Ya, and it'll take another 18 just to get all the goo off the boards from him getting so excited!! Muhahahahaha!

So Dave, did you leave a spare key under your doormat perhaps? :p: It's only an hour and a half drive (or so) for me... then I'll be the second and only person with a W555 board in the USA!
page 5 already ... and the board's not even turned on yet ...
This will be a loooong topic
How to explain so you guys understand..:D
I found out Wednesday that the board was coming.
After I'd picked myself up off the floor, changed my pants, cleaned the drool off the keyboard and wiped the spittle off of the monitor I started to think on what I'd need to get it built.
I have the cpu's,coolers and EVGA 2-260GTX video cards and I'm hoping I can get it to fit in one of my big SM cube cases.
Then I realised that this needs one big mutha of a PSU and to put my piddly 6x1 gig of Kingston DDR3-1333 ECC REG in there just wouldn't be right and not sure if those would even work. Then add that I just had one of those die on me and in RMA and not here till next Friday.
Add in to all of this that on Thursday New Hampshire got hit with the worst storm I'd ever seen, 14" of rain in 12 hours, 70-80MPH winds, and electrical power out to 300,000 in the state.
I do have a small 5500w generator so I was covered .
I made some calls to try and get some help with the memory and PSU issues but that was late Friday and at the end of the workday.
So bear with me ok and remember, I'm just a guy with limited resources like most of you but this will come together.
That I promise you.
I'd also like to thank all of you for the good thoughts and support.
That means a lot to me.
Ok, it's up and running!

