auto" setting is doing something else with the mobo too.
what did you have your SPD timings set to ? 4-4-4 ? 5-5-5 ?
GMH is my ballistix and it does with 2.15V 1000 @ 4-4-4-8. Funny is if i set CL=5 it doesnt boot.
ea6 is yours the DQ6 DS4 or DS3 ?
the DQ and the DS4 run the D9 ram fine from everything that i have seen.
Hi. I'm using DS4 and F7b bios. When i set (G)MCH over +0.25 my PCI-Express run as X1. Can i fix this? How?
Thanks very much.
Masse...email GB tech support about the issue.
In regards my own setup, when i left my PC this morning i was 18 hours Orthos stable at 3.4Ghz.
I am going to leave it run a minimum of 24 hours and likely 30 hours, thus i can assume it's 100% stable then?

I've ordered a second Scythe 120mm fan, i'll run two in push/pull at full speed...the fans are pretty quiet at 1200 RPM.
Thus i may get another 1-2C drop abd when the AS5 settles in it may drop another 2C, so i'll be within my 60C range.
Running Intel TAT and creating a lof file the temps never went above 64C and the majority of Orthos test patterns it was between 55-60C, some tests went to 62-64C.
It's looking good all round, hopefully a new bios update will allow me to drop the voltage further.
your temps from what i am testing on my water(i have a really crappy pump so water flow is very low, temps would be better if i would get off my arse and install my good pump and 1/2" ID tubing) are pretty good actually not bad at all for air.
here is a shot of what i do.
notice the voltages (as i have a sh|t eating grin on my face) and yes the DS3 boots at 422x9 :) thatss why when people say buy the abit or the bad axe or some other baord thats 100-150 more,, i say why,, those baords are not any better at 9x.
28 more posts and we hit 2,000!

WOOT!
sad thing is this has become less and less about bios's and more about issues.
but its nice to see it all in one thread.
now if we can only get people to use the "search thread" function.
I got another tech support email from GB about the SYS_FAN issue, they say they are going to test again, with my suggestions, and get back to me with the results.
My guess is they'll spout some crap that SYS_FAN being controlled by bios was removed as a feature and will no longer be available...wait and see!
hahahahaha
nah they will keep it there, they cant remove it.
but they will make excuses and i can guarentee you that they will say they dont have the same issues.
need a new bios so badly, this 8a for my DS3 sux so bad, i mean sometimes i cant even cold boot and i have to turn it off then on again for it to boot, and i got this also with the f7 bios, and then i get some random times when i boot up that i get a screen that pops up rather than windows with colors that are green blue and red and i have to restart and then it works, i have had that graphical issue 2 times. anyone else with that issue. i have a 7950gx2, and the e6400 with ballistix ram.
I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUES!!!! I have everything at stock settings now with the F6 bios and I cannot even cold boot half the time. It just freezes on the windows logo boot screen or it has weird coloring on the bios boot screen or does strange things during bios bootup. I also have a 7950gx2 and D9 gskill memory. I am not sure if its my 7950gx2 or the ds3 although I would guess its the ds3 since when I get in to windows things runn pretty good. Keep in mind this is all stock settings now. I can't for the life of me even get a stable oc anymore. Not sure if its becuase I updated to F6 or if my ds3 is just crapping out.Quote:

wierd colors are usually caused by faulty video cards, possibly the ram or the gpu.
could even be just the output of the video card.
just keep an eye on it and see if you can narrow down any setting that your using or changing or something.
Lestat the strange rainbow and scrambled characters occur DURING bios boot screen. Never while running windows. I can even OC my 7950gx2 to 700/550 from 500/600 and it runs perfect if I can actually get in windows. I can game playing BF2142 and Gothic 3 at highest settings for hours once I actually get my system to boot up properly in to windows. Its the weird bios boot problems and the system freezes during the windows boot screen that are causing the issues. This is with automatic voltage control and stock FSB and voltages. I don't even bother to OC anymore since I upgraded to F6 I cannot get any kind of stable OC.Quote:

I have also tried reinstalling the OS and not even attempting to OC and leaving everythign at stock and boot problems still occur.
hhmm almost sounds like the way the POST process is handling the dual cards.
maybe its confused and thinks it should be sli and its not. ???
i couldnt get so lucky as to get one of those card lol. lucky you guys.
btw which NB cooler is that your using headshot ?
my little TwinkleStar works great.
Yeah I am not sure what is causing the problem. I am just guessing that its the motherboard since the only times I have problems is during bios boot and also hard freezing during the windows xp splash screen. I get bout 1 out of 4 perfectly successful boots at stock settings witht this bios. Im thinking about switching back to F4 and seeing if that helps things.Quote:

I had to glue the mounting bracket to the back of the motherboard becuase the mounting bracket had a tendency to snap off the motherboard releasing the HS which of course is NOT GOOD. Just a tiny tiny dab of superglue to the mounting punches did the job.

I have a DS3 (F7 bios) and an E6300 week 27 that is currently running at 3150GHz (450 x 7) with OCZ Platinum (Revision 1) 2 x 1GB sticks. Paid $189 for the OCZ
I am wondering if it is worth it for me to buy the Crucial Anniversary sticks (D9GMH) for $50 more than I paid for my OCZs to try to get more MHz...
Knowing that my current memory is the bottleneck is kind of knawing away at me - even though getting 2-300 more MHz from 3150 is not going to do much if anything for games or applications...
Gary Key over at Anandtech told me that Gigabyte will release a new bios this week to fix the D9 issues... :toast:
I have D9 G.SKILL, i can go 1000MHz with 2.3V, HZ are well regarded.
Yup, yup. I was in same boat, but decided to return the chip for an E6400 and get the 8x multi. I run @ 3300 w/ default vcore now. It's only a touch more, but at least I know the potential for 3600's there when I improve my cooling.Quote:

conroelover, I think that is good memory you have, from what i researched in my new system.
Excellent ram. Booted fine on DS3. Took it to 900Mhz 4.4.4.12 @ 2.1V. Probably had more, but I went for the $160 Patriot in the end. Only does 900Mhz 5.5.5.15 @ 2.1V, but hella cheap.

Your Patriot 667 is auto 5-5-5-15 (signature series) or 4-4-4-12 (performance series)Quote:

Excellent ram. Booted fine on DS3. Took it to 900Mhz 4.4.4.12 @ 2.1V. Probably had more, but I went for the $160 Patriot in the end. Only does 900Mhz 5.5.5.15 @ 2.1V, but hella cheap.
It's the good stuff. Black heatspreader from the egg a month or two ago. I haven't pushed it past 900 as that's all I need for now. It wouldn't do the 4.4.4.12@900 like the Corsair tho.
Is there any different between the BIOS on gigabyte site and the URLs that you posted ?
ofcourse its a Gigabyte , DS4 C1 rev. Strangely the DQ6 runs the ballistix fine too. Havent tested it with a DS3 :(Quote:

I have tried F5,F6,F7 bios and I am using the most recent 91.47 nvidia drivers.
I am having the following issues:
1) During a cold boot up the system will hard freeze during the windows xp splash screen with the progress bar. I am only able to boot up from a cold start successfully about 1:3 or 1:2 times.
2) Immediately after the windows xp splash screen with the progress bar dissappears the monintor always goes in to sleep mode for about 5-10 seconds before loading windows graphics. From my understanding this is normal with the 7950gx2. HOWEVER, sometimes it will never wake up from sleep mode or it will wake up and just display a black screen causing me to have to hard reset the system.
3)Very seldomly but sometimes I get graphical color scrambles on the BIOS boot screen. If I quick hit control alt delete to do a reset it cleans up immediately.
These issues are driving me nuts and I am not able to overclock or this all gets much worse. I have these issues at stock speeds and automatic voltage as well as normal voltage.
I have done fresh xp installations, upgraded all drivers, changed bioses. Anyone having these issues or know how to resolve?
its the way the DS3 is handling the 7950 have to wait for gigabyte to POSSIBLY fix it although i am quite positive they will deny it exsists and ask you all sorts of questions that have nothing to do with the issue.
ie; you tell them you did a fresh install and 4 days later when they reply they will ask if you did a fresh install of windows. and thats all nothing else. then you have to reply back and 3-4 days later they will reply back with another b.s. email.
i swear they dont even read the little questionaire you fill out when you submit the troubleshooting email.
are you using S1 or S3 in the bios ? S3 is worthless cuz how many of us actually use sleep mode on their PC ?

Not sure which sleep mode I am using. Whatever the default is under optimized defaults since I never change anything there.
I am about a week away from selling this damn thing and getting an asus p5b delux. Piss me off to spend over 3g's to have a non functioning PC.
