damn again money to spend... this year will be expensive. :D
500€ phone (already done), 800€ nehalem, 250€-300€ board, 450€ for 6gb ddr3, 300€-400€ for new gfx card and least but not last 400€ for a new monitor....
crap 2900€ gone and it not even christmas. :ROTF:
to be honest i dont see a soild reason to change from a Q6600 witch is strong enough for
everything today.
i think i will stay with Q6600 untill it will be weak in the games/softwares or at least a 50% improvment new Cpu..

Well that looks interesting. I'll hold off until they have the DP Octacore parts. I want 32 logical cores... for World Community Grid and then a graphics card or two or three for GPU folding.
Shopping list for the next year...
Initial DP Octacore Nehalem and platform and RAM... $2500
New graphics cards... $400
Samsung Instinct... $200 and then $100/month after
New monitor... $250
New keyboard & mouse... $150
New speaker system... $150
Yeah--lots of money going down the drain in the next 12 months.
If your thinking DP with each socket having 8 cores, don't expect that until Sandy Bridge, the new architecture on 32nm. Probably some time in 2010Quote:

You sure about that? I was expecting it at latest with the 32nm shrink. Realistically, it seems that Intel's DP package will be designed so you can slap two or more processors. I don't particularly care about "native" v. "glued", so long as I can have 8 cores per processor. I'd think it stupid of Intel if they stuck to duals and quads for another generation. If Nehalem is a native quad, why not glue two together and charge 125% the price of a normal quad? If the Conroe --> Kentsfield is any sign of what's to come, I'd assume that the initial quads will be tweaked and finally glued together for some octas.Quote:

I just want 8 Nehalem cores per processor... :p: And why 6? It's a funny number if you ask me, for processing cores.
Oh and for MP parts--I would never spend $1000 on a single processor.
If all else fails, I could just go with 6 or so 1U systems... take up a little bit more space than a tower on its side, but with plenty more processing power.

well with the current amount of space 8 nehalem cores take up, you need a physically larger package. Second, the production costs are through the roof and you would be paying much more then $1k on a single socket. Even on 32nm. sticking 8 cores is cost prohibitive for this market.Quote:

Yep, a lot earlier than I expected. From early ES samples, the improvement is significant. While it will not be as great as Netburst -> Core arch, it is still good enough.
I will first grab the cheapest one available and replace a DP L5310 WCG rig and then wait for few stepping advancements before going DP.
Who's everyone? I'm waiting till Q4 next year to step up to Nehalem, as people have said for a mainstream user there's nothing that won't run on an OCed q6600 + 280GTX/4870. Even that is overkill for most people. Sure there are those that might need that kind of processing power for their everyday lives, but it's definitely a minority. Hopefully by then (Q4-09) ddr3 prices will be around ddr2 now and there will be some tried and true budget OC motherboards which will make the system upgrade easier. Good to see that they are bringing forward the launch, but doesn't this mean it will be a paper launch because the parts won't be arriving?Quote:
