The EVGA 8800GTS had a similar plastic label on the cooler. I removed it without any damage to the card, cooler or label. As much as I try I still cannot understand why anyone would think a product would be considered for warranty returned in the condition this card was in.

I guess XFX wanted to use my heatsink fan on someone elses card. That's funny. I should have carefully cut out the screw holes so the next guy that would have received my fan would have never known. :ROTF:

Why doesn't xfx allow the OP to buy another hsf for like 5-10 and get the card back? not ideal but better then a new card -_- if the issue with the warrenty is in the heatsink... kinda like not allowing a car to have a tune up on warrenty because the cupholder broke

If it is their policy to not allow anyone to open a card to put an aftermarket cooling device on the card, then I broke that policy. If they do allow this, then the warranty should be honored.

Look, it is impossible to tell by the picture. It looks like it is only a :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed up sticker, but it would require further investigation.

I am not going to go with any side here, since only the involved people, who actually had access to the card, can tell if it was damaged by the user or not, and if that damage source is covered by the warranty or not.

Anyway, even if only the sticker was damaged, man, WTF were you doing with the card? Were you skateboarding on it? There is no way a "normal" person would :banana::banana::banana::banana: up the sticker like that just to get access to the screws.

Sticker (f.cked up, messsed, peeled or planed) is not the basic issue...

I say XFX should replace the card. the xfx guy said "because we cant use that cooler on any one elses card" so :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing what! that has nothing to do with it. If you took a loss from all the nvidia bullcrap in the last 6-8 months then just take your lifetime warranty off the site. a lifetime waranty is a lifetime warranty Vistiontek rma'd my card and it looked WAY worse than that! and they have a REAL lifetime warranty, boy im glad I bought from them and not the xfx 9800GX2 I was going to get, if you ask me this is bullcrap!

I would like to see pictures from XFX showing the water damage and physical damage (other than the destroyed sticker). It seems logical that to deny the warranty they would have to have this proof and supply it to the person who purchased the card.

no card that has been used will be returned in it factory condition or why would it be being rma'd!

Well, its good to know that other Manufactures will allow you to remove the label and not void the warranty. There is a thread on the EVGA forum talking about removing the label to help with cooling and to be able to put your own design on the card. The official EVGA position is that you can remove the Fan Art label but not the serial number label. With EVGA you don't even need to remove the label to disassemble the card anyway.

IDK about you guys but all my video cards that i haven't volt modded are in perfect brand new condition sitting in a protective metal box that we call a computer case.

You have draw the line somewhere with warranties and TBH the damage to the outside of the card is 100% indicative of how the user treated the card no matter what the user "says" he did with the card. (the thing did die!)

Evga isn't so hot either, here's a pic of the second $811 DOA brick they sent me exactly as evga packaged it.
:yepp: They just zip tied it to a box with no other support and one zip tie broke on it's 5 day journey across the states.
Another member here got 3 dead ones in a row, each a replacement for the one before.
It only took me 6 1/2 weeks and about 20 phone calls to get a full refund.

Took about 9+ weeks my EVGA M Board RMA, also told me "u play with water, eh?"
But i am happy much more then XFX victims :cool:

Here's another picture of the card. I tried getting part of the label off with some Goof Off but there is still a residue. You can easily see that the card is not damaged under the label but it is still a bit tacky. Someone mentioned that they thought they saw some damage next to the SLI connector, so I removed some of the label in that area also. Judge for yourself. Too much work to remove the whole label on a dead card. Someone on the EVGA forum said it took them an hour and a half. With the Goog Off the label remains just slowly melts away with some hard rubbing.

I'll be glad to answer any questions but I'm not going to get into any arguments as I've already been cited for trolling on this thread. It's a large picture but I think you can see better how the label is. I noticed on the card contacts that a little piece of label gunk got between two contacts. I thought maybe something was shorting here but it was just a piece of stickyness and it came out with a toothpick.

Try using acetone to remove the sticker. Take a picture of the front of the card as well. What type of shape is the rest of the card in?

Rubbing Alchol will work just as well.. my experience with XFX has been great. They sent me a free copy of COD4 and then i broke one of my screws on the back of my 8800 and they sent me a whole new set with no questions asked

I did an RMA with XFX and they treated me like "Gold" That is the reason I asked them to have a support section on XtremeSystems. I will definately buy XFX again.

I'm sorry your card wasn't replaced, but the way you butchered it, I wouldn't have replaced it either. :shakes: You need to learn some tricks of the trade if you expect to get an RMA after a mod gone bad. :up:

The XFX rep already said if you can just cut the stickerwith a knife where the screws were they wouldn't have any problem replacing the card.

Now however you removed it, I'm going to say, it looked as if you took it and rubbed it on concrete.

I think all brands have golden relations with some people...
That's not a bad way tho, kinda market strategy...

It looks as if the sticker is made of relatively thick paper with a clear plastic laminate over it.
When he pulled the plastic off, rather than the whole sticker, it took random areas of the paper substrate with it and only the surface in spots, giving it the "rubbed on concrete look".
It's like trying to pull tape or a shipping label off of a cardboard box. Sometimes it comes off easy leaving the surface intact and sometimes it takes the top layer of cardboard.
I don't see damage on anything other than the sticker and IMO, a sticker should not stop an rma under any circumstance.

No, don't waste your time sending it back. They put this type label on for a reason and the reason is so they can deny warranty if you disassemble your card.

I know there are a lot of XFX fanboys and XFX is probably a good company to do business with for non modders. I just would recommend that anyone who plans to mod their card with a waterblock look elsewhere.

Anyway if you shorted the card by installing an EK waterblock, as I did, who should be responsible? I think EK should bear some of the responsibility. Others on this forum think that the burden should be entirely on the enduser. I just haven't seen any other waterblocks killing card except for EK.

I really don't think warping the card is what kills it.
Something about the EK design that causes a short IMO. If you use the EK again I would recommend using nylon washers and standoffs.-

mate i have 2 of this xfx 280gtx, luckily one of my card sticker was not damaged when i removed it, but the other card(the one i posted) was not lucky enough, i did the same procedure, but it is really hard to take off the sticker without ripping it off, using a heat blower is useless because it would make the sticker adhesive more sticky

my question is, damaging the sticker or not after modding it, will xfx accept the warranty?
actually its only a sticker as you can see on my previous post.

A picture like this can show nothing of any carelessness, you must be joking. I'm not accusing you of being lazy, but I don't think you know how to take off the sticker properly. Don't bother with a heat gun, use a very sharp blade, works every time, Just make it look nice. XFX wont take it without the sticker because thats how they identify it and issue a replacement. It's the same as erasing the serial number off a dollar bill, no bank will accept it without the serial numbers. This is the same.

step 1. send my 1 card with an unbroken sticker
step 2. wait till it comes back fixed (hopefully they will honor the warranty)
step 3. removed the sticker "carefully" again on the RMA'd card (hopefully)
step 4. stick the sticker on my other card (with the broken sticker)
step5 . send it for RMA

and there you go ...

but still my question was not yet clear

will XFX honor my card warranty after removing the sticker (damaged or not)??

well i will say xfx warranty is great... i had both of my 8800gts 512's die within 1 day... i believe one got hurt... which in turn hurt the mobo and i wasnt aware... and when i swapped them to test killed teh second card....

i called and between i believe it was daniel and bryan.... they let me drop them off... (i live like 5-10 min away) and they called me next within a day or 2 and had cards for me to pick up...

i believe everyone deserves a reasonable expectation of warranty.... but when your card looks like you took a bench grinder to it... i say that the supplier XFX has a reasonable expectation of you the customer to return a card that resembles a card that you got....

nope i didnt use a heat gun or a hair dryer....i just pull it off just like my other card, my other card sticker was nicely done when i took it off, thats why i sent it already for RMA..the thick plastic that holds the xfx drawing will not go as you pull it off because its to sticky, scrapping it with a sharp blade will do the same..maybe im wrong though... i will try it when they return my other card...and i was hesistant to use a heat gun because it might damage those resistors behind the backplate cover

well they can replace or return my card without the backplate sticker...i dont mind as long as it will work fine...:)

how about this..

ill send my 2nd card with a clean backplate without a sticker? and return it to me working properly without the sticker...

The Fanboys arrive. You can say what you want but its obvious why XFX put the sticker on covering the holes. Is there another card supplier that does this, if so I would like to know who they are so I can avoid them.

The XFX rep said it was OK to cut around the holes after the fact and probably because they felt they might lose some customers. Snipedog has been trying to discredit whatever I've said and I don't really know why or what his agenda is.

