Pity..I think my old 8600GT is 'kapootz'...otherwise it would be folding. :( Maybe I will get lucky and the winter challenge will be for 8800GS'.. hehe'
Good luck to those involved..and good modding.
I'm in if I come across a card but the prices up here in canada are just not good right now for the 512/ddr2 cards.
What if we change from DDR2 to DDR3? Cards are more widely available and most of the time not that more expensive. There are more GDDR3 cards on ebay as well.
or allow both? Just separate results for each.
lol some company on ebay australia was just selling a refurbished 8600GT DDR3 so i snapped it up :D
We should do physx results while we're at it lol ;)
Why don't you show us how fast you can make those cards fold? Haven't seen someone try a subzero run to complete a wu
Serieus note, not feasable since the wu's differ from eachother. I haven't kept an eye on CUDA pi though, did anything come out of that already?
Havent seen it yet.
I think i've found a gem of a card though ;)
Ace then its GDDR3 for me a have a fine card waiting here anyway ;)
...and now the search starts all over again, lol
thankful we have finally decided GDDR3, cause then we won't have so many memory issues. Well.....not unless you make sure you get a good one :D
Got my eyes on a few different cards. Shall narrow it down to 1 by the end of today. Physx does sound like a good idea if we can get a realiable benchmark. Otherwise i am going to be concentrating on 3dmark03 again.

I reckon the best cards are those with 1G memory and an extra power supply connector. Galaxy has one, Asus as well.
Yeah, they are only sold in eastern europa and asia ... and probably already phased out. The Asus top card seems to be the right choice, although I think Zotac has a 1ns memory card as well.
if you go to Palits website and look up the 8600GT Sonic+ model its the basis for a number of rebadged cards, including the one I have. AFAIK they are all 1ns Qimonda. I've seen a 1ns Samsung based Asus (the TOP card version right?) and Zotac would seem likely but are again hard to pin down and I've seen some variation in their component choice. Pieter was the Asus card you saw with the PCI-E connector onboard also featuring 1ns memory?
I think the Asus TOP card (1008MHz memory) has 1ns memory, I'm not 100% sure, though.
Decided to go with the Asus EN8600GTTOP/HTDP/256. Hoping that 256mb of GDDR3 doesn't bottleneck me
It's always possible to participate ?
I've made my purchase - no giving the plot away Pieter ;)
I will try to have a 8600GT , i have the other pieces ;)
So i will try to join in
made my order just now.... should be here friday or monday!!
yea now i just need to get my phase unit in order.... so i can get this e8600 up to par.... cant wait to start modding these things.!!11!!oneone!!!! :D
The Zotac Gddr2 card was a good bet for faster memory I think
damn it WHERE IS ANDY :D
:D:D:D:D
I guess I'll play, I need to test my new 8600's anyway ;)
Well after much debate. i am going to order a ASUS 8600GT OC Gear, instead of the TOP. Just think i will go against the flow of TOP cards, and see how i fair :D
Was going to choose the Gainward 8600GT GLH, but the card costs nearly twice as much, and i wana go back to Ireland to see my girlfriend ASAP, lol. Decided i can wait a little longer though if it means im in this competiton!
Should be ready for action mid next week. Look forward to seeing everyones results!

I`m in:up: Missed out on the fun last time. Looking for a card now.
I'm definitely in! Time to look for a card...
Updated the roster. My card comes in on Monday, cannot wait to get started
I found a nice Zotac (for speed sake ... err time sake)
did some testing
got gaymoda ICs on my card
'01 >> 850MHz
'03 >> 800MHz
cries
core on air does 663MHz linked for '03 and 700MHz for '01
roughly around 54K and 21K on air
gotta get someone to help out with the mods will post high res images soon
Ironically, the last 2 days i have been working has been the only time we were completely out of stock of 8600GT's :p:
Hopefully there are some with hynix 2.5 or 2ns ram when we get them in :D
here is my card
Xpertvision 8600GT DDR3 256MB
let me know if you can help out with core and ram vmods please

nice PALiT:D - I am still trying t figure out which one -> if I go PALiT or get the Zotac I have been eyeing
@dinos22
RT9259Ahttp://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datashe...K/RT9259A.html
Measure resistance between PIN #4 and ground.