:sofa: Sorry, I JUST had to!
^
W T F srsly...
You linked a wrong thing, man. :D
Thats a pic of 32 W5580's in a cluster I beleive..
I hope you tell us what 1.2kW PSU you end up getting.
I was so excited... then i saw the second line of threads. :hm:
it can run crysis.
W00t Dave.. you mean old bastard  :shakes:
Just after I go off Skiing for the weekend, you sneak up on us with this baby
It really is 'Teh Sex' as someone else said so fittingly.. I can't wait to get my hands on one of those beastly motherboards
Oh and, no, you DON'T need a 1,x KW PSU :p:
With those two 260's something in the 800W range is more than enough. I'd get a Corsair HX850 if I were you...
Me, I'm gonna run it on a 430 or 500W Seasonic with lots of adapters, as always  :ROTF: :sofa:
You've all seen me comment before on PSU's.
The heart of a system and honestly there are only two brands I trust.
Corsair and PCP+C..
I'm not saying all the others are junk as surely there are some good ones out there that I'm not familar with but these two brands I know to be good ones.
I have both here in my systems and neither has ever failed me.
Then think of my situation.
You've got an essentially irreplaceable board, a pair of chips worth over $3000.00, couple nice vid cards, 4 SAS drives and you want to trust it all to a PSU you have faith in.
Any price range on this and the cheapest cpus you can use and price on board? Just wonder if I should just ignore it ^^
All rumors, but the board will probably be around $500 or so. Cpu's will most likely be priced around where the current Nehalem based Xeon's are with the ones worth getting ranging from $400 to $2000 per CPU.
One thing that might be kinda neat on this, is the ability to stick processors that only support 1066 memory speeds and then overclock them up to higher speeds.
Personally right now I'm aiming for a pair of X5650's which will probably be the least expensive 6 core processors released, and probably come in at the same price point at the X5550's of $1k per CPU.
5520 gainestowns were $379.00 each the last I looked but the upcoming L5640 Westmere's look interesting depending on price they come out at.
2260's but with a 19 multi on turbo and should do 4000 on this board.
Not really, since I know I can beat his numbers and easily.
Just because it's not posted doesn't mean it hasn't already been beaten at stock speed on another board..;)
I think poke349 can back up that statement of mine..:wasntme:
:D:D:D
Though... he seems a lot more interested in taking down the world record for Pi...
(in terms of total digits computed, not fastest time for any fixed size...)
For the smaller benchmarks:
I think he already knows that he doesn't stand a chance against Xtremesystems if he can't overclock.:rofl::rofl:
Especially if people are going to use chilled water and phase change. (I have yet to see anyone run y-cruncher under LN2 yet...)
(I think I've seen one screenie of a Phenom II X4 under DICE @ 4.6 GHz... but that's just about it...)
<Chef>
Now I know how all those white women felt!
</C>
Corsair 950TX should work. Or 1000HX.
2 x 182W (GTX 260-192's)
6 x "5"W (RAM)
4 x "10"W (hard drives)
409W
2 x 200W (CPU's)
=====
809W
1 x 24W (pump)
8 x 1W (fans)
=====
32W
You're probably looking at a max of 850W for the entire system at max theoretical load, including the use of first-revision hardware (such as GTX260's taking 180W/ea). You seriously should be fine with a roughly-1kW unit, especially a Corsair or PCP&C, or their associated OEMs (Channel Well or Seasonic).
Only five pictures movieman? Come on! post more pictures :D
I would like to know what will happen with two i9 processors with this board ;-)
Peter said 1200w with 4 gpu's.... i think. lol.
edit
Sierra - notice those two boards are 4-socket.
With my E5450's @ 3.6ghz and 4870X2 @ 850/975 the most i've managed to pull from the wall was about 850w.. and thats everything loaded.
Average is more like 610w, and that is with an LG W3000H 30" 2560x1600 and Toshiba Regza 46" on the same circuit.
omg i live in the concord area can i come see it?!!
OH and Movieman ur not feeling BLUE anymore . It should be : Im Feeling RED now ! :yepp:
Dang, that's 12 cores and 24 thread right? How much RAM do you think you'll need?
Edit:
Ok TX950 should be better than 1000HX, 1000HX is made by CWT. But dunno about 950TX, since TX750 is also made by CWT. CWT = China Well Tech = Legendary maker of Smart powers :p:
Edit2:
Yes, 950TX is also made by CWT.
Edit3:
But CWT is way better manuafacturer now that it was back then, using Nippon Chemicon (good) capasitors instead of fuyjiuus ([crap]dunno how they write that actually) and teapos (crap).
Actually the cheapest Hexacore will be (is :p: ) the L5640 ;)
Its multiplier is a little low though, especially considering I have no idea whether retail chips will have a +2 turbo mode as well (probably not), so you might wanna get X5650's anyway.
Here's what I sent him yesterday :D
Quote:
2x X5680 @ 4Ghz crunching – 150-160W each = 320W (conservatively), MAYBE 400W if you go up to 4,4-4,5
Motherboard with NB, 2x NF200, and some losses in the CPU VRM circuitery (digital VRM usually is >90% efficient) = another 100W
2x GTX 260 in idle – 70W, fully loaded with GPUGrid, FAH or whatever = 350W
Add in another 50W for fans, a few HDDs and small stuff and you arrive at a theoretical peak draw of ~850W if everything is OCed to the brink and fully loaded.
Now, a Corsair HX 850 can handle around 1KW no problem. While crunching, you won’t exceed the 500W mark (factoring in the PSU’s efficiency maybe 550W from the wall, but that’s it).
1,2KW – sure, for benching.
Anyway, I do understand his point - if Shamino wants him to use a 1,2KW PSU he's gonna use a 1,2KW PSU, simple as that ;)
Hell, I'd use a 2KW PSU if I'd get that board in return :D
Most likely a dead motherboard ;)Quote:

Some thoughts on the PSU issue;
Now I'm not totally clueless on adding up what is needed and what is not but consider this:
Do you remember when that gentleman named Moses came back from Mount Sinai with those two "tablets" in his hands?
This is sort of the same thing to me.
'Thou shalt not use a PSU of less than 1200W capability"
And so he did and all was good in the land..
Thats going to be a gigantic change jar.
Very nice Dave you deserve it  But before putting this beauty to serve a noble cause please get us some HWbot points!!!!
I can't wait to see what kind of CPU scores you'll get! ;)
hey dave dont forget about my stuff please....
impressive! ahead of the chasing pack as usual MM!
there really is no such thing as too much of a good thing
nice job by evga, not only for doing at all but for getting it out that quick
i know you will have a blast MM
i'd probably be sitting there with jitters and gravings.
Been speaking with some people today and if all goes right this may be "the build of the year" and I don't mean that to brag.
Not as fancy as some of the stuff darthbeavis and others do but a absolute monster.
Stay tuned..:D
Not if I build a dual gulfie with 72GB or 144GB of ram.:rofl::rofl:
jk... Not this gen... At least after Ivy bridge when AVX and FMA are out.
MM... Hexacores were soooo 2009. When are you getting some dual octocores to run on this beast :lol2:
Oh to be under an Intel NDA :shakes:
Oh wait ... that means I couldn't crunch with it, either ... screw that shyte!!
Damn that is a very very sharp board. Very nice Dave!!! Hope to see some awesome numbers from that setup soon!!
Nice post at the EVGA forums btw, epitome of class as usual :)
Thank you.
I meant what I said there.
Peter is special.
I've been in the "workforce" since I was 16 in 1968 and because of the jobs I've held met tens of thousands of people in my life.
You get a feel for people over time.
He is just one of those who is secure in who he is.
When you meet him your met with an honest smile in what can only be called an "open" face.. No guile.
What you see is what you get.
Very rare in the world we live in.
Then you watch him at work and see the intensity in his eyes and the skill.
I kid you not, it was a treat to watch him at work.
I'm so jealous. Enjoy your new toy, Dave.
I gotta get me one of these; then I will let it sit and collect dust as I would not be able to afford the cpu's :ROTF:
Can't wait to see this get put together along with some #'s.
Hope you can get your parts soon Dave:up:
so much talk and no pics of this thing running yet lol. i guess i'll just stay tuned for the worklog. so first worklog right dave?

