 Recently had a phone call to ASUS - X38 & 333FSB CPU's have problems with 0803 BIOS - AI suite can not be installed or crashes after install and Prime95 does not run - even at stock settings it crashes when it jumps from loop 1 to loop 2...... - so someone tested to install AI suite with the new 0904 BIOS (but plz with a 333FSB CPU !!!) or ran prime95 with this constallation?
Reports welcome !
:welcome:
the bios 904 runs like the 803 with my quadcore q6600 an dominator 1800.
the temps are better. from max.74 to max.67 .
on the striker extreme i have the same temps. perfect.
but i can´t run my dominator 1800 with 1800. the maximum prime stabil is 430x9.
when i test 450x6 and slow timinigs it hangs on at prime and 3dmark but memtest say no errors after 5passes.
hmm...
904 are baad for me!
Before i could boot and load Vista at 8x500 DDR2000 atleast, and run some 1m s-pi, but now, it wont even go on 467.. this one is really bad, and on the asus site i only see 702 bios, wich means this is a beta bios aswell as 803..
so maybe the 904 never will see the daylight of officialness......
perhaps Asus puts up their bios on the ftp, and uses us like guinnie pigs :)
i allready lost alot of fsb against my Commando with the 803, and now its even worse, and i cant see any other or feel any other improvement...
I need more FSB! asus get that ASAP :D
regards!
 Hm - reasons to keep 0803...........
Ezflash has gone to the fishes too..
without doin anything, it just freezes when its detecting hardware.
the usb stick shows up in dos, windows , formatted allready etc etc..
but NOT in the *pip*damn ezflash, had to use afudos with a Bootcd.
will try some more tough, i were never stable 4ghz with this board, now it is?
sacrifice some fsb for the stable 4ghz?
hmm hm :)
I found out that the "FSB-Strap to NB" is very important for succsess in this Bios-version.
When I kept it on "auto" it was nearly impossible to get the sys prime-stable ... no matter which voltages are increased or decreased.
I thought I have to go mad !
As last act of boredom I changed this strap-value to 333 and now it´s stable...
so there is also a matter of more or less stable (ram)dividers.
Infa, EZ Flash was freezing on me last night too while trying to flash the new bios. But after I changed USB slots it worked fine again.
this Ezflash are a strange thing, i have flashed several times on this board..
even tried after latest 803, it worked but said older blablal...
and now, without touching the function, i was going to put in the 904, and it doesnt work? hahha ..:banana::banana::banana:stuff, DOS ARE the best imo ...
well well, now im in win, typing at 4.2 , 9x467 that i thought never went before, TRIED ALL, but had tRAS at 18, and i changed it for fun to 20, and now suddenly its stable hahha .. these x38 boards are straaaange..
EDIT: think i will withdraw that this bios is bad :) just that i changed tRAS in bios from 18-20 made everything atleast as i was before..
better i think? will try prime again at 4ghz, it allways failed before at prime on X38 overall.. if it is, then its the thumn up on this.
nice one infa what volts are you giving it for 4.2
for benching only, 4.2 cant take no prime :)
about 1.68-70~ , Hitting 70c in load at that vcore (lowered Mhz but kept vcore)
now im 1.60~ 4.1, and goin priming, and see what happends :)
the 500FSB are still a no go though, seems like this bios made higher Mhz stable, but took some FSB, well its a way in the right direction anyway :)
not really had much time to play but seems stable enough , with me i could do 500+fsb easy but with ram at 2000mhz was not 3d stable tried loads of different looser timings higher volts etc but would generally hard lock in 3d benchmarks but lowered ram speed and was a ok , not tried with new 904 bios yet but i'll post if any improvement
nooo 4.1 is a no go :) tried max 1.63, and id died, could work with higher, but to high 24/7 , seems like 4GHz atleast are working again as before, "Seems" in not sure yet though..well see.. priming now, 1.53v.
gotta sleep now! its late and im been fighting with Ezflash some hours today too, got me really pissed ehhe..took my powers :P
Nighty!
my cpu seems not to play well with this board... yours could do high fsb before you switched to this board?
Cause of all the benching and priming for having a stable-sys I didn´t notice another prob that just occured now.
Sys is stable under prime / good results in super-Pi ... all fine ... but I just started to play a round "world in conflict" (tried other games also ) ... after a few minutes I got a bsd :
"nvlddmkm.sys" which is concerning the drivers for my 8800gtx.
The weird thing is when i clock my Q6600 down to 3GHz all is fine.
So what´s the matter ?
Should depend on the NB voltage, shouldn´t it ?
but I allready tried to raise to 1,69V ... still the same bsd.
Any ideas are welcome.
Got the PCIe frequency set manually at 100?
Yes it´s fixed ... never touched those frequency though ;)
I just found out that 4GB-Kits ( 2 x 2GB RAM) are very nb-voltage-needie... but I reached 1,7V now... and the nb should stay lower than 47°C...
and when I think a bit further than prime should also stall and this is the really weird thing about it `cause prime is stable for hours.
My settings are now :
Ai Overclock Tuner [Manual]
OC From CPU Level Up [Auto]
OC From Memory Level Up [Manual]
CPU Ratio Setting [9]
FSB Frequency [400MHz]
FSB Strap To North Bridge [333]
PCIE Frequency [100]
DRAM Frequency [DDR3-1600Mhz]
DRAM Timing Control [Manual]
Primary Info; 7-6-6-24-6-48
Rest is [Auto]
DRAM Static read control [Enabled]
DRAM Dynamic Write Control [Disabled]
Ai Clock Twister [strong]
CPU Voltage [1,36]
CPU PLL [1,63]
North Bridge Voltage :[1.71]
DRAM Voltage [1.8]
FSB Termination Voltage [1.4v]
Loadline Calibration [Enabled]
CPU GTL Reference [0.63x]
North Bridge GTL Rference [0.67x]
so where is the need to change or where is the prob???
I am totally stumped :shakes:
That NB voltage seems really high for 400 fsb. I can get by with default 1.41 at that speed. CPU PLL shouldn't need to be that high either. Try backing those down while holding prime stability. As for the nvidia driver crash, I don't know that I would be looking at chipset voltages as the culprit. Maybe check the nvidia forum and see what they have to say about that error, IIRC that one is fairly common.
The thing is :
if I clock down to 3GHz ( 333 MHz ) there is no bsd !
So somehow and somewhere the graphic-card-signal is going to be "corrupted" and my thinking was : the interface to graphic-card is the nb.
In fact I "assume" that with increasing nb-voltage the time to crash in-game is getting longer ... or it´s just randomly. ;)
this mobo is hottest then nForce .... but oc is great, but i cannot to reach 1800MHz for DDR3 ...
Anyboby else report freeeze problems with 0803 and later about some applications like prime, Asus AI Probe, Asus Ai Suite?
I have an E6420 and DDR3 STT 1600 7-7-7.
Please, somebody could post his bios configuration to show the right settings?
Is it possible to downgrade bios to a previous version? There is a metod different from recovery bios with EZ crash recovery utility described before in this thread?
Many thanks to everybody would give a support.
I have already red your post and with 0904 bios there are the some troubles. ;)
I would to hear something about these troubles by the people said that everything is running well with bios 0803, maybe they use some bios settings that I do not know, and they can support me to set well the bios. :)
I solved my prob now :
And the guilt goes to .... my OCZs !
With the new Bios it´s not possible to get them into their settings :(
When i turn them down to 1333MHz all works fine and I need a lot less voltage ( everywhere ! ).
Ok I just purchased this board and am getting it ready for SS and later cascade. What is the max FSB for quads on this board is it the same as the Maximus Formula SE?
http://www.blazingpc.com/forum/showt...x.html?t=10030
my cpu temp went down 20 c with 0904 bios . And memory overclocking improved much =) .
0904 bios not bad
My temps have not improved but so far so good

I would really love to know your bios voltages and settings recommended for this setup. I am new to OCing but have a decent WC setup and would like to try it out. Id like to get 10x400 stable. I cannot figure out what im doing wrong, and no one posts thier voltage settings. I have the ME w/ QX9650, Corsair 1600 2gb x2 (the ones with the big heatsinks), a thermochill PA120.2, Swifteck GTX with copper top, Swiftec MCP655 pump, and the D-tek fuzion GPU cooler. I cannot get bios to post @ 400... but i can get a perfect 12 hour Prime95 run @ 11x375 4.1ghz, 1500 Ram. But if i increase FSB it wont boot...
