Meh, pr0n is over rated. I'd rather have the real thing. But it is better then strip joints.:D
It's just always been called coriander here, i used to get confused when i heard 'cilantro' mentioned on american tv and in movies, got me thinking 'er....wtf is that?' - thankfully, wikipedia saved the day once more :D

And yes it is food! it must be it makes my poo turn black :)
Holy crap this thread rules!!!
Keep it going!
Hey this ain't the WCG section! Can we keep it on topic? i.e. MORE FOOD :p: :D
I love this thread.
Somebody said they thought Jack In the Box was the best fast food chain. Here in the Midwest we have a great one called Culver's, famous for their "Butterburgers" (Bun is lightly buttered and toasted) and frozen custard. Well it's not exactly "fast food" as cooked to order, but quick and there's a drive through. The menu is pretty extensive and everything is high quality and super tasty. I'm a huge fan of the battered whitefish sandwich, either cod or walleye.
Butter Burger below...
Culver's is terrible, don't be mislead!
They have a few nice variety items, but I'm yet to find anything I like there... and I've eaten it a TON.
Any beer you have to chew is defiantly a food!! And whats up with those glasses? I see them everywhere and I even have a set.
Huh. Small world thats where I work. At the Sac FedEx station off Norwood. I don't make it to woodland often but I'll see if I can make it out there.
Heh, my buddy used to live off bell.
Best burgers ever

From Burgerville. If you're ever in Oregon, it's a must to eat at a Burgerville. :D (they also have locations in western Washington)
Look for this sign!

I'm going up to my folks place in Washington state...I'll have to take some pics of the dinner I'll be cooking...
Asparagus Salad with Frisee and Arugula tossed in a bacon vinaigrette
Seared Scallops with citrus beurre blanc and watercress souffle
Gotta love farmers markets.
When I go back to New York for spring break I'll snap a pic of some real pizza ;)

First person to guess which pizza place I'm talking about without googling it gets a prize)
Um, Ricky Ricardo!!!!
Here's my homemade cheesecake ( oh well! the very last piece of it :( )

How 'bout some baked chicken & potatoes with sauce ( I think it's called soy ) [ made of mayonnaise, ketchup & mustard ] :D
Homemade of course... oh I'm such a wonderful and talented cook :p:

That sauce looks ominously like the stuff they call 'burger sauce' over here...
And i forgot to take a picture, but i just had 4 stonking great lincolnshire sausages with gravy & mash :)
how can you guys eat so much?
a light salad or a yoghurt is dinner enough for me,
and a 6 inch sub when I'm pigging out :(
Take a look at my profile picture, then ask that question again in your own head :p
You forgot the chicken doner kebab meat ;)

funny and interesting. He also does some off the wall film reviews as well.
Can't quite compete with Mr Robinson and Holy Sheesh Kebab burger :) but here's my kebab pizza I did and originally posted on beyond3d.com

I also do a good conversion of the McDonalds Big Tasty. Buy 2 big tasty's and throw away the top bun on each and also most of the sauce and the lettuce. Now you have 2 bottom buns and 2 tasty's. Ram them together to make a new burger and put them in the microwave for 1 minute. I'd suggest Kai do same but using 4 :D .
I once tried making my own biscuit and gravyin the american style and although the biscuit was fine the gravy was a bit too stodgy I think, I have never eaten the real thing so it is was hard to judge. What the hell are grits ? Sound horrible!
Have to say in the UK we do not have as much choice of burger joints, what we do have do not do as many items and those items we do have are not as good. We have to make do.
I'd love to go to In-N-Out though and see what they taste like. I think half my fascination is the burgers sound like FSB : RAM ratio's, so you can have a 4:5 or a 3:2, 1:1 etc but of course they term it 2x2 etc. I wonder what the optimum ratio of cheese to burger is for an in-n-out? Is it a straight 4x4 or are you better going 4x2 or even 4x3?
That's a computer overclockers mentality, what permutation is best?