FAQ of W555
You can run different models of Dual QPI Xeon together – such as 5520 + 5540, even Quad Core + Hexa Core together – but must be from same family – ie, NO for Westmere + Nehalem – Performance scaling is fine
You can run turbo mode on one CPU and non Turbo Mode on the other too
You can run a single CPU (Must be Dual QPI) in any one of the 2 sockets
You can run Non ECC normal DRAMs but also ECC Rams too
Dual QPI Xeon DRAM Multipliers/Uncore Multipliers are locked so you will only be able to use maximum 2:8 or 2:10 depending on segment of CPU
You can run 200 – 205MHz Baseclocks on air – 230+ needs LN2
Motherboard is 381mm width by 345mm length
Motherboard supports 4-way SLI on current GTX285/upcoming Flagship VGA
Motherboard supports 4-way Quad Fire
Motherboard will ship with typical 1366 Xeon socket back-plates but normal X58 socket back-plates will be bundled in package
Motherboard bundled with ECP V3 – Vcore Boosters + Speedfan 100% Click Boost + CPUs/PCIEs Disable
Power Consumption Tests:
2.8GHz x 2 @ 1.20v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 1x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 535w from AC socket
2.8GHz x 2 @ 1.20v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 4x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 991w from AC socket
4.0GHz x 2 @ 1.30v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 1x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 766w from AC socket
.
4.0GHz x 2 @ 1.30v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 4x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 1,243w from AC socket
4.2GHz x 2 @ 1.40v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 1x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 913w from AC socket
4.2GHz x 2 @ 1.40v w 24 threads Full Load + 12GB Rams + 4x GTX285 Classified Full Load = 1,390w from AC socket

Any idea what cpu was used ? thx.
MM not a bad board, not bad at all :p:
Okay so my question whether a 1200W PSU would be enough was answered.
Good point :D
SA says GTX480 needs 600w minimum,40 amps on a single rail - might need
2x1200w in future,if it's true of course.

You'll laugh but a name has been one of the things I just haven't figured out yet..
Tossed a lot around..haven't found one that "sings" yet..
The thing is there are two major parts to this:
The board and the cpu's..
Big Blue speaks to the cpu's but forgets the board and can't do that.
maybe ' W555+X5680= if I can get that smiley into the title spot..
Then there is the memory that will be in this.
Right now all I want to say is that it is "OMG uber incredible I'm in shock " memory
One fast comment: We see daily some of the crud of this world but in the past few days I've been speaking
with some of the very good ones.
News, Mountain Mods will have a motherboard tray ready for this on March 19:up:
www.mountainmods.com
http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/606/watxassembly.jpg
Is that gonna fit this board?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813182177
I guess the question is: Is the w555 the same size as the MBD-X8DAH+-F-O?
Not saying that I'm building anything soon. But I'm just curious.
And just as I received a mb tray from MM they announce this. Would have loved this tray for my new build.
I already have a Pinnacle-18 with an XL-ATX tray, I'll be able to get the new tray and slide it right in. I've been looking forward to this board for a long time, I can't wait.
Movieman, can I come visit this board please? I'm in Manchester. :D
I don't even want to know how much that thing cost!
hmmm... this guy has one with 2 560s and a 280... http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/M...hip_CYO/5.html
:p
seems he's building a rig for this board.
http://img.techpowerup.org/100223/IMG_0161.jpg
actually i measured. it will fit just fine. only 1.3inches into the rad but theres plenty of room between the mobo and rad for the 24pin and anything else that needs to be there.
and yes.... ram fits too.
