I'm all in, 980X 64 bit spanking away :)
Hello all. I got this email today, and joined immediately. I don't care too much about the points since i don't believe it means anything. But i do like the cause and have 4PC's and a laptop ready to all crunch there brians out lol. Thanks again.
Thanks to all those who joined today. You may find crunching to be addicting.:D
I'd like to offer my thanks also but your not quite off the hook yet.
We need everyone for this to work so you got a Mother,Father,Sister,Aunt, friend, etc ask them to come and help for the first week of May.Get them started early.
Let's make this an event that they will have on the network news.
"Bunch a kids create worlds largest supercomputer"
Welcome!
Check out this page for great info >> http://www.ibm.com/podcasts/howitwor...07/index.shtml
( thanks, poppageek )
Thanx
hi everyone i have been crunching for a while and i wanted to ask what do you at this point becuse it says that some of then are ready to upload do i leave it
ps is my rig doing good becuse i have never done this before and its running at 100% and max temp 67c thanks guys sorry if you cant see this i dont know how to make it bigger :)
You can either ignore them (they'll be reported at the next scheduled server update) or update manually (Click Projects, select WCG and then click Update). Either way is fine.
alright.. i think i have 1 computer up and running for XS atm... gonna try and get my wifes computer up and running on this also...
First of all Thank You for the invite :)
What a great idea!!
Installed the x86 version and read instructions, got it working. Then saw there was a x64 version. Installing the x64 beta version but don't know what to do when asked to "attach to project" or "attach to account manager". Which one should I select so I can get crunching right away!! My rooms getting cold lol
Is there a section somewhere on running the x64 vr.? Can't seem to find it on the WCG site?
Thanks
John
dam it just got a bsod neary hit 6hrs what do i do now
any help
Just attach to project, select WorldCommunityGrid.org and type in your username and password (assuming you've already made an account)
Haha, that's how you know I spend way to much time around these guys.
Ok, so the question is why did it blue screen? What kind of cooling are you using? What are your temps? Mem OC'd (and to what)? And what voltage you running at?
The thing is your computer isn't used to running 100%, so even if it's stable at 3.7, it might not be for 100% usage... My guess would be either it needs a little more VTT to keep all cores up, temps got way out of hand (VTT too high or mount gone bad) or Ram doesn't have enough voltage to support the clock it's at...
A lot of guys think their systems are stable ... till they actually put them to work for more than a couple of hours. This sub-forum isn't just about pushing WCG, it's about achieving the kind of stability that lets you run a system at 100% load 24/7/365 and then doing something worthwhile with it.
Got one of my systems all set up (did some testing, adjusted for optimal usage, and will schedule for %100 usage while im not at home)
I will try and have more than just 2 systems for the mentioned date.
(a bit disappointed to see the team with only 5 members)
FIVE members? You're kidding, right?
This is the team you're joining: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/te...mId=69B8364XP1
or are you talking about the GPUGrid team? (they're not the same thing)
yeah, sorry ... i was looking at the wrong thing ... :D
Alright, I'm in: not that you're likely to notice the venerable S754 box in the team stats :)
BUT (bit OT here) I am accumulating a pile of parts for a refresh.
P55 Sharpsburg board and numerous ancillaries in hand so far.
Have been wavering between i5 750 and i7 860 though.
MMs email naturally begs the question-which would be better for the team?
Just give me a reason... :D
Which ever unit you want to run will be fine :) Sure there are plenty of people who build machines specifically for crunching and nothing else, but you don't have to do or buy anything you don't want to.
Of course which ever CPU has the most horsepower will serve you longer before needing to be upgraded, and more cores is better for crunching, but it's your money and the decision is completely up to you. ;)
Like DA said, the decision is yours, pick what works for you.
But from a strictly crunching standpoint, the 860 would be better as it has HT. (which is a significant boost in WCG - not for all apps but here it is.)
I tend to always go bigger... but that's just me.
No he isn't kidding ? If you go to the link in post #73 of this thread you will see there are only 4 users (I.D. 11941 XtremmeSystems). Using the link you posted there are many more users (I.D. 8674 XtremeSystems).
Not sure if someone is trying to mess around with XS or why there are two Communities with close to the same name. I'm going to assume us XS members should be using I.D. 8674 ?
Would someone please modify the post #73, we need to ensure we are all on the same page for this to work.
