4MB?
2x512 kB L2
2048 kB L3
yeah, so 4*512kb=2mb
2mb+2mb=4mb;)
ehh, I don't know about that. Each die has it's own l2 for intel's quads.
But that's not a major issue. What is a major issue is that amd positioned the l2 cache in the center of the die so it has a short pipeline and thus has uber low latency. Problem is, the l3 is positioned between 11 friggin layers of metal, so it takes the signal more time to get there, thus the higher latency
if i'm not mistaken a Q6600 is actually two E6600's joined together, while the Phenom has actual four cores, everyone single and apart..that means each core has it's own L2 while @intel the communication between the L2's in a dual core has to process and then to process with the L2's from the other two cores..
L3 latency "problem" will be remedied by OCing(since we are at XS :) ).The problem "goes away" at ~2.4Ghz core speed and has even greater impact at higher OC speeds(past 2.6Ghz).Also independent IMC voltages and clocking will bring some more potential, since it was a major pita in K8/9 OCing endavours.
Two Meroms in Q6600 has to go over FSB in order to snoop each other's L2s.In K10's case,it's all done by L3.L2's are separated and they push down the data to L3 level.
AMD's approach is better in multithreaded cases(which is an overall trend in programing today, especially games which can use more than one cores being available even today in some non trivial numbers)
You are correct about the e6600s being joined together, but I don't think you're correct about the l2 part. As far as I know, the cores are allowed to use only their own die's l2 cache, intel is very misleading when they say 8mb l2 cache for kentsfield or 12mb for yorkfield
So what? ;] It will eventually get ALOT faster. Just like K8 did.
Let's bench some old A64 S754 against some AM2 A64. ALOT of improvement when it comes to clock-to-clock speed, and clock frequenzies aswell.
the L3 does the work of communicating like Informal mentioned it..
i just couldn't remember the exact thing or express normally..:D
it's physical 8Mb L2 on Kentsfield but not a true 8Mb due to it's communication
No link/source from the OP ? Not saying it's an unlikely price, but what reason do we have to believe this is genuine?
You have to know the web sites of the main strategic distributors of AMD. That’s the price list of ISA Hardware.
So if the distributer is charging $247 for the chip, then it will retail for... $300?
hmm, almost all the available processors on that list match exactly the same price (give or take $2-5) before GST (Tax) from my wholesaler, so if that trend catches on with the phenom it means from a wholesale point of view the 9700 would be $30 (AUD) cheaper than the Q6600 o_O
Minor nitpics....
IIRC the L2 cache has similar latency to K8 L2, which isn't bad but its hardly "uber low latency". Also the high L3 latency has more to do with the SRAM cell they're using vs. what metal layers its buried in, very hard to get good yields on a SRAM that large+4 cores on a single die, something had to give so they increased their latency requirements.
i don't think it's wrong, i've received an e-mail from the store itself and they confirmed that they are receiving pre-orders due to 19th of November, when is the date the Phenom will be available for purchasing
and yes, the amount is limited..bugger, i'm short on cash atm..:(
It's showing up on Google Product Search also.

2.2-9500,2.3-9600,2.4-9700 seems right.
ISORM.com has ETA: Friday December 14, 2007.
BLT has prices of $260.94, $291.50, $302.34.
that's the price, 300% or about 220 euros..less then the Q6600 yet similar price in most markets..
My DFI 590 SLI is saying gimme!
