Never once had a problem with ATI drivers in the past 10 or so years. Running 10.7 with crossfire 4890's and no issues. I also can play any games mentioned in this thread without issue.

Well, in my opinion its my duty to report that I have no issues with ATI's products or drivers as mine are serving me well. The reason why threads like this one fill up with people defending ATI is simply because if no one did, anyone that visited this site and run across this thread would be under the impression that ATI is garbage based on a bunch of negative posts with no positive posts to counter them.
If I was looking to buy an ATI product and started doing my research and found threads full of negative posts with no positive posts, I would assume ATI was garbage so I believe people post positively to counter such negativity. I appreciate that because I often do research products before I buy them and I would want to hear both sides of an argument before forming my own opinion.

Each side has its flaws, but certainly right now ATi are a lot worse. I use a very 1-2-3 configuration to avoid problems with drivers in my systems and ATi are even failing on this level now, its why I switched to nVidia.
I'd been having those since 2006 when 8800 G80's came out...up till Jan 2009 when I bought a 4850 to replace my dying 8800GTS. Since then, with ATI not really many problems (driver crashes get annoying) but one particular one that I hate:Quote:

Artifacts, driver wide, in anything GPU accelerated for my 4870X2. Works fine if you reinstall again.
If you stand back and think about it, isnt it amazing how lets say I have had ati cards my entire computer life and never any issues. I run dual moniters (hdmi to tv) for when I play single player games so my nephews can watch. Crossfire, overclocked, ect. I update my drivers every 2 months or so. Never have a bsod, crashes, errors, lag, studder, artifacts. Nvidia cards ive bought before just werent up to par with there ati equal at the times. On the same note, somebody who is nvidia biased has probly had the exact same luck with there brand that I had with mine and wouldnt run the others card if they gave it to us. Ive also helped fellow clan members and friends online that have near identical setups as me have nothing but problems with ati drivers, or setup issues. For whatever reason, even with rma'd card, latest drivers, pretty much copy my perfectly running system to a T still cant get there card to work like mine, and nobody knows why. How is it that it can work just fine for one person, but the other person have nothing but issues? Why is it that some brands just dont agree with you and make somebody else the happiest person ever?

I love ATI I really do, I loved the 5850's and 5870's I had a couple of each. I probably have some of the most minimalistic computer usage and habits of everyone here.
I GAME, mostly BC2 and L4D, some bioshock 2 and dirt2 and maybe some mw2 thrown in. I watch movies sometimes and listen to alot of music. I still have :banana::banana::banana::banana:loads of issues.
All I am gonna say is look at my sig... ATI DRIVERS SUCK COMPLETELY SUCK, the issues DECREASE with one card but once you go crossfire, F-IT nothing but HEADACHES, SAD TO SAY.
I went 470 SLI and never looked back and never had an issue. Now that i am back on one card I would use a single 5870 again possibly, I am very happy with a single 470 however.
Still incredibly turned off ATI with recent drivers.
I didnt have any major video problems with my 5770s and 10.6 drivers, however my mouse cursor kept on getting corrupted. I hope that doesnt happen anymore now that I've joined the dark side :)
This is because ATI only have one tessellation unit per GPU, whereas Nvidia have one per shader cluster. ATIs single unit is more powerful than the Nvidia ones, however Nvidia have more per card, and the better the Nvidia card you get, the more tessellation performance you get, whereas with ATI, every HD 5000 card has the same tessellation performance, and the only way to increase it is with multiple GPUs.Quote:

When installing ATI drivers just make sure you do this:
- Uninstall previous drivers.
- Reboot in safe mode.
- Run Driver Sweeper (http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/) and clean "Ati - Display".
- Reboot in normal mode, and install the newest drivers.

Jesus, I've run through a myriad of PC configs between my first 4870 system and my current 5870 problem. Never had many problems other than the occassional glitch in games. Same goes for my friends who use ATI.
I'm guessing most of the issue stems with ATi's commitment to release one driver per month, which really doesn't leave a lot of time to thoroughly compatability test their drivers. Also it means there are a lot more driver versions out there and more people will naturally be reporting issues.
Coming from some one with a similar background of purchases I would say this is a completely fair assessment. nVidia is certianly more prone to outright crashes, especially if it gets confused on what card is set for physx and what card is for SLI, that said running an ATi setup is like swatting away a horde of mosquitos with the constant never ending onslaught of bugs.Quote:

Sometimes I think driver issues stem from updating every single freakin' month. All it takes is one to not quite uninstall right and you start down the path of screwed up installs. I update mine once every several months. I live by the motto "if it ain't broke, dont' fix it." I'm still running 9.12 drivers, they work fine so why screw around with them? :D
Oh, and multi-card setups I won't touch with a 10 foot pole. Neither ATI nor nvidia seem to be able to get that working fully 100% so I just stick with the tried and proven powerful single card.
TessMark works fine here with the 10.8 beta drivers.