For 10 x 400, try this:
CPU PLL: 1.5
NB: 1.49
FSB Term: 1.4
works for me
Hello again people, had missed this thread posting on another forum on my overclocking progress of the Maximus Extreme and QX9650.
Here is the thread with more pictures of my current rig setup: http://forum.vadim.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1556
Here are some results I'm currently achieveing on water:
24/7 cool-running speed:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d..._86/Temp-1.jpg
CPU load around 55 degrees, Northbridge load 35 degrees.
Highest 2xOrthos 6 hour stable speed:
Around 4.45Ghz, Couldn't find a SS of it...:p:
Highest benchmarkable speed:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...asy_86/4-4.jpg
Highest windows bootable speed:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...asy_86/4-5.jpg
and SuperPi 1M at this speed:
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d..._86/Picrop.jpg
Lapped QX9650, seated with AS5, BIOS version 0904 (awsome version!! :D), Vista 64-bit.
:D MAXIMUS EXTREME loves Penryn:

has anyone hint for me how I could watercool the ME incl. the use of cf?
got the mips cooler next to me, but it seems that I wont be able to cool the idt...
http://www.gwebspace.de/sargatanas/PC/mainboard2.jpg
seems impossible to use the swiftech heatsinks like eternal_fantasy did it, the second card is just to close to it.
Just as i tought... looks like a bunch of people having trouble with Conroes on this board (me included) .. i also have this freeze problems/BSOD, ofcourse it is on high OC, but i really think this board really could handle ATLEAST what a 965 board could, but nooo... seems like it need ALOT more vcore for same speed.. like 0.1v more. And if i change a mem setting, the MB shuts down and on for the setting to take effect, then the system are stable in prime a while, but then it crashes, and are impossible to go prime again... but change some setting and boot again, then it works..
I also noted that at 1.70 4ghz it didnt crash, but at 1.5~ where it was stable in Commando, it wont go......hmmmm whyyy this problem?
The mem OC went worse with 904 too.
perhaps as i said, that X38 are more optimized for penryn family processors.
Looks like it atleast, Camoflauge and others Yorkies just love X38..
ahh well, cant test that before January 20th atleast, but i look forward to it :)
 Won't say so - my Conroe did a perfect job on this board:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=168298
:D Thx for posting this - makes me feel I should give 0904 a try now....;)
I have been fine tuning my 24/7 settings and landed on 10x420. Anything higher than 4.2 ghz requires big voltage jumps. Also at 1680 mhz on the ram I can run 7-6-5-16 timings, whereas at 1800 mhz I have to loosen to 8-8-8-20 in order to pass OCCT. (Not sure what the deal is with that.) Anyway, overall I'm pleased with the memory performance especially the low latency:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...965010x420.jpg
I had ALOT OF issues with the board, NOTHING worked, But after selecting strapp manualy everyhing is fine, 400x9 1:2 at strapp 200. Not an amazing acheavement but cool enough :D
[QUOTE=camouflage;2644111] Won't say so - my Conroe did a perfect job on this board:

Well mine doesnt work at all as good as it did on my Commando, sure it clocks about the same, but cant keep it stable, dunno why , and with 1.76 i could reach my maximum at 4400 in the summer, now it even freezes at 4300..
and 500FSB are a no go, wont even boot, before 16h stable...
soo somethings up with this....... well well its just face the facts i guess..
maybe ill try an older bios, like 702... AFUDOS wont complain on any old bios i hope like Ezflash.
regards.
FWIW the Maximus Extreme is the only board on which I've been able to boot a q6600 at 500 fsb:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...500Maximus.jpg
so anyone else using 904 can provide feedback?
Hmm, what is causing nvidia drivers to stop responding during OC?
i thought that pci-e were locked, or am i missing something?