Andy - TMI, but for your information, actually i have a gut that can reduce anything to its component parts ;)
Think of it like a phase transition coil in a transporter system :p
Grits FTW.
Grits FTL:down:
Just some Asian delicacies.
Let me do the walkthrough, starting with the most begign.
The first picture is snake soup, which shouldn't gross anyone out because its relatively common in the western world.
The second picture is a delicacy. Look carefully. The meat is not roast duck. Its rodents. Roast rats. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
The third picture may raise a bit of ire. That's Fido being served up Thanksgiving style. The picture shows a Vietnamese woman, but the dish is found pretty much across Asia.
The fourth picture is a Thai gourmet fried appetizer platter. Clockwise, we have leeches, beetle bugs, c0ckroaches, lizards and worms.
The fifth picture is distinctly Chinese. Look carefully at the dish. Those are the remnants of a live monkey. Yes, its pretty gross.
no more buffet for me
Hey, everything tastes great with a little sweet and sour sauce. Everyone chooses between the three main different types of sauces, but nobody needs to know what meat they are consuming .. its all delicious anyway lol
it would have to be some awesome sauce, and now way at all to tell what kind of meat it is if it is not beef or chicken
Was that a mother :banana::banana::banana:ing dog.
EDIT: What the :banana::banana::banana::banana:?
It's all dead animals (except for the monkey brains).
Uh Huh.. Roast dog...
The chicken that fed you a while ago didn't commit suicide.
I personally have never eaten dog, nor do I care to.
However, this is an international forum, and tolerance and understanding for other cultures (rather than prejudice and hatred) is encouraged. May I remind you that the population of the "dog-eating" cultures outnumber the non-dog-eating cultures by more than a factor of two.
Not the kitties!!
All the good in the tread and then Ian decides to make us all puke... :p
Good job IanY!!! </sarcasm>
(j/k... :p:)
Aaaand to get us all back to something a little more on the normal side of things...
http://kai.robinson.free.fr/dropbox/Food/P1040126.jpg
Heinz cream of tomato soup with added smoked ham and some finely grated cheddar cheese....FROM CHEDDAR ITSELF! *look of awe* :D
So I guess it's just as morally acceptable to force cats and dogs to live in cramped squalor before you butcher them as it is for giant poultry plants here to marginalize their livestock into horrid living conditions? I see no fewer than 9 cats in that tiny cage, and somehow it's not cruel or unusual to them? Tolerance of other cultures is one thing, but accepting blatant animal cruelty is another. I'm not saying we're any better here with chickens, cattle and pigs, but come on...
For God's sake IanY! :D
Totally agree on that for all animals kept and transported for eating. It's like that meat recall in the USA where the cows could not even stand before being slaughtered. In the UK we transport some animals a long way in poor conditions etc etc etc.
I like meat but I think we all need to clean up our act on how we treat this "commodity" before it goes towards our wellbeing.
Getting back to food I think that cheese soup would be nice with some Stilton and friend onions as well. Perhaps a dash of lea and Perrins on top.
Regards
Andy
OK. The food in this link even grosses me out. Its equal opportunity, spread between Asian, European, African and Latin cultures lol
http://www.trifter.com/Practical-Tra...licacies.80712
OK. I must admit I have tried two of these foods. The "bird's nest soup" is positively delicious and an extreme delicacy in Chinese culture. I've also had Fugu fish, but I found it kind of bland and uninteresting, especially when eaten as sashimi.
Yeah.. as though you Europeans have a monopoly on good taste.... Cazu Marzu (maggot cheese)... calf's brain... escargot (snails)... foie gras (goose liver).. {ahem} shepherd's pie :sofa: black perigord truffles sniffed out by pigs who just sniffed their own poop and the farmer's can't tell the mushrooms from the poop.
Foie Gras is lovely....and whats wrong with shepherd pie? Its just minced beef/lamb with gravy, topped with mashed potato!
I loved my moms Shepherds Pie, some how she always managed to get the potatoes on top crispy.
That and my gf is good @ making it as well.
Foie gras and escargots are delicious. I wish I had some right now :D
Indeed and well put. But, boy, does this make me think "God Bless America" (well the whole western world but you get my point...)
I think I'll hug my dog when I get home.
We're definitely not and it's rather disturbing...but still. I just look at a dog differently than a chicken, or a cow. It's something more than a cultural thing...idk...
And as for rats I tangle with those disgusting, diseased beasts in my alley far too often. Served up on a plate? Hmm going vegan suddenly seems tolerable :)
My boarding school was vegetarian only, so no shepherds pie....but wednesday was eggs, beans and chips night...
I made Veggie Chili last week, then a Casserole the next night, tonight its meatloaf and mashed potatoes (hand sliced, boiled potatoes with some milk and butter whipped up with a little garlic, also with green beens (not the from a can kind either).
Just yesterday, I had filet de boeuf en croute à la périgourdine (that's black truffles on top of beef wellington in layman's terms). I had foie gras-roquefort napoleons with a frisee salad to start. I didn't have escargots yesterday, but I have eaten more than my fair share over almost five decades and it shows around my waistline.
Just to answer your question...
Beef Wellington is essentially a classic beef stew encrusted with puff pastry, a lot like an American classic chicken pot pie. The Brits (in higher society) take it ten steps further with the tenderloin wrapped in foie gras pate, typically served with asparagus. Otherwise, its a pretty common dish in the UK. They also have sausage Wellington or salmon Wellington, just not served in Buckingham Palace rofl
The French take it to a higher level though. Of course, its filet mignon, then butter puff pastry, bordeaux wine sauce and then black truffle shavings on top.
