Any reccomendations for a cheap but effective aftermarket cooler for the 8800 GT? I'm curious if I can get a better OC by getting some more cooling, and the tiny fan on this whines like mad if I push it above 50% duty cycle.

air or water?
note, lots of water options if so inclines, I am going Danger Den Maze 5, and soon they will add a full sized block, but those are never my preference...
I'm looking for air.. and yeah, does seem Accelero S1 is cheapest, though I'm getting worried about the ram and the PWM chips on the far right of the card.. Would it cool those sufficiently?
Also looking at Zalman VF1000 and Thermaltake DuOrb, but those seem to be $50 compared to $30 for the S1.
I am not doing the traditional heatsinks, on the memory in favor of blown air from a VERY high volume 80mmZalman RdM8015B
what can I expect for overclocking on the stock 8800gt @ 600/1800 not sure shader
and about vmods you can use nibitor VID? or have to use physical vmod?
There is a Bios mod that can increase the stock 8800GT Vcore from 1.05 to 1.1V: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...35#post2560835
Works great and can give you between 0 to 50 MHz on the core and the shaders. there is also a Hard Vmod that can increase up to 1.3V if you have good cooling, search in the the Vmod sub-forum.
I wonder what voltage we can feel comfortable at. I know with the g71, there were models that had 3d mode up to 1.4 or 1.45v, vs the stock 1.2v.
I just ordered the XFX 8800GT Extreme anyone has this card? I'm interested to know how the card clock and what is the default shader clocks.
Anybody done a stock vs aftermarket OC comparison? Not sure if it's worth it to spend another $40 (20% of the price of the card) to get 1-2% more performance.

Today I put a Thermaltake Duorb on my 8800GT. It works pretty good considering the price of 30€. Load temps dropped like 25 degrees...
Now i want a new motherboard....i need SLI :D

Guys I really need your help here. I experience some crashes in Gears of War in default speed and Crysis if i OC the core a bit. I get blue red and green pixels along with a freeze of the screen, then one new frame is drawn where my pc freezes completely, but the sound continues. It is ofc my brand new asus 8800gt.
I removed the stock heatsink and installed my waterblock, 8 small copper heatsinks on each ram chip and 4 small heatsinks on some mosfets. Theres a 12cm fan blowing towards everything.
The GPU temp in everest and atitool shows ~30 on idle and ~50 on load. Wtf is going on?
I lowered the core and shader clocks and it seemed to be more stable in Gears of war. I have tried reinstalling my waterblock 3 times. It seems to be fitting perfectly.
I noticed the stock heatsink is in contact with many mosfets. I noticed where the white compound was touching the card and added heatsinks there. I think i got the right mosfets. Are there any particular ones i should pay more attention? Could it be the mosfets?
Should I keep the core and shader clocks linked when OCing?
Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Edit: I noticed theres a difference in gpu temp from atitool to everest. Atitool shows 54 on load while everest shows 47
The thing is I never tried the stock core heatsink, I put some glue on the ram heatsinks and it will be a big deal to remove them to put it back
Did you put the glue carefully?
you might have a short circuit there in your mem chips,so you have artifacts.
Very carefully. The thing is Gears of war makes this happen in 3-5 mins. The other games dont.
I reinstalled the waterblock and now the core temp seems NOT to increase at all when I run atitool - Scan for artifacts!!! Only 1-2 degrees

well, it is a hot running card, 50 c is not tooo hot though under load, Without seeing , reading of the wc system I hesitate to advise..
My 8800 oem which says Nvidia gforce but made by galaxy oc's on stock runs hot.. but my water sys goes in the next few days.. will post temps.
My XFX starts artifacting in ATI Tool at 725 core (errors) or 1800 Shaders (yellow dots) :(
I can run 3DMark06 stable at 771/1836/1000 with stock@60% and temps around 75°C, but Crysis is stable with core only at 720.. With a biosmod 1.1V. Maybe some VF900 and a vgpu mod@1.2V will help.. But what about temps then?
you`ll 100% have higher temps,so you might start thinking of an aftermarket cooler if you are going to do the hardmod.
My vgpu measured is now 1.13V. With a vr vmod I would raise to like 1.2V, nothing higher. I was thinking of Accelero S1 with some 12cm fan?

