I do really hope at least 80% of pc pre-orders get cancelled before monday so Infinity gets a huge pressure...
I can live with a delayed release if it means we get the game the way it should be released.
I still want the game, so am gonna download it first, if I like it, than I buy it.
But such stupidity from IW is crazy, these guys who work there are so out of touch with players it's a crime, don't these guys EVER do market research, I would image they are gamers themselfs, so how do they get away with doing this crap, it's mad.
i give them time to repent :D althou my friends already cancled the pre-order i will cancle myself in about 7 days
if they still going to do that.. and as vit_pr0n said they actually promote piracy on that move
over a million in sales lost already if you figure 23000 signatures and canceled preorders x 50 dollars a box
except this game will retail for $60 US, so the loss is even greater...
Dedicated servers are non-player hosted servers. Its a proper server rented from a server hosting company running on a high bandwidth, low latency connection. Its up 24/7 and usually managed by a clan or a game community web site, and of course the hosting companies themselves.
In other words Dedicated servers offer a revenue stream for 3rd party companies which helps extend the life of a game. Take that away and none but the IW has anything to gain from the game, which only leaves them with their customers... good luck to them...
I never intended on playing this game on PC as I will admit that I'm more of a console guy now. However, I do know what it means to have dedicated servers. They're almost a necessity for big named titles to have proper online play. I really can't seen any intended logic in doing this.

i was laughing so hard!! hhaha
For the record, we have 24k signatures. Lets hope it keeps going!
Well, no actually. I canceled my pre-order and I will be downloading a pirated version to play the single player now. And I intend to hand out free copies to all my friends and tell them not to buy it.
And there will likely be a good player base for the pirated version. Pirates can only play on other pirate servers, and if you look at FEAR 2, another fully Steam integrated game with no dedicated server, a majority of servers are pirated.
canceled my pre order yesterday, not installing steam, not playing the game without dedicated servers
do u have links to the boycott?? who r those 2 guys
anyway this idiot on IW forum has some funny things to say
http://www.infinityward.com/forum/vi...?f=13&t=124082
to suggest that P2P has less lag than ded server is ludicrousQuote:

I'd say DLC / micro transactions are more a symptom of an industry full of unhealthy business models than the actual problem. Companies try these things because they are desperate for short term profit in order to cover increasing cost budgets (the real problems)...
Ive had evey console since the very first nintento in 1987, console games serve a different purpose then PC games, each platform is played in a very different and distinctive way. Racing games, fighting games, side scrolling games, things like that, i love playing those on a console, as well as many other titles, but FPS games, strategy games, those are what i play on the PC.
It really stuns me what a slap in the face this is not only to pc gamers but to the server companys themselves like gameservers.com, could you imagine the loss in sales on MW2 from the 25,000+ servers that would have been rented? COD4 had like 22,000 servers at one point in time i remember.
Well if they make same kind of account system as in BF2 but also without ability to make private servers (maybe only contracted companies can make server), it will cut down pirates away from multiplayer since they need authenticate with master server to be able to join to any online action.
I hope you understand what i mean here, my english isnt really good :)
Depends in the way Infinity Ward implements this new multiplayer system. They can make it so only contracted companies can make a unofficial servers so no server files bundled with game it self.
I just spent a few minutes over at their forums watching the thread grow at a rate of a page per minute, I've never seen such rapid replies before. Preorder cancelled :)
Well I W I L L N O T be buying this title. I think that we will look at other options like the new Operation Flashpoint or ARMA 2. The Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series was great. Maybe we need to look into going back in time....Infinity Ward...R.I.P.
Duke
I don't care about having to authenticate with IWNet every time I play. I DO care about finding a server with great people to play with and ALWAYS joining that server. The point people are making here is that people can't rent out dedicated servers and enjoy a relatively lag-free game. With matchmaking and P2P play much like consoles, we're limited by the host's connection and PC.
I know many of you have voiced the same thing, but I'm not buying this anymore.