Sometimes, the Chinese take it way too far, with the same dish but with seafood around the plate rofl
it sounds appealing, but the visual here, (damn changed the pic lol), though I would give it a shot.
I will try almost any food once, so I can say if I like it or not.
It drives me nuts people that say "EWWW I DON"T LIKE THAT" and have never tasted it............to me it means they don't have a pallet to taste on (pardon the pun). Don't knock it till you try it, you might be surprised.
Though, being part german, may seem kind of ironic, but you won't catch me eating sauerkraut. Sorry, just doesn't agree with my taste buds.
Here is a pic of the French dish.
Yeah well............with in reason.
I heard a guy the other day talking about how he wanted to try brown roaches, and that other cultures eat them, and given the area I grew up in, and some of the houses I have been in when I used to clean out houses after people moved.....................
Sorry...............but those things do not bring the thought of edible and delicious to mind, very much quite the opposite.
Now, that is just ...................unhealthy lol.
I am 6'1 and 250 @ 38 waist.
6'3 and 275, 44" waist :D
5'11" 200 36" waist.
IanY we have a ton of great snails here in CA. Mostly I throw them in the air as high as I can towards the road. They are really gross when you are walking at night and step on one.
6'0 233lbs, 36" waist, rofl.
IanY do you want me to send you some?
Never heard of it being wrapped in Foie Gras - they dont even do that on Masterchef.
It's just a bloody great sausage roll if you ask me...
That's the way I learned in Culinary School, with Foie Gras pate and puff pastry wrapped around a tenderloin. The variations of it with black truffle and such aren't necessarily classic so much as delicious.
I hate it when people look at food and say "Eww, no way" or such, there are so many interesting things that you would miss out on if you took that frame of mind with food.
Although head cheese was a trip the first time I tried it, I'm glad I did. As I am glad with all the offal and more interesting food items I have tried. Not the biggest fan of escargot though, texture in some preparations leaves something to be desired.
You're quite the foodie, IanY...
Thank you, sir. I take that as quite a compliment coming from a chef.
Yes, I am quite a foodie, and my 37 inch waist shows it (5'9" and 190 lbs... you guys just wait till you get to my age rofl). Also, I'm a sucker for three star Michelin and up. When I get the chance, my money flies out to door to Eric Ripert, Alain Ducasse or Guy Savoy ;)
Having said that, I know how to stuff my face more than I know how to whip up haute cuisine, but I nevertheless cook as a hobby.
I like to go over to Europe and freak them out, knowing their food better than some of the locals.
I am by no means a chef. The term chef has kind of become diluted. Chef is the person who runs the kitchen, and in order to (imho) to take the term chef you must be at a exec. chef/sous chef position rather than cook. Similiar to calling a nurse a doctor.
Ha, haute cuisine is losing out against the battle of the bulge, most people are straying from rich foods. Thus the reason for beurre blanc/butter sauces and just simple demi/reduction sauces becoming more and more the norm at least in the states.
Sorry, I have never had escargots. I didn't know there was a difference. The snails in Minnesota are very small and here in California they are pretty big. I would try the monkey brains as I will pretty much try anything, but I don't think I could do it with it looking at me. I have had rattlesnake which was excelent! It tasted like a very tender pork loin.
So what is the difference between garden snails and the snails they use for escargots?
IT's not that they aren't edible, so much as probably not very good. The texture and flavor varies accordingly to the species of snail. The particular garden snail which you are referring to may be very tough in texture and whatnot, making it not the very best snail to consume. But if you would like to try it out, take them let the fast and purge their systems and the by all means be adventurous and cook them up with some garlic and white wine.
Here's a local pizza place called Fat Mike's.
Attachment 73037
I'm betting that after those, any man would be fat...not just guys named mike :D
Wow, I'm gonna go get some food after seeing that pizza.
Here's the infamous " reviewer's sandwich " that I 'consume' when writing reviews :D
That's the "fast 'n'... go" version, only: mayonnaise ( lots of it! :D ), tomatoes, ham, finnish edam cheese :D
http://i27.tinypic.com/wune9z.jpg
I'll counter that with an American Philadelphia Cheese Steak from South Philadelphia. You Europeans know Rocky Balboa, right? The first one is from Pat's King of Steaks and the second picture is from Rick's Steaks. The two restaurants are side by side, and you don't mention the other restaurant when you're in one of the restaurants... or you'll end up as fish food.. ;)
Anyone else like Toro ?
<this is not meant to gross anyone out, but this is my favorite food on earth, so far>
Toro comes from the belly of a Blue Fin tuna, or similarly huge tuna. Only the belly of tuna sashima is considered prime cut. It is highly recommended that the belly of any other fish be removed and thrown away. The belly of a fish is where most parasites are found and the fat is where most mercury is stored. Definitely not for pregnant women. Some restaurants sell toro for as much as $20 for a single piece.. each piece is the size of your pinkie finger. It melts in your mouth like a piece of heaven.
Um I think you mean Geno's that is opposite corner of Pats.
Never heard of a Ricks in the area, I have been there more times then I care to count.
Its a Philly thing, its in the water, in the blood.
I would try it, it might kill me, if the taste is justfied, to hell with it, I will die some day might as well be from something I love................eating:up:
I love Toro. At the restaurant where I work we will occasionally get requests to make it...and will often have extras...nothing like free food. Here I think it's going for about that much.
http://www.seasaw.net/
For what it's worth a great restaurant if anyone is in Arizona.
Pats is South of Geno's, talk about competition:up: :yepp:
