It's probably nothing... Other people much more knowledgeable than myself on this thread have noted that the TDP of this card is close to some limit of some description, is probably AMD worried that if they take the HS apart and in the process of putting it back together something goes wrong the card is going to overheat, throttle and perform poorly on benchmarks.

Speaking about this, i ask me if EK have allready designed a waterblock for thoses monsters.. i will wait the 590, but as buying 2x 6970 or 580 is a bit of a cost for replace my 2x good old 5870. taking a dual gpu and watercool the card will be cheaper and cost/performance gain wise, a little bit more acceptable. if i don't decide to wait the next series from both Nvidia or AMD ( a shop here still get some MSI Hawk, so maybe just tri cfx will be the choice ).

Hope those "reasons" don't interfere with fitting a waterblock on this card... Excited as I am to get one of these to substitute my 2 x 5970s, if it can't go "under water" is not going in my rig ;)

Taking the cooler off would mean you'd have to replace the TIM since the phase change TIM won't work as well reattached. But this is a standard procedure anyways, benchmark first, then check the insides.

That sounds reasonable and plausible, that's why it wouldn't satisfy my mind. It has an uncanny ability to disregard what's simple and logical and come up with preposterous (yet very satisfying) omens of doom and damnation...

Seems to be wired to do an inverse Occam's razor in any given situation...

and 63C inside case - fan at 29%. So its pretty much the same as HD 5970 @ idle.

My 5970 is idling 46C with fan at 25%. Probably the CosmosS 200x230x30mm 900 rpm side panel intake fan makes the difference, I also have 3 more 120x120x25mm 1200 rpm intake fan instaled.

I don't think the HD 6990 even with improved reference cooler is going to run as cool.

cpu load says 0%, thus idling, sure it might have bumped up the clocks due to multi monitor output, but i still think 62 is excessively warm. maybe they just finished a benchmark and it cooling down though.

well no sh it at 50mhz less..but the 6990 is 880 as well and its right on par with a 6970xfire using 880mhz.
for easy viewing.
also price is 5000 yuan which is ~$760 usd..probably list for $699 here i'd guess though?

Nice performance, about 8-10% slower on default clocks and virtually identical at same clocks to 6970 Crossfire, and best of all, cheaper!

Disappointing massive power draw but I think some people would agree that this doesn't matter for extreme gamers (at least that's what they constantly say about Nvidia's power draw)

they dont say on that page..they just show that they "easily" clocked it to 930mhz core.
actually looking at it again...they tested at 880/5000 and pulled 569watts on a 600watt psu..id assume that they didnt have enough psu to overclock this to the limits and is the reason they only clocked the core a little more.

On paper doesn't look amazingly better than my current 5970 CF setup (I only play @1920x1080).

Am I missing something here?

unless your chart reading isn't very good? cause it easily bests the 5970 up to 60% in some cases. pretty substantial

If the 6990 is more or less equal than 2 x 6970s and a single 6970 is slower than a single 5970 then... ???

That's how I read the chart anyway... And that's why I asked, with no sarcasm or dig intended, if I was reading the chart wrong... or perhaps if the 5970 scales poorly on CF and you can't compare the results of 2 x 6970 with 2 x 5970.

EDIT: As I wrote on my original post I'm just focusing on the 1920x1080 resolution. Can't play at a higher resolution because that's as high as my 37" TV goes...

well obviously 2 5970s are still going to perform very well..they aren't that old.
you cant honestly think one 6990 is going to beat 2 5970s right? ..that is like 4 5870s vs 2 6970s....only in games where xfire doesnt scale will the latter be more powerful realistically.

I honestly did think that a single 6990 was going to beat 2 x 5970s. After all the 6990 is a dual-GPU card, and of a newer generation.

In fact I was already wondering if someone was going to make a waterblock for it and I had set money aside to buy both.

Which is why I'm so perplexed.

Well if it is truly $700 then I guess I will pass. Dual GPU's had historically been less than two separate equal GPU's unless they were a special card like Asus' Ares card. I will also wait for some more reviews since I am surprised it would beat two HD6970's in CF when clocked the same since they are supposed to be sharing the same GPU.

Sadly " this generation " is not what we was waiting... it's not like pass from a 4870 to 5970 or even to a 5870 ... AMD have need redesign is 32nm new architecutre in 40nm and so " perf / specs etc " was way less .. it's just 2x 6970 packed .. only and just that. it will not change the spec and perf of the 6970's

It was allready happend in some really rare case with 5970 vs 5870 ( rare, i remember 1-2games )... even if i have allways ask me if it was not the reviewers who have mess something doing the bench.

but like said you have a total of 4 gpus with 3200sp..so 6400sp vs 30xxsp
even if its a newer tweaked version its not that great..that would have to make the 6970 2x a 5870 ...which isn't what it is..