I was peeved at the $60 pricetag, but I was still going to buy it. Now that's done with, they've lost my sale. :shakes:
*Edit* Oh, and this is after rushing out to buy CoD, CoD2, and CoD4 all on launch-day. I've been a long time fan.
The petition is up to over 29,000 people who are obviously not happy with this decision.
29000 x $60 = $1,740,000 in lost game sale revenue.
potential lost sales of servers from server hosting companies:
$40(average cost per month)
20000(average COD4 servers)
$800,000 per month lost revenue
Multiply that by 24 months(COD4 has been out that long)
$19,200,000 in lost server revenue for 2 years
+$1,740,000
---------------
$20,940,000 TOTAL LOST REVENUE FOR GAMERS AND SERVER COMPANIES
Go sign the petition, if they dont change the gameplay with dedicated server option, DONT BUY IT...
Duke
I am totally disgusted with this. I thought that Activision/Infinity Ward had it together pretty good. COD1, 2, and 4 were all good. Was looking forward to this (though I was going to wait until it was $50 as I refused to pay $60 out of principle), but now that they've utterly RUINED it, I'm not buying. Screw you IW, you had stuff going good then you slap us in the face? Forget it.
Yep, keep signing up people.
This is just bad, everything i didnt like from console gaming is now brought to PC gaming.
Also steam and VAC arent making me happy either.
In my old clan i was responsible for the COD servers on the Linux box and i also was a PsB, PBBans and GGC-Stream streaming admin.
I always enjoyed the control over our own servers with heavy PB scripts and our own server rules.
This is now gone and a big blow to the PC gaming community.
As also said before this is also a killer for smaller GSP's, some companies rely heavily on the call of duty series.
mmm looks like since i left nobody is doing the maintenance on the servers, lazy bastards :shakes:

they will not get 2 pc purchases again!
Wow, this is really going to be the most pirated game that ever existed, it has everything to it.
Pirating games that activate via steam is hard though, still doable though. I am disgusted too by this blatant disregard for the guy who got them where they are. Pre-order canceled, screw you IW. The bigger you are the harder you fall
I really don't know what the hell they were thinking?
Did they ever thought that PC gamers are the exact same audience as console gamers?
I mean, if we enjoyed the offering of the consoles world, we would buy one.
But we know what we want, we want to be able to chose, and this time, we chose not to buy MW2, as it is served to us with a big slap in the face.
Screw you IW, this is hate.
I'll wait till it's 15$ on my favorite online serial reseller and then I might buy it. SP pirated version will be fine for starters as I am still enjoying COD 5 multi^^
Good job Activision/IW, selfish corporate A$$holes
Looks like admins are renaming their server descriptions to further vocalise everyones distaste at this move.
How can IW be so out of touch? Surely someone in there must have said, "Umm guys this is like uhm what we do that eh got folk playing COD MW in big numbers in the first place, this will kill our rep with this section of our audience"
Maybe they dont care, at this point they maybe assume that their revenues from consoles and even with the reduced number of PC players will be strong enough to absorb the backlash regardless of how large and sustained, as PC gamers we have been in the minority for a long time.
How many of those 30k people actually would have bought the game anyways? I'd bet less then half. They're just mad that they'll have to wait a couple more hours/days to pirate a hacked working version. :shakes:
wow great post, everyone knows everyone that uses a pc is a pirate yup  you vote with your dollar and i for one wont be buying anything from activision blizzard in the future, and i wont be pirating them either. their ceo is an idiot to put it politely and i refuse to support his way of doing business.
Its still possible. Soon enough a copy will be posted on TPB that includes the pre hacked files so you don't need to do any work. Then just download and install, and hand out free copies to all your friends (and tell them not to pay for it) :D:D
EDIT:
Please note I do not support piracy, I was going to pay full price till I learned about this. I support actively hurting the bottom line of :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::b anana: companies. It makes me feel much better than just passively boycotting.
why is the industry looking at ea as a good business model i just don't get it. I'm gonna be glad when most studios pull out of the pc market completely and gaming can go back to its roots not this cash grabbing, garbage promoting stuff we get now. :(
an interesting idea...
the entire industry crashes
GPU development slows down
independent developers start becoming more popular
making good games
...start charging more for them
and more
nvidia/ATI start to notice and make better GPUs
programmers get lazy
devs want more money
consumers want last year's game but with better graphics
companies press users until its no longer worth it
game industry collapses again
are we seeing the first iteration of the CYCLIC MODEL OF THE COMPUTER GAMING HOBBY?
quite possibly :( well enjoy the good stuff while it lasts i guess  like everything in life!
F this I'm going back to Doom II. We play it every LAN.
If a game is worth it, buy it. I bought Operation Fashpoint 2, Arma, and was planning on picking up MW2 but     that. I don't see how a company can sustain by ignoring any part of their fan base. Yes PC gamers might be a minority but we can put money in their pockets. I can think of quite a few underdeveloped titles that I would rather pirate than throw money at because of their half ass development and lack of support for the pc platform, but at the end of the day MOST PC gamers will happily give 50-60 bucks for a well made game that caters to our entertainment needs. Add me to the list of cancelled preorder and pirating upon release. :soap:
Incredible. Not a lot else to say about it.
I can see the board meeting:
"We can combat piracy by having authenticated servers, the more control we have the easier it will be to monitor, because we all know every download is a lost sale..."
LOL!
The people who pirate MW, are the people who play the singleplayer and only dl it because they can, they wouldn't buy it in the first place...Its a pain to play cod4 with a cracked copy, a real pain, and only on hacked servers full of cheats, so the user experience is brutal, most people that play multiplayer own the game.
As for the lock down on mods/ customization, they obviously looked at the wealth of mods and custom maps out there, and went... what if we could lock out the modders and charge for it? Maybe Xbox players are ok with that because they don't know any different, but PC.. nope.. mods made for passion, versus profit are always better.
And in the podcast and on IW forums, consoler's seem to not have a concept of what community means... having a regular server to go to, and play with your friends.. not a friendslist.. you dont have time or place to get to know people, how they play etc... because your always being bounced into a different server.. and you dont get to know people within one match or round enough to add them to friends lists.. this is why console games are empty on multiplayer , because there is a huge lack of teamwork and trust of playing with the same group of guys...
I think they should have spent some money and actually hired a couple social psychologists to analyze their format change, and they would have forseen this backlash
As it sits... COD is dead, with this format, I dont buy games for the singleplayer... I buy them for the multiplayer, and i think i m not alone in this as a PC gamer..
We just need CS 2 !! lol. This game had so much promise too.
Someone tell me what was their motive behind not having dedicated servers?
damn 30,000 people! the news is only a day old. this looks bad for IW. i hope it does hurt their reputation and sales. they can sit back and be lazy or throw away the pc community like its not important. all of the other publishers are more than willing to take the 10 million plus sales of the cod series. its great to see the pc community getting together and starting boycotts. it actually works.
This is all fine and dandy, but you must realize a petition is a passive community response and it will be dismissed by IW. We can go a step further and actively impact IW's bottom line.
Not only has my purchase been precluded, but as soon as it's available I will download a fully cracked pirated version of the game and play the single player for free.
Then, I'll make a lot of copies and hand them out for free to all my friends. At some point I may start charging $1 for the copies, thereby capitalizing off Infinity Ward's unlicensed intellectual property.
In no way do I support piracy, and I have purchased all the games I own. However, when companies start getting :banana::banana::banana:y and make douche decisions like this, the community must swiftly react in force and make it known that this will not be tolerated.
I am 33 years old and I've never been so excited for a game release as I WAS for MW2. I feel so foolish now watching the game previews and emailing all new info to friends. Only to be kicked in the head by IW.
WTF? I was so excited for MW2 and now I see this? Really? Multiplayer is the only reason I play the cod games. I've played through cod4's single player once or twice, but aside from that it's been multiplayer. I've had cod5 since launch and haven't played a single player game, only multiplayer... This is a :banana::banana::banana: slap to the face. I'm not going to buy this.
