I will check on the next run and let you know :)
thanks Clunk :) it just amazes me how DFI tapped Thermalright to do their sinks...maybe soon DFI would tap EK/Swiftech/D-Tek...? :D
Recenlty made the switch from the shipped BIOS (05/21) to the newer (06/09 Beta) and quickly realized big improvments, especially with 7-7-7 clocking as Eva2000 mentioned! It also fixed a new minor issues I was having when restarting the motherboard (if I shut down the motherboard and went back some time later to start up the board wouldn't post. I would have to either manually reset the board a handful of times or clear CMOS and start over). Now it starts right up with no issues what-so-ever which is great news! At the moment I'm having decent stability at 450Mhz x 8.0x with 7-7-7-21 1T. Granted the performance isn't great because I've got plenty more DRAM settings to tighten up but I'm happy to have made some progress over 05/21!

Can anyone confirm for me if there is any performance/stability issues if you use the yellow memory slots over the green? I ordered the new OCZ Flex II memory along with this board but won't be able to use those big heatsinks on the memory made for water-cooling, if I put them in the green slots and the Thermalright HR-05 northbridge cooler...I will have to use the yellow slots so if any of you guys could comment on how well those slots work with your memory, I'd appreciate it much. Thank You.
The yellow slots seem slightly better then the green. Those are the slots I used in the screenshot on the proceeding page.
Forgot to mention, has anyone tried sub-zero cooling with this mobo yet?
Yeah same here, yellow slots are fine and probably better from what most people say (people far more knowledgable than myself)!
Thanks Roger...I just took a look at the first page and after looking at the pics, realized that my memory's heatsinks would be in conflict with the Thermalright heatsink...for the longest, I've just popped my memory into the first slots...I guess it just became habbit after doing it for so long...I can't wait to play with this board tonight with regular air-cooling...then in a few weeks everything goes into a custom phase change system being built for me...should be a lot of fun with my 9770 that has been sitting in me bedroom unopened for 2 months now.
Here :)
the last run was just to see how high it would go with the 9.5 multi at 1:2. I was hoping to get to 500/2000 but i was just short of that at 488/1952.
Going to try with a lower multi and see what I can get :)
just bought this board and got some problems.
first the LED display C1 then after 5 seconds it changes to 01 and stays 01. How do i fix this?
im using stock bios with this board and im using Team Xtreme DDR3-1600.
I had similar issue when I first got the board as well. I ended up just clearing the CMOS a few times and then made sure I went through the entire BIOS making sure all my settings were very stable (just to get things up and running and to install Windows). Once I had the OS installed I went back into BIOS and started playing around a bit more. I don't know how much experience you have but there are many settings on the board which can cause your situation to happen. Plus make sure you have all the HDD/Sata settings correct so that it recognizes your HDD's. My manual is put away in the box right now but check yours and see if it lists the "01" setting, it migth help you get started. Again however in my case I just manually cleared the CMOS (using the two onboard PWR +RESET buttons) and it eventually booted up! Good luck.
Crap, didn't even think about that Praz but I bet your right! In my case I was able to initially boot because my modules default SPD is 9-9-9-24 but one of the first things I did was manually set timings to 7-7-7 on 05/21. That is when the fun began because at the time I had no idea that 05/21 had this problem? Good point!
i cant even change the spd since i cant go to bios. my monitor wont display anything. i tried 3870x2, 3870 and 7300gt but still nothing.
Need to borrow jhay's set of ram. :D
I think this might help, and they seem to be very cheap, much cheaper than buying a new stick of ram to get it working:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIOS-CHIP-ASUS...QQcmdZViewItem
thanks Praz!
Striker 2 Extreme is now retired (thank god) in the box and DFI X48 T3Rs mounted and booted up directly without a hickup, really looking forward to this mobo:-)
That's some excellent work Clunk! I hope when my phase system is completed, that you'll help me out with my 9770 and OCZ Flex II 8-8-8 kit on this mobo...I believe it's the same memory as the Platinum EB that you used but since it has better cooling, they released it with a tighter timing...I wonder if 2.1ghz would be possible with water cooling on the memory.
Thanks :)
Not sure about the memory yet, not managed to hit the rated speed with any stability yet, so can't comment there.
I just wish they would hurry up with a 500fsb+-enabled-non-alpha-publically-available-BIOS so I can move on with the review
@karl
Hows the Hotflashed BIOS chip? :D Hot flashing really comes in handy. hehehe Hope you enjoy your new toy.

