Enzotech VRM heatsinks:

My CPU was at stock with PPU enabled, I didnt plug the SLI connector in properly after applying the VRM sinks, were getting BSODs, and reset the CPU clock while fixing it. I thought I had damaged my cards, but it was just that the SLI cable was loose on the second card, and activating SLI was causing a BSOD :x. I realised after getting the score that there was something wrong because I hadnt deactivated PPU, and remembered my bios settings were all set to default oops.
http://a.imageshack.us/img192/2817/890u.png
Managed to get the GPU speed up to 890 Mhz. It looks like its the VRM chips that are holding back the GPU clocks, such a shame that these cards didnt come with a nice large VRM heatsink :(
Hmm looks like it will be custom modding time!! LOL Looks good BHAVV , gees thats such a huge heatsink!! LOL on the CPU that is. Have you flashed your cards with Kets modified bios? I think you can def get some more out of your cards with a litttle more voltage.
I havnt tried the modified bios yet, I dont know what commands to use, I need a guide first.
I think that the VRMs are the issue as well. I have a sonic platinum and i'm thinking of custom modding it (removing IHS, applying better thermal paste and maybe replacing it with a better one) and adding heatsinks on the vrms. However I want a second GTX460 to put them in SLI. Do you guys think if I get the new MSI HAWX GTX460 (any news on that btw?when will it be released) and pair it with my palit, will they work good togethr?
p.s. is there any card right now on the market that has heatsinks on both rams and vrms?
I dont think they are putting cooling on the VRMs and ram chips on these cards because they are still very stable and overclocking fine within the standard voltage limit.
We need a bigger VRM heatsink block then those tiny Enzotechs :(
Hey Bhavv, do you suggest I get another palit, identical to mine, or getting a hawx would be fine for pairing them?
Yeah my palit runs at 900mhz now, i'm thinking of bios modding t overvolt it to 1.15 or so and try to go closer to 1ghz
Yeah but if I hit 950 i'd be happy :)
can everyone up load pics of gpu-z 4.5 it has the right shader count and gigapixel fill.
Here it is, it works, and shows the die size of GF104 to, so it's official - 334mm2 not 360-365 as it was wrong presumed.
Xdan- nice Oc !
http://i34.tinypic.com/21cbmu1.jpg
Man I love this card. Really wanna get a second one for SLI but sli hack doesn't support them yet :/
Haha ya these cards are awesome !! Can some of you guys post some vantage scores with the 900+ MHz OC please .
You can download the trial version and run 1 test with it so make it good lol .. I bought the advanced version of it for like only 10 or 20 bucks , great program
I tried a 900 Mhz Vantage run and they locked up :(
Back to 890. I didnt upload my scores yet, I am waiting to find their peak performance first, but that seems to be 890 / 2125.
I didnt get time to try installing my spotcool fan over the VRMs yet, but I can do that tomorrow when my new disk drives arrive.
Yup I had a lockup at 900mhz as well , but I only applied 1.087 volts :/ .. I think with more juice and a bit more cooling on the vrms , def can get away with it .. I easily fly 880mhz .. I'll see what I can push when I get home tonight.
Yay, I got the prices I paid for mine reduced because of my long standing custom :)
I paid £187 per card, and then they were reduced to £180 just a day later, so I sent in the usual sad faced plea and got the difference refunded.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.
I ran vantage trial earlier today and got a score of 206xx . I am on my lapper so I don't have a screenshot .
Palit sonic
940 core
1025 mem
1087v
I had few pixelation issues but the test finished fine. I would not call it a stable test but it was close. Hopefully a little more volts. I think I need to flash the bios. I can pass the Final Fantasy MB and Heaven , but 3dmark06 and Vantage are a little pickier.
Ya they stress a bit more but damn thats awesome! You scored extremely high! holyish... Man to just get a few pixels and still finish is def awesome, ya man crank up some more volts on that bad boty, what was your highest temps anyways? Gees you have me amazeddd lol..Also the Palit cards dont have any type of cooling in their vrms rights?
Ok boys and girls, this is about as high as i can go running stable with vantage, anything after that i get a lock up and mind you im on air, stock TIM , and stock bios, single card run.
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/9236/run2.jpg
This is mine... Couldn't get further rightnow, even flashed overvolted BIOS.
Which card do you have ? Royalk
Upgraded from an 8800gt to 2x 460s =D
New to overclocking gfx cards. I noticed that the default voltage was at 1.012 for my asus cards, and I couldn't lower it at all.
Anyway here's where I got to at 1.012.
http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...g/Untitled.png
Going to try these settings on furmark now.
Did the test at 1920x1080 32msaa in Extreme burn mode, displacement mapping, and post fx which I hope my gpu's aren't this stressed in games lol.
Took a screenshot in fullscreen, but it came out black. Did a 30m run and had no artifacting. GPU1 - 78c GPU2 - 73c. I might do another run in windowed for the sake of getting a screenshot.
Looks good :)
No, The Palit's have no vrm cooling but I put some enzotech HS on them. There is a pic of my card in the "460 coolers" thread. My max temp so far has been 41c. That was after 2 hours of testing and my room was about 90f. In a cool room it stays around 38-39c. Its on water of course. On air it hit high 80c's!!
I also hung a 90mm fan off the back that blows on the vrm's and memory. I have 9 120mm case fans that keep fresh air in the case.
These cards like a little voltage.
azureoval what card is that ?
Hey guys, Im about to buy a GTX460, but what brand and what version should I? I thinking of MSI Cyclone 768MB, but, which would you recommend?
Beside, impressive OC! Hope I reach 900Mhz :)
Uhm, I will love to buy it from Tiger but, I live in Argentina :p:
And should I go for a 1GB or the 768MB version? I think that the 768 is capable of a tiny more OC power.
The 768 Mb is crap, dont buy it.
1 Gb - 32 rops, 256 bit memory interface
768 Mb - 24 rops, 196 bit memory interface.
Even if you manage to overclock the 768 Mb one a little further, its still going to be slower than the 1 Gb version.
I got a side fan working, I used the Antec Spotcool:
http://a.imageshack.us/img839/2686/furmarksidefan.png
:)
Can you post pictures of the rig with the side fans etc? :) I just got my X3380 and soon i'll be revamping the interior of my cabinet so would be nice to get some tips.
Interesting OC you have there :) . I have some EVGAs coming in that i am slapping on some FULLcover waterblocks from EK . Im assuming they cool down the VRMs as well. Im going to OC the crap out of them lol:up: Also try going a bit higher on your core clock lol i wanna see what you can do max with some more voltage.
I'll take them when i next open the case, should be soon when I get a molex > sata cable for my new SSD.
I tried using a Zalman fan bracket first, but it didnt work because the cards are too high, and the bracket made contact with the top card, causing conduction and higher temperatures.
Then I just tried the antec Spotcool which is all plastic, and was high enough not to touch any cards.
The temp on the top card before was 71 degrees at stock, 91 degrees at 875 Mhz in furmark, so it made a huge difference reducing the temp down to 78 degrees at 890 Mhz, but it still didnt allow stability at 900 Mhz GPU speed.
I have a side panel fan blowing towards the side of the card, and an 80x80 on the card's "front" not sure if I explain myself. I'm waiting to see if the SLI hack will be successful with the latest drievrs for my mobo in order tto get the second gtx460 and post u lot some results.
BHAVV- What SSD did you buy? I have 2 of the 64GB Crucial300s :) running RAID0 , ran HD tune and damn speeds are insanely SICK lol.. 520-545
Same one as you, but only one. I might add a second later, but Ive heard that Raid on the Rampage III's Marvel controller is rubbish :(
Ouch Marvel eh? LOL ditch it but yea marvel is fail . The Intel ICH10r controller is nice :)
I can use a single one on the Marvel, but if I decide to get a second I'll switch them over to to the ICH. Its my first time trying out raid on my sammy F3s, and I plan on buying a second C300 after the prices come down, so I'll use one on the Marvel, then when I get a second in the future move them to ICH.
Im not going to be changing this motherboard for a long time though, so its a shame about the Sata III ports being rubbish in Raid.
For my next motherboard, I'll be waiting until Intel's native Sata + USB III, and I'd definately like a rampage version of that :). It also needs to have the wide PCI-E slot spacing that my current board has, thats the most important thing for dual graphics cards.
I finally got all the stuff for my new build together :D I'll be tweaking my system up before I look at doing any other tweaked BIOSes. I'm hoping some VRM heatsink mods I'm going to do will see me over 900MHz.
Just got done installing my SSD and reinstalling windows, heres the current interior:
http://a.imageshack.us/img837/8185/dsc00707d.jpg
I got fed up of waiting for my Molex > Sata cable, so I went ahead and installed a whole modular Sata cable thats at the top of the picture, and then the Molex > Sata cable arrived right after I were done :x.
I'll swap them out later, the Molex > Sata cables are much neater as I have a Molex cable running up to the 5.25" drive bays for the CD drive, with a split at the 3.5" for the SSD.
The PSU area is a mess :p
Hehe cables suck !! I have all my wires sleeved in a black and white themE :) my newest setup I thru into a tj07 case , I'll try and get some pix up in a few weeks , still have some custom modding to do :) ..
I think heaven is bias now :(
didn't nvidia buy them ?
I think you should all show some real world gaming.
crysis anyone lolz
Lmao oh boy !!! I would but I don't have crysis , but I do have bfbc2 :)
Here is one of the benchmarks I passed at 1k. I have also done 3d mark06, AvP, and Heaven. I still get glitches here and there so I wont call it stable but it works. I have also raced in Dirt2 and passed its bench. I think my sweetspot right now is 950. I have no problems so far.
Hi there!
I got a small question:
I watercool my Gtx 460 1 gb from gigabyte.
The block that I use don't fully cover the GPU completely
Could it be a problem?
Running game I never go above 45 deg and with furmark never above 50 with the voltage at the famous 1087 mV.
Overclocked of course.
thx!
Well guys, Im like this |--| to buy a GTX460 Cyclone 768MB, would love a 1GB but there is a little margin of FPS but a huge one in prices (u$285 vs u$345).
Before I drop the hammer in the button of the GTX460, any advice? Change thermal paste? How much voltage should I put when benching in air? How much for 24/7 stable? I will appreciate all the help that you can bring me with this new baby.
A new doubt. If I buy another brand of the GTX460, like ASUS, I still have the option to change voltages with a program?

Review: TweakTown\
I pulled the tigger on this one today
GTX 460 will replace my ATI 4850 512mb
You would have to contact TigerDirect about that
D'oh! I tryed to buy it but when I put the coupon code it won't recognice it, and the shipping cost are of u$121, final number u$354, more expensive than buying it in my country.
Damn, wish I live in USA :(
Cards are stable enough to bench @ 1000MHz core however not stable enough for long term folding@home. I must say these Koolance blocks are fantastic. Can't wait for motherboard RMA so I can install the third one.

1st card.

Stock voltage.
Core 860
mem 2300
Memory OC is very impressive 2300 for now and still going up...
^^ this on the stock cooler?
Yes that's on stock coolers , most people have another fan usually blowing on vrms , or the cards to briing in fresh air . The reg Oc most people are getting is anywhere from 800-950 stable on air .. Water as well has hit 1ghz but not sure if it was stable .
Cole- you can push those to 880 with voltage @ 1.087 and it's vantage stable :) , with applied modified bios I am sure you can push way more with more volts and those cards run cool as well . I had a pair of them ;)
Having a side fan blowing on top of the cards, especially in SLI helps a lot.
At the moment i am playing just with 1 card. No side fan.
Preorders for the MSI GTX460 HAWX are open!
in ocers.co.uk
As suspected, the card comes with the awesome twin frozr cooler :D They say that 1000mhz on cpu is possible (but not guaranteed).
However it's quite pricey, maybe in a month or two when it drops a bit it will be a very good "bang for your buck" choice.
In the meantime, anyone interested in a standard MSI GTX460 1GB, Look Here £181. I've also finished modding the stock cooling on my GTX460 :D I'm hoping the much better contact on the VRMs with some real TIM instead of a :banana::banana::banana:ty pad is enough to let me hit 900MHz as removing the IHS from the core will be a real pain in the arse.
Yea Scan reduced mine to £180 after I paid £187 for them. They were nice to me for once, normally they say no :(
The cyclones are still really good at £180, just £10 more for the awesome cooler and military class stuff (same as on gigabyte + asus with a different name, no whine noise unlike Palit :))
I need better cooling on my VRMs to hit 900 too. I were strongly disadvising people not to get the standard Palit version, and some lucky guy went and got one still, and it hit 900 Mhz with no artifacts right away
The amount of luck needed on these GTX 460s for good OCs is immense.
If I can get a GTX 460 1 GB, I will take the Gigabyte OC.
- Nice cooling capacity
- Silent
- Non-reference design
- Heatspreader on VRM's
For 199€ here in France, it seems the best choice IMHO
835 MHz @0,987v

I was going to see how my crossfire 5870 scored on Heaven. how ever I think my powersupply is crapping out.
it's 1200 watt and with both cards at full load the computer shuts off completely.
so I can't make it threw the whole thing :( My cpu isn't even Oc either. :/
so if someone could care to run this a one single card then I'll post my 5870 on extreme x16AA 8xAF.
As long as your temps are good it is fine. I have a DD Maze5 waterblock on my palit and it does not fully cover the GPU either, however my temps are max 40c.
The top of the gpu is just a heat spreader the GPU core is under it and it is about 33% smaller. So the surface area of your block is prolly about the same as the GPU core. Although if you block is not centered on the GPU you may not get the best cooling.
http://www.shrani.si/t/m/QY/1ONNk0XU/06-460.jpg
Now i am testing my 2nd card.
Ditto. With 1.1v my card does 880 core absolutely fine, but it won't really scale above that due to VRM heat which is insane. I happen to catch the back of the card with my finger while it was loaded when I was plugging a fan in, boy did it burn. Even with a HS I would guess those VRMs are hitting 80c. I don't want to think about how hot the VRMs on those Palits are getting
Finally got some cool weather for benching.
This run was clean. 3Dmark06 - 985 core - around 68-70f in room ambient.
This is a fun little card. Keeps surprising me. Go water folks!!!
He was getting 900 Mhz at 1.1v, and 925 Mhz stable at 1.087v on a Palit
He had VRM coolers on it actually, it shipped with them somehow, but it had the plain no heatpipe block of metal on the GPU (non platinum), and he also said it was whining really loud (no high quality caps, or is that a fan problem?).
The reference design, Asus, MSI and Gigabyte all use the higher quality caps / chokes and stuff and dont have any whine and much lower temps (MSI temps are amazing somehow), but the Palits whine, and Gainward use the same PCBs.
As MSI said, theres no guarantee that other companies will use the higher quality stuff, even if its standard on the reference design. The GPU is down to luck, but you can choose a better quality PCB (gigabyte, asus, msi, even reference), plus better quality cooling.
Even with the MSIs - the reviews said that they didnt come with a mini HDMI > HDMI adaptor, and someone that bought them from OCUK didnt have the adaptor. Whereas both of mine came with a mini HDMI > HDMI adaptor in the box!
They are crazy, theres random variations between contents and cooling even between cards by the same brand. The MSI ones seem to do great even without VRM cooling somehow though.
In reply to the previous post, i've got the Gigabyte GTX 460 1GBOC, and it does whine when OC'd when folding@home and its not the fan, my previous GTX 260 whined just a little bit louder than this one and i really hate that noise. So don't give the wrong info that these don't make that really high pitch whining.
Dunno what noise you talking about but I had a set of the oced gigabytes and never had an issue , guess it's hit or miss with what you buy .
I werent giving wrong info on purpose, this is the first time I've heard of a gigabyte card whining as opposed to maybe 20+ complaints about the Palit.
The Gigabyte card was the best selling at OCUK, not one person on the forum reported whining noise with this, or the MSI model which was their second best selling (OCUK staff posted how many of each they sold in the week they were on offer, 70+ gigabytes, 50+ MSIs). Yet just about everyone that bought the palit said that it was whining.
I have benched stuff at 1015 and completed them, although with artifacts. I tried 1.212v once and my screen went blank, heard a pop, heard a beep, and said oh crap. Had to shut down and restart and thankfully it worked still. So I am a little hesitant.
What do you run your core at 24/7 ? At 985core I had a hour long session of Dirt2 last night (1080p everything max) and it ran perfect. Got 90fps max 70min in the built in benchmark.
Josh
Lowfat - damn that's nice man , can u post me a screenshot of a score in vantage with your Zotacs at that OC please?? I might RMA my eVgas lol and pick up zotacs or the MSI cards . Atleast I was able to upload evga bios hehe ;) .. Also can you show me a score with identical settings as my cards please? .. Wanna try and do some comparisons here an see what cards can put out what with same settings considering we have about the same specs .
http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/6919/nothappy.jpg
Usually a lockup means a no go .. When I pushed the OC on my gigabytes I had that would happen . But ya I might keep the evgas i have . Gotta do some tweaks on them . Waiting for ket to do a modded bios on these .
http://www.shrani.si/f/1N/nJ/1VOQRWHC/33418.jpg
No PhysX
Damn Cole lol , def nice score ! That CPU OC def helps
for sure tho ;) .. Can u do a run with physix
on?
I've tried and I can't remember the exactly score. I think result was 37k. I'm not sure. I know that CPU score was 74k
Lol geesss man , did you submit it atleast on vantage ?? Haha dude you have bragging rights now ;) .. Those gpu scores are murder ... I'm really starting to regret sending back my gigabytes now :/ ..
Gigabyte 460 are great but i hate my board. Stupid PCI-E slots are to close together