I just don't see the point of buying from XFX when there are several other card manufacturers that don't make it impossible to take the card apart and put it back together without some kind of obvious damage. Nobody here is refuting what I am saying. The only argument they have is to look at the picture of my card, that I scraped it on the street etc. etc.
The only thing I did was peel the label off. I posted more pictures and it is obvious that the only damage to the card is the label. The reason XFX denies warranty is that their supplier will not let them send the card back for credit with any damage to the card. In other words, any broken cards are returned to their supplier for replacement or credit. This is what I was told by XFX.

Dude, you destroyed your card, my only agenda is that IMO you have no claim to an RMA with any company. With what you did to your card you need to file an insurance claim instead.

zoz, send your card in and see what happens, you never know. XFX might try to save face by accepting your card if you are lucky. Many here in the past have seen the pictures of my card and are aware that all I did was to peel off my label. I'm not worried about the warranty denial for my card.

My point is that XFX puts this kind of label on to begin with covering the screw holes. Noone here can explain why they do this but it is quite obvious. Everyone just yells Troll. That's a great argument and comeback. I've posted other pictures here of my card after I got it back from XFX and it is easily seen by anyone that really looks that there was no damage to my card other than the label. After I got the card back I posted this picture showing no damage except for the label.

Now while I agree with XFX that card looks so :banana::banana::banana::banana:e I wouldn't want that handed to me. After reading through the thread it seems it's just damage to the rear sticker. Now maybe I'm being silly here but surely the sticker can be replaced? It'd be understandable if it was a warranty void sticker.

That's right, it's just a sticker and that's xfx's whole business, it's what the do, they buy it from nvidia and put an xfx sticker on it.

As long as the sticker doesn't include the serial number, it should not affect the waranty.

dont you guys see the damage beyond the sticker... look at the pic i posted.... it seriously looks like he ravaged the case of the card also.... it is in very poor condition.... i can personally guarantee you that xfx would warranty your card zoz, as i have dealt with them....

you can do anything to the sticker and thats not the issue... its what WAXKING did to the case taht was the problem it was in a major state of disrepair

btw xfx put those stickers on there for the visual appeal. they cover up the screws because for teh vast majority that dont mod the card... it looks nice

The only damage in your picture is to the paper substrate of the sticker when he pulled the plastic laminant off.

If there is any other damage, could you please point it out.

I don't see that much damage, except for that pic where it says damaged pcb, but it just looks scratched to me. Like you said the stickers are there for "visual appeal". They also stop you from accessing the screws but shouldn't prevent an rma. Leaving the stickers on in that state makes it seem to look more damaged than if the thing was cleaned up.

I'm talking about the OP's card mainly.

zoz's cards do look a bit better off.

I think your guess is exactly right and that the EK WB shorted the board. What you have circled is a piece of the label that I rubbed off with some goofoff after I got the card back. I never noticed it until after the picture was posted. I think I mentioned this somewhere in this thread already. If you don't believe it I still have the card and can take another picture and post it. Can't see that it really matters though.

My whole point on this thread is not to argue about whether or not that XFX should honor the warranty(it was denied a long time ago), but to make people aware of the sticker. If you plan to mod, why buy a card with a sticker like this that must be damaged to disassemble the card? Please, anyone, tell me why you would buy this card if you intended to install a waterblock? I would never have purchased the XFX card if I had know about their sticker.

at the least you will have to cut the sticker... to get to the screws... but even if you remove it in a reasonable fashion they will rma it

Cutting around the screws, using a heatgun, using a razor, either way if you RMA it it isn't in its "original state" so the XFX rep is just saying a bunch of BS. And as for the card being wet, even if it was soaked when put in the box it would still have dried out by the time it got to XFX (even if shipping took 1 day). 'Grats XFX, you are now on the same list as Sapphire for customer support :up:

It's rather simple, you tamper with the stuff you void your warranty.
If they then still honour it, lucky you, but they have zero obligation to do so.

That's irrelevant. What the XFX rep says after the effect is irrelevant. Is it written in their policy that one must cut around the screws? No.

XFX do state you can change the fan but state the card must return it it's original condition.

XFX made it impossible to return in it's original condition due to a sticker which one needs to remove or cut out in order to change the fan.

Legally speaking, the OP has a case.

XFX is misleading it's users. Ask any lawyer (trust me ask any.. I should know). XFX is making it impossible to adhere to their own policy.

Now as for the card being damp. Well, unless it was rendered wet during shipping, that claim defies the laws of physics.

EDIT: I just want to add that I mean this with the utmost respect SNiiPe and this is based on my own legal knowledge. I have been lurking here for a long time and have nothing but the utmost respect for your person.