Running at 100% for a few hours sure is a good way to find out that your Rad is dirty :(
Have to quite smoking and soon as it really makes cleaning a top loaded rad a pain!
John
I shall contribute in a day or so with my I7 and another comp. Can't have my I7 running when I am sleeping though because of the heat :'(
I don't know what that other team is, but it isn't this one. It might have been a misspelling or something or ... who knows. This team has WAY more than 5 members, that's for sure.
Calling:
d1s0rd3r

You have joined the wrong team.
The one you wanted is here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/te...mId=69B8364XP1
It looks like someone did something funny (possibly by mistake) in May '09 and started a team one letter different to this one. It also looks like they have abandoned it themselves.
Thank you.
Clearly I'd be letting the team down by cheaping out with the 750 then.
Can't have that so 860 it is. :)
Aye!Quote:
I tend to always go bigger... but that's just me.
__
I'll let the old 754 Venice crunch until I swap it out for the last time.
Been a yeoman box.
Be interesting (to me anyway) to see the difference in raw computational power.
I can't help but think it'll be substantial.
Correct team, yes?
Joined WCG today after getting Movieman's email.
My first time crunching for WCG. I've done some for F@H in the past.
Everything installed fine using Boinc Manager 6.10.43 and my i7-860 is crunching away right now @100%. I got this quad cheap as a member of Intel Retail Edge and thought I'd put it to some good use. I won an i7 HP laptop from IRE too and I'll hook that up soon to crunch too.
The only thing was, I had to figure out how to join the XS team. Maybe that's something that could be explained in the OP for the more dumb noobs like me. :D
Joined the Team and the Cause :)
I am having issues with Setting up stats trackers though. I have followed the guides and I still get a blank signature. I have CPID and I have entered it into Free-DC and entered Team Name and I still get nothing. I'm either a total noob or this thing just doesn't like me.
Joined in today.. I have a couple of computers crunching WCG fulltime already so I just switched them over :)
this program will compare to F@H?
Got the email and joined straight away. Great idea, great concept. Wish I got involved sooner. Got the sig rig crunchin away already, also got a q9400 @ 3.2 that will come online tomorrow. Plus any other damn PC I can get my grubby lil hands on will be joining the cause aswell, I promise you that :yepp:
Hi Guys,
quick question; is the 'Total Credit' on the Free-DC stats page the same as the 'Accumulated Points' on the WCG site?
thanks, Ed.
:welcome:
No. WCG started with another program manger before going with Boinc. The difference is 7 x. WCG site shows 7x what Free-DC and other sites show. The stat sites like Free-DC show Boinc points.
@mezcal Yes :up:
@black_evo anytime I have mad a change to my sig stats it takes 30 mins to an hour to show up.
:welcome: everyone. Thanks for helping!
Ahh right, thanks, I'd better stop waiting for those 6k points to drop and find some more PCs to hijack then...
ok my cooling is the coolermaster v8 100%load 67c max on core 1 the other tree cores are between 58-61 cores 2-3-4
cpu voltage is 1.18v now trying 1.2v bios
memory corsair xms3 1600mhz@1480 all auto but voltage @1.66
qpi 1.33v
ioh core 1.2
asus gtx 285 1gb
im also using a coolermaster haf 932 case
and a coolermaster silent pro 850 watt psu
I am having a few problems.I am not sure what the deal is! I like to join the team, but for some reason my pc will not let me.I was hoping by now someone would of sent me a private message to help me!So I would not sound like a fruit in General chat here. And member belittle me!But I think this is why I quit this Forum before!
But anyway. When I log in to World Community Grid it will not let me join a team, its like the page keep refreshing its self. And I have hit Compatibility view.As well it will not let me see World Community Grid forums unless I log out. I am not done yet complaning here! I like to give 100% of my CPU, it will not let me change the settings. When I change the setting and save it give me a error occurred because you have submitted the page more than once. And I never submitted anything! I tryed going to their forum to post for help, but as I said it will not let! Any help please send me a message!
Haha, checked my temps this morning to see how my i7 was doing at 100% for 24 hours...good news is, I know it is stable, bad news is, I think I need to update my cooling! Was sitting at 71 degrees  LOL. That should be fine though, right? Or should I drop the CPU usage down a bit?
Anyway, I got another computer up and running so that makes an i7 and 3x E8200 systems going 24/7. I have 1 more PC here in the office that I will put it on today and then 1 at home and maybe a laptop.
Also, quick question, I have been running it now for 24 hours exactly and I have returned 10,570 points....that sound rightish?
for what i have been toled you file with the temps some are going as high as 80c but i think that is hot hot hot mine is hitting 66c with the coolermaster v8 if you have extra money its best to upgrade the cooler if your worried
but 70 is the max for me
im a newbe at this so cant help with the score i have the gigabite ud5 mobo and i have my i7@3.7ghz but it bsod after about 6hours of doing this but i have uped the voltage of the cpu and im giving it another try
i love testing stability this way at least your using the g-fopps for good use unlike prime and intel burn test which you get no benifit from it :)
Joined the Team for the cause.
Thanks for the e-mail and I am crunching with the rig in my sig as of yesterday afternoon. I will most likely add my daughters q6600 in the mix as well. My registered user Id is sRHunt3r.
71 is not hot for the i7-9xx series. Now I'm not suggesting that you go much over 80 in general but I have a rig running 24/7 for 13 months between 73-83 (depends on ambient temps, cost of AC during the summer and what OC I want to play with) and it is still running strong with no sign of degredation.
im only getting 110pt/hr only my setup :(
Wait a few days. Your hourly point production will improve as your work units are validated.
Each completed work unit that's sent back to WCG has to be validated. In a nutshell, at least one identical work unit is sent out to another computer. Until that other work unit is completed and sent back, yours can't be validated. That can take anywhere from 1-7 days.
The reason it's done this way is because scientists like redundancy. They will often perform the same experiment more than once just to make sure the first result was no fluke.
is it normal to be working on 4 items at once? is it better to just work on 1 at a time?
Have a spare i7 920 barely being used just signed up(Generious) I will leave her run :)
Yes, it's normal. If you have a quad core with four threads, your PC will process four work units at a time. If you have a quad core with eight threads, it will process eight work units. More cores means more work processed in a given amount of time.
The downside is that your CPU will be working at 100% load. So good cooling is a must.
If you don't want to run at full load, just go into the BOINC Manager. Advanced ---> Preferences. Change the processor value from 100% to whatever you want.
thanks for the quick answers!
cooling hasnt been a problem... im actually quite surprised how cool shes running at the moment (all cores around 47~49*).
WCG will not stress your CPU as much as Prime. But during the summer months, you'll notice your room is a lot warmer.:D
Running BOinc x64 beta and noticed that my messages are not updating, anyone else have the same problem? Online I can see that work has been completed from this machine.
Looking at my other systems messges/log (32 bit ver. of BOINC) and see numerous updates, tells when files completed. uploaded etc.
On another note I'm VERY impressed with how well BOINC Manager handles multitasking using the x64 version. I've got it set to use 100% CPU and eight threads, which it is using all the time and can still do my daily work without really noticing any negative impacts. Sure it slows down the BOINC's crunching somewhat but the big thing is I can still run multiple tasks without noticing a slow down on the primary app !!
Makes me happy to be helping out without any negatives to my computing experience!
John
On the BOINC Manager, go to the Projects tab and hit Update. You should see a message appear under the Message tab. It should say something like "Sending scheduler request". Whatever you do, don't hit "Reset project". That will flush out all your cached work units.
probably a silly question but i noticed the granted credit for the validated work
is not matching the requested.
for example i completed one overnight and this is what's showing
44.1 / 41.1
then another one this evening
45.4 / 41.4
is this normal ??
Yes, that's normal. WCG uses a quorum system. The same work unit is usually sent out to at least two computers. When the work units are completed and sent back, they are analyzed by a special validation program. If the two results are similar, you get credit that's an average of the two.
In some cases, your granted credit will actually be higher than the claimed credit.
This post explains it a little better.
Thank you for the quick response, and yeah, that post definitely made things clearer
Added my daughters q6600 to the cause, I'll work on the wife's later tonight ;)
Thanks, didn't appear to update. Then noticed that the x64 Beta version is sorting the log in reverse order, i.e. oldest at the top.
There doesn't appear to be a sort function built in so the newest entries are at the top of the log.
Guess that's why it's a Beta.
24 hrs. at 100% load, running all kinds of other apps concurrently and she's purring like a kitten :)
John
In two days I am building a quad core 8gig rig with 2 WD Raptors I will dedicate to your cause. This should be interesting.