Let's not kid ourselves. On that list of 30,000 people, I wouldn't doubt >90% of those who were going to buy it in the first place still do.
Well im NOT buying, whats the point buying a game what isnt any good online???
Dont get me wrong, ill buy good games even without a (good) multiplayer (GTA, AC, BioShock) but i will not accept this from COD.
I was already disappointed with WAW and now with MW2 it will be even worse.
In all truth, I expect about 75% to still buy it if they're legit sigs.
I know I'm not, but still. Even considering 75% still buy it, 25% of 20 million profits (duke nukems post http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...&postcount=134) would put it at about 5 million which is more than they could EVER make with dlc sales on the pc.
Wow infinity ward just wants to shoot themselves in the foot really.
My point is more that people need to do what you're going to do instead of worrying about the petition. Nobody ever gives them any attention. Write an actual letter--don't email. A physical piece of paper explaining your thoughts without being disrespectful would do much more if it started coming from numerous people. Emails are cheap and angry rants are cheaper. Petitions aren't even worth clicking on the URL. Do something physical (not buy the game [don't just say you won't], letter, etc) to express your discontent. If it actually hurts them, it isn't like they can't modify how servers work to allow traditional DS at some point.
Personally, I'll deal with it and will be buying the game.
I expect those that signed the boycott don't really buy the game, so what's the point with signing a boycott anyway?
I am loyal to my word, aren't you with yours?
You've not accounted for the fact that the game will not be 60 USD in every country. I can almost guarantee that it will be 70-80 USD in Australia, which means if there are Aussies in that petition they are losing alot more.
At least I wasn't excited about this game, so I don't feel nearly as let down as others. I had planned to buy it eventually, but I never followed the trailers and stuff.
Personally I never liked the Pro Mod that was made for competition. I always thought that the game should be played the way it was made, not modded to all hell and to the point where you forgot whether you were playing MW or Counter Strike. So I personally like that they're not allowing mods. BUT, I do not like not having dedicated servers, most of the time you're playing on the servers with the lowest pings or servers that all your buddies are playing on. Not having the ability to jump in and out of servers and being more "console" like blows. Not being able to play on custom maps also sucks, they're are some really talented guys out there that have made some incredible maps, why would IW take this away from the PC gamers, unless they're greedy :banana::banana::banana:s. I'm still debating whether to buy it or not now, because everything that I hoped it to be has been cut in half...
Mods were there to balance an unbalanced playing field.
Mainly there to limit classes, so you can't have a team of 5 snipers / 5 Spec Ops.
IMO, They should adopt a strategy such as Battlefield 2, to prevent piracy, yet still include the dedicated servers that we all love.
I'll still buy the game, should be fun regardless. =)
http://www.realitymod.com/
and lets not forget where the most popular map on that titale came from.
there was also a massive warhammer mod for BF2 which stopped production after it was almost done due to so much of the BF2 community moving to 2142.
There was much more, the game modded heavily bro.
VAC is just a reporting system, it only works after there have been lots of reports(hits) on the same person, and only after a jury at steam has decided will there be any action! By the time something positive has happened its long after the fact and the server has long since been ruined. It works nothing like how valve claims it does.
This a complete and utter fail, I'm sick of our gaming experience being gimped for the sake of some crappy outdated junk that happens to have a stranglehold on FPS nowadays!
Got rid of my 360 a few months ago and started PC gaming. Just getting used to using keyboard and mouse setup (played consoles my entire life). I was really looking forward to this game and multiplayer, but definitely have my doubts now. I didn't know much about dedicated servers before this whole issue came up, but after reading about them and seeing the benefit they bring with options in playing, I can't believe that they would do that.
Oh, and no modding? The few PC games I have played have been enhanced greatly by user mods. This company is just trying to make more money and they probably will, just not as much as they thought they would. I hope they don't though.
Edit: I feel bad for the long time PC gamers. If it wasn't for you guys, the multiplayer phenom wouldn't be as big today as it is.
