And why do they (and others too) continually keep naming the card ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 1GB while in fact it is a dual 512MB card and not a 1GB card, the name is HD 3870 X2.

They claim the new driver gives the exact same results -including the 'crysis artifacts'- as the previous one (with the glitches from before the feedback from all the test-previewers)... while i read on a trustworthy review (kill me, i don't remember which one (HWCanucks?) that the crysis artifacts and many more had been fixed in the latest drivers as a result of the feedback. And the Dutch testbed is a 780i board. Do they even know what they're doing i wonder. I think NO.

Easily man...

A LOT less latency than regular cross-fire.

You see, regular cross-fire has to do a majority of it's communication through the chipset. Meanwhile this card has it's own splitter and does it's communicating all on card. As such, there's less latency all the way across the board.

ALL current multi-gpu set-ups have to duplicate data for each gpu in ram. They have to, because both gpus need the same textures and shader information as they both work together to render the scene. Essentially they all run as if they had the same amount of ram as the lowest card does. That's just how things have to work currently, and why I believe the R700 will have to have an external memory controller for the MCM package. :up:

To sum it up, this card is like a lower latency CF set up.

So how would you explain similar results in 3dmark?

Im not saying that your theory is wrong it just doesnt seem logical. if it was running lower latency, then surely like i said before it wouldnt perform even close to what two singles in cf can score? [Im talking about stock speeds here.]

and as you see in someone else's post above the powercolor scores 23000. with a factory overclock.

Im just trying to understand your reasoning.

I see you seem to be confused... I'm going to break this down as best as I possibly can.

All current multi-gpu setups, be it multiple cards, or multiple gpus on a single card, all need to have the same information in each gpu's memory banks, essentially dropping the ram down to one gpu's ram size available.

Crossfire and this card have similar performance because they are practically the same thing, there's just less latency in communications with the 3870x2 compared to twin 3870's, and as such it gives the 3870x2 a bit of an edge over twin 3870's.

Both of them suffer the same issue, even though there's 1 gb of ram total, seeing as both gpus have 512mb of ram, and both need to store identical info in their 512mb, it's the same as only having 512mb.

So, if you were thinking Cross-Fired 3870's effective doubled the ram, you were mistaken... See why they're so much alike now? :up:

Unbornchild i saw Mascaras is on vista now I would like to see veryhigh settings not high I know it runs fine on high very high is a different story though on ati.

@Mascaras, What is your overall view of the Card so far? Im interested to know what you think about the 'actual' image quality from your own perspective, benchmarks are all well and good but imo user experience/assesment while being a personal thing is just as, if not more valid. To me anyway.

I believe, the 3870x2 I have shows better image quality than my 8800gtx did.

Sorry Maracas, but those CPUID temperatures look off. There should be the temperatures of TWO GPU cores reported and not only one. Due to one GPU contact plate being copper and one being aluminum, there will be differences in temperature between the two cores.

This card should be just a bit more expensive and it should launch in a few weeks, but we don’t expect any significant speed jumps with the new DDR4 card.

The point is, ATI can do it and the partners want it, so they will definitely follow up with the new refreshed card.

all AMD needs to do is write drivers for quad crossfire! I want to see if we can get 60fps in crysis with very high settings at decent resolutions like 1680*1050. They needs to hire more emplyees in the driver department. I'm sure even some people on this board are up to the task!

If you ran a 3870 x2 with a single HD 3870 how would crossfire react? Would it see it as 3 single HD 3870 ? Also what would it default to speed wise the single HD 3870???? I am curious how that configuration would work.

Yes. No problem. But if you don't want to run SLI you may consider an Intel chipset, not that 680i nFarce crap.

no not interested in sli or x-fire at the moment just interested in the fastest single slot gfx card available

i may change to a asus maximus if 3870x2 perform well in x-fire :)

If you're presently on a GTX you likely won't get much gain out of a 3870... ;)

so i should keep my gtx?

I've seen some good results from the 3870x2 especially in crysis as my gtx can't handle crysis w/aa @ a decent res :(

I'd keep the GTX for now and wait for the true next gen parts to show up.

Nothing on the market presently can handle crysis with AA at a decent resolution... Absolutely nothing. :(

Crossfire X or Quad Sli might maybe not at those very high res but maybe at 1600 1200.

I think the X38 problems are isolated incidents.
Although I'm sure it's easy to name a few problematic X38 boards that would be the reason X38 is on that list...

No problems here with 2 HD3870 X2's both work (not in crossfire of course, separately tried) on Asus Maximus Formula.

Which driver to get for best Crysis Performance at the moment?
I have tried the "8-2_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_58128.exe" and the "Sample_R680_xp_vista_8-45a.exe" drivers, but in Crysis i got very low min fps. Even less than i got with a 8800 GTS. Also i have those lags, but i think others have them too.
I don't expect that you suggest me a driver and everything will be perfect, i just want to know the best thing one can do with a HD3870X2 at the moment.

Dude u got it all wrong first of all i would suggest to anyone in usa or canada to purchase the 3870 x2 from extreme-pc.ca they work with diamond to make them the sell an overclocked version and a stock one but what makes them so special from other vendors is that they have unlocked BIOS up to 1000/3000! on both the stock an trhe overclocked one so no need for 3rd party applications overclocking straight from the BIOS

Best driver for me in Crysis is the new 8.2 Catalyst, I use the ones from Sapphires site because I bought a Sapphire card but I am pretty sure they are the same as the ones from ATI. I get 40-45FPS 1920x1200 object detail and texture detail on Very High and everything else a mix of mostly medium and some high on a q6600@3.8ghz Vista 64.

Only problem i have is with overclocking, nothing seems to work under Vista 64 I get worse performance when I overclock the card even using that bios editor to overclock it...seems to run best when i do a clean install of 8.2 and don't enable Overdrive.

Trusted Reviews have reviews of the Saphire card and the ASUS 4x HDCP DVI version.