Resistance *20 = VR. Tune down for more voltage.:D
http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1582mi7.jpg
Pin 4 is the feedback pin for each of them. Measure resistance to ground and solder a VR ~20 times the resistance (set to max resistance first)
The left one is Vgpu and the right one is Vmem :D
Jup, vmodding is so simple. :D
FB to ground resistance *20 for VR. Start with max resistance.
Blah, Moonman beats me to it, i already opened the datasheet for RT9259! :yepp:
@Dino: Just measure the output voltage on the appropriate pin and you'll quickly know which regulator is the one you are looking for (Vgpu output voltage should be around ~ 1.2V, Vmem ~ 1.8-2V)
Just found the voltmods for the nVidia reference/Club3D 8500 & 8600GT:
http://www.oc-lab2.com/test.php?t=32&p=4
Just find all the phase controller chips and yes, it is typically the feedback pin. Works for anything controlled by a standard phase controller. Just jump on google and start plugging in numbers that are on top of the chips, eventually you find the data sheet
I tend to use *15 as it gives better control when you reach near the end of the VR.
let's go ppl
1st Sept is here
card wont be here for another day or two at least. Playing with my 8800GTS while I wait.
Apparently my card will here on Wednesday then all I need to do is setup a rig to run the damn thing :p: I know some *cough Dinos* will be running pretty high powered rigs and we can't be having advantages like that now can we :D
hehehe well we know how comes in storming in at the end with some monster mods/tweaks/benching :D
i loved your last all black insulation...if i didn't know better i'd of thought you were a New Zealander heheheh
Crap, i think i'll have to skip this one or join very late. I could get 8500GT but not 8600GT :/
My 8600gt will arrive this week but still no 9550 E0:shakes:
Well my card has been dispatched and should be with me tomorrow. Guess we will see if its good or bad. I betting it will have Qimonda memory. Be just my luck, lol.
Also probably gona need some help with the voltmods, but wana see if i can figure it out first, lol.
Where are the intial Results from everyone??? I wana see some numbers!
- Paul :D
glad to hear it!
I should be bringing up some stock results tomorrow. Have pulled my TJ09 motherboard tray out and made a open bed comp for the contest risen of the floor. Thinking some open window treament :p:
Was hoping to of had the system already in windows by now and got my quad at some good clocks and tiimings on my ram, but i got chatting to the Gf again. She will be off else where by wednesday so i can concentrate, haha.
3 days off work too. Perfect timing....don't ya think!? ;)
- Paul
I just need to wait a bit to get all my purchases shipped - PSU, P45 mobo, and the other little things... Oh and the new CPU pot and NB pot
Asus EN8600GT TOP just arrived :D Going to insulate up the EP45T-Extreme and do some quick testing at 6GHz
I have to withdraw from this round as I am now in between jobs :( ... I will be up for next round though as I could use every last penny that I really don't have to spend.
I hope that is ok with all of you. was looking forward to it - could use that extra $$ to get a tank of gas and go to interviews
hey, im in too :D.... i have 2 8600GT's idling in my desk waiting to be raped :D... hopefully none of them coldbugged, since i've tested other 8600GT and most of them coldbugged even on 0c LOL
K finally up and running with this card.. it's so damn weak it hurts. First two runs at 5500MHz just to get an idea of where to improve, memory untweaked and no LOD.
E8600, GA-EP45T-Extreme, Corsair 1800C7 Dominators, Asus 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 TOP edition, F1EE + LN2
No LOD is the way to go. I'm not going to be touching any quality settings this time around.
has anyone modded their cards
i did those read points and one was reading 1.63K and the other 0.328K
so that means i should be using 50K VR for 1.63K FB first and 10K resistor for the 0.328K FB
when i find out how much they dial down i can reduce it further
the other thing i am wonderin is how you guys find voltage read points? >>> It's a bit of a concern reducing resistance without knowing what is going on with the voltage....do i just poke around the board or what? any smarter way to check?