@coolice,i believe you are with stock cooling right?
750 is a very descent clock..
Has anyone tried running lower shader with memory set higher on these things yet...I know the GPU is bare IHS which runs cooler ,but ive noticed the memory seems to not go too high?
Could be heat related or Volts maybe?
Note; Ive only seen yellow pixalating in ATI tool when i pushed a hot card and mem heated up....if you see differant colors or Sqaures not pixels the shader is too high!
the mem of this card is for laughing....Qimonda 1.0ns rated...
not even with Vmem they`ll go higher...
I need some advice...
I already have a BFG 8800gt (the 625mhz one), and I saw a good deal on an XFX (the 600mhz one) so I had to buy it... I'm not sure exactly why yet, but I am trying to figure it out.
My BFG overclocks to 700/1000 ATItool stable (30mins, stock voltages, stock heatsink), but I don't really know if that is good or not. This is with the stock cooler set to 85% fan speed, and it reaches 80*C during 30mins of this. Is this average? Above average? Below average?
If it is below average, I'll sell the BFG (for as much as I paid for it) and keep the XFX and save money. If it is above average, I'll sell the XFX for more than I paid for it (in fact, the difference between what I paid for the BFG and the XFX, so that it's not like keeping the XFX would save me even petty cash).
What I'm worried about is that this is a perfectly normal or sub-par overclock, and that I could be putting an awesome-clocking XFX on Ebay.
Please help! This type of stuff kills me.
Yes, it improved the max corespeed by ~20 MHz and the shaderspeed about ~40MHz. It's also much more quiet than the stock cooler. Also the stock cooler was mounted very bad, there was like a 2mm thick layer of thermal paste on the gpu, and the ramchips were covered with crappy tape. The DuOrb comes with ramsinks and vrm sinks. That's way better than some crappy tapejob.... :D
700/1000 is in the good average. My XFX 8800 GT would do 680/1000 with the stock bios. After editing my bios to have 1.1Vcore instead of stock 1.05V I can now reach the OC in my sig. I think I can improve the OC a bit more but I'm waiting to buy a better cooler for that.
Installed Accelero S1 with an Arctic Cooling 120mm Fan strapped onto it, on my eVGA 8800 GT.
Core Temps went from 90 C load to 50 C load. Idle went from ~70 C to 40 C, which is just above the ambient case temperature in my P182.
ATI Tool artifact free clocks went up from:
738/1728
to
777/1836
Memory I left at 950. I think I'm being capped by my Opteron 165 and Vista in Crysis Demo anyways, since I only got more 0.2 FPS in the GPU Benchmark.
But yeah, the Accelero S1 is definitely worth it.
Btw I RMAed the ASUS 8800gt and got an ECS which works fine atm
before 720 - 1800 - 2000
after 750 - 1850 - 2000
my memory is not so good
i was doing 675 core/1674 shader (actual)/1000 mem and it was freezing in any game
then did 700/1674 shader (actual)/975 mem and still freezing and I was like man this card sucks
realized it was the memory
i can only do 950 stable for mem but once i figured that out i got core and shader flying with 1.1v bios vmod
725 core /1812 shader (1836 actual)/950 mem
just set it to that so maybe more
stock cooling around 65c load since it's cold in here with 75% fan