Max FSB? Nice bench's
Thanks. Don't know about the FSB yet. Haven't even had any 1x2GB sticks in it. Testing a couple more 2x2GB sets then will find out what it can do with 8GB. After that will look at 1x2GB and max FSB. The BIOS is still being tuned also. Oskar is sending several alphas versions each say. The above screenshots were done with an official version.
Great work Praz, thanks for posting! I had to keep remembering that your running 2 x 2GB moduls, not 2x 1GB! With that said very impressive results! I'm curious about your "Read Delay Phase Adjust" settings. I've yet to play with them much and when I have I couldn't notice any significant benchmark results or stability results. Is there any chance you would share why you ended up changing all the "Channel 1" settings to "Enabled", was it for stability or performance? Also in the BIOS screenshots you posted it looks like you have "T2 Dispatch" setting set to Disabled, but in your BIOS Settings Code you have it listed as "Auto". For the results you have posted did you have the BIOS "T2 Dispatch" setting set to "Disabled" or "Auto". Thanks again Praz for your help! Like you I'm still working with 06/09, although I've tried a couple of the new Beta's released recently.
Fixed T2 Dispatch. With 2x2GB sticks it needs to be disabled. Depending on speed, both Enhance Data Transmitting and Enhance Addressing may also have to be set to Disabled. Everest shows a gain with tRD set at 8 1/2 compared to 9. The board can do a straight 8 but it requires quite a bit of increase to NB voltage to hold stability.

So, this board will not boot, out of the box, with the Corsair 1600C7DHX ? :(
I see. I would greatly appreciate for anyone that's using that ram to check the SPD ratings. It would suck to spend ~400EUR and just look at the damn box. :)
Ask Corsair what CAS value the ram will boot with.
Just sent them an email. Maybe DFI will address that issue though untill the 8th when i will probably buy the motherboard.
The issue is already addressed, The 06/09 and later BIOS' will boot regardless of ram used. But there are still some boards for sale with an older BIOS.
http://www.iamxtreme.net/andre/X48-T3R/15.JPG
is it just the x48 tr3 that has those thermalright heatsinks?
how about the x48 tr2?
I'm pretty sure both the T2R and T3R come with actual Thermalright heatsinks (and ability to add the HR NB block, even comes with mounting hardware to make the HR work)! I just ordered one myself and looking forward to getting it!
EDIT REASON: Idiot!
The heatsink assemblies are the same on the DDR2 and DDR3 UT boards.
ok cool so you get the hr 05 on the nb and the hr 05 that hangs out the case?
i wasn't sure because all the x48 tr2's look like this
http://www.sltech.com.au/shop/images...TX48-T2R_B.jpg
cheers guys!!!
ahhhhhk i get ya there are lt and ut variants.
edit: there are no Ut dfi x48's in Aus :(
Didn't Thermalright make the X48 LT NB heat sink also though?
I'm pretty sure i remember reading that in my owners booklets and stuff.
As far as I know, there is no UT variant of the T2R, so you have to live with that "minotaur" heatsink assembly. The T3R comes with a "hedgehog" style heatsink for the northbridge, you'd have to buy a HR-05 to put there if you wanted one, though if you had a TRUE120, you'd probably need an HR-05 SLI so it would fit.
Yes,there is UT T2R version and they are available at my place...
Really doubt that I have the only UT DDR2 board made.