I'm all set up. got my I7 (stock 920) running 8 tasks at a time at 100 percent for WCG and my 4870x2 ( OC gpu: 750MHz mem: 900MHz temp: 50-58C using both GPUs) for the milky way. only two projects will use my graphics card :(. Then got another comp running thats on 24/7.
Can't join the team on milky way. My name is the same as my user name is on here.
Oh yea I finally got some results and points, with just over 24 hrs of run time.
Points Generated (Rank) 6,179 (#379,454)
Results Returned (Rank) 9 (#413,096)
Don't really understand the second stat.?
John
WCG does not use GPU power, just CPU right now. That may eventually change. There are other projects like F@H and GPUGrid that use GPU power. Some people here use CPU power for WCG and the GPU for other projects.
I joined the milkyway@home http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/ as well, so I could use my GPU. GPU is under activity and also advanced > Preferences > Proccessor usage
So hope this is stable now? Sorry didn't have time today to check back and keep up with the forum...
Yeah, I can vouch that temps are good. I have a i7 920 that's been in the mid to upper 80s for over a year (one month was even in the low 90s) so I don't think you have much to worry about on that front... 70s are absolutely safe.
(80s are fine, but I don't like 90s... It's all on what you're comfortable with)
Second that.
Will the software act as a server in any way on my machine? Just Manchester Uni's Hornet network in the UK that is currently my ISP (Halls of residence) does not allow anything that is acting as a server on the PC.
Yep, nothing server like stuff, more like client.
How many new members have joined the last couple of days, do you know?
I'm crunching now with 12 cores @ 4GHz and have got 30k in the last 40 hours, is that what I should expect?
It's funny you should ask. I just took a look at the numbers a minute ago. 231 new members over the past couple of days. Our team membership has increased 18.7%.
Total current members = 1,465
We're now the 20th largest team
Largest team is Decrypthon (France) with 17,482 current members. Despite their size, we produce more points per day.
Second largest team is Team 2ch (Japan) with 11,822 current members. They are the current powerhouse. They generate more than 20 million points/day.
Nice, but still we need more right?
What about the score I've got is it where it should be?
How many machines do you have crunching?
It's hard to gauge your productivity after just a day or two. You'll usually begin to see your real daily average by the third day.
We could always use more members.:) The real key is getting people to crunch on a daily basis. Less than 30% of our team generates points on a daily basis. If 50% of the team crunched daily, our numbers would skyrocket. And we don't necessarily need individual team members to produce big numbers every day (though big point producers are always welcome:D). If 500 members generated 2,000 WCG points each on a daily basis, that's a million points.
Just to put it into perspective, a single quad-core will generate between 15,000 and 20,000 points/day, depending on the overclock. A quad core with eight threads (i7-920, i7-930), will generate between 25,000 and 30,000. An overclocked hexa-core (i7-980X) will get 40,000-50,000.
well i've just joined but it will take a couple of days for me to get started.
this weekend i'll have some time to set this all up.
a quick question does memory help out a lot?right now im only running 4gigs
in my i7-920 rig, going to be getting triple channel kit soon.
Questions.
When I first signed up for WCG I also signed up to BOINCstats.
Today I checked BOINCstats and it shows nothing even though WCG stats are updating. Then I tried to join XtremeSystems in BOINCstats and get the error "no response from project".
So I go into BOINC manager and tell it to sync with BOINCStats BAM. Next thing I know BOINC manager has stopped? Try and update and the program crashes :(
What did I do? Why are stats not showing up on BAM? How do I get my stats in BAM, if I do a search for my name I find some else in Sweden has the same name? Why can't I join XtremeSystems in BOINCstats? What is the value of using BAM ?
Sorry for all the question but inquiring minds need to know.
John
great to hear.i'll install the software soon and start crunching so can get a handle
on how this works and be ready to crunch the first week of may at full power
There are numerous BOINC stats sites. But they don't all show updated stats at the same time. This morning I had to go to the Free-DC site to get numbers for the newer members.
This is your page at Free-DC:
http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?p...cg&name=681494
Free-DC is not always the site to show updated numbers first.
I'm not sure how to fix the BOINCStats BAM. I've never seen that problem before.
I've never tried to sync the BOINC Manager with BAM, so I don't know. Perhaps someone else can chime in.
One thing you could try. On the BOINC Manager, go to Advanced, then Preferences. Hit the button in the upper right that says "Clear". The manager will default back to the web-based preferences you chose at the WCG site. If you want to run at 100% load, just make that's indicated in the Device Profile section.
Obviously I don't have a clue :(
Before I was able to Clear BOINC Manager shutdown by itself down this time?
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...01-30-53PM.jpg
I'm going to BOINC stats to shut it down until I figure out what I'm doing.
Thanks for the help.
John
I think you can just disconnect from BAM from inside BOINC manager. I think all it really does is help you control what the machine is crunching remotely. Seeing as we are the "set it up and let it run" types, I have never found the need for it.
Apologies in advance if I'm posting in the wrong thread...... followed mm's announcement here. I'm in with 6 to 12 cores for the May Super Computer push, depending on the weather, distributed heating I like, cooling it not so much.
Hey Rick I see you still have your head :D
Well guys been a while since I have been on the forums. I have joined and installed WCG software, now will add BOINC Manager. Currently running it on wifes dual core X2 550 at 3.5 w 4gb DDR2. Plan to install to my PH II 955 running at 3.7 w 8gb DDR3
I just built a system out of spare parts last night and added it to the cause
(AMD Athlon 64 3400+ / 2gb ddr) nothing extraordinary but i figured it could help a bit
Excuse me guys, just had to do a little thread cleaning and remove some garbage..
Thanks for this post. I've read that anything up to 90C is fine for i7, but wanted to check - and behold, the answer :D I've just OCed that i7 920 that was sitting turned off before I joined WCG couple of days ago. I've just blindly set the BCLK from 133 to 166 and it all works.. Prime after ~1h has it around 89-90C, no errors.. hopefully all fine. WCG keeps it at low 78-84C as much as I caught so far.. Btw, measuring with RealTemp.exe, v3.4, hope it reads these CPUs well enough..
LOL! That's why I went to "top list" of teams, and joined one listed there.. ;) I thought "they're here, can't be wrong team" :D And it isn't ;)
Just wanted to say that! I've been watching videos, browsing, doing some office-level work.. nothing hard.. But it never flinched. If I didn't look at Task manager I wouldn't even know it's running. Oh, and not having to turn on any heating last few days ;D But really, app is great in that respect, I can actually have it on and running 100% all the time, and not think "oh, got to turn it off so I can run this FullHD video or it will stutter".. no way! Real smooth! That's on my "home" E4400 CPU, nothing fancy btw..
I do have one question, at whoever knows the answer. Except by BSOD-ing, is there any way to know if perhaps CPU is giving out errors? I'm not concerned with my E4400, it's been OCed few years, and never had troubles with it, as long as I stay at/under 3.2GHz. But I've just OCed that i7 920 to 3.33, it's got stock cooler, running in those mid-low 80s when running WCG, but I've had Prime running only ~1h at once, though had total of around 4 hours of 100% CPU so far under either Prime or WCG today, so far didn't notice anything. But since it's running WCG now, not Prime, I'd like to know if there are any ways to spot errors that do happen but don't crash application or OS. Prime is great there, throwing out errors and so on (at least it did years ago when I last used it).. but don't know about BOINC x64 client.. Any help is appreciated :)
Oh, and I didn't want to "waste" time on running Prime for longer time, I want to process those WCG packets :)
EDIT: Darn this i7 is precessing packets 5.5x faster than my C2D.. and that's before I've OCed it.. Gonna have to buy me one :P
Go out and get yourself a better HSF than stock and you will be able to get that bad boy up to 4.0 GHz in no time, rock solid stable too I bet.Quote:
Prime after ~1h has it around 89-90C
You can check for non-BSOD errors by going to the WCG website, login to your account and then change the Result Status filter.
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms...Time&pageNum=1
I'm having some errors coming out like this(about 15 all the same):
Result Name: ng727_ 00006_ 9--
<core_client_version>6.10.43</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
ERROR:: Exit at: .\dock_structure.cc line:401
</stderr_txt>
]]>
This means?
i got 4 of those errors too,
but noticed the cpu time on them was too short, still some credit was still given
Which version of BOINC are you guys using? And do the errors appears on a particular project or on all of the projects?
Errors can be caused by a number of things - unstable overclock, bad work units, Beta BOINC client with bugs, etc. The Human Proteome project has been known to cause errors.
