At a 195 BCKL my NB is at 43C after 45min. of WCG in a rather cool room (~50F). With more reasonable ambient temperature it usually pushes 50C but afaik has never gotten above 48C. This is all with stock TIM and cooling in a case btw.
been lurking for many years.. just want to say thank you to all the contributors on this site.. you have helped me IMMENSELY... 90% of what I've learned about OCing has come from YOU
After reading this thread and some reviews I decided to remove both the "gigabyte" blue plates from the NB cooling apparatus. I also added 4 x Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E 120mm Case Fans to the side panel of my HAF.
Using Everest 5.5 for NB and Mobo monitoring (20c ambient):
Case open, Gigabyte plates ON - OC testing: the NB temps approached 80C.
Even at stock speeds the NB approached 70C.
MOBO was consistently around 50-55C. OC or stock.
With plates off, case panel on and 4 fans my NB temp dropped by 30-35c and Mobo dropped by 15-20c.
Current temps are around NB 45, MOBO 35.
Removing those plates and putting some air on those heatsinks makes a big difference. - for those using this board- worth the effort and very easy to do IMHO
I believe the NB is rated for some pretty high temps, but that 80C and the mobo temps were making me nervous. I plan on running this rig 24/7. I'm more confident now about attempting some higher clocks this weekend.
davelakecity, welcome to XS.i agree about this place is the place
to learn.when i first got into OCing 2 1/2 years ago, seemed like everyone
here was more than happy to teach and help out.:up:XS's rocks
yea i removed blue NB plates on my EP45-UD3P/R's too.all four boards
im going to do the same with my X58A-UD3R as well.even though my
temps are ok,but it will give me piece of mind.i just got my WCing setup
installed and will begin the Ocing adventure very soon.
That's incredible davelakecity. Thanks for the info and welcome to the forum. :welcome:
Actually, I haven't had a chance to look into it yet, do they just pop off or something those blue plates?
The Gigabyte plates are held on with double sided tape . Both feel well secured . But when I pried mine off as soon as they start to move they just come off easily .
I used a small screw driver .
Welcome davelakecity !! Great people here !!
j
heres my first attempted OC with this board and new cpu
using my new WCing setup.going to try and lower the vcore
and see how low i can get it for 4.2Ghz.also need to work
on lowering the vtt.then i'll work on the memory timings:up:

somebody test this mobo in high BCLK?
i will be trying for higher bclk very soon.so i will let you know how i do.
i just need to nail down a 24/7 stable OC for the big May 1st crunch-a-thon.
once i have that done i'll see how high i can go on the bclk.
Think I saw a 230 BCLK earlier in the thread.
Nice results and temps radaja, I just bought this board for my new cruncher/media server and have been running at 100% load for a few days now at 4.2. It needed 1.275 vcore but only 1.28vtt the temps are a bit higher, the mid 60's with a Thermalright Venomous-X.
sRHunt3r,thanks.yea these make great crunchers.your getting great temps for air.
Definitely nice temps! I'm looking at replacing my Black ICE 240 for and RX240 rad, I see you have the 360 model, any idea what the flow resistance is like?
Hey radaja - could you post your other voltages IOH/ICH when you feel you have a stable OC with your memory optimized ?
I really have no idea what my flow is, my RX360 is on my UD7 rig and I have no flow meter :( I have been looking into one ..... I'll try to pick 1 up later this week.
I wouldn't worry about it much. Mine sits around 47 degrees @ 4.2ghz (see post # 8 for specifics). I don't have any extra fans, but the HAF is pretty breezy :)
Yeah maybe you could still RMA the board after modification, but is it worth it? Let us know how it goes if you do though, and pics plz! :D
well i installed vista x64 and worked on lowering the timings and got this.
looks like 1.21v is as low as i can go for 4.2,at least with using vista x64.
i'll use this OC for the big crunch-a-thon the first week in May.

^ yeah ...,but now i want a x58a-ud3r & its not available here :ROTF:
Yeah, my chip can't touch that..
I still have some tinkering to do tho...
Thanks for the info.
I will have my flow meter, temp sensors and controller tomorrow but I will not be able to install it until Thursday. I will post my results but I warn you that they will be skewed as my RX360 is mounted outside my case with quick disconnects on the outlet of a 14k btu stand alone A/C unit.
heres my latest,i only ran it for an hour because theres a thunderstorm brewing and i need to turn
off the computer.going to run linx on my x64 install to join the 4.5Ghz linx club next.

I see your only in Dual Chanel will it run like this in triple channel?
I backed mine down to 4.2ghz w/HT on and lowered my vcore and Qpi/vtt
sRHunt3r and cowpuppy, thanks guys.well im running water with AC.as for the dual channel,i have to run it this was because
i've only got a 2x2GB kit at the moment.the g.skill DDR3-2200 7-10-10-28 kit.im hoping to sell these soon and get a triple channel kit.
but im pretty sure i can get the same clocks with triple channel, might have to raise the vtt?

would like to know if you have problem with those settings, cheer!
HiCookie
Thanks for those hicookie - might just give these settings a whirl when I get back to work and see how I fare
update setting with adata 1866+ (8,8,8,24)
This kit i got its elpida hyper, but sorted bad from 2200+ modle
so you could run this 200-2000 with CL7-7-7 but atlest needs 1.72~ 1.76v
for Suepr pi 32m. so back to 24/7, i lock vdimm to be 1.66v
and using xmp you could oc to 200MHz CL8. by the way i change cooler to
Thermaltake frio, give me 4.2GHz stable

Went back to 4.2Ghz w/ht on. Did some tweaking of the voltages. I don't think I can run 4.4w/ht on unless I switch to water.
still 4.2ghz is fast it's just not a cherry cpu and any1 getting 4.2 should be really happy they at least didn't get a dud.

this is cooled with a Venomous X with two Scythe SFF21F 1600 rpm's in push/pull. I can't wait to get it under water.
does this work with e5620 32nm quad core xeon cpu ?
I got my UD3R and i7 920 D0 a cupple of days ago. The batch (3936B217) seems to be a rather moderate one, so I can't go very high at the moment. I already need some 1.35v for 4GHz and I get temperatures in the high 80s at that level. I use a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 with the two stock fans. They're probably a little slow with their 1200 RPM as are the case fans with two 120mm@1000 RPM pulling in and one of them pushing out.
Anyway, here is the current OC:
http://frakrate.com/share/oc1.png
I'm currently pondering two things. 1) Selling the 920 and getting a new one 2) Switching to water.
Well, let's see what the future brings :D
help my friend decide
X58A-UD3R or X58A-UD7 ????
I took the blue Gigabyte plate off of the NB heat sink last night. It was hot, as it had been running without a fan on for a while, so the adhesive tape was soft and it peeled off quite easily. Temps are now a nice 48C which is 8-10C cooler than it was before.
Also, got the vcore down nice and low now.
http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/2619/i738118v.jpg
Popped in a second 5850 as well.
are you talking about this thing here
http://i44.tinypic.com/okymc7.jpg
Did you just pull it off ? Does that void warranty ?
Yes, yes and probably. Like I said, I did it when it was hot but it still took a bit of force to pull off.

there's a Rev.2 UD3r ,anyone having it ?
I ordered one last week ,lets see which rev. i will receive ........
Well, the manual is already up over at GA Jpn site but the BIOS is still listed at FA.

afaik, FA = not retail release yet.
Can't find a pic of the actual mobo online but the manual is there for downloading.

Hi chew*, is version 1.x, i don't know exactly, is available on a local storage, maybe i can ask son friend of my if he can go to ask and see the version.
Can you post tour results please :). I'm selling my Classi to test another board and this one is very interesting, price/overclockability.
Thanks in advance :)
Well tbh I never really beat it up at daily user stability. But here's some work I did on water and on DI and or Ln2 with it.

Got to dig around my ftp site for some more. I know i have more results on water somewhere.
EXCELENT!!!! thank you very much chew* :D.
I think this mobo will be my next shop ::yepp:.
On Classi i got 5ghz validation and superpi 1m run but i have CBB and CB so there is nothing more to do with that evga MB.
Dry ice will be the "highest" xtreme overclocking that i will get, no LN2 on Chile :shakes:
Regards from Chile
by looking at these i can tell
Rev.2 UD3R is having 12 phase ,where Rev.1 was having only 8
Rev.2 UD5 is having 24 phase ,where Rev.1 was having only 12
Rev.2 UD5 is having 16 phase only.
http://www.giga-byte.com.my/Products...me=GA-X58A-UD5
oh got it :)........ with increased phase will UD3R OC better ?
Rev.1 UD3R scores better than UD7 ,bench's at bit-tech when OCed

only "A" UD3R & UD7 sell here
For those without memory info in their sigs: what 3x2Gb kits do you run in your Gigabyte EX58A-UD3R? Thanks
Hi chew* and all you guys, anyone have experience ocing this mobo with v1.0?.
Thanks again :)
i did this with my W3540 last night

I can pass 20 passes of IBT at 4600 with HT off, but I really want to get 4.5 HT on and it is proving to be a :banana::banana::banana::banana:.
The only gripe I have with this board is the stuck uncore multiplier issue for the 6 core Xeon chips.
Other than that this board is the :banana::banana::banana: for $200.
Thanks for the ss :), it will be nice see 225 bclk on air if you can do that :D
Had another little fiddle today, and almost got CPU stability at 4GHz (211x19) on 1.25vcore and 1.34vtt, even booted at 222x19 (4.2GHz) but with stock cooling, stress testing was a no-go. Backed off to 211x19 for 4GHz and after a couple more tweaks, I'm hoping to return to work with a 'closer to stable' machine tomorrow morning. The one thing I noticed when running ram bandwidth everest benches is that it scored very low - i.e ~6000MB/s on read/write/copy. A little unfamiliar with what could be happening, but I'm guessing uncore multi might be out - that possibly correct? HT is on btw.
I'll post some screenies up if all goes well tomorrow. It seems like I've got a good board & chip which is gagging to go under water!
The 8-phase 1.6 - quite a big difference for a board revision (i.e 8-phase to 12-phase). Hopefully it wont affect my oc too much, but this bandwidth thing is a little irritating! I'm sure it's just a certain setting I've set incorrectly - i7 is still a little new to me.
Ok, next week i will post some results with core i7 930 and revision 1.0.
:)
heres my contribution. for some reason i cant get past 21x190 stable and even crashed 18/20 pass at 21x188. my i7-920 fbo/batch 3936B217 pack date 01/05/10 any suggestions maybe the memory controller hits the wall allready ?