What is the difference between X48 UT T3R and X48 UT T3RS ?
coz DFI loves you :D
anyway, just got my UT T2R
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...TX48-T2R02.jpg
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...PartyUTX48.jpg
hoping to have some free time soon...:(
I think the UT versions have a digital PWM while the LTs have an analogue one, but going on my track record with info I wouldn't quote me ;)
Nope,he asked about T3RS and T3R.Probably in number of SATA connector, that was difference with DK series and difference about UT and LT is only in cooling, nothing more
Told you my info was untrustworthy. Add to that the fact that I apparently can't read and you get to where my post was

is there a problem between this board and quad fire 3870x2? got 2 3870x2's running, but my lcd wont display anything on the pci-e 1 but the pci-e 3 works though.
Still no max FSB Praz?
Hey Guys!
*SUBSCRIBED!*
Mine will be here tomorrow hopefully. Does this come with just the cooler that sticks out the back of the case, or does it come with the large HR-05-like NB cooler as well? Newegg's picture only showed the rear heatsink.
Anyway, I'll be testing max FSB with the E8600 E0 I got today. Should be VERY exciting and I'll definitely post as soon as I can.
Still haven't seen anyone posting 550+ FSB with this, though.

Heatpipes done correctly.
Go DFI!
For sure. Compare board voltage to temperatures. I removed the finned upper portion of the NB heatsink and put a MCW30 on it.

Same here, have also a MCW30 on nb and the whole system is running very cool and stable. This is heaven compared to my last board Striker 2 Extreme:mad: Thanks again DFI:) Oh and Praz, almost forgot, you are doing a wonderful with your testing, i love it! A pleasure to follow your work mate.

I'm going to try to control my emotions here and just state facts, but it might be hard.
Let me start by saying I now remember why I swore I would never buy another DFI board. Actually before I even say that, I believe you guys are misrepresenting this board by showing it with the NB cooler - IT DOES NOT COME WITH IT. ONLY THE EXTERNAL ONE IS INCLUDED
Now, my complaints with this board, and there are many:
1) The extreme pain in the ass to install that stupid cooler outside of the case. It makes me think this board was never even meant to be in a case.
2) The clear CMOS jumper is RIGHT underneath the second graphics card. If you're going to use crossfire, then you won't be clearing your CMOS. To DFI: why do I have to pull out my second graphics card when Asus is kind enough to put a clear CMOS button on the back of the I/O shield?
3) More on the CMOS: I have never had to clear CMOS with my Asus Blitz Extreme. Not a single time. I can set the FSB to 700mhz, and it will still boot and default back to my original settings. Personally, I don't see what the joy in clearing CMOS every 30 seconds is and with DFI boards, you WILL be doing that.
4) I know how it's quite a controversial issue to have a windows-based flash utility, but why not give us the option? Apparently the BIOS that DFI ships with this board is useless, so, thanks for that. And thanks for not giving me a way to flash it to something semi-usable.
5) Overclocking: seems poor so far. On my Yorkfield on the Blitz, I can set 450x9 and go. No issues what-so-ever. Now I know the learning curve on this is WAY steeper, but come on...this is a joke.
What this comes down to is that I replaced a board I loved because of the promise of this latest and greatest and I wanted to give DFI a chance again. Now, I've spent $350, broken my case fan in the process or mounting this ridiculous heatsink outside of my case, and am 400mhz slower than I was on my beloved Asus Blitz Extreme.
I know you will all ask this question - why did I get this instead of I loved my other board so much? Quite simple: I'm a damn fool.