Yeah, I see what you mean now... I got confused with the product code :am:

5970 = 2 cores, 6970 = 1 core.

Compare 5870 to 6970 = good.

Compare 5970 to 6970 = no good.

Compare 5970 to 6990 = good.

@ manicdan. not really..Metro at 1920x1200 averages 60fps..its just you might hit some lag here n there..since of course thats average fps and not min. which is where you'll see the lag..but all games should run flawlessly on this single card at the res and max settings.

In my case, no. The only reason why I have two 5970s is because I only paid for the waterblocks, the cards were free :)

When it comes to the 6990 one does me fine. If I can flog the 2 x 5970s for a good price I might get one, now that InCredible has patiently dissipated the fog that was clogging my mind.

You are going to be CPU limited for most stuff at such low resolution anyways. I'd invest in some monitors. :)

It's going to be cheaper than two HD 6970 and if it needs water-cooling I will not buy the card. It should run cooler than HD 6970 CF or GTX 580 SLI, specially if the cards are installed side side like in my case.

For GTX 580 the temperature is a fake, the real temperature is 79-82C(reference cooler) dependig on ambient, case air flow.

Seems great. Almost the same performance as 2x6970. Can't wait for reviews from more reputable sites tomorrow... :slobber:

Any review lacking an Eyefinity setup will be useless, imo. I'll probably go to a 5760x1080 or 3240x1920 setup later this month and this card is overkill for 90% of the games available even at 2560x1600.

It performs like a 6970 CFX, draws power like 6970 CFX, produces heat like 6970 CFX. the only thing is that I bet it is a good bunch louder then a 6970 CFX i honestly am not sure what people were expecting. this is great to see this out of a single card but unless it is priced at $550 for MOST people a pair of 6950 2GB's would be a better and cheaper option.

but then again you always get 2 of these for some serious ePeen action:D

i like seeing temp and power consumption in gaming. furmark is nice and reliable and all that, but there are reasons why more roadblocks are being built to prevent such tests from working.

i also think the should post fps in furmark, aswell as temps and load to show efficiency.

Agree. I dislike that we are not being allowed to use the GPU to its full potential, but I do realize there are limits to what can be done :/

maybe off shore but in the US AMD would need to be utterly stupid to do that. I'm guessing it slides right into the 5970 spot. maybe around $700 at launch and then dropping to to some-ware in the $600's

I was expecting a significant gap between 2x6970 vs. 6990 considering mem clock difference. But as I said im my previous post I'm interest in Eyefinity only. The mem. clock gap might be an issue at ultra-high res.

I totally agree with u. I've tried these dual card/singe slot solutions and i can say that if you want CF/SLI do it the right way...

Maybe in a few months. If it does not have a MSRP of $600 they won't sell many when you can get two HD6970's for around $640 or two HD6950's for around $550 or less. The only thing this time around is that Nvidia will release a competing card and hopefully will keep the HD6990's price down unlike the HD5970 which actually sold for way more than MSRP due to lack of availability and competition.

looking at the one review, the perf difference at 1920x1200 is like 1-2%, but at 2560x1600 was like 2-5%, so i can only imagine it gets worse as you go higher

yea but sometimes people prefer it.. i myself would prefer this to dual 6970's if i was still on water and was using my stacker..i just switched but before i would of definitely went this route being as they perform pretty much identical.
mainly for the reason of a single card looks cleaner imo and needs less cabling also keeping the interior cleaner while still maintaining the same performance..

of course price would have to cost a little less then 2x6970s

Yup, perf diff will undoubtely increase as res. goes up but I'm eager to see how much. I'm building a SB rig for gaming so I'm limited at 2x8 pcie lanes with 2 cards CF/SLI and I'm very curious if this will be a bottleneck considering the firepower provided by 2x6870 at Eyefinity resolutions. Couldn't find a reliable article on this subject, though.

HardOCP did a similar test too. IIRC the results were a bit contradicting against the TPU test. But I would not be surprised if 8x bottlenecks a 6990.

As for the loudness of the card coming, just look up the xfx 5970 limited edition review that uses basically the same cooler. It's loud as hell, though the temps stay decent. Now add 100 W more load to that and you have 6990. The temps will go through the roof regardless of the already insane fan speed. This card really will need water to be usable. I don't think even an accelero xtreme could keep the card cool properly.