the G92 has a lot of potential..
i`m playing at 771/1890/950 for 24/7 usage and max run of 3dmark06 was 802/2052/1026 unmodded with water..
I got my ASUS 8800GT running 700/1700/1800!
I can't get the memory higher much, said that, at 950MHz, its failing... gaymonda sux indeed!
I manage to get my BFG 8800GT to run a 780 core, and 1900 shader and 1000mhz (actual ) on the memory. Not bad for stock BIOS.
I have a BFG OC 8800gt w/ no mods and stock cooler,
here are my max ATItool clocks:
770/1105/1966
at 776 It froze, 1972 was full of artifacts, and 1109 on memory gave me BSOD. My 24/7 settings are 751/1066/1952
I just got an Albatron 8800GT. Max ATItool stable clocks are 720/1782/1044mhz.
That's on stock volts with a Zalman VF1000 installed.
just got my 8800GT RMA as my previous one was DOA from EVGA
i was expecting recertified but to my suprise a brand spaking new one sealed in the box - and it looks like the new cooler, bigger fan and geforce logo on the side and not as loud, it is new cooler
and it is/supposedely the vanilla clocked one @ 600/900/1500 as the box just said 8800gt
to my suprise stock clocks read 650/950/1625
here's what i got first try, 15 min ati tool artifact free...........with this new cooler 70% is perfectly fine and only getting around 65c load temp
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/8fusu
stock volts/BIOS and the cd included very recent drivers the ones right before beta 19.09 and 169.02 WHQL saved my dial-up a download
i like EVGA support
I tested a little my asus gt.
730/1730/1800 so far, stable! :)
just testing my new 8800GT SC :D
740 / 1800 / 2040 stable with crysis and Fur Benchmark
how do you overclock the shaders speed??
Also, when i try to install ATI Tool, it tells me it cant install the drivers for it, cause they are unsigned. It lets me continue, but the program cant read my hardware.
I just setup 2 8800GT cards in SLI and have been doing some preliminary testing. I get about 17100 in '06 with the specs in my sig and the cards running at 690/1699/1000 with fans at 80%.
My big concern is the huge difference in temperatures between the 2 cards. After 1 hour of playing Crysis with SLI enabled (and confirmed working), the GPU1 is at 90C while GPU2 is at 60C. That is a gigantic difference in load temps. I have both fans at 80% (at least I think from the setting used in Rivatuner) and both have good air flow around them. If anything, the hotter of the 2 cards has a PCI fan slot blower sitting directly beneath it.
Under idle conditions, GPU1 is at 63C and GPU2 is at 50C. What could possibly be the cause for this? I may try removing the heatsink and applying AS5.
Anyone else seeing such huge difference in temps between the cards?
Yeah... I use fur to test if it locks up you went too far, lol... I hope to bench mine this weekend though... homework sucks...
If Fur is stable with high clocks i run crysis. :)
Niceee! :)
I have done the BIOS volt mod, to 1.1V, now I can run my GT @ 750/1850(gpu/shader)MHz...! Cool!
I got my BFG 8800GT OC today + TT DuOrb, the temps are amazing (screenshot), so is the OC on the core, but i don't know if i should keep pushing the Shaders // memory, i've heard the 8800GT memories are not exactly OC friendly.
750 - 1675 - 1800
Worth the risk to increase even more shaders + memory speed ?
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/495...cbfg750fd4.jpg
Few more OC tests...
Really surprised with the performance, playing CoD4 with the GTX & this 8800GT OC'ed, the GT totally outperforms it @ 1680 X 1050.
Btw, i am using default BIOS, wondering, when i will reach the Core limit :D

I have a evga gt superclocked that can do 767/1955/1021 stable watercooled (mcw60) and ramsinks on all the memory/vregs.
It looks like the gts can produce about 850/2150/1150 watercooled or aircooled, but is it worth $100-120 more..
Finally i decided to OC the memories a little, from 900 to 950Mhz, super stable, right now the speeds are 740 - 1850 - 1900, i tried to push up a bit more the core // shaders with no success, excellent OC to be honest.
I guess its time to start gathering information about the bios vmod, i am not quite sure if the BFG 8800GT comes already with the core at 1.1v.
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6...2006qp2.th.jpg
Why was your stock shader so low?? Mine came at 1625. And if I tried OC them WITH the Core it would artifact and become unstable. If you lower your shaders, you will be able to push your core/mem further. you should worry about core/mem speed before shaders speed.