Your post needs a lot of proofreading. :p:
@NinjaZX6R...WOW...sorry to hear about all of your troubles. Thanks again for sharing your experiences. I found OPB's post on OCXtreme's website and was able to determine that the pictured HR-05-IFX does NOT come with the board. Like you I said I would be hesitant to do another DFI board again. Now...I'm not sure? I'm just looking for the best Intel X48 chipset to run a crossfire setup...decisions...decisions...
Ninja, 3 things:
1. Get a 1Gb USB flash stick, make it DOS bootable (look at google, various ways of doing it) and you're free to flash whichever bios you want, to whichever board you want, and beyond.
2. Do some research first (this is not meant to be offensive :) ). Honestly, DFI have put an actual beta board out this time again (they have done it before as well) but some guys are working real hard to get things better, and they're indeed getting better (then again, I'm still personally stuck at maximum 495 fsb and... yes, DDR3 660 mhz so far with this DFI :p)
3. You did a bad job selling the Blitz Extreme. Although not as good as the P5K3 Deluxe, still in top3 of the best DDR3 boards for real extreme 2D LN2 benching (with some mods of course).
BIOS flashing can be done by floppy, USB stick or in Windows 32Bit using WinFlash. If none of those options will do then the BIOS probably doesn't need to be flashed.
The few times I have a need to clear the CMOS I use either the Insert key or the onboard Reset + Power button method. Have to try awful hard to scramble the BIOS enough to have to use the CMOS Clear jumper.
Thanks guys, actually that helps a lot. Wasn't aware of that trick for the BIOS. Making slow but sure progress. I'm at 425x9 now with ddr3-1700 at 7-7-7. Will keep pushing.
Question: which slots am I supposed to be using for crossfire? I've read that 1&3 are for 16x + 16x. I'm in 1&2!
Edit: And I didn't sell the Blitz Extreme. It's in my "backup" computer with an E8400 :)

Got the latest BIOS and it's virtually identical. Can't get anywhere near 450fsb at any multiplier on this quad. Am I missing something? Does anyone have a picture of their bios settings, or are you guys all on Wolfdales?
-Collin-
Collin - There are some great resources for helping people get sorted with this board, there is a steep learning curve but many have worked very hard to help others to overcome this. Below are a few great links that might help you get started, not as much on quad clocking but the general info could help out? Sorry if you have already checked these out but they were very helpful to me, good luck man!
eva2000's Initial testing HERE
Clunk's Testing Info HERE
OCX Testing Info HERE
Than once you get it sorted and running strong at 450 x 9 you'll be the first to post testing results for quads on the X48-T3R, lol! In all seriousness I'm sure someone around here is going strong with a quad on this board but I haven't seem many?
Hate to say it, but this isn't a learning curve. It's more of an unfinished motherboard that I feel shouldn't have been released to the public.
Sorry guys, it's going back. I'm out. My 1 year old P35 board put it to shame in at least 10 different ways, and for half the price.
-Collin-
Unfortunately, i don't think you'll get close on FSB on DFI when compared to Asus for X38/X48 chipsets at least unless your cpu and board combo has a sweet spot of GTL/CPU VTT tweaking and you nail it on the head. But memory clocks/settings also play apart in max FSB ;) But DFI is working daily on bios improvements so who knows where it will end up
I tried my QX9650 L739A640 on DFI LT X38-T2R max fsb around 445-FSB http://i4memory.com/f80/qx9650-l739a...r-cooled-5669/ pluck it in Asus Blitz Formula and 3d benching at 480FSB http://i4memory.com/f54/qx9650-evga-...-formula-6304/.
Seems in general max FSB declines as the number PCI-E link width increases with quads heh
P45 > P35 > X48 > X38
I'm seriously considering sacrificing the 16x + 16x crossfire and going with a P45 for that reason my friend.
BTW, awesome job on your posts with this board. Same to Clunk. Thanks for helping out. Unfortunately, dual core FSB does me no good on this board. :(
-Collin-
If I use TR HR-05 does TR 120EX fit?
I'd go for an HR-05 Sli, that'd be guaranteed to fit. You'd either have to fit a standard HR-05 off centre on the NB heatsink, or bend it to be out of the way. Either way, I'm sure an HR-05 Sli would fit fine.
e: It will fit, of course, if you mount the true horizontally, and to have a fan blowing downwards when mounted in a normal case, I'm not sure you could get a fan inbetween a horizontally mounted true120 and an hr-05 to blow upwards.
Still best to go with an SLI version then I think.
Yeah, probably will go with HR SLI...tnx
Hey dudes, great work testing this nice little new toy.I'm a DFI lover as well, since the DFI LANPARTY NF2 ULTRA B days, and I'm building a new machine Q9450 based and would like the experts' opinion on this board combined with this quad beast.Do quads go up alright with this mobo?
So I hear,I was wondering if this motherboard helps going any further