With a ~700$ price tag it just makes no sense. Two unlocked 6950's is the way to go if you want performance at a decent price. Or 570 SLI if you want quieter cards.

Dual cards in CF/SLI would be 2x8 pcie on socket 1155. One 6990 or the rumored dual Fermi card would be at 16x pcie lanes. :up:

6990 on 1 16x is 2 gpus on 16x ..16/2 = theoretically 8x per gpu.

Im going to jump on the 2x 6950 boat and say that would be the best bet again for MOST people because. you get the same perf. You get quieter cards, all the ehat get dumped out the back of your case. You can use AIR cooling practically, it's cheaper and 2 cards just looks plain cool:up:

Nope. One card CF/SLI ala 6990 gets full 16 pcie lanes. There's no pcie splited lanes because there aren't two devices sharing the bus.

Time for you to update the first post, onetreehill.

Anyway, the card performance looks quite nice, though it does consume a lot of power, but that was expected due to reusing 40nm. Though GTX 580 SLI wins most of the time.

I never really expected it to be faster than 580 SLI, but at least it's practically 6970CF performance, which I am rather glad of.

580 SLI is a lot more expensive, though.

Where are the Eyefinity reviews?!? Testing these cards at 25x16 is a waste of time.

Yup. Think latency... :yepp:

One single card, be it 1, 2 or a thousand GPUs share information than dump it on a 16x lane bus. Two GPUs over an (much slower) 8x pcie lanes have to share information back and forth over a much narrower band... It's a completely different thing.

Edit: My question is if this back and forth comunication over a "narrow" bandwidth, given the computing power provided by today's fastest GPUs driving a very high resolution proves to be a bottleneck or not.

you know that sli/crossfire connector thing.. its not only there for show.

the PLX chip isnt perfect either, and then there's that funny little feature that never saw the light of day since being mentioned for the 4870x2's...

I mean, if its that important why havent ATi been vocal about it?

All I'm saying is that no matter how much GPUs are in a single card, all of them is comunicating with the rest of the system as a whole with the given bus (pcie 1x, 8x or 16x).

I know there is not a magic interconnect chip speculated since before the 4870x2 launch. It's being speculated since before rv670x2 launch but I digress...

But saying a 2 Y GPU single card over a 16x pcie bus is the same as a 2 cards containing the same Y GPU over a 8x pcie bus is not correct (I know you didn't say this but the same principle applies). It doesn't matter if there's a CF/SLI bridge (wich have a finite bandwidth), they still have to comunicate with the rest of the system.

Pretty much what I had expected. Initially (as in last year ) I figured theyd have stuck with a Cayman Pro configuration to keep power draw and heat output at bay so I was a little shocked when the first mention of 375watts came to light but all said and done they positioned the product were it belongs. With that in mind why most would chose one over 2 6950s is beyond me. I'm sure the odd bencher will eat up a pair of these as I can see the attraction there but given the power envelope things have reached the benifts of such products are shrinking. Its not like you can throw one of these in a mATX case and expect it not to explode ;) ( and yes I know it can be nice to have 1 less PCIe slot occupied for those who use a lot of add in cards - this is one of the few things I enjoyed about the dual gpu cards I've used as I use tv tuners, sound cards and other devices )

I'm curious to see how these fair on water with a proper motherboard ( I wouldn't dare try to seriously overclock one of these on the average motherboard, melting 24pin connectors... no thanks )

Wow, just finished reading most of those reviews. Cliff notes: expensive, incredibly loud, hot and you would be better served with two cooler running traditional single GPUs in X-Fire/SLI. Basically what I was expecting.

the price will surely decrease, i think there's 2 reasons it's too high 1) they wait the 590 and so on will surely be able to kick it with a lower price, whatever is the perf of the Nvidia one. 2) availability ...

But after read some reviews, i really like the work have do AMD on it ... not completely perfect due to the 40nm... but well done.

5970 was pretty conservative on clock speed ( reference model ). The 6990 is all but not conservative. ( i want to believe this will maybe be a good lesson for next future high end cards )

Now AIB as Sapphire, Asus, Gigabyte, XFX have a nice support for work on it.. Im really curious to see what they can take out of this one.
( for peoples who want buy the card, it's urgent to wait and see what AIB's will bring )

We've just published our in depth tech article on the HD 6990 and we've also published a video review (swedish) on the card where we did some none scientific sound tests on tape. Our reference card has some pretty crazy coil whine which we dont know if consumer cards will suffer from but might be worth keeping in mind.