Hi Guys, can i check when you power on the board at OC settings , does it take longer than usual to startup? mine at 4.0Ghz , power on , then fan spin , then power off then power on again , then take a good 10 seconds before the bios screen comes on...
I was going through all the post and no one seems to talk about this issue.
someone knows the difference between the review in 1.0 and 2.0 of the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard?
Just page earlier.....
Btw,
Giga Taiwan has new web page:

very, very nice, is that with rev 1 or 2? Either way, these boards really cut the mustard, looking forward to getting mine under water! :)
rev 1 and I am at 1.376 and on pass 13/20 as we speak and so far maximum temp is 74c:clap:
I have another rev 1 board and a UD7 coming this week. The UD7 is for my X5660 since that board has bios fix for the Xeon 6 core chips. I am going to kill it with that board and that chip:explode2:
First off, excellent thread. Thanks to all contributors. Very helpful for me to compare what voltages and speeds/timings others are getting with this board.
The only time I have seen this behavior is when I try to boot with too much clocks or too little voltage (i.e. unstable) the machine tries to boot, fails, then boots with "safe" settings. If you really screw something up, it will just power off and on over and over until you press the glowing blue button at the back :)
-------------------------------
Now for my questions: Just trying to find max Bclk right now, seems to be 215. I'm sure it will go higher if I add voltage, but the voltages I set in bios and what I see in OS are very different... specificaly the Vref
http://i839.photobucket.com/albums/z...z/215_Bclk.jpg
just weird, I even changed the Vref volts to .77 in bios, but they still report like that. I'm guessing it has something to do with the very relaxed timings on the ram??
(*edit - found the problem, set Vref all to normal and this is now fixed *)
215 is probably higher than I'll need, but when I first started clocking this chip my first sign of instability came at very close to 4GHz and that was using only 1.225 V in bios... So I figured I'd take a step back and take it slow and careful, this might be the first chip I've ever had that is actually better than average.
Plus it's my first time clocking on intel, and first experience with gigabyte boards and I'm still struggling with figuring out what all these voltages actually do.
What suggestions do you have to reach higher Bclk, or just be happy with 215 and start on the ram and chip?
*Update* never mind about max Bclk, seems like my chip is pretty much average for late D0 920's - can reach 3.8 easy at less than intel ref voltage, 4.0 with HT on takes a bump to around 1.3, higher than that and my temps started getting into the 80's.
this chip just begs for water, but the board has been a champ, this system seems to be happy at 4.2 with HT off, which is fine with me, since 90% of what I do will not benefit from HT anyways...
here's my setup's happy place, on air at least.

oye tool chile que revision de la placa tienes 1.0 o 2.0?
hope you have good luck with multi 22X and hard OC
Yep, revision 1.0, it's really good mb but this 930 is s h i t (y), doesn't clock good like my old 920 :(

Not bad for first run, no tweaks, no optimization here :P.
Next week more SS and results, for the moment multi 22 is good for me :).
Cheers for that Stasio - will give that a whirl tomorrow, anyone else notice anything nice with the bios yet?
Playing around, no tweaks yet. Superpi 2m is the nacional benchmark on Chile :P.

does anyone know if a i7-980x will run on the UD3R with bios F4?
i nothiced hiccookie was running a 980x but he was using some
internal testing bios's it looks like.
EDIT-NM i just looked at the gigabyte site and it seems F2
added support for intels 6 core cpu's,so from F2 and up will work.
hi
can you please advice something for my rev 1,0 board dont see rams at any slot excluding the 1st white?
if i install all my 3 sticks into white slots at mem detect only 1gb is visible. but windows can see it, cpuz can see it but i can only utilize 1gb...
Tried powering up with just 1 stick, then 2, then 3? Worked for me....
Just a little update - got 212bclk stable, now working on 215, but seems likely that QPI/vcore arent helping any more. I'm assuming skews are the next step - any hints anyone?
**image removed for update to 215 :)**
*edit - with the f6i bios btw.
*edit #2 - managed to get up to 215 bclk with the help of setting skews to 50/50 - I've saved the profile which should hopefully get me to 4.5GHz when this goes under water in a few months, although I imagine it won't be as simple as upping vcore and multi?! Trying 218 bclk now but it's definitely becoming more of a struggle, probably pushing the rams a bit too far considering they're only 1333, but seemed to have more bother with the 6x ram multi. I'll take on board any hints you experienced users have to offer, as I'm new to all this i7 lark! :)

That happens to me after i change a setting. But then after that it boots normally.

Yesterday received my x58A ud3r - it is revision 2.0.
Which voltage is sensitive to this motherboard for bclk around 200 mhz with i7 920 c0?