pretty much just poke around at more obvious points (near the VRM usually on a choke or mosfet) then find a cap that reads near or the same.
my old test with Asus 8600GT Top OC Gear ediition
card was pencil modded to arround 1.5v and cooled with 10c water
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/r...OC2/8600GT.jpg
OWO everyone got the top gt oc 5000 versions.
i could only got the most regular xfx 8600gt , i'm screwed:mad:
well ive modded mine and im at 1.48v hitting 891mhz core.....
have not worked on the memory, it was supposed to be samsung memory from the reviews i searched. but i got gaymondia... have not started to clock the memory....
also i got the asus 512mb silent and i am liking it..
edit: can you guys please post your memory voltages? mine are having trouble even getting passed 800.. might need to lower voltages instead...
I've been a bit distracted lately, I have 5 i-rams and am trying to tune them on ICH10R :D I think tomorrow I'll dedicate a few hours to the 8600GT and do the required volt-mods. Glad to hear 900MHz will be possible on air with "low" volts.
@Dino - just probe capacitor legs until something close to what you are looking for pops up. On these simpler cards it can be a bit more difficult since it's all single-phase but for the most part the larger PWM circuit(larger choke and capacitor/s) is the GPU.
Well been testing mine, and it is terrible in my eyes.
1.5v, and im going for a max of 700mhz core
1.66v earlier i was finishing at 775mhz
This is all on stock cooler, so maybe a bit lower temps will help. Card makes a crazy amount of electrical noise as well. Just think i got a real crap one, :shakes:
Memory is quimonda as well. 1ns stuff. 2.2v is getting me to 1150(2300)mhz. not too bad, but the core is just killing me. I tried 1.75v if i get my figure right, and i couldn't break 2,000 on the shaders!
meh. i`ll get back with some results soon
- Paul
Gah my card STILL hasn't arrived :( this is taking WAY too long
pre testing my Palit 8600GT Sonic+, 1ns DDR3 :D. got 770/1050 on default voltage :D, hopefully not coldbugged as my first 8600GT Sonic coldbug at 0c LOL
oh maaan
my card at stock won't go past 850 on RAM
So glad I got those 2GHz GDDR3 ICs  Might have some time today to mod my card, my life is so hectic :( JamesBong sounds promising though, maybe 1GHz on air?
yea i will do a few 1.6+v air runs just to see if 1ghz is possible on air... i just cant beleave the memory on these cards.. no joke i can barley get passed 740mhz on the memory even with 2.18v...:D:p:
memory circuit needs more/better regulation I think... same as the 8400's before.
has any one try'd adding more capacitors??? may help
btw my card runns 850 mem at 1.9v, i belive i have samsung 1.2ns
card is a pny overclocked version, nvidia reverence designed
Please add me to the Contestants list:yepp:
WUHAHAHA My card arrived this morning :D
Can we still enter this?
ive got an ASUS 8600GT TOP 256MB GDDR3, stock speed is 600/1000 hmm, looking fwd to test it, but also need to find out the vmod points...
What CPUs will you all be using? I am wondering if I stand a chance with a 3.6 Kentsfield.
Hey guys, in light of the 3D03 bug thread maybe we should look to changing from 3D03 to something else?
GOt another Card!Samsung POwa!
Please add me to the List!
Time to put a cat amongst the pigeons :D
Presenting the Gainward 8600GT GS GLH featuring a 8600GT die on a 8600GTS PCB ;)

1000MHz good to go!
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3...90largejq1.jpg
Quick bench run - no vmods, air cooled, badly setup system rig :p:
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5...k8600gtqp0.jpg
1140MHz on the memory & 7501MHz on the core, but that'll be going up shortly :D
do win need to post a setup foto?
@johnny
wow you guys sure did get the right mem... mine are 14s only rated to 700mhz.. and hate voltage =*(
1.4ns on my Asus Silent as well.
Add capacitors James... and put a power connector in that empty spot, our PCB's are every bit as capable as Johnny's there lol ;)
i have added 8 caps and noticed 0 increase in mhz... i have not added anything as to the power...
also what are u hitting on the memory?:p:
