- Phenom II 940 BE: Approx. U$340
- Phenom II 920: Approx. U$300
well for me its just a cpu upgrade for now, Will an AM2+ cpu run in a AM3 mobo with DDR3? if so that would be my upgrade path.......If not then Ill have to see what improvements there are moving onward from where I am.
^^^ mngdew:
The inital "pre-sale" prices may be that high, but I seriously doubt that the MSRP will end up in that range... I get the feeling AMD will do the same thing they did with the 48xx series of videocards and undercut the competion on price knowing that they will need to compete in the price/performance catagory.
FWIW, Fudzilla (I know, iffy source to say the least!), suggests the MSRP will be as follows:
- Phenom II 940 BE: Approx. U$265
- Phenom II 920: Approx. U$225
Source: http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...0665&Itemid=35Quote:
After posting the story, we came across some additional information from several sources. It seems the site has jacked up the prices by about 10 percent over the MSRP. Coupled with traditionally high prices in Australia, it is likely the retail price in the US will end up about 25 percent lower than the $350/300 list price we reported. We don't have any exact numbers, and as we already said, it's a bit too early to have any at the moment. However, if the new Phenoms really do end up priced at $265 for the 940 model and $225 for the 920, they could become a tempting alternative to Intel's quad-core offer.
If the MSRP prices turn out to be in this range, which I believe they will, I'll definetly be getting one when they're released...
I'm buying a PII 940 as soon as it's available in Aus
I've got a descent watercooling system. I just hope the lack of ACC with my K9A2 Platinum will not prevent me from getting >4GHZ.
i have a feeling i will be getting one as soon as newegg gets them
Ive it on pre-order the day I could at 266 Euro, prolly overpriced ~10 Euro (or more), but at least I did everything possible to get one ASAP:p:
As soon as it's available I'm going to get one. Which depends on the price.
I will wait for the Am3 parts.. Eager to see how they perform with DDR3
Also I want to see how the triplecores will OC
just to make you all envy :p

if I told you that Foxconn's 790GX mobo don't even recognize CPU properly with latest BIOS but overclock it like crazy, I think you would want to go for this awesome blacky ;)
Unless you're willing to wait for it and remain bored:p: I'd suggest not to put all your money on RD890 though. If I remember my time waiting on SB750 boards... It took ages after I set my pre-order:(
In that case you'd better get an AM3 chip and set it on a cheap AM2+ board, there's quite a few cheap but quite decent options out there. In that time you can learn the Phenom a bit as well;)
Also when AM3 is out for a while you might see some better motherboards coming out, and if you wait for RD890 to be released also even more chance there's some good quality boards out like Asus ROG and DFI UT boards.
Some cheap options might be ECS's 790GX/SB750 board or their new 780G/SB750 board (I know it's 780G, but it has support upto 160W TDP, so quite good PWM load out there).
Or, like I do, get a Phenom AM2+ and get an AM2+ board, have loads of fun and just sit back slowly and upgrade when AM3 and RD890 are available. More expensive in the end I guess, but well, being impatient for the win/lose (depends how you look at it:p:)
Is that your CPU or what:shocked:
Didn't the Aussie place that had them listed briefly say the 16th December? Theres a uk place that has them listed now, £231 for the 940, £190 or so for the 920, and say the 15th December also, so maybe its out earlier than expected? It does make sense its "that" soon as the latest price drop was very very soon after the last price drop and looks to be clearing out the 9950's(which dropped to £130 in the uk yesterday from £150ish) leaving the field clear for a couple new phenom's to enter the market.
Almost certainly going to get one on release as long as prices aren't utterly ridiculous in the UK, which at £231 isn't exactly cheap compared to $300.
How are phenom's doing with fsb overclocking, I had a 9600BE ages ago and other than the board being a pain fsb overclocking was limited to say the list, are you screwing yourself by buying a non unlocked multi chip? I think what AMD really needs and can increase enthusiast sales a lot(if fsb clocking is an issue) is a lower end multi unlocked chip, or hell, make the whole range unlocked and maybe just make the black edition ultra binned chips or something if they must. Having to pay £230 to get a great clock with unlocked multi doesn't sound half as nice as paying £100 for a lower quad and overclocking the bejesus out of it.
As I posted yesterday in the Folding Team thread - I am also waiting to place my order for a 940 to replace my cr*ppy 9600 B2 which is a dog with the TLB patch. I also made the mistake of buying the MSI K9A2 CF-F v1 MB with voltage regulators which cannot handle 125w CPUs, so it will have to go and so far there is no MSI MB with 790FX+SB750.
Given the only UK prices listed so far (940 BE is approx 231GBP) I think it's a bargain compared to going over to Core i7 :)
Will buy pretty much an entire new rig (just keeping the 4870). Only thing I don't know is will it be a good overclocker. If not, Intel for me.
I passed over the 65nm release for the 45nm one so I'll be getting one as soon as overclockers has them in stock...
Yeah I've seen those reports. I'll beleive it once a few people on here show their results prior to Jan 6th. I'm sure you'll agree a couple of AMD sponsored events and some less than reliable sites are not a good indication of how well it will overclock.
Saying that, even the more reliable sources have been stating the thing overclocks well. So perhaps we'll have a decent product on our hand.
I'm still unsure what to pair the CPU to. So far I'm looking at the Foxconn A79A-s but it's a tad expensive for my liking.
sweet niblets!:D thats some good hinting right there:up:.......on a side note that heatspreader sure does have some weird high edges for the heatsink to deal with......looks like it needs to be lapped:shakes:
which cheeks?:D
fsb wise I got mine to about 275-280mhz on my MSI DKA790GX but it hardly made a difference and Im talking going from 200mhz to 280mhz
made a difference of a few milliseconds less in spi 1M where as moving the nb frequency and the HT link speed from 2000mhz to 2400mhz gave a difference of 1-2 seconds less in spi 1M.
I just wanted to make a correction in my above post about fsb. After going through my notes my increase in performance in spi 1m going from 2000mhz to 2400mhz was actually .300 less not 1-2 seconds. I got a decrease of 1-2 seconds from a combination of fsb/nb frequency/ht link/timings and AOD green button. These all contributed to a 1-2 second decrese in spi 1M.....biggest factor in it though was the actual cpu speed. but thats for spi 1M now in Sandra memory Bandwidth going from 2000mhz to 2400mhz my score went from
INT 11,796 to 12,981
Float 11,809 to 13,014
about 1,200mb increase from a 400mhz increase in HT and NB.
i will buy the 940 as quickly as possible and put it in my dq6 + watercooling.
if the dq6 fails to oc, i will buy a 750sb board.
im not gonna wait for a little bit more bandwidth and 5% more fps on am3 boards.