Now.. as for my conclusion. Don't buy XFX.

I can only imagine what sort of ridiculous run around I would be presented with by purchasing one of their ATi/AMD based cards. This is disgraceful.

And for how the sticker looks, ya it looks like crap but thats easily done tbh.
Some stickers are easily removed and u can pretty much remove them in 1 piece. But other stickers when u try to remove them immediatly rip and are damn hard to remove cause they are thin. And the harder u try the worse it looks. The flash light from the camera likely makes it look even worse.

But like said the card stil being damp at XFX is what confuses me.

edit: for shorting the card with the waterblock.
Done alot of GPU and full cover blocks but nvr damaged anything.
Once tho with an EK full cover block i slightly bend the card (copper touching the PCB).
The block came with 2 screws and i wasnt rly paying attention so used 1 of the screws in the wrong hole therefor bending the card. But noticed it when i checked the GPU for contact and took it apart and noticed i used the wrong screw.

I'll have second thoughts about buying from xfx next time, and I have bought from them before and they actually have been pretty nice to me.

But this can't be excused as I see it.

Ok, slap a new sticker on, shouldn't be more then like a few bucks? That shouldn't really be a reason to deny an RMA. Just make him pay for the sticker or new cover... Also, OP, I suggest you take aspire's advice about buying a new card if you can and swapping the stock coolers. If it can be done, do it although it sounds a little errr...... not..... legal?

Xfx shouldn't refuse an rma for the sticker. The card didn't have a sticker on it when xfx got it...they put the sticker on it, so they can just remove what's left of the sticker and send it back to nvidia for credit.

It wouldn't be easy for XFX to pull the sticker or the remains of the sticker. How do you know that XFX doesn't receive the cards with the stickers on already?

Water never touched my card and the card was never wet, even after I got it back. Also nothing was scratched on the card including the screws which were covered with the sticky gluey remains of the label.

I could care less about this card anymore, but I like keeping other modders informed so that they don't get surprised by this sticker like I did. As I have already said many times in this thread, do not buy an XFX card if you ever plan to do any mods.

I work in a company that distributes computer parts, all RMA goes through my hands, i've seen it all.
Card/boards/PSU with bits that look like someone put a hammer and a saw to it, or dripping with coolant. And more than often from people in suits with "Manager" or "Executive" in their titles.

As soon as you even loosen a screw the card is no longer in it's original state. I'm sure that little line is there for a reason. These companies are in business to make money, and I'm sure it's not easy for them to figure out who has a legitimate claim and who doesn't. You take a chance every time you mod hardware. Right on bro! Evga has always been good to me. I swear by their 680i A1 boards with the pencil mod :) They upgraded me from an AR release for 15 dollars cross shipped. I used to get 13k 3dmark 06 on that board with an e6600 and 8800 gts 640, wooot. Take care.

Well even though I just bought a 750I FTW from EVGA recently and it came DOA and i sent it in from RMA and they gave me BS saying I bent the CPU pins and it was gonna cost me $60 to fufill the RMA, I still dont think im gonna sway away from them and think about buying XFX. For me, its either BFG or EVGA when it comes to vga's. EVGA worked with me and cut the price in half down to $30 and my fresh board is on the way, so hopefully things will be well. Even though I didnt bend the pins, I took extra precation with the board when i intially tested it, if they were bent, it came bent or got bent in shipping to them, but still.

Either way though, the way you sent the card in, did you expect a RMA?

I really didn't know and I figured it was worth a shot(it only costs shipping). The card didn't look near as bad as the picture made it look and except for the messed up sticker on one side, it was in new condition.

I didn't know they were sending RMA cards back to the factory for credit at the time, and a dead card is dead, sticker or no sticker(worthless).

What really bothered me was them lying to me about the card being water damaged, and next they told me they couldn't return it to the factory for credit with the sticker damage.

NEVER AGAIN DO I BUY XFX!! DONT BUY XFX!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

I was in total 6 MONTHS without a graphics card!!!! It took me 2 months to even get an RMA number then after annother 2 months I got ANNOTHER faulty card and was told the only thing I can do is start the whole process again with annother RMA!

Come on XFX your making alot of enthusiasts very unhappy, at the end of the day people who buy your cards are gonna be enthusists and this can be expected, deying rma on the grounds of a few scratchd screws and a stiker is a little harsh, if evga could do it why can't you, you will lose out on much custom as its enthusiasts who will buy your cards and news travels fast, I have heard simlar stories many times!!!!!!