And this is why I am playing Diablo 2... again. Epic fail Activision. I was already mad enough when we first heard that the games price was going to go up but this is the final nail in the coffin. It is time to get nostalgic again screw this business.
Give them the finger, spit on their faces (Activision, IW) turn around and move on.
IW was already shifting towards consoles BEFORE CoD2 was released.
I don't remember where, but I read that IW wanted CoD2 to be modern warfare rather than WWII and being also released on consoles, but couldn't because Activision didn't let them do so, stating that modern warfare wouldn't work or the like.
With CoD4 they changed that of course, making it modern warfare and releasing it alongside the consoles.
And now this...
In short, "PC FPS game developer" IW = Only CoD1, back when they were the guys who left EA and MoH:AA development team to make a game that would put MoH:AA to shame, and they did.
They became something else after that
Too slow? COD4 was consider one of the fast, mindless run and gun game for the casual crowd. You must be living in the quake era to consider this slow. The maps are designed for 16 people. And I have already experienced spawn issues just with 16 people, and I can't imagine what 32 would be like.
No PB and dedicated server doesn't bother me much, as the game is designed for console, I might as well play it on a console.
lol someone posted a topic on Infinity Ward forum title "sh*t", and he posted a gay :banana::banana::banana: picture in it, along with some mumbo jumbo like "hi, i am from china, people here are fat ..."
and the funny thing is that he spelled everything correctly, with the right capitalization. that is one of the best troll i have seen
42280 signatures.
$2,536,800 potential loss.
:P
Piracy isn't wrong, Ripping off good paying customers for a crappy game is wrong. When you torrent a game, if its got good quality you usually end up buying it too. Believe it or not, piracy is one of the best advertising and publicity you can get. There is many a time I bought a game I had no intention of buying after playing it, relized just how good it is and got it.:shakes:
Multiplayer is the only distinguishing feature PC games have. If the multi sux, its almost a guaranteed flop.
60$ to play a 4 hour game is wrong. I rather spend 6$ and rent the game since there is no real reason to buy it. torrent? :shakes:
well this isnt news i wanted to hear today.
off with their heads!
Plus you aren't factoring in the bad press IW is getting. One of the first rules in business is that bad press spreads much faster than good press, and for every amount of bad press, it takes a much larger amount of good press to offset it.
So not only is IW potentially losing a lot of money directly, the potential for future losses is greatly increasing due to their image being smeared.
if u do that it will tell them that the game was good buy pirating stole the sales and they need to make stricter protections or no more pc games or delayed pc. if no1 buys or pirates it then they will retool from doing something wrong on their side
i heard that they were having no demo, but having a beta like cod5, if we get that it will break IW if it works like the console versions
I can't believe this... Either they have someone really really stupid in upper management, or they have been paid off by sony or MS.
How can anyone think this is a good idea?
The COD series is famous for its multiplayer, and that is one of the big reasons it has been selling so well in the past. With this crap, people won't have a reason to buy it.
After the initial screwups from COD5 (and a lot of them were dedicated server related) it is pretty unpopular now compared to COD4. Seriously how do they expect this to sell anywhere near as much as COD5 even???
Matchmaking? Relying on other people's rubbish connections? No custom servers/community servers? Getting randomly shafted around to different servers if the server you play on gets disconnected?
screw that
As someone who has a legit copy of all the previous COD games, i won't buying this for sure until they change it.
And as someone who helps run COD4 comps at a 400 person lan party, this sure as hell won't be run as a competition, or even played.
http://efragtv.com/video/live/?chan=1
Talking about MW2, come join us.
Wow, this is lame. +1 on the petition
Are you serious... no demo? :shakes:
So, the things that may stay my hand in purchasing this MW2:
1) Charging PC gamers the same price as console gamers, when the extra $10 is a liscencing fee that M$ and Sony put on all games originally to make up the amount that they were losing on each console.
2) This utter crap.
3) No demo.
I think that there are more as well...
Damned mo:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: s they better offer me the option to pwn console nubs since the 2 versions are ~ exactly the same otherwise I am going AC 130 on their console fueled ass.