PCI-E goes trough SB 1.5 , or the other SB? :) dumb question maybe but anyway..
im in 8x500 ddr2000 now, that it didnt even boot at before, SO strange hahah
but am getting nvddlkm something that is stopping to responding, but recoveres.
How are the dividers working? i have many issues with them on 803, not all work.
@ infa :
that was exact my problem.
But I though PCIe goes through NB.
I had to clock down the memory. Now I a waiting for response from OCZ cause my mem should work @ 1600 ... but when I clock my RAMs to 1600 it´s only a matter of time till nvlddmkm.sys quits.... it recovers a few times but over the time I´ll get a bsd.
GF let me have my christmas pressie early. Started a bit of prep work this evening. I tell you thats some rotten sh1t they put under the heatpipe as TIM. I'm at least an hour scraping the stuff off, chippin the tinyest bit each go. And impossible to get a completey smooth surface. Anyway, best I could do, the real fun starts tomorrow. Though I'm beginning to wonder from all the posts in this thread if it's the right choice of board?
This might be slight offtopic, but...
How come this board (if that's the reason) has so many probes in ASUS Probe?
On my P5E i only have the Vcore,12,3,5 + CPU & MB temp... ?
Anything special you need to do, or is it just the boards that determine what you can see?
Hmmm, did not work here.
I changed PCIe to 110 and switched my memory to 1600 ...
afterwards I took me some time to get it at least for 15minutes stable.
Raised NB to 1,49V , CPU PLL to 1,6V FSB term 1,4V
then it passed my 15min prime-test.
So I tried next with a game :
took only 2 minutes to let nvlddmkm.sys crash again. :shakes:
Maybe you could post me your settings.
What did I wrong ?
Both my Maximus Formula and Extreme have extra probes on the NB/SB etc, with the Extreme having 3 extra thermal probes you can place yourselfs. My P5K Premium don't have these sensors. I think it's just a X38 chipset function?
I have also had the 2 x 2GB OCZ DDR3-1600 EB Kit that cost almost £600!! , which refuse to boot at the advertised speed.. :( so I RMAed it and got the 1800 CellShock. Absolutely loving it!!:D
Note that the Maximus has a 2 phase Northbridge power controller, whereas the Formula, and in fact all my other motherboards, has only single phase. It might have contributed!! :D
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/d...sy_86/edit.jpg
:D Yep - I flashed it in Windows with ASUS Update @ 4GHz.... - all went fine, running stable without issues, but dunno if they fixed the problems with some not running programs at the ASUS X38 & FSB333 CPU combo.....(AI SUITE, PRIME, etc.).
Here's my thread - the 4.2GHz shot is done with BIOS 0904:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=170318
:welcome:
God dammit :)
im sick of my system BSOD at stable speeds.....
now i will put som hoze and adapters in and cool that freak'n NB and see if it helps.
its about 50c if i raise it to 1.65, and now its 41c IDLE at 1.45v
maybe its to high? but its not very high that it would do worse in OC?
whats your temp Camo on NB, and what vMCH are you using?
@ eternal fantasy :
Thx, for your info. These rams were very expensive - I paid 640€ ! And now I am so sick of them, can´t make them run on their announced speed.
But I wanted 4GB and I thought, if I take a 4GB in 2 slots, I´ll pass some potential troubles that some boards have with memories on all slots.
But I think I´ll rma them also ... I am so fed up.
This is the second pair of OCZs ( not on this board )that have been expensive for performance I did not can achieve !
I think I am through on OCZ.
I have had a pair of OCZ DDR3-1800 sent to me for testing while waiting for the 4GB kit. That pair ran awsomely, as all the DDR3-1800+ at the moment uses the same Micron chips, and is absolutely amazing silicon. I also thought using just 2 sticks of ram for 4GB, although at slower speed will make my system easier to clock, but it turns out for some reason much worse, and not even stable at advertised settings. :(
@ eternal :
short question :
Now you´re using 4 x 1 GB Cellshocks with 1800 or only 2 GB ?
If so - did you expirienced any trouble with 4 rows ?
Thx Z3r0.
So I think I´ll change these OCZ to some 1800er Cellshocks.
I am in the middle of a build and really on the edge of buying the Max. Extreme to pair up with my QX9650. Does anyone know if the Max. Extreme has any issues with this memory:
Corsair TWIN3X4096-1600C7DHXIN (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145190)
Although I am looking for an answer to the memory question, but also, would you recommend the maximus extreme to others based on your own experiences with the board? (I will be using it with air cooling)
Thanks!
Hmmm is it just me or is this really no better than the Maximus Formula SE.
I can run DDR3 1900+ with my Crucials but to be honest my superPi score 10m is better with my old Maximus SE using DDR2 at 1100mhz...
Im using the 0904 bios...
Heres a link to my thread so far...
http://www.blazingpc.com/forum/showt...30/index3.html
Im hoping its something im missing...
Are there any way to get back to an old Bios, without Crashing it first?
why would they do such a thing.. to not be able to go back in bios, its just stupid, what if the new one wasnt good? Bioses are quite induvidial i think... dependent on hardware.
btw, watercooling my NB did lower my temps between 6-10c but it didnt do a shajjt on my Bsod, all are the same, 1-2hours to hell........bah.. damn cpu i think its slowly dieing on me.
Cant see your timings picture, and in not going to register there just to see it :) , to keep a lower s-pi you got to keep the timings atleast at 7 in 1900+ speed, i won a minute in s-pi with cpu at 4.2ghz and mem 1872mhz cl 7-6-5-16 i think, and with ddr2 i kept cpu at 4.3ghz(100mhz more) and ddr2 at 960Mhz Cas 4, and i won a minute EVEN with cpu at 100mhz lower.
getting about 11700 read. Dunno exactly what your problem are, some more hints?
7-6-6-14
I wasnt asking you to register and you didnt have to ... lol
lol its even worse with trans booster:
http://img31.picoodle.com/img/img31/...zm_203427b.jpg
heh i get those numbers on 4ghz atleast! :)
11600 on 3.9Ghz, mem 1755~
see that Trans booster are not on RELAX and on ENABLED , easy to miss..
if not STRANGE..... you should get higher than that, but its a diffrence in memsped and bandwith..
i get about 11700 read, 43 latency at 9x445, and at 8x500 ddr3 2000 i get about 13000k and 38 latency so its a big diffrence how you run ur ram..
and at 4900 you should go a divider higher and fix that multiplier to a lower.
Does anyone have ANY idea if this memory works with the Maximus Extreme? Its not listed on the ASUS Site, its not listed on the Corsair site (for the ME), so I would appreciate it if anyone can go out of their way to provide me some feedback. Thanks in advance.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145190
Thats the point its slower or perhaps the board is slower than the Maximus SE and my old Crucial DDR2 sticks.
Heres a shot where i tweaked a bit and transbooster doesnt give me anything thats i can set myself in memset :p:
http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/...zm_a207230.jpg
THere is a Thermochill PA 120.2 in there, with 2 Panaflo U1s on the back and 2 LED thermaltake 120s on the front for looks. I am using the stock Maximus Extreme chipset cooler, i know its restrictive but im runing a QX9650 @ 4.2 Ghz and havnt seen 50c doing a 24 hour prime95 FFT run with panaflos @ 70%! EVGA 8800 GTX SSC, 2 WD Raptor 150 in Raid 1, 2 Hitach 1TB in Raid 1, An asus 20x SATA burner, and a BLU-RAY Drive! Shhhhaaaaawing! :)

mnemonick - Thanks for that info! BTW - Nice rig.
Thanks!
thanks for the tips.. i am getting ready to paint the inside for more of a blackout effect.
So what did you cool with that 120.2, aI am thinking of putting a 120.3 in there and only having the on/off and a cd/dvd but i am not sure of my coooling needs, i think i will have to run 2 seperate loops, since i am cooling a maximux extreme, fusion block, cpu and various gpu's.
:D I think I can break 10min 32M soon with this board:
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9...1ghz32myi2.jpg
Just an observation but I am finding I can post higher with the 333 strap and my QX9650 than with the 400 strap.
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/...em_d7b7379.jpg
i have too joined the ranks of ME owners and i must say, it wasn't pretty earlier this afternoon. i grabbed the board last night and didn't get a chance to power it up until this morning and for the better part of the day, i was pulling what hair i have left out. coming over from a P5K3-Dlx, which was at the time coming from a P5B-Dlx/P5N32-E SLI, i was not to pleased with how much hassle and how picky this board has been voltage wise.
the P5K3-Dlx was priming at 550FSB within minutes after powering up for the first time. this ME monster was a whole different story. in the end, i have made a ton of progress and managed to get something reasonable out of it so far. this screenshot certainly was not going to happen on the P5K3-Dlx. single 32M, yes, but dual 32M would crap out around 960MHz give or take. Saaya was right...X38 seems to handle high clocks a little better:
click for full size including Memset and voltages...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...dual32m-1s.png
still haven't messed with timings or anything like that. just happy to finally get a dual 32M ran at 1000MHz and on the 266 strap even. still not having as much luck with PL level at 450+ FSB having to use 7 but hopefully once i get a better feel with the board i can get PL6 at 450FSB+.
i am still not ready to give this board the praise that Camoflage is giving it but after a day, it seems to have some decent potential. i just wish i had a P5E3-Dlx to compare it with as comparing the X38 to P35 of the P5K3-Dlx isn't a fair fight ;)
and to finish off my first night with this fattie, a shot of the setup:

Shouldnt my score be lower at 5ghz and 1820 7-7-7-14 1t or am I mistaken?
[img=http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/5/12/24/t_32mm_47ab60c.jpg]
i would think so with a 45nm. keep in mind though that 32M is all about the OS tweaks and 30-45+ seconds can be had from completely un-tweaked to a fully tweaked setup.
with my exceptionally tweaked, balls out sub 5GHz run on 65nm only a second behind you at a higher frequency, i would say you either have something strange going on or some windows tweaking to do. of course mine is at a higher FSB which really helps too but i would still think a decent 45nm setup should crush a highly optomized 65nm run at similar CPU/RAM frequencies.
are you using any form of copy wazza for your run?
is LargeSystemCache enabled?
those two alone are worth a solid 20+ seconds on some setups.
Nope whats copy wazza and how do i enable large cache?
LargeSystemCache:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"LargeSystemCache"=dword:00000001
and just do a search for copy wazza, there are numerous different methods but no distinctive tutorial. i did up a screencast that incorporates copy wazza and ERAM a while back but it isn't the best method anymore in my opinion. it is worth about 8-9 seconds though in 32M:
http://3oh6.com/forum_posted/ocx/jas...pywazza-1.html
HTH and lowers your times a bit for ya
Thanks ill try after christmas :)
Hi.. i wonder if i can ask for your advice.. im a relative noob at oc'ing ram (cpu no problem). i've a similar rig to you but have had problems getting my ram running at anywhere near full speed... please can you post up your memset sceenshots (or bios settings?) so i can compare mine and try and identify the problem?

First off amazing OC  and secondly I am  that I require a ton more volts to get that high.
Also what temp was that run on Im hoping thats a lot colder than a normal SS :p:. My cascade should be ready shortly and ill see what it can do at less than -100c... http://www.blazingpc.com/forum/showt...ex.html?t=6625
But more importantly for the purposes of the SuperPi discussion I am surprised that your score is not lower.
I ordered one of these today :D

That's the combo I got, So you guys would suggest replacing the thermal paste before even using it huh?
how hard is it do take the heat sink off to do that? I'm not new to doing this, but on a board with this kind of heat sink, and most I ever paid for a MB makes me a little nervous :p:
not hard to clean up paste but yes its needed look at these picts...

i had pretty decent contact on the northbridge with the stock paste but the southbridge and crosslink were pretty poor, but weren't really hot so it doesn't really effect much. i really should have taken pics while doing it. i take photos of everything else, not sure why i didn't doing this.
either way, after applying AS5 on the northbridge, temps seem to be a little better but nothing spectacular. one big tip though...acetone eats that stock thermal pad like nothing. definitely worth picking some up to save a big hassle.
post someone good voltage settings for fsb around 500MHz! I cannot to vreak 470MHz ... THANKS!
Yes some voltage settings or bios shot would do wounders :D
Also I cant get AI Suite v1.03.15 to work.