Setup in teh sig. Low clocks only for now, 4.35ghz Q6600 later. This card ran 2202Mhz on the mem when I first got it, then 2106 and now I can only run 2052Mhz stable
:caution: Warnig:caution: im starting to see lots of memory failure on GT's and some GTS512mb's ...They memory slowly cooks itsself once it is overclocked past 2050mhz ,that is if your memory even goes that high!:explode2: ...Even with better cooling...The new GTS512mb has the problem too..I was gonna buy a new GTS512mb but started seeing memory issues popping up due to crappy memory ..The memory has been failing bad @stock on the GT,Especialy after heavy gaming even with fan up 100% people have posted RMA's due to memory in Nvidia/BfgTech Forums...That was the main reason Nvidia released a new cooler for GT to help with the memory overheat issue...
Im a die hard Nvidia fan ,but im gonna have to wait for better memory before i grab a GT/GTS512mb...
I just Orderd a 640SSC which Which COST MORE THAN GTS512mb..just to hold me over untill the issue is under control. Im only Stepping up when a better revision is out ,with better or less memory issues !:shakes: Even in our forums ive been seen GT/Gts problems starting to pop up in regards of game corruption/pixeling/cards slowly shutting down....This isnt due to the Drivers which had plagued 8800series in the past . I can safely say it is poor choice of memory/cooling used for the cards...If you have this problem ,,I highly suggest you use RivaTuner and declock the memory or not go above 2000mhz for stability...The memory will fail qiuk one it starts to go as my friends card did in less than two days of hard gamming at 2100mhz...Youll see what im talking about if it starts putting up wierd sqaures and or dots tearing or the display looks like a jigsaw puzzle..Qimondo memory sucks..The SAMSUNG does 2300mhz easy....Even my 320 did 2300mhz with out a problem!
If your gonna overclock it ,,i wouldnt exceed 2000mhz on the memory....Just crank the GPU and Shader....Maybe step up the card in a few months for a better revision or model..that is if you have that option!
P.S Sorry i had too write this,,I was looking forward to a new 512mb to Overclock..now im waiting to see if more memory issues keep popping up..:shakes:This really sucks,,,Nv memory/cooler 7900series youd think they would of learned that one:shakes: ...

I recived my vanilla EVGA 8800 GT yesterday. And now I've overclocked it a bit, but the wierdest thing is that I get lower scores in 3dmark when I overclock it.
I haven't got the slightest idea what might be causing this, so I need your help.
I know my processor is bottlenecking the grapichscard, but it shouldn't stop me from getting higher SM 2.0 and SM 3.0 scores in 06.
Current system (sig is a bit outdated):
Opteron 165 @ 2,83 GHz
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe with 1805 BIOS (latest)
2 GB G.skill ZX @ 257 MHz; 3 - 2 - 3 - 5
EVGA 8800 GT "Vanilla"
FSP Epsilon 700 W
I got 10681 points in 06 with 8800 GT @ stock and 2-400 lower score depending on overclock.
How the f*** are you guys hitting 900+ mhz core's!?!?!?!?! Holy crap!
edit: Omg, yoru shaders too!! I cant OC my shaders at all, or else it holds my core/mem speeds back.
Oh, and the Bandwith doesnt look right for that much of an overclock, I got mine at 700Mhz core, and 2015mhz memory, and Im at 65gb/s, same as yours yet you have a much higher OC.
GPU-Z doesn't have a benchmark to measure RAM bandwidth, it's just the theoretical maximum that it shows. It's easy to make this calculation:
Bandwidth in GByte = bus width (in bit) X frequency (DDR in mhz) / 8000
256bit X DDR2015 / 8000 = 64.48GByte/sec
256bit X DDR2052 / 8000 = 65.66GByte/sec
;)
i managed a run of 06 at 810/2052/1026 yesterday...
only with bios 1.2V mod...
I have better OC results when having the gpu not linked with the shader. My shader seems to be limited at 1850 (1836 real- about 740 core linked) but the core goes up a lot more. Im up to 770 and it seems like i still have room for more.
how good are these scores ?
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...ewin/3dm06.jpg
funny how my 3.6Ghz Core 2 Duo ruins my 3dMark06 score so badly. I beat leoftw's SM2 and SM3 scores quite badly although i score over 1200 points lower just cuz its a dual core instead of quad.
I have a problem. I ran 3DM 06 at leoftw's GFX clocks and got the same scores, but our scores are made in different ways. Im way low on SM2 performance and a bit down on SM3. However I have an extra 1k points on the CPU test (I'm running dual quad core xeons clocked at 3.4GHz) that bring my score up to 14.3k. This seems odd when I'm running an identical card at identical clocks.
So really what I'm asking is are there any settings that can raise my SM2/3 scores. See link below for screenshot.
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...ple/lowsm2.jpg
thats why 3dMark06 blows. Its very CPU dependent with its scoring. It sounds like drivers maybe? Do you have the Vista hotfixes installed?
IŽll get my EVGA 8800GT SSC tomorrow, but i need to wait for my new res to rebuild my Waterloop (dont cool the GPU for now). CanŽt wait to see how it performs, expecting results for the weekend :).
im at 730 mhz core now, and 2015 mem (not halved) and 1625 shaders (stock shaders). No pics right now.

8800 GT 720/2044 Q6600@3.8ghz
Hey guys quick question as this topic is spread out over a coupla threads:
Which 8800gt cards are the better overclockers and which are the worst?
Or do they all overclock the same?
Will a cheap PNY 600mhz card hit EVGA SSC 700mhz levels by a bios flash or do I need to go EVGA/XFX/BFG for a better chance of success?
Thanks.
All companies are about the same... It just a hit and miss with these card so just prey to have a good one :)
Mine is doing just great... My shaders are backing me up a bit...
1775MHz seems to be the max for 24/7 usage... but I can bench at 1860MHz...
Is there any way to raise the voltage a bit on these cards?
so far with the stock bios im hitting 750/1810/2000 with my XFX Aplha Dog...
I wish people wouldn't post halved scores, god thats so annoying, just post the actual freaking Mhz. So damn confusing.
Doesn't look like vista
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/a...ple/lowsm2.jpg
Whooops I see it is vista "DOH"
Yup its vista. Though I'd disable Aero to see if that helped things.
Finally got a BFG 8800gt OC 512mb stock 625/1900 off ebay. Picked up a Zalman VF900 Fatal1ty too. Total for everything was $275.
Used NiBiToR v3.6 to modify the original bios to come as close to the MSI 8800GTS 512mb at 730/1800/2000. Tried 1825 for shaders but somehow would let me flash past 1800.
B4 with the stock cooler I could only hit SSC levels stable at temps 52>81 C.
After installing the quiet VF900 Fatal1ty I hit MSI 8800gts OC levels, 40>55 C.
http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/g...9/SuperBFG.jpg
Not too extreme but I'm happy
703/1728/1000 is max with stock cooler for me :shakes:.
I know it's not that bad, but it would be nice to have a good clocking card for once. So now I'm thinking about returning this card to the shop and get another 8800 GT. Hopefully with samsung memory :).
Ordered me a Galaxy 8800GT today for $209 after rebate :) Does anyone know if the mounting holes on these are the same the rest of the 8800s?
Good price:up:
They do not match the previous generation 320/640/768mb 8800 series cards.
But all the new G92 8800 series cards have the same mounting holes including the new 8800GTS 512mb. Check out the review of the XFX 8800GTS 512mb on www.hardwarecanucks.com for more info on mounting an HR-03, or Hardocp has a review of several current aftermarket coolers that fit the new 8800GT/GTS:cool:
