I recently bought a 3005F and it's nowhere near as good as my 3003B. The 05 can only do 4.2 on the same voltage the 03 takes to do 4.5, both HT on.

So far so good.. :)
just booted mine up..
Vid - is 1.16 :)
After a 4 hour burn in at stock pushed to 4160mhz..

Ram - Patriot Viper II 2000 mhz Cl8 6GB kit. running at 1600mhz cl 8-8-8-24.
So far tested wprime and super Pi 32M and looks to be stable.. still playing around but was impressed with a boot into windows 7 at 4160Mhz with only 1.28V in bios.:)
is this good or do i have a average chip ?
cheers and thanks for reading :)

have you ever seen "E" batch ?
Wow Nemesis, nice setup! 980 and 3 470's - beautifull clocks and 3dmv score!
I looked at your thread - What temps where you seeing under load?
Edit - Think I found it - -112 to -116 (pot temp or cpu case?)
My new i7 980X box retail FPO 3005F584 is dead after 15 min of using
wow, this is getting scary.ive got one on the way and these things a dropping like flies.
did you do anything out of the ordinary?like run it with just 1c or 2c with HT off?
any Xtreme OCing when it died?if you could provide some info that would be great.thanks
I put it under LN2, tested cold bug with 6 cores + HT and 6 cores without HT, one run 3DMark 06 and it died, it was a really crappy cpu
Voltage ? vcore/vtt, what mobo ? MSI Big Bang ?
Guys,
I am confused now, What is the difference between a Westmere DP (ie X5670) and a Westmere (Gulftown)single socket i7-980x ?
Both has LGA1366, so can I plug in a X5670 into a Gigabyte X58A-UD7 with a X58 chipset ? I saw a couple of X5650 working with X58 chipset motherboard above.
I thought that the X56xx can only work with Tylersburg chipset aka 5500 chipset .
Can somebody help explain this ?
Thanks Zalbard and Sam Oslo for the info,
So, both the Xeon X5650 and i7-980x are equivalent ? Does somebody know what the difference between the 2 cpu ?
Sam,
What stepping is your X5650 working with GA-UD7 ? Can you use the B0 stepping or ES sample ?
There is some mobo mfg that does not support B0 Xeon ie
Tyan mobo does not support Xeon B0 stepping
His X5650 is a B1 I beleive.
No, X5650 and i7-980X aren't the same or even close.
i7-980x is a unlocked single QPI gulftown
X5650 is a locked dual QPI westmere with I think a 20 multi and 21 on turbo
Tyan dual socket boards shouldn't have issues with B0 Westmere's unless your talking about a single socket Tyan board and in that case Iwould ask why you'd want one?:D
Most GB and Asus boards will run a dual QPI westmere.
The EVGA boards need a simple wire mod to run them.
@wtfdc
A few MBs need hard mod for X56xx, but GA UD7 doesn't need it.
My X5650 is B1 ES. It is a retail stepping, but I've seen B0's on GA UD7 too. If you get one of the latest beta BIOSs it will unlock the Uncore, and the CPU will OC better too.
EDIT:
This CPU belongs home on a SR-2 actually, but It has been running fine on UD7 while I'm waiting for it. You should consider the SR-2 if you haven't ordered the UD7 yet, then you can OC tow CPUs. ;)
Here you go http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...st-bios-28441/. You can get the GA-X58A-UD7- F7p BIOS.
@sam
What is an SR-2 ?
@movieman
Thanks for the info above, but my friend did try to install a dual socket westmere X5670 B0 on a dual socket Tyan mobo and the mobo would not post (aka no video),, even though he had upgraded to the latest bios. At the Tyan support website, Tyan explicitly said that B0 Westmere will not boot and be supported , only B1 and above will work
i drive over and pick up that SR2, you won't even have to spend postage....
sound good :surf: ?
I have bad luck :(
Firstly my A0 Westmere died few months ago, later I got some i7 980X B1 ES'es which are crappy :( My first retail box i7 980x has got Cold Bug at - 110*C and was crappy, second retail box died after 15 minutes, third retail box is the most crappy Gulftown which I ever have got and my forth retail box is dead out of box, never used...
Can someone beat me? :D
@Miravo - +1 with eva2k - i think you need to try your hand at a diff. cpu for a while.
Did you check your mobo socket? - make sure no bent pins?

I have a lot of boards bro ;) and those CPUs die / are dead on different boards
What is really interesting, the forth boots ONLY on Rampage II Extreme but it CAN'T ENTER OS, on other boards (even on other Asus boards like R3E, P6T DLX, P6T WS PRO it doesn't boot at all).
I am waiting for new i7 980x, my last chance and if it fails, I am going to play with 1156 and AM3
Michal ;)
I'm also with Eva and SteveRo, You dont have hand to this cpu  How can You kill so many 980 ? I push vcore above 1.9v to gulf and it's still a live. One from my test, go to owner and die in about two weeks, hmm dual core without ht can easy do this ? Maybe its good time to try something "new" like you said 1156. But I think Michal, You can show something on amd
Go ;)
Marcin
My ES i7 980x B1 which got even up to 2.1 vcore, worked on 1,2 cores etc. is still alive... and it is one of my first Gulftowns... Other ES i7 980x B1 which were tortured in the same way (maybe not 2.1 vcore but 2.0v :D) are also completely alive and I use them for few months. Those retails are one big sh*t... this is just a joke... Intel come on... give us new revision... all my Gulftowns worked on the same motherboards... it's not my fault (maybe I don't have skill for overclocking but I know how to boot up CPU at default ) and not other hardware... one retail is still working though. From other topics I can see that those retails are VERY VERY fragile even more than C2D E8xxx series which I killed >30.
can i ask you guys what the average stock vcore you guys are seeing with your i7-980x's?
just curious as to some of the 980's posted here and what their vid's were?
I have been benching my 980 at up to 1.6 vcore under chilled water (4.8 linx stable ht off).
Folks under ln2 or cascade often report much higher - 1.7 to 1.8+
no i mean the stock vcore for your cpu's at defaults 3.3Ghz,what the MB sets for auto at stock
cool thanks.so your is probably around 1.16v
mine is 1,19v and load gives me 1.16v
EDIT-actually i was looking at some of your SS in the other thread and ET6
shows your stock vcore as 1.06875v,wow you have a nice chip

Good to see more non-3003B 980s join the thread. Thanks for sharing
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the best at OCing Intel's. So I may be able to get more out of it. But I'm satisfied with this as a 24/7 setup, especially given the low CPU temps at this voltage and speed.
Anyone know of a GOOD document on how best to OC this chip with the REIII?
I've read numerous documents but have not found one that I thought was real good.

Good to see you got stability with 4ghz sniper  thanks for sharing
Looking good sniper - keep it up!
So finally I decided to break the virginity of this 980X and went above 1.375v...
Thanks :) I just copied somewhat similar voltage from your screenshot and got a semi stable run with really small problem size lol
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/3490/980x45linx.png
^ you are on water right?
If you mean me, nope everything was on air... I myself was on sweat (water if you mean). The rig increased my room temperature to around 27C... Almost activated the fire alarm lol... I just dare not torture my chip longer like that. Back to stock frequency and stock voltage now :)
Ok, mine should be with here possibly tomorrow (980X)...
Any different parameter to consider when overclocking with this Gulftown's compared to Bloomfield's? or they are same?
As far i know... Uncore can be 1.5x of the memory frequency... anything else to know?
Thanks for the advice.
With turbo boost my 980X at stock can do 3.6GHz for single-threaded programs, which is a lot better than a 930 at stock :)
For 4.0GHz stable I need 1.25v, which increases the maximum temperature to 60C under load, and exceeding 70C along with those graphics cards stressed at the same time. (Everything is on air)
Thus the performance gain of 10% is not worth the OC from stock.
By the way, 980X has 2 more cores and is 50% faster than a Bloomfield at the same frequency, for my MATLAB programs.
Mine is Batch 3005F801, currently testing @ stock...
By the way... how accurate is Core Temp for Gulftown? Max temp seeing while running LinX is 36C... Watercooled, and at 23C case temp. HT enabled.
Just got my 980X and UD9 today.
Batch is 3005F584.
SLBUZ COSTA RICA.
Will report once the cooling setup arrives and I'll start torture testing ~ 3 weeks.

Yeah, I'm hoping mine is as good as yours... I want to run basically at 4.2GHz 24/7 with as minimal voltage as possible. :-)
Well I think my CPU is absolute c r a p.
I managed a 4256 Mhz (133Mhz x 32) run with Linx 20 passes, on 1.45  volts. Temps were around 50 celsius on water.
As soon as I bump it to 134 Mhz I get unstable, even with a 12 multi.
I would say the F is for fragile all right...
I can't even run at stock voltages/frequency anymore.. As soon as I do Windows 7 Ultimate locks up after about 3 mins, regardless of what I'm doing.
Dodge this batch.
I think I got a voltage hungry chip from batch 3020A477, as it wont stabilize in LinX @ 4.6ghz with HT enabled at any voltage below 1.54375v in the bios (1.541v idle in OS) for LinX. Needless to say it doesnt appear to scale voltage very well at all. I'll post the screenshot once the run is complete.

Wasn't stable for too long, bad contact on block and reversed flow on inlet outlet.
This chip really doesn't like high clocks, but rather mid-high clocks and low voltage.
Currently at 4.2 200x21, 3400uncore and 2000mhz ram at C8-9-8, 1.318V and 1.34QPI, stable for LinX however I want, and Prime, although don't believe me if you want, I'm not going to waste time spending hours for stress testing.
Gaming + high load rendering, all stable.

i want to buy 980x in the next 2 days and I've been reading the thread since the first page, and i am trying to gather from you guys which batch is the most trust worthy for overclocking, looks like the 3003Bxxx is the most stable and safe ones !! .. and reading about the gulftown dying is kindda scary  !!!!!!!
